Mt. SAC knocks off No. 2 ranked team in the country, 47-42, to advance to state finals

| | Comments (20) |

I know it's not prep sports, but MT. SAC beat the No. 2-ranked team in the nation on Saturday, beating Bakersfield, 47-42 in the Southern California junior college championship game in front of more than 12,000 fans in Baskersfield.
The win propels Mt. SAC (10-2) into next Saturday's 1 p.m. state championship game in Fresno against City College of San Francisco, which won the Northern California title earlier Saturday with a 24-10 win over Sierra. The Mounties will be looking for their first state title since 1997, a game they won in dramatic fashion over San Francisco under then-quarterback Mike Moschetti, who went on to play at Colorado. Is this something you want to blog about. Steve and I have recently been put in charge of our area colleges. I think at least in football, maybe we should blog our area colleges next season and follow the Mounties through to the title game on Saturday. Your thoughts?

Hey sgvfan2,
You left out Grant Wheatly - Covina '05 grad. He is at ULV. He is their closer and from what I understand he may be throwing in the low 90's now.

You want to hear about a unsung high school player from the valley. Look at Jeremy Gener, A graduate from Bishop Amat. He walked on after the first 2 games last year to become the starting kicker for MT.SAC.In the Bakerfields game he made 4 field goals and 5 extra points. It is nice to see local talent do so well.

Oh and don't forget at ULV you also have Amat Grads:

Jon Michael Hattabaugh 05' - Inf
David Contreras Jr. 06' - P/Inf
Sal Diaz 05' - P
Sergio Munoz 07' - Inf

Also Covina Grads:

Rich Johnson 05' - P
Jason Munoz 06' - Inf

Amongst Others..... Some Great Local talent staying home to compete and get their Education done..!!!

Good Luck to all!!

The Mountie QB, Kevin Craft, has a great arm and an advantage over most JC players as he's actually played at the D-1 level - following his dad, Tom Craft to Mt Sac after Tom took the OC job. Expect Kevin to be making noise at the D-1 level again - rumors say Hawaii, but that's pure speculation. Good kid, great arm.

Interesting side of the CCSF game, I think Tom Craft lost to CCSF the last time he faced them in the championship as the head coach of San Diego JC Palomar College - but he didn't have Kevin as his QB.

I think that would be great a change of pace even on some of the local d3 teams keep up the great work.

Joe Amat for Amat's Varsity Football HC. He's smart, talented and apparently well informed and well connected.

LBL,
The selection of Illinois to the Rose Bowl had nothing do with the BCS. That was completely the ToR choice. After Big-10 champion Ohio State was placed in the BCS title game as the No. 1 team, the Rose Bowl had first pick to replace them with an at-large team. Rather than pick No. 4 Georgia, they decided for the traditional Big-10-Pac-10 matchup and picked No. 13 Illinois. I thought they might go for No. 4 Georgia, because on paper, that looks like a better matchup up - No. 4 vs. No. 6 - but the RB is always set on the Pac 10 vs. Big 10, if they can get it.

PAC 10 GOT SNUBBED AGAIN.
THE DAMN BCS IS SO BIAS THEY ARE EVEN AFRAID TO SCHEDULE A QUALITY OPPONENT. ILLINOIS 9-3 CMON
WOULD OF LOVE TO SEE USC SPANK GEORGIA IN THE ROSE BOWL.

Its hard enough to find the scores to the JC games. It would be great to see stats broken down and even some write ups on the local players continuing the dream.

THEHenry said:

i think that is a good idea...
i think local JC's are a draw as much, if not more than preps in local publications such as this

Dan said:

Great idea Fred, it could creat some more interest on the JC level and maybe get some fan
support for our local JC schools

Many of the "unsung" HS players play at the local DIII's like Whittier, Pomona-Pitzer, La Verne and Oxy while APU gets some too, like Justin Sapp and Davon Roberts on this years team and Spencer Foster or Kahlif Ford, from Diamond Bar.

Even some of the "sung" players like former CIF Player of the Year from Los Altos (and present assistant) Felipe Aguilar, who played at at Pomona-Pitzer, end up in local DIII's.

Matt Castaneda from Los Altos went to Whittier as did basketball players Verne Covington from Covina and Gabe nazaroff from Los Altos.

Troy Doolittle from Western Christian quarterbacks La Verne, who also sports Marissa Raya from Bassett on the Women's team who seem to get a bunch of locals. Sydney Myrick, another former SGV POY , was a standout at La Verne and did a stint as an assistant there. La Verne also has a big amat connection with the men's team as alumnus Richard Reed is the head coach and Juan Canas, a starter on amat's '02 CIF championship team seems to be finally getting time for them. That amat teams coach, Ray Lokar, has a son who he coached at Western Christian, palyed at ULV is also presently Reed's assistant. His daughter, who was All-SGV at Western Christian while he was still at amat, also plays at one of the schools in the same league.

It's great to follow the HS players that move on to these levels of sports - that are much more "pure" than the jaded DI athletes. These kids play for the right reason and it would be nice to read about them now and then

Absolutely would love to hear about our local boys playing at that level, Names, schools, stats. backround stories it will help shed some light on how the jc system works. I dont think too many of us know very much about it, I know I dont.

JC football why not? said:

By all means follow it up, especially if you have former local SGV prep stars playing at the JC level.

Fred,
How about following just the Junior College teams, because so many of the local "unsung" high school players try to continue the "dream" to D1 college through the JC system.
