SD Fans and Players and Coaches,
Respect the coaches for who they are and that they do respect you and want what is good for you, but this these guys are christains stuff is not for here and not for all the players...what about kids that are jewish or muslim or hindu on the team? It's flat out disrespectful to bring religion into the team at all. A higher being or belief in the future is as far as you go...respect everyone and even those who don't believe in life after death, please stop the christian stuff...we saw what happened with Jon Kitna this year...having a nice year with Detroit at 6-2 and than the big article comes out about him having meetings with teammates and basically the team becoming a sunday service...well, they finished 7-9. To each its own, this is not a religious institution such as APU, Notre Dame etc...God Bless!

The San Dimas Saints are lead by a group of Christian coaches that have put SD in the position it is today. Fred,I guess you are right. If Sumler was over there in the Star-news section, he would have gotten first team all-area. All the power house schools are in the Tribune section. So for him to get second team wasn't bad !!!!!!! Next year they play the big schools, let's see how he does then.......

Valley Subscribers,
Please understand the ongoing complaints of San Dimas High School. Barbone was screwed for Back of the Year in VVL and wait til the All CIF lists come out, it will happen again, watch. In my opinion, the kid is very tough and skilled, he was not the player of the year in the valley, nor is he the best player in the area, but he's very good. With that being said, us San Dimas fans have not had a lot of experience with good football players in the past and when one of our own get the shaft, we feel like we're the only ones, which is completely untrue. Yes, we had Hackett (became way better in college) and Harden I believe was the name that went to Hawaii, but other than that, we've had crap...so please excuse us for now, our ignorance blinds us. The South Hills, Charter Oaks, Northviews, Covinas, and Bishop Amats who have had numerous players over the years get the shaft, we apologize for our whining.
Posted by: Paco | December 31, 2007 7:52 AM
Jay Bone,
Not true about Sumler, Jason Knowles from Northview had over 1200 yards rushing with at least 70 tackles and was barely honorable mention so don't think Rosemead is the only school that gets shafted by this paper.

What a windbag! Thanks Plaid Lad for taking the attention away from the players---AGAIN! Isn't this thread about the ALL AREA FOOTBALL TEAM?
"Finish IT!" Stupid is as stupid does. Welcome to Citrus. Where's that pretty white flash?! Where's my close up? Make up?
Just wondering if you will carry that "Finish It" sign to basketball games as well? I think Le Duc wouldn't allow it. But hey it's worth a good laugh.
Just wondering II. Who gets to wear the Letterman jacket at basketball games?
Is that a public or private joke?
Posted by: Hey windbag isn't this thread about ALL AREA? | December 31, 2007 12:41 AM
Plaid,
Interesting insight. I think one of the biggest advantages of private education is the element of self-selection. Essentially, parents are sending their kids to school with the kids of other parents who made a sacrifice to send their kids to private school. Hopefully, this results in a more focused atmosphere because all parents involved should want to see a return on their investment. One requirement I respect of many private schools is that parents are obligated to participate in certain school events, thereby taking ownership in the school community. It seems that successful public schools often have strong parental involvement. The notion that it takes a village to raise a child is supported through observing successful public and private schools.
Posted by: New York | December 30, 2007 9:15 PM
Public vs. Private
A lot can be said when comparing Public vs. Private school opportunities. I attended private school(s) and my kids all attended public.
Years ago the premiere education was considered that of private verses a public education.
I suppose the one-on-one opportunities and smaller class structuring hurdled a private education over that of an impacted public school system.
The general thought 40 years ago defined the word "public" with little interest and respect.
So, naturally when someone talked about "public" anything...such as public schools, public swimming pools, public restrooms, public transportation and/or public defenders...few found solace in what the general "public" had to offer.
So, out-of-pocket came the almighty dollar to pay for that, which we all considered better. With an established college bound curriculum and high standards backed by scholar teaching the effects of paying for your education meant that you received the best money could buy.
To entice additional interest, private schools went out and did some "Head-Hunting" of their own, for the sake securing knowledgeable sport figures that had proven their coaching abilities at every level of competition.
In the end, if the educational standards didn't interest a possible incoming candidate the success of their sports programs did.
This form of structuring is what put HS's such as Bishop Amat and other well known institutions on the map. Lowering those standards only erases years of established scholastic and athletic success and achievements.
The dilemma today (if there is one) questions why would a student athletes attend a costly private school over a public school that could offer better educational and athletic results.
Having interest on both sides of the fence, I can honestly say that I wouldn't sell my private education and athletic experiences for all the money in the world. Now, as I say that there are probably loads of grads from the public sector that would say the same.
I think it's save to say that the public sector learned well from its private rivals. Subsequently, we see a rise and success in student athletes at several of our public high schools.
Now, to answer the question as to why certain athletes departed from a private HS to wear the colors of public HS.....can only be answered by HE alone who made that decision, and no one else.
It's definitely easy to speculate over "why" it occurs and harder to discuss when exposed to the truth.

Posted by: All Cif | December 30, 2007 1:38 AM
Tra Sumler second team all-area. For what he have done on both sides of the ball, he deserve first team. How many players had over a 1,100 yards rushing and over 70 solo tackles ? If he was at another school, he would've got first team. But since he's at Rosemead, no love !!!!!!
Posted by: jay bone | December 30, 2007 12:43 AM
COY Skeptic,
Before I give my reason for disagreeing with you about coaches winning only with their players from their attendance zone etc..., hear me out...it's not the 80's or 90's anymore, the Bogans, Pasqys, Ganos, Farrars, all have players from different areas on their teams, but it's what CIF allows now, they are not breaking rules, yes, it's a benefit that kids come to their schools, but do you think a kid or kids would continue to migrate to these schools if the coach didn't have a good word of mouth around town? No, these guys get players because they win and they coach, yes, they do coach, I've seen each of them and they do have outstanding strengths, Bogans last 7 years of being in semis or more speaks for itself, Pasqy winning at different programs speaks for itself, and Gano scheduling the best teams in SGV and venturing into the OC, and winning 4 cif titles speaks volumes. I will ask you this, how fair is it for Ganesha to play San Dimas in sports straight up with only their players? There are advantages and disadvantages to the system the old way and the new way...Don't get me wrong, actively recruiting kids is wrong, but good kids wanting to play for good programs and good coaches is easy to understand.

For those of you upset for about a particular kicker/punter not being on the first team over a running back, you guys are crazy. WHO CARES ABOUT KICKERS!!!! Fred did the right thing by finding a way to get the best guys on the All-Area team. And by the way, Nico was a hell of a punter if you ever saw him.

I posted below the stats of two RB's against two very weak teams. I did not feel it was necessary to research the two teams against other comp they played this season since the stats of the two running backs were against two same teams.
As I said, both RB's had very good games. Congratulations to both RB's for being selected to the All Area First Team.

CIF needs to check out all the apartments that were leased last season. I know of kids going to schools, where their parents are paying rent/mortages on two locations RIGHT NOW!
The powers to be just don't do a complete check! If the paperwork fits, sign off on it!
Posted by: CIF-RIGHT? | December 28, 2007 9:01 PM
Why criticize men like Bogan and Gano when they aren't actually doing the recruiting but the program recruits because of the success they achieve every year. Their high profile transfers are as a result of them winning on a consistent high level every year. I imagine too open enrollment in both of their districts also has something to do with their success.
The difference between Bogan and Gano and say someone like Pasqy is there resume reads CHAMPIONSHIPS! I just made that last statement because are you insinuating Pasqy is winning with only Glendora football players? The Tartans too have several high profile young men including Jake Vega and Reggie Young that are transfers to Glendora.
Anyways, Bogan is too Christian to do anything corrupt or illegal!

Beg to Differ at December 27, 2007 10:48 PM
Unfortunately you only looked at two games that both teams were weak. If you did a better evaluation, you would have found the following:
Of the five top backs according to MaxP in SGV, here is how the numbers rolled up against the comp they played in a 10 game schedule.
Duarte played teams that were 36-63
San Dimas played teams that were 41-59
South Hills played teams that were 42-57
CO played teams that were 50-49-1
Wilson played teams that were 53-46-1
Including Playoffs the above teams were ranked as follows:
Duarte rating -2.5 Strength -15.4
SD rating +16.8 Strength -0.8
SH rating +33.9 Strength +15.9
CO rating +30.0 Strength +17
Wilson rating +9.8 Strength +10.8
Now, it appears the numbers tell a better picture than just high stats. My opinion Gilmore is player of the year! Harris had better numbers than all of the above, but sorry to say Duarte schedule and team rating isn’t very good!

I've said it before and I'll say it again...until Bogan (and others) win WITHOUT high profile transfers into their schools, they can't be COY! Anybody can coach and win with the best athletes in the area. Try doing it with the guys who actually live in your school district!

This is directed to the poster who said that Barbone can play with anybody and that Harris numbers are against the worst league and his pre-season teams were weak.
Both Barbone and Harris had games against Ganesha and Gladstone. According to MaxPreps their stats are:
Against Gladstone Barbone rushed for 221 yards (21 carries)and scored 2 TD's. He rushed for 130 yards(10 carries)and scored 2 touchdowns against Ganesha. Two very good games!
Against Gladstone Harris rushed for 322 yards (23 carries) and 3 TD's. He rushed for 224 yards,(10 carries), threw 1 touchdown pass, and scored 6 touchdowns against Ganesha. Two great games!
There is no need to downplay an athlete's performance.

Best of luck to every team in the Sierra League. The sky is the limit!
I thought something was wrong when Chino Hills played Damien. They were missing that Chino HHills fire and swagger.
Best of luck to Coach Roche.

take at December 26, 2007 11:09 PM
The reality in sports, is a very few will play college football or make the NFL.
You could probably do some research and see that very few SGV First or Second Team players go on!
However, if you look at the graduation percentages of Football programs that there players even graduate from college is pretty interesting. Alot of players simply drop out of college after the game is over. Pretty sad situation!
As far as this list, the Juniors will be back next year and some of these Seniors are moving on. It takes the grades, SAT scores and some LUCK to get a CHANCE to play at the next level, not just Stats.
Posted by: Go SGV | December 27, 2007 10:17 AM
I guess that when you cannot make the Tribune team as running back then you will always have a shot as a punter or kicker. Little League politics at its very best!
Posted by: oldschoolpanther | December 27, 2007 9:34 AM
We have a couple more days of other all area teams to release, but starting next week, after the New Year, we'll start talking prep football 2008.
Posted by: FredJ | December 27, 2007 9:07 AM
where are the kickers from west Covina???? These kickers averaged about 3/4 kicks deep in the inzone every game!!! What's up with that??? West Covina had two great kickers, not only Robert rodriguez being a senior but Thomas Flores as a JUNIOR!!! He was all-area last year as a sophomore... It should have easily been both these kickers up there first or second team but they're not even mentioned.....
Posted by: watch us next season!!!! | December 27, 2007 8:40 AM
Why aren't stats considered while picking the "best 26"? Funny some players who already have offers and kids who led their league in stats didn't make the list. Reminds me of the politics of little league..Makes you say hmmmm

Best of luck to him , I know RHS has A LONG TRADITION of SOLID Kickers ! Gary Rios former RHS Kicker has been coaching there for YEARS & DESERVES ALOT OF CREDIT , Matt Koffler & Rosemead should be thankful for Gary Rios being on their Staff .

I really do not understand how you can miss a kid like Rosemeads kicker Bobby Maldanado. Bobby ranks aa one of the best kickers in the state as well as 59th in the nation as a punter with no one even coming close from the San Gabriel Valley. The MVL coaches picked him as the best kicker in the league two years in a row and he is only a junior. Next time please look at your stats and be fair!

If you have ever seen this kid play he is very very good and I wish him the best, the problem is most of the Barbone comments seem biased towards him and I believe in the long run that hurts him...

Agree with some of your thoughts, but you know Barbone can play with anybody.
Harris numbers are against the worst league and his pre-season teams were weak, except one team.
It looks like Fred was trying to pick the best 26 players, and Barbone ended up on first team. I dont think it matters that it was in the punter category, because the kid plays SS,RB and Punts. A good kid and complete player.
By the way, he made first team RB for Inland valley.

Breaking news,
Giambi and McGuire worked their butts off too and ate like it was their job...25 to 30 lbs. easy is what it looks like on this guy. Elaborate some more Victor Conte.

Easy So Cal Fan...Your love for Bogan is cool and respected...the guy does a great job year in and year out, but knocking Pasqy is not cool. The guy did a great job this year and put Glendora back to the Karno days. What difference does it make if Pasqy teaches or what subject he teaches and Bogan doing Government...that was a stupid comment...back in the day, Pasqy taught Math, which is impressive for a football coach to do...Pete Carroll doesn't get coach of the year often, but wouldn't you like him in your corner? Bogan is good.
Posted by: PasqyCoy | December 26, 2007 7:14 PM
The best thing you can do for Cameron Deen is leave him off this list. You might as well accused Bogan of spying, cause next year South HIlls is coming out gunning and will leave everyone in their dust! I don't want to hear anyone complain of South Hills running up the score, cuz Cameron is going to surgically remove team's hearts by half time. Nice job Dorian!
By the way, does Pasqi even teach? Bogan teaches 4 period of Government. Sorry, I know I sound like a band wagoner but Bog's is coach of the year...Let's be real about this!

Have to agree Nico is pretty good, I am actually an early supporter of his skills going back to his Sophmore year when he ran hard against my Colts...
Keep in mind there are alot of stars in the SGV and Fred has to look at things objectively...
If Nico transferred to lets say Amat and put up those numbers on both sides of the ball against D1 opposition the kid would be headed to game day on Saturdays, however in the VVL (And yes even against Oaks Christian) those numbers are well...
Against lower level competition...
Too soon to put him into his third year of success also dont you think since he hasnt even gotten past his Junior year, give the kid a break please...
All the lobbying for him on here worked against him, thats my opinion and I wish the kid all the best so let him do what he does best on the field and not on the blog...

Sorry but where is Nico Barbone at the running back position. That's a huge oversight. Seeing as he's done it for 2, that's two, okay for the hard of reading and football challenged II years. How many RBs can say they were the featured back for 3 years running? Which Nico will accomplish after next year. What's that over 3000 yards over 2 seasons plus countless TDs and BIG RUNS and starting on defense as well. AND HIS SENIOR SEASON IS STILL GOING TO BE HIS BEST. Glad you made room for him at Punter Fred but "come on!" what's the thinking there?
Maybe someone will come up with a clever comeback or a unwarranted putdown of his mom but in terms of football only logic, that's a BAD BEAT!
Looking forward to Nico's senior season.
Here's a question?
What happened to Jon Rabe?

#7 for C. Oak should've been honored for most rapid weight gain in a season. Hmm, anyone care to elaborate?

In the first place it's always great to see the boys get a little more press, so guys, congratulations.
From there I think it's fair to say , (in my opinion, at least), that the process of pigeon-holing players into predetermined positions reduces the value of the awards to some of the kids and in a few instances over-values the contribution on the “wrong” side of the ball just to find them a spot on the list.
Remember that the value placed on one player or another by a single coach, (usually his own), can swing an all-league spot and that doesn't always mean that player was best at that position, even in just his own league, but that the coach did a better “selling” job for that kid.
Which brings me to the “Ali vs Louis” type arguments you will get with these lists simply because every team plays a different schedule and it's impossible to properly compare a player whose successes came against Gabrielino and Mt. View against a kid who faced teams in the Miramonte or Sierra. For that matter, is it fair to judge a QB or receiver, based on stats, who plays on a power type offense against one who gets double the throws playing a West Coast formation?
Better to just pick the best players in the area regardless of position. Bumper crop of RB's? Pick as many as you like. For votes, start each coach with the same number of picks as there are teams in the league that correspond to the area. The San Antonio and Miramonte guys would start with five each, the Sierra teams, Damien and Glendora would get two each. Add three votes to each league champ, two for second, and one for a 3rd place finish, (divide the votes in case of a tie). Tack another vote for a playoff win(s).
For instance:
West Covina – 8 {5 (area teams in league) + 2 (second place in league) + 1 (playoff win)
Glendora – 6 {2 (area teams in league) + 3 (won league) + 1 (playoff win)}
South Hills – 10 {5 (area teams in league) + 3 (won league) + 2 (playoff wins)}
Damien – 2 {2 (area teams in league)}
Los Altos – 5 {5 (area teams in league)}
SEM – 9 {5 (area teams in league) + 3 (won league) + 1 (playoff win)}
Charter Oak – 10 10 {5 (area teams in league) + 3 (won league) + 2 (playoff wins)}
Rowland – 6 {5 (area teams in league) + 1 (finished third in league)}
Give Fred and Steve each a half vote for each team in the area, 20-25, whatever, and let the coachies horse trade among themselves if they like.
Top vote getter is POY, #'s 2 through 13 are first team, the next dozen receive second team.

Mean Machine what's all this about Alicia Keyes. Should we be worried about you again?
Posted by: Perry Como | December 26, 2007 10:21 AM

Deen takes over a QB and leads the way for te best team in the vally also haing a 10 win streak. Bromstead leadds the CIF in TE receptions

How does Lenhart of Amat make 2nd team as a punter on Defense. Punter is an offensive catagory. It would have been nice to see Rodriguez and McBride from Los Altos stay healthy, thet would have been first team.
It looks as though Amat has some good young players, someone tell me where they will be playing next year. I am hearing that Gilmore from Wilson will be playing at St. Paul next year.
Fred,
Lets take a poll on the Juniors. We know they will be here next year again but lets try to see how many are wearing the same uniforms.
Anyone out there,
Any word on Verti yet????
Congratulations to all of you.............

What? I'm in a great mood so I'll refrain from making my observations known until tomorrow. But here's a taste...coaching matters.
Congratulations to COY Mark Paquerella.
By the way...I got my first Game Ball since high school today....unlike those I'll never lose sight of this one!
Anyone hear Alicia Keyes song "No One"....it puts it out there....God Bless those that never give up and fight the good fight. Tomorrow is another day...make a difference in someone's life...get in the game. Make a play!
Thanks Fred.

Merry New Year and Happy Christmas everyone!
Congrats to Pasqy on the coach of the year even though I am not a Glendora fan. Is he the Larry Brown of high school football? Successful everywhere he goes but gets tired and moves on. I liked his comment at the end of Fred's article where he said this is his last stop. Reminds me of Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino who both said the same thing with the Dolphins and Falcons only to go back to college. I wonder what school will come along and offer Pasqy the bank and where will he go next? After all isn't that why he left Damien to go to a public school who could pay him more? Stay tuned!!
A South El Monte QB as best in the valley? Hardly. I would bet Chris Allen at CO is better than Garay. Defend your choice Fred

looks like the whole charter oak team is either on the first team or second team which is really understandable considering they were the best team in the valley this season period! didn't dorian wells get kicked out of bishop amat>??

Fred
Nice selection on Head Coach of the Year. Coach P has proven himself while at GHS, as well as having the opportunity elsewhere within the SGV. This next year will undoubtedly be another challenge for Coach P and Company, and we are confident that he'll return with more to talk about as the season matures. Congrats to Coach P and his entire supporting cast of coaches. You are the BEST!

Not everyone is on the team at their natural or best position. Most, if not all of these players played more than one position. The key is try and get the best 26 on the team.

Yes, Cogburn came in and did a video. I couldn't find it either, obviously nothing I can do today on Chritsmas, but when I get back to work on Tuesday, I'll have our techs put it up. Sorry for the inconvenience.
