Baseball? Yup, just around the corner ...
This preseason baseball poll was posted on another thread by Baseball Nut. Is he close? In the coming weeks I'll start calling on baseball coaches to discuss the preview. I'm certainly interested in your thoughts on the top teams, top players, etc.

1.Charter Oak --- Returning all of starting infield and ace garkow.
2.Bishop Amat--- Lost maverick and other key seniors but still alot left.
3.Northview--- Super soph's lose big lead to other vikings or would be at dodger stadium.
4.Nogales--- Melchor should be tough to beat, just like last year.
5.San Dimas---Kevin ponzo,,see above message.
6.Bonita---Lost lead and a heartbreaker to Northview in playoffs.
7. Diamond Bar---Solid Program,solid team.
8. Covina--Only seniors to leave, flock, gomez, hansen.Returning ty pill to a team that beat sd,nv and lost only 4-2 to charter oak in playoffs.
9.Los Altos---Suprised alot of people last year and should be improved.
10.South Hills---Would be ranked higher but choke in playoffs every year and horrible coach.
Please feel free to make your own list and put in any omissions. PLAY BALL!!!

A thoughtful insight and ideas I will use on my website. You've obviously spent some time on this. Well done!
It’s exhausting to search out knowledgeable people on this topic, however you sound like you realize what you’re talking about! Thanks
I know this is really boring and you are skipping to the next comment, but I just wanted to throw you a big thanks, you cleared up some things for me!
so informative, thanks to tell us.
Joe Friday Bonilla would be the third string catcher on this years team..Lopez is not eligible....
Explain how they let and did not care if Kevin Bonilla their starting catcher left without trying to keep him. Pompous! what they had a Duke as the backup catcher. Frank Lopez a good hitter and fast as all hell. where is he...I know grades and those have come up ,but it was told to him he would not start let me guess a duke or a higher paying kiss ass dad took /errrrrrrrrr stole that from him.
Seems to me with all the talent in the area(especially '09 class) another CIF TITLE may be coming this way. Most of the top 10 is in Div.4.
Then again I may have "NO CLUE".
ON A POSSITIVE NOTE, CONGRATS TO THE PLAYER/STUDENTS WHO SIGNED LETTERS OF INTENT TO GO TO DIV.1 COLLEGE BASABALL.COVINA TYLER PILL CAL. ST FULLERTON SAN DIMAS JORDAN LEYLAND UC IRVINE AMATS TOMMY REYES UC IRVINE.THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT. GOOD JOB TO YOU THREE.
"Like a good neighbor...ColtsColtsColts is there" Coltsx3 thanks for having our back. We've had some real dogfights with you like a good rivaly should, but at the end of the day, there is a respect from the schools and the coaching staffs of each school. Over the years, we've lost kids to neighboring schools, even each other, but there also have been times where one school refused to allow a kid in over respect for the other school. Kudos to you and let's talk about some good players like SGV Baseball mentioned.
The whole transfer talk is pointless. Parents are going to place their children where ever they feel best suited. Let try to get to the topic at hand. I posted this earlier and did not get many names added after. Let's hear from the rest of you about other top players. Mentioned if anyone is being recruited.
I think this will be one of the better years in SGV for baseball. There are a lot of quality players in the area. I know some of the players in the Valley and will start the list. I would like to hear from everyone because it is hard to know 'em all

This is enough to start. Let' hear the rest. I hope we can keep it positive.
bbguy---nice try and YES ALL the schools have transfers unlike your school NV and Covina are totally legit...count on it..We knows kids very WELL at both schools & The administrations, ad's and coaches do not play THAT game. that is your school... drinks on
bbguy,
coltsx3 isn't admitting anything that been done illegally. NV and Covina have been successful, so kids have decided to go to those schools. Should mention the kids that Covina and Northview have lost in football and baseball to neighboring schools. Covina has lost a slew of football kids to South Hills over the years and Northview has in baseball. Angel Marti, a starter at South Hills last two years, lived across street from Northview and the Tiffany brothers at Charter Oak live in the Northview area as well. Garkow from Charter Oak is a Glendora kid that was cut. Someone mentioned Sena, he lives right by Northview and should've been there the whole time. West Covina has lost kids to a neighboring school. Bonita has gotten kids from Pomona over the years. Point is, this is going on all the time, do we need to go on and on about non ending story?
Trasfer talk is a ridiculous topic to even have on here because it's not the old rule anymore and what was taboo before isn't anymore. Are we going to tear down some good programs because of a transfer that we sitting here quite possibly don't know how it traspired? Is this what this board has become? There are numerous kids that have never attended schools that they live by, but once again, which people don't seem to understand, if you get a permit, you are legally abiding by the rules. There is no rule being broken. The rule breakers are those who lie about addresses.
This is how it works...I know from knowing successful coaches in the area from football to basketball to baseball. When you win and get kids to college ball or a few of your kids get drafted in baseball, parents of kids seek you and your school out because they want to be a part of that success. What is a coach supposed to do when a kid wants to come to their school and play and family moves to your area? You actually can't say no. They have the right to attend your school. Of course, a coach doesn't mind a talented qb or pitcher coming in, who would mind that, but a lot of the programs you are mentioning have kids coming to them. Do you think Bogan went after Wells? Do you think Ochoa (Wrestling at Northview) has to recruit? Just realize this, all these coches aren't getting all excited when a transfer comes in, it can be a pain in the a**.
I have no ties to any school so no chance of the pooh hitting the fan. . I just go what I have heard from the grapvine. I have no idea of any EM Dukes coaches are. I was not sure they still were running. Can anyone confirm the Macias kid moved to the area? I heard he started at Garfield, then Cantwell and now Northview. Coltsx3, so at least you acknowledge NV and Covina had some things since you say they don't do half of what SD does.
Hey bb guy
you forgot to mention estrella & urbina(rosemead/mp angels)sena(La Puente).
The asst coach you are talking about is that the coach from the El Monte dukes? nice hook ups everywhere.
BBGUY Z---YOU DON'T EVEN WANT TO GO THERE----THE SH** WILL HIT THE FAN ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL SOON ENOUGH.. SO CAREFUL THERE BIG GUY....NV AND COVINA DO NOT PULL 1/2 THE CR** SD DOES. I KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT BOTH (N&C) SCHOOLS, THEIR B-YARDS ARE PRETTY CLEAN.
Let's not bring Northview in the mix of transfers.....They are rather questionable themselves. The kid Macias from Cantwell is on his third HS at Northview with out moving. What a coincidence he knows an assistant coach. Hmmmmmm.
bob at January 24, 2008 9:37 PM
SORRY BOB BUT THE COACHES AT SD SUCK AND ARE CRAZY AHOLES ON THE FIELD!
ANY RUMORS ABOUT THESE LOSERS ARE PROBABLY TRUE!
you guys need to stop complaining about san dimas. get a life!! stop crying about all this transfer that your hearing. its not true. san dimas has talent so does northveiw and covina. there all good teams with great talent. so stop saying the negative comments about san dimas players and coaches. they are a good team with talent. everyone knows it. well good luck to all teams.
N. Barbone has now leaked over to the baseball board...why? Come on, this unwavoring blog support is getting tiresome. Wouldn't doubt he doesn't play because of the coach.
Is there any reason why Nico Barbone does not play on the baseball team. I understand he can crush a baseball.
Rumors are things being said that are not factual or proven to be true...so that's not the right word about San Dimas coach...It's factual on the things being said etc...Gotta wonder why they still have Private Investigator on the case...I will tell you this, the Bonita USD are sticking their necks out protecting this guy...I'd be livid if I was a parent and some of the things happened with my kid around.
colts kick butt at January 23, 2008 11:52 AM
The rumors about this clown are horrible. The reason the fans get out of control is because someone cannot lead the ship!
This clown is the biggest lair and has displayed unbelievable behavior and has broken every rule set forth in the Bonita Unified School District.
regardless, i just want my kid to have a great year and i know somehow the truth will come out. good luck sd!!!!!
PEOPLE - BELIEVE ME - WE HAVE DONE OUR BEST TO GET RID OF OUR BB COACH. HE IS EVERYTHING I DEPLORE IN A COACH AND MOST OF US HAVE TO SIT BACK AND HOPE OUR KID DOESN'T SUFFER FOR THE BACKLASH. ANYWAYS -- GOOD LUCK SAINTS, WE WISH YOU THE BEST. BE STRONG AND HONEST YOUNG MEN OUT THERE, ESPITE YOUR LEADER.
damiens nick quiney is looking good this year and so is the rest of the damien baseball team they should adleast be in the top 10
Can't stand the way San Dimas team plays bb, their fans are loud and rude!!!! so i have to believe all rumors about coach, dont think too highly of him either.just play ball, keep your kids under control and show some class. it seems pretty cut and dry.
SDISBS at January 22, 2008 3:54 PM
You nailed it! Coach at SD has big skeltons in his closet and leadership issues!
If it is the Licon kid they have after him for while.
Oh another 'mysterious' transfer to San Dimas? That is BS man! Why do they keep getting away with that cr**? shady coach - shady team. karma baby. Cheaters never prosper, haven't you figured that out by now?
I HOPE PEDROZA DOMINATES AGAIN - MAN THAT KID CAN PLAY BALL. GREAT LOCAL FAMILY STORY AS WELL. WE ARE EXCITED AGAIN ABOUT BASEBALL AT NORTHVIEW HIGH! THEY ARE A GREAT GROUP OF KIDS, WE ARE BEHIND THEM ALL THE WAY. KEEP UNITED AND YOU WILL BE UNTOUCHABLE NOT 1 OR 2 TWO STARS BUT A TEAM FULL OF "PLAYERS" THAT WILL DO WHATEVER TO WIN
i went off that C.O scoreboard last year haha. once again this year? we'll see
Who is the new San Dimas transfer? I heard they got a new kid from Diamond Ranch.
Watch out for San dimas Watch for Leyland and Ponzo to carry the team this team is solid this year
I think if Reyes arm is good to go he may see some pitching action this year. The rest of Amats staff is maybe 1 or two deep. tough to replace Esubio and Maverick. Icky is not the answer he is too young right now and will get shalacked by senior players. His time is coming down the road. I do not see a repeat but we will be in the dance.
Didn't Alcantara get cut?? Wouldn't Reyes or perhaps Mistone be given the call next?
Just wondering.....
The Amat staff will have a group solid arms. Zuniga is the clear #1 but who knows after that. I hear that Alacantara and Icky are at the bottom of the pitching list. They have some young arms that are good.
This thread needs to heat up...how do the Amat pitchers stack up against last years two starters Maverick and Eusebio? Who gets the opening day call against C. Oak? Is Garkow one year wonder or does he continue to stick it against the Glendora program who cut him? Is Pedroza best SS in the area? Who does Bonita have on the hill besides Gio?
Continue to be cool with each other, but who is out there...let us know what you think.
I would have to say based on returning number of innings thrown last year Zuniga is probably one of them and I would guess the other is Icky or Alcantara
So does anybody know who Amats 2 starting pitchers are
So does anybody know who Amats 2 starting pitchers are
You hit it on the head better than obviously Pasadena did. It's unfortunate that one shouldn't get a second chance in this case, but this is one of those cases that you just don't get a break because the crime was too severe. A plea agreement is not proclaiming innocence by no means and that was the only crime that was actually handled by law enforcement. Arcadia HS had come to know that there were other things going on too and was stuck between a rock and a hard place on what to do because of the adulation of the man being a home grown talent and the team winning...you could say that the school put winning before honor. I think a big time article could be done on what happened at Arcadia with this guy, but the local media won't pursue it...This is a LA Times story waiting to happen. People would be shocked if they knew all the things that were taking place.
Shame on Pasadena High School for allowing that guy on their campus around the kids. As a school, you owe it to your kids to know who you put before them in a leadership role. On a Babe Ruth Baseball trip to the east coast, this guy was drinking alcohol with the kids in his room, thus, he was sent home. I saw this Arcadia aftermath unfold after Parisi was dismissed from close range and the only thing that sickened me more than the man himself was the parents that supported him after all the the "juice" came out. Ask the kids, it's no secret that these things did take place. The best thing Pasadena did in regards to this hiring is not put him in charge of ASB because than he'd be in charge of parties and we all know what goes on at Parisi parties.
The hiring of Mike Parisi by Pasadena High School makes me absolutely sick. I've been disgusted at things I've seen in high school sports, but this is incredible. In today's article, the athletic director from Pasadena High named Mr. Brooks says, "We checked his background, came back clean"...also says something like, we didn't listen to rumors etc...let me tell you something, those allegations are 100% absolutely true. Who did the background check? Parisi himself? Come on Brooks and Pasadena, if you acknowledged the mistakes made by Mike and decided to move on, that would be one thing, but to say you did a background check and nothing came back negatively, you either didn't do a background check or two, you chose to ignore what you heard. Sorry, but you don't get a second chance around kids when you date them, do drugs, drink alcohol, be their bookie, and rat out your former players in a CIF Baseball Game because of stupid a^^ rule that got them eliminated. Yes, he got his former players kicked out of the playoffs by telling the opposing coach of a rule infraction. This is who you want running your program Pasadena? I'm embarrassed today to be a high school supporter and to be frank, I hope you fall flat on your face Parisi.
thats funny cuz im pretty sure damien came in ahead of both glendora and ayala last year, but it might have been just my imagination
Glendora Tournament
The annual Glendora Tournament schedule has been posted and as usual, there are (cue Keith Jackson voice here) gonna be some barn burners. Here are three I that I've already got on the calendar:
Saturday March 1 – Bishop Amat vs Charter Oak 7 PM
Tuesday March 4 – Bonita vs Northview 3:30 PM
Wednesday March 5 – Glendora vs Charter Oak 7 PM
All of these games are at Henderson Field in Glendora.
Damien is only under the radar because they are coming in off a season that was downright embarrassing. Rumors are that they are getting/or have gotten a brand new infield surface for this season. Finally! They actually do have some talent and should compete for a 2nd or 3rd place spot in the always-tough Sierra league. Now if you want to talk true under the radar stuff, what about Glendora? or even Ayals? Should be interesting in that league behind preseason favorite Chino Hills
How the heck is Walnut boys baseball team going to surprise SH and WC.? They completely suck and what they did have graduated. Brett English is the only pitcher they have. after him there is nothing in that bully. we rocked their pitchers last year and we will rock them this year. Walnut cannot hit and their coaching makes some bonehead moves. Their catcher weighs what 102 pounds? like football their boys teams just do not measure up to the boys from the north side of west covina.
What about the "sleepers. Here's 2:
Baldwin Park- Every year they manage to trip someone up.
Walnut - They may suprise both "Dog" teams in the San Antonio League.
NV Vikings#1 - Christian Ibarra is pretty good, but Jacob Shirley (WC) may be better.
It should be a GREAT YEAR!
The new boys varsity baseball coach at Arroyo is none other than D.J. MacKinnon. MacKinnon won 178 games at Arroyo as the varsity football head coach from 1980-2002, including 14, yes 14! league championships and one CIF championship in 1986. GO KNIGHTS GO!
Damien is gunna come in under the radar
OH WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOME FUN THIS YEAR!!! LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE, LETS ROCK AND ROLL....OR JUST PLAY BALL... SPRING IS IN THE AIR - IT'S TIME PEOPLE....CAN YOU SMELL...OH I AM GETTING CARRIED AWAY GOOD LUCK TO ALL

RYNO--YOU NAILED IT...I THINK AND I HAVE NO NEED TO KISS A** THAT FRED HAS MORE INTEGRITY AND COMMON SENSE IN HIS LITTLE FINGER THEN A... HAD IN HIS BIG OVERBLOWN BODY. AGAIN, OLD NEWS - PAY ATTENTION FRED - YOU WILL CATCH ON QUICK WHO THE 'GOOD GUYS' ARE, COACHES THAT KNOW THEIR SPORT AND CAN SPEAK WITH FAIRNESS AND SHARE THEIR WISDOM. I KNOW A FEW AND THEY HAVE ALREADY BEEN MENTIONED ON THIS BLOG.
CO DAWG,
Chill man, those who know TQ understand what he does. Fred could be greatest prep writer around, but the media as a whole is never going to get it completely right. I didn't question the big guy Aram's work ethic, I did question him not using better sources on what kids and coaches deserve honors etc. along with a few other things, but that's old news now. There's some good coaches out there who have done great jobs in various sports and Aram didn't give them a sniff. It's funny, the guys who know the game know who the legit coaches are and where and who you'd trust your kid with to develop and get prepared for life with and than there are those that the media portrays. That's my beef with really using sources and people that know to help you as a writer get it right. Big guy had ego and wanted his voice heard.
fred -- you better give Quinley more respect then aram ever did -- start all over with him. He is a good guy - believe me.
NORTHVIEW is going to get crazy this year. I am bursting with excitement, our boys (YES-I have a kid playing-so of course I am biased) are UNITED, DETERMINED and SET to get another chance at Dodger or Angel stadium. It still hurts to talk about the loss and YES as someone mentioned earlier - the best team does NOT always win the title but props to CO. There are plenty of good kids there also. I am almost afraid to talk about how good the Vikes should be, hate to jinx anything. Murph will do his job as he always does and the boys will do what they do best -- PLAY HARD AND WIN GAMES GOOD LUCK VIKINGS -- DO US PROUD
Big ups to the Vikes also.
That's why I said, "...and the rest..." Maybe too many to mention.
We should get some from Glendora, Los Altos, San Dimas and more. Let's hear them.
Joe Amat,
Don't forget the Vikings of Northview.
Sergio Pedroza at Fullerton 02
Hector Estrella at USC '03,
Jaime Pedroza at UCR '04,
and Gilbert Urbina '03 at Saint Mary's,
and a share of div. 2 and 3 kids at local colleges
and 7 or 8 kids on Citrus College Baseball Team.
I'm sure that a bundle of lancers can go on the list and I'm sure that I'll miss some basing oit on memory - but here is a short list. And I didn't include a number that are playing at smaller DIII colleges, that also deserve recognition. I apologize in advance for those I missed.

The SGV is a GREAT baseball area and there are bundles from several schools. This might not be a bad time to give props to all of those great players in the last 5 years that have furthered their education thru baseball coming from schools with a great history of baseball success like South Hills, Covina, Charter Oak and the rest.
Baseball Nut,
Kudos to your top 10...I agree with it....You're a smart man. lol. I respect your opinion on Charter Oak last year and Northview's. That's what makes conversation good when it's respectful. Nothing negative to say about the boys from Charter Oak and their championship, but you and I know in all sports, the best team doesn't always win the championship. For instance, '88 Dodgers or NC State Basketball with Valvano at the reigns...This isn't to say that they weren't the best team, but there are those who believe a team from the west side of Covina was as good or better. Things happen and that's what makes sports great. It would be boring if you could pick the winner before the season starts. I didn't go to Northview, but I've had a couple kids go through and I still follow the baseball scene closely. There's a difference to state "Northview was better" as to say "I think Northview was better". Northview and Charter Oak will meet again, but they also have San Dimas and Bonita to worry about too in their leagues. In fact, it will be interesting to see how these two teams play as the huntee rather than the hunter.
Tex
I like your insights,your knowledge of the high school baseball scene is immense. This is the reason I started the topic because of so many informed fans stating their opinion.Kudos. Your top ten is the same as mine with one exception.Glendora instead of Los Altos. And the more I think about it, I agree with you. The kid roundtree is VERY good,I saw him play at arcadia with the SGV all stars and he is the real deal. However I respectfully take exception with two of your points;
1.Charter Oak IS the best team in Division four. They proved it last year and have almost the same team.(Key losses, nyholt,of injured torres, mcvey). I went to NV,it is my school,I know coach murphy and his family and they have all of my respect but....
2. Charter Oak earned the right to play in dodger stadium by fighting off good teams. They fought off a pesky Covina team and ty pill 4to2.They defeated the same SM vikings that ended your season. And they are very deep in the pitching rotation. And most importantly they are the defending CIF champion at the division four level. The concept of SCOREBOARD has never been clearer.
I look forward to your reply tex and very good luck to the outstanding Northview vikings in this years baseball season.
1. Bishop Amat- Strong supporting cask
2. South Hills- Solid talent
3. Charter Oak- strong returning team
4. Diamond Bar- SLEEPER...
5. Nogales- One guy makes it happen.. Big John
6. Glendora- Good talent. Coach is questionable
7. Northview- Will make strong appearance all year
8. Bonita- Will surprise everyone
9. Covina - If Pill goes, this team will go big!
10. San Dimas- Ponzo and Leyland.. Coach is horrible
Hey Joe Amat,
Since this a baseball thread please include in your illustrious roster:
Adam Simon 2002 UCLA
Mike Lange 2002 Santa Clara
Mark Esparza 2002 SDSU
Jordan Swaydan 2002 SDSU
Dont be surprised if Reyes pitches this year for Amat. Icky is a question mark? unproven at the varsity level. So Hills has Buffington as well which makes them a very good team. Lenhart and McClannhan also play baseball for Amat. I understand Frank Lopez Amats fleet foot reciever and a varsity baseball player on last years championship team is not playing this year due to academics.
please don't for get the big BLUE machine in that little school (SAN DIMAS)!!!!!!!!!
Re: Posted by: Tim at January 13, 2008 9:03 AM,
I will leave that answer to the coaches out of respect, you can most likely expect the same varsity players from last year along with a few additions from last years JV that are seniors this year...
Joe Colt
Save the public school vs. private school statements for another thread. The thread doesn't say anything about private vs. public...
Joe Colt, who will play for Covina this year?

And exposure might come when they come to see you...or the team your playing. Do you think that recruiters are more apt to come and see Orange Lutheran or Rosemead? Hart or Claremont? Carson or La Habra? St Paul or Nogales? Crespi or Covina? Loyola or La Habra. Notre Dame or...well you get the idea
We will find out right away. CO plays Amat the first game of the season. I expect full coverage by this paper. Garkow will start on the mound for the Chargers. Who will take the hill for Amat?
"the truth"
You misunderstand. I am not mad, but I am very dispointed and at a loss as to why someone would spend so much effort attacking an academic institution that so many people truly love.
Hey, it's ok not to like the sports programs of private schools or for that matter Amat's in particualar. Keep in mind that, no one forces anyone to go there, However the last time I looked, there was a long waiting list of people trying to get their kids in.
Public schools are great. But I decided to send my kids to Amat. Do you know why ? Because I believe that it is a superior institution to any of the schools on your list.
That is not to say that these schools are not in their own right good schools, but the facts are that a child who attends a private school, more often thatn not receives a far better education than what a public school can offer "most of the time." I am sure that even you will agree with that simple statement.
The Truth,
if you went to one of these schools (damien or amat).. what happened? why all of this hate?...did you not get a scholarship when you were young?... Did you not make the team?... Dont hate on these two schools for getting all of their students to college... 98 - 100% of senior students at these two schools all go to college every year... that is the difference.... and if they dont go to college, they go into the service or something else. Dont hate because of your bad high school experience. and as far as i know, i hear that this year, both of these schools have big hopes for this upcoming baseball season.. Watch out for these two schools
Jcaz don't be mad. I am not attacking anyone. Just facts. I know Bishop Amat hates to realize it but do the research. All the schools I have mentioned have quality coaching, academics, exposure, etc. Everything a potential scholarship player needs. It's not personal. Thanks for reading all my postings!
"The truth" is a sad sad man..........
I like the number 1 through 3 selections although I think Covina will bring it this year and should be ranked higher, Covina is putting together a solid returning cast along with some seniors that played jv last year and should make an impact...
Covina also has the kids more focused on baseball and conditioning in the pre season which I believe will make a difference, good job Coach Merrill and Coach Root...
South Hills is way underrated also with DLF returning, pretty tough shot at the head coach and a little premature...

Bishop Amat is like a payphone, it is no longer needed. Yes back in the days our parents sent us to Amat in hopes that they would provide a better education than the public school system. Many of us were not Catholics (forgive me Father). And, our dads sent us more talented athletes to Amat in hopes that we would get recognized by some college or pro recruit. We were very competitive, ranked in the state in most sports and at one time had a nationally ranked football team. Just like Army and Navy who use to have nationally ranked football teams in college and were able to produce great teams on the field, times have changed. In the 1940’s you could get a free education and play football for the Army powerhouse. You would graduate an officer and were pretty much assured a good quality life. The NFL was young and did not pay very much. But with the expansion of the NFL and the salaries that players began to make, serving in the military after college just wasn’t as intriguing as going to college and playing with the chance to go pro. My family is full of people who serve and has served proudly, so I am not putting down the Armed Forces, but simply making a point. How come high school players are more interested in playing for a USC, LSU, Florida, etc., than the army? The answer is simple. The payoff! What is the payoff for playing at Amat? Oh we know what you have to pay, but why? What purpose do Amat and Damien have in society today? Is the education at these two schools that much superior than the local football programs who are also competitive on the field? Compare Amat’s academics to the top schools in the SGV. CHARTER OAK, LOS ALTOS, SOUTH HILLS, DIAMOND RANCH, GLENDORA, etc. All have been recognized for academics. Each school offers college prep courses and AP courses necessary to go to college. All are competitive on the field. All are free. So your hope is that your son will get recognized by a recruiter? In the LAST 5 YEARS, how many scholarships has Bishop Amat and Damien produced and to what schools? Compare this to the public schools listed above. You will find that these schools mentioned above are sending out as many, and more in some years, players out on scholarships than the private schools. (We want recent history Amat lovers. Our children did not play 10, 15, 20 years ago) Certain high schools might get skipped over by college recruiters, but not CO, LA, SH, DR, Glendora and others. The same recruiter who stops by Damien visits Bonita, Diamond Ranch and Glendora. If they stop by Amat, they will swing by Los Altos. If a parent wants their child to get national recognition, they do not need to spend thousands of dollars a semester. Anyone can register on line for the Sparq camps, college camps, etc. for cheap. They can also spend a one time fee and have private companies actively pursue colleges for scholarships. The schools mentioned above all play enough quality opponents for recruiters to visit their campus. If you really care about the education and scholarship opportunities for your child do the following; Compare the academics of each institution (ask for API and AYP scores, ask how many AP courses the school offers, ask what percent of students are accepted to college after graduation, and the list of colleges the graduates attend), ask how many scholarships has the football (you may plug in the sport of your choice) program put out in the last 5 years and to what schools, and finally, how much is tuition? You will find that there is no longer a reason to pay thousands of dollars for a high school education. Your child has a better chance of winning a CIF title by attending CHARTER OAK, SOUTH HILLS, or DIAMOND RANCH next year than he does attending Amat or Damien. Your child is just as likely to receive a scholarship from these schools as well. After you finish the research go find your local payphone and call Bishop Amat.
I saw Northview play over the summer and they got a lefty that I believe is a sophomore who can throw. What is his name? That is a staff.
I like
Northview, Amat, and C. Oak in my top 3 also.
I like Bonita and city rival San Dimas to be good also.
South Hills has a good one in De La Fuente, along with Nogales and Melcher.
Should be fun to see it all unfold.
1. Northview- The Vikings will win the CIF crown this season. #1-9 are all tough outs. Pitchers will be Macias (from Cantwell), Andrade, and Elias. Infield will be Elias, Orona (yes he's back), Pedroza, and Arnold. Outfield willbe Jones, Ramirez, and possible Arnold. Catchers will be williams and Juarez. They both do a great job calling games. Let's hope murph keeps the boys grounded and doesn't let them read all their press clippings.
2. Amat- Fox, Mistone, and Reyes will provide great leadership. Zuniga, Alcantara, and Icky should do well under the guidance of Beck (look what he did for Eusebio)
3. Charter Oak- Garkow and Company all return. JC torres and Winkler are solid up the middle. Tiffany comes from great bloodlines. Coach Quinley does a great job with these boys. He also does a great job cutting the grass.
4. San Dimas- Leyland is an absolute beast. his little brother is also turing into a darn good baseball player. Ponzo will give you everything he has on the field.
5. Gabrielino- Cabral is solid on the mound. Hovermale is a decent #2. Izumida hit over 400. The Eagles will surprise a few teams along the way.
6. Bonita- RJ Arnold still haunts this team, but Mier will bounce back and lead the Bearcats this season. Calderaro will be the #2 coming into the season. Gelalich is a hard working kid.
7. South Hills- De La Fuente should win everytime he takes the mound. Ibarra is probably the best Sophomore in the valley. Porro doesn't look the part but he usually delivers in the clutch. Smitty will find a way to screw this up.
8. Nogales- Melchor like De La Fuente gives the Nobles a chance to win everytime he takes the mound. Other than him the cupboard is bare but Romano always does a great job of preparing his team.
9. Glendora- They should be higher but like Smitty, Henley will find a way to screw this up. Regis is solid on defense and just as tough with his bat. Janclaes is an underated pitcher who will surprise people this year. Woodward reminds me of Pedroza. They are both nails for little guys.
10. Covina- You can't have this team off your top ten when Pill is on the team. He is a threat both on the mound and at bat. He will win a few games single handedly.
Don't count out West Covina. The Bulldogs will beat a few teams along the way.
The top three are interchangeable.
#1 Northview. The infield is all back and catchers are both back and 2 of 3 outfielders back...and now to their biggest strength- Pitching. Great depth on this staff. Was this the best team in Div. 4 last year at playoff time? We'll never know will we?
2. Charter Oak. TQ got a lot out of this bunch last year and most are back, so it should be interesting. Kinda got the feeling that team caught lightning in a bottle last year at the right time. Is that bottle still around?
3. Amat. Who did they bring in to replace Maverick and Eusebio? They have guys, but who they brought in will say a lot.
4. San Dimas. Ponzo and Leyland are big players and should have them in the hunch.
5. Bonita. Football looking team physically. Gio will be tough on the hill, who becomes their #2 will go long way on how well they do.
6. Nogales. When you got a legit #1, you are in the hunt in every big game and SH should be beatable this year.
7. Diamond Bar. Don't know much, but usually put guys on nthe field that can play.
8. Glendora. Word is that the coach likes this group and they do have talented young players.
9. Covina. Does Pill put up big #'s again and does the supporting cast show up?
10. South Hills. You know they got the talent, no down cycles at this place. Can they get past first round speedbump?
