Wrestling: Northview on top; Williams the top dog
I know, I know, this is a wrestling town. I'm watching the Mayweather-Hatton fight the other night, and our host Joe took it as an opportunity to bug me all night about wrestling coverage. That's what I get for going to an SC guys house. My roommate says he's a former CIF champion who happens to be another Joe, though I can't find his title anywhere in the record books. I'll let him go on this, he's too proud of that mythical title. But I know he's still into it, he spent a free weekend at the Northview tournament. Who does that? Listen, I'm no stranger to wrestling, not after watching one of the greatest wrestling teams of all time in the San Gabriel Valley. The 1983 Ray Rodi coached Edgewood Trojans won the 2-A title and could have wrestled with anyone. We had Scott Schumm, the 132-pound state title winner whose letterman jacket was so decorated you just wanted to touch it. Those were the days when wrestling was King. Our wrestling matches were bigger than basketball, and that's the truth. The stands were packed and the fans were loud. It was like those old-time wrestling movies. If you saw "Vision Quest" you know what I mean. Anyways, Steve Ramirez will keep a wrestling thread going once a week, and I'll chime in too. I told him I think we need a weekly top ten at each wrestling weight and he said that will take some time to put together, but you can help keep us up to speed, that is if you show the same passion on these threads that you have for your sport.
Well, here goes, this is Steve' preseason top five

Can't touch this: South Hills' Thomas Williams, the defending 112-pound state champion.
1. Northview
2. South Hills
3. Bishop Amat
4. Rosemead
5. San Dimas

san dimas??? are you trying to say that san dimas has a good wrestling program?? how are they doing
san dimas san dimas
Viking, Props to Alcantar. I finally had a chance to watch him and he blew threw most of the tourney. He is very good. I have to say that he caught Silva fair and Square. That match IMO was a race to who got to do thier specialty first. Props to Alcantar again he did his thing and won... This wont be the last time they meet. BTW Silva also blew threw the tourney pinning everyone but Northview. I believe these two young men, among others, will only be getting better and will give us some great matches.
nacho libre:: WHAT HAPPENED? YOU SAID THAT SILVA FROM BISHOP WOULD NOT ONLY WIN HIM, BUT HE WOULD PIN HIM... DO YOU KNOW WHO ALCANTAR IS NOW???? HE IS THE ONE THAT PINNED SILVA IN THE 2ND ROUND AT LEMOORE. GREAT JOB TO ALL THE SGV WRESTLERS!!!
Damien sweeps Glendora. Congratulations to all the Spartans and to Coach Frank and Dan Lucero.
Great Job!
Vike ...FYI
Northview is KILLER in Wrestling , BUT Rosemead is also GOOD & has been for 20+ years .Best of Luck to the SGV & ALL wrestling programs .
Fight On
TM
We are crossing our fingers Stevie will make it back on or before league finals.. I will be at the Lemoore Bash this weekend? Any other tourneys I should look out for?
stevie espindola from bishop amat is out for the season with a fracture that he got early in his hs career. And julian silva is by far the best 215 wrestler in the VALLEY!! Go amat!
Its great see to a thread and articles dedicated to wrestling. I believe the SGV has represented Southern California very well year after year! Success is news, and the Tribune does its residents/readers a disservice when our wrestling successes are not only reported but "Pursued".
Now back to wrestling....I understand Northview will be sending some wrestlers to the Lemore Bash? Will it be your A or B team? It would be great to see some of our Amat guys match-up!
I dont think there is a guy out there in the SGV that can beat Bishop Amats Julian Silva at 215 lbs. Alcantar of NV is good but Silva would beat him , not only beat him but Pin him.

That's if he doesn't transfer out.
Lets give a shout out to this thread for the great sport of wrestling. To the boys of South Hills...to be continued
Northview Wrestling arguably could be the most successful and dominant sports program in the San Gabriel Valley. 10 or 11 straight League Titles and numerous CIF Titles and sending multiple guys to the state championships every year. If this was football, basketball, or baseball, it would be known as a dynasty in the SGV...Ask yourself this, what else compares?

Glad to see wrestling getting some love to the person who wrote that WC was going to be the underdogs, we're a little too green for that this year, but give us some time and we might surprise people next year.
Shirley
i think WC is going to be the underdogs this season and they will prevail!!!

Edgewood won the state wrestling title in 83' and probably was the test team in the early 80's; however, Northview has always had a great program

i might be showing my age, but in my day at south hills h.s wrestling were king the state champions and the football team were just cif finalist. my question is ? how can you let northview rule the the valley . the year 1983 , wow 25 years ago . south hills needs to restablish wrestling , kinda what bogan has done in football. reaction ?
Outsider,
Stevie is hurt, I don't believe its for the whole season though. Either way him not being in the line up hurts us...
Now this is something that warrants a post from me. Thank you FJ... Always look forward to reading your blog.
Im so glad wrestling is here. Northview is off to a good start. The NV JV team looks pretty good too. The VARSITY and JV Teams beat South Hills a couple of weeks ago... GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE SGV WRESTLING TEAMS!!
i heard that espindola is out for the season.. hope its not true
I can't believe i left off Devin @125. That kid is a hoot to watch...
It must be mighty cold in hell right now.. A thread for wrestling?!?!?! HAHA.. All kidding aside. Thanks Fred and Steve. Keep it up. Here are some kids to look for from Amat. Villareal-103, Espindola-112, Ortega-119, Escamilla-152, Hernandez-189, Silva-215, & Rojano-HWT. Any info on studs from other programs would be great too.
