Hoops tournaments heat up this week; Glendora/Rowland tourney winner to meet Arroyo tournament winner in championship on Saturday night

Note: Will coaches or tournament directors please call me daily at 626-962-8811, Ext. 2161 to update tournament bracket schedules.

It’s not the San Gabriel Valley boys basketball championship, but it’s the closest thing to it. The winner of the annual Glendora/Rowland tournament will meet the champion from the Arroyo tournament on Saturday at Glendora High School at 7:30 p.m. Essentially, it’s a 32-team field with nearly all the local heavyweights in it.

We love to do predictions, so here’s mine.

Damien-Rancho Cucamonga
Centennial-Glendora
Friday Final: Centennial over Damien
Arroyo Tournament semifinals
La Canada-Montclair

Mt. SAC knocks off No. 2 ranked team in the country, 47-42, to advance to state finals

I know it’s not prep sports, but MT. SAC beat the No. 2-ranked team in the nation on Saturday, beating Bakersfield, 47-42 in the Southern California junior college championship game in front of more than 12,000 fans in Baskersfield.
The win propels Mt. SAC (10-2) into next Saturday’s 1 p.m. state championship game in Fresno against City College of San Francisco, which won the Northern California title earlier Saturday with a 24-10 win over Sierra. The Mounties will be looking for their first state title since 1997, a game they won in dramatic fashion over San Francisco under then-quarterback Mike Moschetti, who went on to play at Colorado. Is this something you want to blog about. Steve and I have recently been put in charge of our area colleges. I think at least in football, maybe we should blog our area colleges next season and follow the Mounties through to the title game on Saturday. Your thoughts?
