meseropian would be a great player if he wasnt such a lazy ass. he never sprints up the court, on defense or offence. he can shoot and penetrate but he doesnt make the players around him any better. Charter Oak has two good shooters on their team besides joey, but once meseropian gets the ball he rarely gives it up regardless of how open someone is. thats partially why they lost the Bonita yesterday. bonita shared the ball well and penentrated and kicked. bonita didnt shoot very well but they made up for that with stifiling d in the fourth. and the play made by troy prather at the end of the third was amazing. saved the game

Calvary Baptist?

CALVARY BAPTIST?

Calvary Baptist has 40 kids in the HS!!!!!

They had a girl on the Baseball team last year for heavens sake.

Some of you guys are running a little light on sniveling material.

That's right La Verne, Calvary Baptist is yours too. I was looking at Calpreps rankings the other day for Southern Section and was curious who was at the bottom...Low & behold it was La Verne's C. Baptist with a -55 score! Ouch. Just checked for the whole state and they are not last there at least. They are ahead of ONE other team.

Is Jordan Salley another victim of the "Amat crisis"??? that why he left???

Ranchrowdy,

1/2 right - but a bit of a trick question!

In 2006 DR won DIIIAA by beating Magnolia on March 3, while the next day - March 4th, amat defeated Alemany for their 3rd consecutive CIF title. So, technically, Coach Wiard's girls were the last team to win a title - by one day : )

As for the boys... yeah you could have guessed - the amat boys were also the last SGV school to win a CIF Championship when Coach Lokar's boys won their title in 2002.

...and La Verne - you claim Calvary Baptist HS as your own too, yes?
But 3 out of 4 is still darn good!

Joe Amat,
This may be way after the fact but I can say that the most recent sgv girls basketball team to win a CIF championship was Diamond Ranch in 2006. We had Nina Earl, Eliza Dy, Erika Greer, Diana Ortiz, and a host of other girls.
Bookending that championship are two Semi-Final game losses but I think that is the most recent CIF championship for any team in the sgv, boys and girls combined.

Way to go City of La Verne!! With only 3 High Schools in this city, and all three are in the SGV top 5, I would say that's a great accomplishment....

sgvpride,
Thats great news I hope your right.

Chris,
For the sake of the kids, I won't bring up any name, but he is a key player, and if sgvpride is right [I hope so], it doesn't look to be an issue anymore.

so who is in the running for player of the year?

This is a HUGE week in Tartan land. They finish league @ Ayala Tues. and Home vs. Damien (what a game that should be!). Sitting where few if any thought they would be, tied for first with CH and looking at no worse than a tie for second, this is gut-check time. Don't settle for coasting into the playoffs boys. Grab a share of that title that you deserve. Do what your football team did and finish the job! It starts tomorrow night at Ayala who, by knocking off Damien, hopes to move up into a tie with you for second. They will be gunning for you BIG time. Don't let them have it. Put them in the 3rd spot for good.

For the Bonita fans I will say that they are playing very well this year. With good, but not great talent, they and their coach are getting every ounce of ability out of themselves. I wish we'd have played each other this year, it would be a great game. I'm not sure they end up #1 in the SGV, but they deserve to be there at this moment.

Regarding Salley, what does CIF constitute as an acceptable "hardship". Just curious. I was surprised to see he could play right away. He's a good young player who has a chance to be one of the best in the area in a year or two. I wonder how much better the Tartans would be if he had stayed in the Glendora school system. Oh well, we've gained a few in the past and we've lost a few. I like this team and this coaching staff has done a wonderful job of getting much of their ability out of them as well. Few teams have improved as much from the start of the season to now.

Mesropian is a very good player. He is a tough guard, but I am just saying lets get real with those stats. I think Charter Oak will be ranked this week after beating Los Altos again, just don't throw out absurd stats. By the way I'm not a Glendora fan but Cortes is the best player in the valley, I have seen both play and Dominic is definetely better.

hey Dan which player are you talking about?

DAN

i believe that player is ok. i am wondering if you are referring to the same player im thinking of? but from waht i know all the players are ok

west covina= first round exit

Sorry Tart Mom but I don't think West Covina's win over Glendora was a fluke, they just beat Nogales last night 59 to 57. So in their last three games they've taken out two SGV #2 ranked teams and had a blowouit win over Charter Oak in between. Not saying the Bulldogs are a better team than either Glendora or Nogales, but I am saying that at this point of the season they are proving to be in the same caliber as those teams and your comment that Glendora would beat us 9 out of 10 is crazy. The Bulldogs are jelling at this time and are looking to be among the SGV elite, certainly a top 5 team. Fred should give them the respect they deserve, with a better ranking than he has them at.
The bad news for the Bulldogs is that just as they are playing their best ball,
I've heard that they are about to lose one of their best players for the rest of the season, with the playoffs right around the corner this certainly hurts.

HEy u shouldnt talk cuzz he is the
best player in the vallay and watch out
for next years team becuzz they are going to be good and we should be ranked we beat nogales
and los altos twice and rowland and only lost to Bonita by 4 so yes we should be ranked ahead of los altos so watch for charter oak as a sleeper in the palayoffs

The reason Charter Oak isn't ranked is because they are 11-13. They are a good 11-13 team if there is such a thing, but regardless they are 11-13. Mesropian does not average 26 point, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists unless his mom and dad are the ones keeping the stats.

Hold on the valleys best is JOEY MESOROPIAN
FROM CHARTER OAK HIGH WE GET NO PROPS FOR ANYTHING WE NOCKED OFF NOGALES AND LOS ALTOS AND WE ARE STILL NOT RANKED WAT THE HECK THATS CRAZY JOEY MESOROPIAN PLAYED TONIGT WITH A DISLOCATED SHOULDER AND WE STILL BEAT LOS ALTOS BY 20 SO THANK YOU JOEY MESOROPIAN 6'6 AVG 26PTS AND 10RBD THANK YOU AND 7 DIMES

Chris are you serious, or joking about West Co & Nogales, what was the score?

WEST COVINA BEAT NOGALES TONIGHT =(

What SGV school has the most recent CIF Basketball Championship?
Boys=

Thats the problem with you Bonita backers and most here in the SGV. You are happy with a good record and league title yet the true measure of a successfull team is CIF titles. Until you win this you are all blowing hot air.

Jordan was granted his Hardship by the CIF on Monday, so he had unrestricted eligibility beginning then.

My original comments about BONITA have been backed up beautifully by BoHiFan on this board. "Overrated" you acknowledge that BONITA is a playoff team most every year, yet you fail to recognize that a small school like BONITA is playing "up". That has to matter here. Coach Eckler, year & year out, seems to be getting a lot of Miramonte Leage championships. He deserves the credit, along with his players, because they would be the same ones bashed here & elsewhere if they were always losing. If they only played schools their size, they would likely post even more impressive numbers. BONITA, Eckler, his system & the players win, make the playoffs and represent EVERY year. So, don't hate, dude; appreciate.

They will have trouble in the playoffs because of the division they are in. That is why they lost last year in the first round after they were moved up. For their school size they are a phenomenal team. All of your points you made to show they were overrated had no backing. Everyone knows they will have trouble in CIF because they are in too high of a division. Nobody has said Bonita is unbelievable and unstoppable you just overreacted to them being rated # 1

How is Jordan Salley eligible to play

My point is they are overrated. Mark my words they will be going down in the playoffs. Now get to school young man.

BonitaIsOverRated,
Quarter finals and semi finals is not the first or second round. So last year was the only year they lost in the first or second round. Yes most the valley isn't very good but the teams I mentioned are good teams that Bonita has beat. I don't know where you are going with this. I think you probably didn't know who Bonita had played before you made your original post

You just proved my point. 2 of the last 3 years lost in the 1st or 2nd round. The only quality win is the Corona Centennial win. Most the valley isnt very good. They are having a good year record wise but again they will fall in the 1st or 2nd round again this year just like they do every year.

BonitaIsOverRated,
Wow buddy not much intelligence to that post. "The only solid teams they played beat them"
Bonita beat:
Corona Centennial # 21 in the state (Maxpreps)
Los Osos
Damien Top ten in valley
Diamond Ranch (twice) Top ten in valley
Los Altos Top ten in valley

When they lost to Rancho Cucamonga
Zylstra, Miller, Prather didn't play, three starters. They only lost by three. They lost to Chino Hills and Damien, no shame in that they are two solid teams. They had already beat Damien once and anyone will tell you it is tough to beat a good team twice in one year.

"They will lose in the first or second round like they do every year."
05- semis lost to Artesia by 4
06- lost in the quarter to La Canada by 5
07- got moved up divisions to play against schools with 3000-4000 kids, Bonita has 1700 and yes they lost in the first round to Redlands East Valley.
No one is saying Bonita is the greatest team in the history of the San Gabriel vally and they will have a tough time in CIF because they play in a division I have no idea why they are in because the rest of the schools are huge. However, they are having a very good year and they have beat several good teams this year.

bonita is there by default.the only solid teams they played beat them. They will lose in the 1st or 2nd round again like every year. That last rant must be from a student.

On this board, while the #3 team debates the #9 team in this week's listings, I'd like to point out the solid basketball being played by BONITA. I know some, perhaps most, of the other teams (and our friend Fred who runs this blog - "...too small..." I believe he said) never gave them much of a chance this season. All they have done is beat Corona Centennial, and Diamond Ranch twice among their 20 wins. Yes, there are those loses to Damien and Chino Hills, both solid teams. But BONITA was "in" both of those games until the end. Perhaps one day, Greg Eckler will begin to get some credit for being an outstanding basketball coach who has a clear track record of winning basketball. With all due respect to the other good teams, BONITA & Eckler's system are on top of this list today. Congrats to the players, especially Abernathy, Becker, Miller, Schmidt, Prather, Zylstra, "Tambo" and the rest of the Bearcats.

Glendora's loss to CH was predictable. Just as the Tartans played and shot well @ CH 3 weeks ago and CH did not, the reverse happaned last night. Harkey was a beast and the others spinkled a few 3's while Tiger didn't have one of his better games and the other guys didn't shoot as well as they have in other games. Therefore...a Tartan loss. CH is probably the more talented team, but Glendora has played better (until the last couple of games). We'll see how they respond the rest of the way. A Co-league championship would still be a huge accomplishment for this team and staff. Was hoping to see 20+ wins this year and that's still very doable.

This is an Outrage!

What about the Rosemead Panthers Boys Team or Duarte?

Andrew, around these parts, "The Valley" has always been condsidered the East Valley, especially when it pertains to the Tribune area...Coaches in this area who have been around since the 1970s still refer to the all-area team as the "All-Valley team."

C'mon Steve,

Bishop Amat -

"Still the Valley's Best?"

You mean East San Gabriel Valley's best, right? Can't forget those Mustangs over at Muir.

Tartan Fan,

Forget West Covina fan, as even though Rowland beat them twice they still are complaining about the refs in both games. Must be a vast conspiracy against them.

And the Nogales-Glendora game where Casey scored close to 50 (I don't think it was 50 exactly) was an early round playoff game, not a championship. It's where I first heard a small group of Noble fans unleash the cheer "Bang Bang. Shoot the ref."

Nogales. Representing class since 1903

coaches if u wanna beat glendora every time just go box in 1 your best defender guards cortes and thats it, oh wait didnt they lose to chino hills on wednesday, wow.

chris you went in 98? i went in 89
=]

chris THE casey jacobsen who went to stanford (with rowland's julius barnes?)

btw good job to nogales...

pity i didnt get to go see the game...

i do agree with "Jojo"
this glendora team is one of the weakest in program history. i really dont know how that team is undefeated in that competitive league. its very simple shut down tiger and make all the other guys have career games and you are going to win. why doesnt everyone else see that? the game at APU proves it.

glendora lost! baaa haaa

good game by the Lady Lancers on Saturday over Walnut. Tonight the Lady Mustang took it to SH. SH boys took it to Walnut Boys by 1. The big win goes to Walnut girls water polo team now 24 & o. With a win over Bonita. 10-8

GLENDORA!!! Thats who ruined it for nogales when i went to nogales in 98 i believe.

Casey Jacobsen scored 50 pts vs Nogales in the championship game.

Nogales is sick! I'd like to see a game with them and Glendora.

NOGALES Takes the San Antonio League with a 73-55 victory tonight over Rowland

B&G LANCER GIRLS ,
His reply is in the blog on the new addition to the state championships in football. He is still at it and now wants to take us on in waterpolo.

GHS Fan,
They drop a spot because you can't ignore the loss to West Covina, regardless of the reason. But the wins over Damien and Diamond Bar is what solidified their hold at No. 3

Jojo,

A better question is how do the Tartans drop from 2 to 3 after two VERY big league wins against Damien and Diamond Bar. Those are the games that count...like your loss the night before to a Rowland team that we easily beat earlier in the year when we weren't even playing as well. This game at APU was a bad performance by Glendora, I'll admit. And WC does get credit for playing well and playing hard. The Tartan boys were just not into it. I know a couple of the guys were sick and all, but they still have to find enough energy to win a game like that and they didn't. Part of the learning process for a less than experienced team. That said, a win over Chino Hills tonight in the biggest and most important game of the year to date, will go a LONG way to proving how far this team has come. They would be 7-0 in league and all but a major let down (see WC game @ APU) away from their first outright Sierra league championship since 1968! I think that's right according to the calander. Of course they were in the Baseline from 1981-2003 (when they last were sole league champs). Go Tartans!

The Walnut girls team got their tails handed to them by our Lady Lancers, yes Walnuts team is not ready to play Big time ball with a true State qualifier and Champion. Najera is a good player but Amat shut her down and most her points came in gabage time. Some Fang person shot off his or her mouth and now where is the talk.? Think your football team or baseball team want to tangle with the Lancers. Think again before opening up your Toxic sprayed area mouth.

West Covina, we deserve higher ranking. your win was a fluke. we would beat you 9 out of 10. get your head out we are a better team and we were worn out that day.

JoJo,
It's all about the body of work. While Glendora was going 5-0 in the Sierra League, West Covina was in a mild slump. That allowed Glendora to move up to No. 2 and West Coivna to drop to No. 9. Now just because the No. 9 team beats the No. 2 team doesn't automatically move them into that slot. This is not a ladder tournament. It's about the body of work, and Glendora's body of work is still a little better than West Covina's.

how the hell is glendora ranked higher then west covina, west covina beat Glendora on saturday. cortes is overrated and i dont care if u play 4 games a week in tournaments they play day after day, these kids r young and they can handle playing that much. face it glendora isnt a powerhouse anymore, tribune has to stop overrating them.
