Breaking News: Bishop Amat football coach Mark Verti resigns

| | Comments (376) |

Story on Mark Verti's resignation

Good luck coach, you were always available, answered every question, and handled this story with class as usual.

On the decision
"I wish things could have been different," said Bishop Amat coach Matt Verti, who resigned on Thursday after two years, and an 8-12 overall record. "But in the end, and after months of thinking about it, I think it was the best thing to do for Bishop Amat and myself."

On the pressure at Amat
"I knew coming here there was pressure to win, and win now," Verti said. "Previous coaches had told me that, and I knew it. But it's a little different when you're actually here. We had some great victories and made some strides. But there were lots of ups and downs, and obviously some really tough weeks that build on you and your family."

On Amat's future
"Next year's team is going to be awesome," Verti said. "I felt good about leaving this program in good shape for the next coach. Sure, it's disappointing personally that I'm not coming back. I love coaching high school football and I love being here. I'm going to coach again, but the most important thing was making a decision that was in the best interest of Bishop Amat. I respect the tradition too much and will always be one of its biggest supporters."

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

This guy, "Breaking news" seems to have issues.

I want all to know that, I do necessarily advocate censoring here, but come on ! All this guy does is to continually post something negative towards Amat and to the people who post their concerns regarding the program.

Breaking News, if your going to come in a talk smack, ok, but at the very least have "a take" becasue at the very least, we can something to discuss, right ??

Please don't just, post for silly little things like this that don't have any value at all.

THIS IS HISTORY ON A KID CALLED D.J. STRAWBERRY AND HIS DID DARRYL STRAWBERRY...remember him? SHAME ON MATER DEI FOR ACCEPTING THAT KID TOO RIGHT??

At Mater Dei: Averaged 13.1 points per game and 4.4 rebounds in leading Mater Dei to a 35-2 record and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state title as a senior ... also averaged 2.3 assists per game and 2.0 steals ... garnered first team All-CIF accolades following his senior season ... merited first team All-Serra League and first team All-Orange County honors as a junior and senior ... guarded LeBron James as the Monarchs took on St. Vincent's-St. Mary's as a senior ... held James to .333 field-goal shooting, including an 0-for-8 3-point shooting performance ... also forced James into seven turnovers ... scored 12 points as a participant in Baltimore's Charm City Challenge with Terrapin teammates Hassan Fofana, Will Bowers and Ekene Ibekwe in April 2003 ... netted 13 points as he participated in the Jordan Capital Classic Blue/White game at MCI Center later that month with Bowers.

ON DAD>>>>On December 20, 1994, Strawberry and his agent were indicted for failing to report more than $300,000 of income from autograph and memorabilia shows. On April 29, 1995, Strawberry was ordered to repay $450,000 in back taxes and sentenced to six months of home confinement.
On February 13, 1995, Strawberry was suspended for 75 days by Major League Baseball after testing positive for cocaine. He was released by the San Francisco Giants on the same day.
On December 19, 1995, Strawberry was charged in California with failing to make child support payments. When he missed a June 5, 1996 deadline to pay the child support, a Los Angeles judge set a trial date of July 17, at which time Strawberry agreed to use his signing bonus to pay the debt. [2]
On August 25, 1998, Strawberry was sued by attorney Robert Shapiro for unpaid legal fees related to baseball contract negotiations in 1994. The two resolved the dispute on March 17, 1999.
[3]
On April 3, 1999, Strawberry was arrested in Tampa, Florida for soliciting sex from a police woman posing as a prostitute and for having a small amount of cocaine. On April 24, he was suspended for 140 days by Major League Baseball for the incident. On May 29, he pleaded no contest to the charges and was sentenced to 21 months probation and community service. [4]
On January 2, 2000, Strawberry tested positive for cocaine. On March 15, shortly after the test result was announced, Major League Baseball announced that he would be suspended for one year. Six days later, he was in rehab.

If the coaching position is a "done deal" as some say, then it would be obvious that there was no selection committee process. Multiple candidates could not have applied and been detailed interviews could not have been done. Remember, the opening was just posted Monday of this week and Verti just "resigned" a week ago Thursday. That is not enough time to conduct an appropriate evaluation. If this is the case, Amat will suffer more of the same soley because of the administration's shortcomings. Same story, different day!!!

I am guessing that they are staying, they have vested 3 years already at Amat and Seals is a excellent student with a 4.0 GPA..makes no sense to take them to public now just to play 10 games of football and a possible playoff round. I see them staying. The players that left last season the only real one that left that had a impact was Bryce McBride. Wells we know what happen there and Bonilla was a divorce case. The rest were non factors, altho Ryan Henson turn out to play some good football for West Covina this past year. He was kind of a loss for Amat, but when Ryan played for Amat he was not a stud player, maybe he was overlooked, Sermons he was not all that at Amat, but then again playing D1 vs D6 is a HUGE DIFFERANCE!

Third anyone who has not had their head in the nether regions of their body knows that Gano has only been teaching since 1995. They did an article about it in the Tribune. He used to paint houses!!! Ya fool. Fourth, I can only go by what someone says to my face about certain Catholic schools and the religion.

OK, it is highly unlikely that any coach from the SGV will get hired for the Amat spot.

For all of those who are speculating that someone in the program will take over is somewhat wrong. The only potential candidate fromt the current coaching staff is defensive coordinator Anselmo Zamano. You may ask why? His defense did not do that good. You must know that his defense was a part of "Verti's system". Meaning he had to run the defense that Verti told him. I do not get why you would bring in a D- Coor. and not let him do his own thing, makes no sense? He does not have head coaching experience, but was an effective D- Coor. at Kaiser HS. After suffering a career ending injury at UCLA, he spent time at as an Graduates assistant with the linebackers and as part of the recruiting staff for UCLA's football program. He would be the only potential candidate.

Parker... will not happen, he makes way too much money as a long time veteran of the LaCo sheriff, and it will not be a possibility until he retires from the police force.

Canales... Will not happen, Admin. and Manzosaw his work with the Frosh. and JV. squad, so do not worry, he will not be Amat's next head coach.

Manzo may want to bring someone from the current staff, but it is not on him. The process work somewhat like the UCLA coaching search works. Msgr. Caroll has to approve it, as does Hemmingway ( well not really, but he can give his opinion), and their decision will also be based the recommendstions of the board that they set up for the hire.

While they may have some people in mind for the vacancy, it is still open as of now. But what Jobs don't? while they may have someone in mind that does not mean that is going to happen.

Joe Amat said:

Far from it. I don't see anyone from amat put down Farrar, Bogan, or Gano for their coaching. Bogan and Gano have never stepped up to play the lancers so that comparison is irrelevant, but the fact can't be ignored. Farrar perrenially does a great job at CO in their division. The oft-used phrase on this blog "...the Farrar, Bogan, Gano era..." in the SGV originated from the amat camp. Much respect for all three of them as coaches and they would do fine in any division given the opportunity and talent. The fact that amat took it CO during the last home&home contract during average years on our part further speaks to the difference in levels of play more than anything else.

Dreamweaver said:

Maybe I'm missing something but is Amat trying to have it both ways? They put down Gano, Farrar and Bogan for either getting killed agianst former amat coaching or being afraid to play Amat...yet they want to consider Farrar, Bogan and Gano for the job? That's hilarious!

Reminds me of the father of the world's ugliest bride...no matter how much you spend on the wedding and what kind of job/future you have set up for your new son-in-law...he still has to sleep with her! lol THAT"S TOUGH!

I disagree that Farrar would be a candidate, although would do great. So your post is a little off base. but I suspect you have the wrong blogger. As you will see, the name of the poster is BELOW the post.

For example, you did NOT write:

However, if you meant to slam "Bill", that's another thing altogether.

sgvcoach said:

I am going to try to spread a little rational thought on the Farrar, Gano, Bogan rumor.

Only one of those three seems like a potential candidate. I am NOT a Farrar fan. But he is retired from teaching. He is looking to step down at Charter Oak. He would fit. But he would have to get out of the comfort zone of his little coaching family.

Gano has only been teaching since 1995. He would have to make a lot of $ to catch up with where he is at on the pay scale at LA. Probably around 75-85,000. Now I am not him so maybe I am wrong, but just thinking about his status as a teacher and retirement being proably 8-9 years away he might have a tough time swinging it.

Bogan is somewhat anti-catholic so I don't know if that would mix really well at a catholic school.
I would think you would want someone who believes in the message of the Catholic Church coaching at a Catholic school. Or at the very leat someone who doesn't care either way. But this guy has made negative comments to my face and others about the catholic schools/church. Now I am not saying he persecutes Catholics or wants to kill them or anything. I am just saying his Born again philosophy might clash at Amat.

Bill said:

to amat parent: Just because the school posts the opening doesn't mean they don't already have someone in mind. Because of all the liberal organizations out there it's politically correct to show the school is looking for a candidate even though someone has been chosen.

It reminds me of the NFL's dumb rule about having a token African American's interview for head coaching position. It's a waste of time if the team or school has someone in mind.

AMAT 73 said:

The search for a new coach this time around sounds like the way it should have been done when Difiori left the program, then Amat would not be in this mess. I will be happy for the players and their parents should Amat pull it off and bring in a instant success type coach and all players remain and do not transfer. I am unhappy that my Varsity kid and his teamates got caught in the two year plunge their junior and senior seasons. The times and era's of HS sports and our class of 2008 had to be put thru this and go down as one of the worse in Amat football history. I will always resent the way that two years was handled seeing how we had the talent but went with a bonehead idea in hiring a inexperienced coach instead of a mature coach. it is what it is and I will continue to support Amat but to think how our class of 2008 got the shaft is frustrating now that they opened up their eyes and are now going after a experienced coach.

FredJ said:

Please, do not post racist comments

Joe Amat said:

The assistant coaches unrest is natural, given that the new coach will come from outside the present staff. the uncertainty comes when an experienced and proven coach enters the picture, that coach also has "his guys" from previous coaching stints. Depending on how any present coaches fit into the empty pieces of the puzzle will determine who sticks around.

And certainly because there is an "announcement" calling for resumes does not mean that the process is *wide-open*. It is merely trolling for that diamond that might be out there (as they were last time) and interested. But if that applicant does not bring Head Coaching experience, a prior CIF Championship(s), and past ties to amat, or at least the willingness to embrace the history (like Thomas did as an "outside" at Servite) - they don't have much of a chance to beat out the top two candidates.

AMAT 73 said:

jcaz,
Here we go with the speculation. Why don't you just let the process of getting a new coach happen . Inside info or not nobody but Mnsgr knows what's going to happen. You say if the choice is from within or Daylon we are instore for more bad times. This is part of the problem that is making us look bad to outside eyes. Already knocking a new coach who is not even named. Whoever it turns out to be just stand behind the choice and give them the support respect due which will be a starting block to regaining some respect to our program.

Blue said:

Here is my insight with someone in the hiring process. It is a older coach thats has been successful coaching in one of our SGV public schools. It is not Parker of For God's sake Canales. that will not happen. Yes the other parts of Verti's staff are worried that they are out of jobs, they are! after two years it did not work they will not be retained, maybe sent down if they want that but will not have a hand in the Varsity. New coach will clean house maybe keep Daylon Mc. and bring in Rix but it will be a new staff. Also the rumblings amongst the players is if the job is handed to McCutchen they do not like it because they will be in the same boat without a experienced HS football coach. Great player does not equal good coach, unless Daylon can surround himself with some quality coaches. I doubt it. players will leave if the right coach is not selected this time. Existing junior parents will not let their kids senior season go down hill like the last two years they will move them Lenhart, McClannahan,Seals, Prieto,Johnson, . It has not been leaked but CO's Farr and Los Altos Gano or So Hills Bogan may be the next Bishop Amat coach. Older guy that has been successful in the neighboring SGV schools? Sounds like one of them is getting the job.

He has ZERO leadership skills and is Manzo's puppet. He along with LUGO need to hit the road... None of this Cantwell attitudes. Who/What the hell has Cantwell ever done, no need to have people like them in the program.

Bishop Amat High School invites applications for the position of Head Football Coach.

Bishop Amat is a Catholic co-educational institution of 1,500 students, located in La Puente, California and participates in Division I Football as a member of the Serra League.

The Head Football Coach is responsible for leading all facets of a Division I program. Of particular importance are the proven ability to communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, staff, faculty, alumni, administrators, and media; the proven ability to organize and implement a successful and competitive football program; the proven ability to inspire achievement and leadership among student-athletes and staff; and a commitment to adhere to the regulations, philosophies, and educational mission of Bishop Amat, the Serra League, and the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF-SS).

A bachelors degree is required (masters preferred or teaching credential) with successful coaching experience. Teaching as a member of the faculty is expected. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Send cover letter, resume, to: Department of Athletics, Attention: Mr. Mike Manzo, Bishop Amat High School, 14301 Fairgrove Ave, La Puente, California.

Notes on Amat

Just got some inside info....from a friend.
It seems as if the powers that be, have already decided on who the next coach is going to be, but according to my source, they are not yet announcing who that is as of yet.

It is of interst to note that the person who gave me this insight said that this comes from a person very very close to the program.

From what I am gathering, and im just putting 2 and 2 together here after speaking to my friend, that there seems to be little worry on the curent staff about having to find other places to work.

If that is true, then I can see that this means that they are going to most likely hire a guy from the current staff and keep most, if not all of the present coaches on the team.

I hope that this is not true because now would be an excellent chance to clean house and give the new guy an opportunity to bring in some real good talent without any of the baggage that Verti had.

If they elevate a current coach, then all we are going to get is the same thing all over again. No one on that staff, in my opinion, including McCutchen, has the experience to run this program at this, the Pac5, level. They need a proven coach from the outside who can turn this thing around fast. I just hope that my source is wrong.

Just posted on the AMAT website is a call for applicants for the vacant Head Coaching position. As far as Coach Verti , he is gone and respect what he chose to do in leaving the position. There is no reason to keep hashing over and over his faults or short comings. Let's hope the next coach gets a fair shake and some backing in what direction he chooses to take the program. Question for a few. What does a search for a new coach have to do with La Puente being such a horrible town and the rascist comments directed towards those who attend AMAT.If your hate for AMAT is that bad you should spend a little of your money and seek some professional help because bashing us is not helping you one bit. It's a sign of bad parenting.

They transferred out of Amat to attend Los Altos with a declining API of 734. Charter Oak 702. South Hills 743. West Covina 729.
By the end of the year all schools need to be at 800. I don't see these schools getting there.

Quit looking at only sports people. Your child's future beyond high school is at stake.

Exactly Seriously, Amat has nowhere near the talent because it left or didn't enroll due to Verti and staff. Question: Don't the players know if the coaching is good or not? Answer: Yes they do. Shouldn't a program such as Amat have a legitimate weight program? They didn't these last few seasons, but they have the facilities. Why is that. Who was busting their butt in that area. I base his ability and the ability of the staff by the W-L the record. 8-12 is not the sign of a good coach or staff. Significant numbers and significant players leaving the program because of coaching is not a sign of a good coach either. Consistantly not returning the calls of various college recruiters(deliberately or not)is not a sign of a good coach. Not keeping up on and enforcing academic standards of your players is not the sign of a good coach(I do give Daylon and Devera credit for demanding excellence from their position players and it showed). Academics is supposed to be first right?

Bottom line, if a player is not performing, you bench him. If a coach is not performing you pull him. It happens at every level of sports. Amat is D1 football, as all love to boast. Verti just is not a D1 coach. Sorry :(

LOVING YOURSELF said:

Verti had no pressure from the AD or Administration to resign. He did it on his own merit for the love of his players and the school. Another fact you jacked up.

All of you dont know crap about football. You have no real clue to what is going on. Verti had some great asst coaches and some others were ok. But you big idiots are going by name, instead of production. Some of you are that blind to see that AMAT is no where near the talent it had in years. But you give the Coaches crap for not developing. You talk smack as if you know how hard they worked. You type all this crap as if you know anything, when the exact oppostite is true. You know squat! Type all your mess, all your crap cause its b.s. and that's all it is. You attack everybody but you have no idea what they are all about. Verti and his coaches deserve better than the b.s. you give them. You are divided school that will never be happy. You base Coaches on where they played. Charlie Weis tell me where he played. Trestman Oakland's old OC where did he play? What about the old Amat Coaches tell me where did they play. You fools, you attack a young man who just resigned for the school and his players not to suffer cause of people like you. As a Valley fan I have lost respect not for the Coaches but for the supporters of the program. You taught your kids nothing about dignity and respect. Instead you taught them about whining and complaining if they dont get what they want, instead of getting what they earned. Leave those Coaches alone. Many of them are smarter than you think, but I forgot you guys are too dumb to realize that.

LUVTHISGAME said:

Verti resigned because it was a choice of resigning or being fired, which is really no choice at all. He didn't step down because it was the right thing, it was the only thing he could do.

Think about it people. This was in the works before and during the holiday vacation. School just resumed this week and they already have viable candidates lined up.

A good coach surrounds himself with good assistants. Verti never did that. Daylon was forced on him. At season's end, Daylon stated he would not come back if Verti and crew remained. Thats was the final nail in the coffin.

Vic Cuccia RIP said:

Vic Cuccia, known for his innovative passing schemes, showmanship and success in building Los Angeles Wilson into a football powerhouse in the 1970s, has died. He was 80.

He guided Wilson to a 39-game winning streak, during which the Mules won City Section 3-A championships in 1975, '76 and '77, led by his son, Ron, a quarterback who set a national record for total offense.

The Mules were 151-42-6 during Cuccia's 22-year coaching career from 1956 through 1977. He taught for 44 years at Wilson, and the school named its football stadium in his honor in 1999.

During the 1970s, Wilson's football team drew standing-room only home crowds as its wide-open offense, featuring four wide receivers, rolled up points and victories.

"It was the greatest show in town," said Eddie Martinez, Wilson's current football coach who was a standout receiver in 1977 for Cuccia.

Cuccia helped his players gain recognition by his team setting offensive records, scoring points in bunches and having them change uniforms at halftime in a showmanship maneuver.

Cuccia received criticism in 1977 when his team opened a 63-0 halftime lead against Los Angeles Lincoln. The opposing team refused to play the rest of the game and ended up forfeiting.

Born Oct. 9, 1927, in Los Angeles, Cuccia grew up in El Sereno. He played on Wilson's first league championship team in 1944.

He was a center on the St. Mary's College football team that lost to Oklahoma A&M in the 1946 Sugar Bowl. He transferred to Occidental College and played in the 1949 Raisin Bowl, a 21-20 upset victory over Colorado A&M.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his discharge, he returned to the area to coach youth football and became a teacher and coach at Wilson.

Among his players was Steve Clarkson, who has become one of the top quarterback teachers in the Southland.

"A lot of the stuff I teach today is really because of him," Clarkson said. "He was before his time. He put all his trust in his quarterbacks. He was a legend and still is."

Cuccia's son, Ron, set a City Section and state record for career passing with 8,804 yards and accounted for 145 touchdowns. He set a national record for career total offense with 11,451 yards and went on to play at Harvard.

Cuccia, a long-time resident of Alhambra, died Friday at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena after a long illness.

Asked what he learned from Cuccia, Martinez said, "He gave us the attitude, 'Don't let anybody tell you that you can't do stuff.' He was great at that underdog mentality. It really put a chip on everybody's shoulders, and not just the team but the community."

Cuccia is survived by his wife, Delores, son Ron, daughter Kathleen and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Wilson football booster club, 2201 Charnwood Ave., Alhambra, CA 91803

While I am on the subject of the context of this blog: I think it is utterly ridiculous that the people of Amat can’t stand together and unite! Instead we are all bashing each other and NOT acting like the Amat family we should be. What happened to that spirit that Amat used to have? I believe that Amat has lost that… WE NEED IT BACK! I believe that if Amat wants to be a power house again we need to all get off this crazy computer blog and go cheer on our lancers instead of bashing them. Yes, this is coming from someone that said something very inappropriate. It is not coach Lokar’s fault but I did have a different attitude about him as a coach all through high school. I got sucked in to the ugliness of this blog and I am embarrassed for myself. I believe that Amat can get the FAMILY back to how it used to be but not with its family members bashing each other. Again, I apologize for my moment of weakness and thankfully church came the next day for me to realize that this is all a mistake and if I could take it back I would but I can’t. Any player that was coached by Verti and his staff will tell you that he was not respected and was not a good coach. He never evaluated the talent he had and thats why talent left. He played favorites from day one and that is why the team struggled.

It has been well documented on the blog about the favortism at the QB spot the last 2 seasons and that was with a different stable of QBs each season. The only constant was Verti.

Marcus Wagner didnt touch the ball on offense until Bryce McBride left and he made an immediate impact. Wagner and McBride were in the backfield together early in their Amat careers and were a handfull. Verti never used that to his advantage.

So please, stop giving this man more credit than he is due.

Wow... this has gotten pretty hostile since the I last checked this when the story broke.

I can tell you that Verti was put in a very difficult situation. Not only on the field, but off the field. It is hard when your family has to hear it from fans in the stands that your husband,brother,son... ect sucks, is a... well you get the idea, and they had to hear it week in and week out. He handled it with class and never once complained about it. It took some one very strong to have handled it the way he did. This was very difficult for him, you could see it in his eyes as he was telling the team that he would not be returning. You saw how passionate he was about this job. It is hard to step down from your dream job, and realize that it is the end for you there. I applaude him for that.
To the coaching vacancy, It hasn't been filled yet. It is doubtful that someone within the coaching staff will take the position. It is also doubtful that anyone in the valley will likely get the position. The boosters as well as parents want a big name coach. Some one with Pac-5 coaching experience preferably. If not some one with coaching experience at a big name school. (So. Cal big name). They also want some one with Head Coaching experience if possible. The question is not if they can afford it, but if Msgr. Carrol will approve the decision? He is like Frank Mc Court(Dodgers Owner). It doesn't matter if there is a good team or not he knows the fans will come, or so he thought. Hopefully, he is beginning to realize that you need to win to get the fans to come back, and to get more money from the boosters and the alumni. If he thinks about it, A High Profile Coach that can win = More talent = More wins = More Fans = More Money = Msgr. very very Happy.
As to the rumors... Agguire... I think it would be great, but again it comes down to $$$. I doubt that Dave Money ( O-Coor. Qb's. coach) form Mater Dei is still interested in the job (He is probabaly interested but since he got passeed over the last time who knows..? Some of his things on his resume are (Only lost once to Amat in his 17 years as MDHS o-coordinator. Produced Qb's Matt Lienart, Colt Brennan, and this yrs. HS Gatorade player of the year Matt Barkley). but again who knows? Dean Harrington is now the Head Coach at Alemany, probably no longer interested.

As to Daylon... Probabaly not. No Head Coaching experience, and has only 1 year as an assistant. Yes he has ties to college's all around, will bring in the local talent and money should not be an issue for him, but as I saw on previous post Good Player does not always = Good coach ( see Isiaha Thomas). Talent is not an issue at Amat, the problem is the system, and getting the players to buy in to it. Also the development of talent, and that is usually on the position coaches and the off season program. Off- season program before this past year was more of a Do- it- Yourself type of thing until about March or April when it was mandatory. This pat year was well directed, organized, and it started in January. If you bring a big name coach such as Agguire or Money the also have the ties to D-1 schools. And big name usually means the local talent will likely follow. I don't see Daylon being hired or even staying. It seems as if he will be joining his buddy, Layton over at DRanch.

As to whoever said the St. Paul D-Coordinator, highly doubt it. He has done good the past two years, yet, has failed to beat Amat, and some still think he is a bit unproven.

Well that is about all I have to say on this issue, but I know I'll bee responding to other post later, so see ya'll in a while.

And just for the record LPHS and Los Altos have the same resources. LPHS is actually going through some renovations. What LP is lacking is the backing of the district and parent involvment. The Truth said:

Bishop Amat is like a payphone, it is no longer needed. Yes back in the days our parents sent us to Amat in hopes that they would provide a better education than the public school system. Many of us were not Catholics (forgive me Father). And, our dads sent us more talented athletes to Amat in hopes that we would get recognized by some college or pro recruit. We were very competitive, ranked in the state in most sports and at one time had a nationally ranked football team. Just like Army and Navy who use to have nationally ranked football teams in college and were able to produce great teams on the field, times have changed. In the 1940’s you could get a free education and play football for the Army powerhouse. You would graduate an officer and were pretty much assured a good quality life. The NFL was young and did not pay very much. But with the expansion of the NFL and the salaries that players began to make, serving in the military after college just wasn’t as intriguing as going to college and playing with the chance to go pro. My family is full of people who serve and has served proudly, so I am not putting down the Armed Forces, but simply making a point. How come high school players are more interested in playing for a USC, LSU, Florida, etc., than the army? The answer is simple. The payoff! What is the payoff for playing at Amat? Oh we know what you have to pay, but why? What purpose do Amat and Damien have in society today? Is the education at these two schools that much superior than the local football programs who are also competitive on the field? Compare Amat’s academics to the top schools in the SGV. CHARTER OAK, LOS ALTOS, SOUTH HILLS, DIAMOND RANCH, GLENDORA, etc. All have been recognized for academics. Each school offers college prep courses and AP courses necessary to go to college. All are competitive on the field. All are free. So your hope is that your son will get recognized by a recruiter? In the LAST 5 YEARS, how many scholarships has Bishop Amat and Damien produced and to what schools? Compare this to the public schools listed above. You will find that these schools mentioned above are sending out as many, and more in some years, players out on scholarships than the private schools. (We want recent history Amat lovers. Our children did not play 10, 15, 20 years ago) Certain high schools might get skipped over by college recruiters, but not CO, LA, SH, DR, Glendora and others. The same recruiter who stops by Damien visits Bonita, Diamond Ranch and Glendora. If they stop by Amat, they will swing by Los Altos. If a parent wants their child to get national recognition, they do not need to spend thousands of dollars a semester. Anyone can register on line for the Sparq camps, college camps, etc. for cheap. They can also spend a one time fee and have private companies actively pursue colleges for scholarships. The schools mentioned above all play enough quality opponents for recruiters to visit their campus. If you really care about the education and scholarship opportunities for your child do the following; Compare the academics of each institution (ask for API and AYP scores, ask how many AP courses the school offers, ask what percent of students are accepted to college after graduation, and the list of colleges the graduates attend), ask how many scholarships has the football (you may plug in the sport of your choice) program put out in the last 5 years and to what schools, and finally, how much is tuition? You will find that there is no longer a reason to pay thousands of dollars for a high school education. Your child has a better chance of winning a CIF title by attending CHARTER OAK, SOUTH HILLS, or DIAMOND RANCH next year than he does attending Amat or Damien. Your child is just as likely to receive a scholarship from these schools as well. After you finish the research go find your local payphone and call Bishop Amat.

questioning,

I understand your comment and concerns. My point at the time was "coaching matters". While Nieto may be all of those things that you say, he is an accomplished baseball man. I honestly don't know him personally to judge outside of that. On the surface, he seems like a nice enough guy to me, but I've heard stories, and after a year we'll see how things go this time around. Believe it or not to other bloggers I really wont write anything that I'm not pretty certain of. However he is an "outsider", although that is not always bad.

I do agree that Nieto in the same sentence with the others is like that Sesame Street skit, "One of these things is not like the others...one of these things just doesn't belong".
Salter, Kendrena, Wiard and Lokar probably represent over 100 years of "tradition and loyalty" PLUS legendary coaching prowess. That combination should have been obvious to MSGr who should have done all that he could to keep them in charge of their respective sports. We did have some off-field problems during Kendrenas later years so some have an issue with that. The other three have proven to literally be at the top of their field - and we let 2 of them go.

Salter is a top football coach in the CIF, comes from a football family and regularly challenges for championships at Culver City. A school that was abysmal before his arrival. Lokar is one of the most respected coaches in the *country* and travels the nation speaking for Stanford's Positive Coaching Alliance. We lost him too.

We've got to find great coaches....and keep them!

Joe Amat, generally your comments seem to be fairly accurate

However one of your recent postings included the name “Nieto” in the same sentence as “Salter, Kendrena, Wiard, and Lokar.”

Maybe you don’t have your facts right after all

The names Salter, Kendrena, Wiard and Lokar

-Combined - represent at least 60 years of Amat tradition and loyalty

They represent Amat families

You should recognize those names as fellow Amat alumni

You should know that those names represent honesty integrity and scruples.

You should know what the rest of we concerned alumni know

He has no integrity

I hope its a done deal because the longer Amat waits the longer the program suffers just like two years ago when Amat waited into April to finally make a decision. Just like another blogger mentioned, we had a strong group of players the last two years and nothing was done to develop them.

The players are the ones who suffer. Just like "leatherneck" wrote the off season is vital to the success of the program. So for it's been a joke and it continues to prevent the players from further development. I think everyone knows that our players hardly develop into their full potential after their freshman year. Most of the Amat players/parents seek out their own help for self improvement.

If Aguirre is not the done deal then hire Daylon McCutcheon asap for several reasons:

1. He will be smart enough to bring college and NFL experience coaches to guide him.
2. He understands the importants of off season training.
3. He knows how to communicate with the players and "PARENTs". He did it all season.
4. He has connections with College scouts at all levels D1, D2, & D3. He played with former players who are assistant coaches at D1 schools.
5. He's from this community and he has old friends who's kids are now playing in all of the youth leagues in the area (pop warner, Jr. All-American).
6. He's not worried about how much money the job pays.
7. and he's proud of the fact that he played ball at Amat and he wants to restore the tradition. The alums can't complain about that.
8. Majority of the core group of players (JR's) have been coached by Daylon.
9. Daylon has already established a relation with the teachers in an effort to improve the players academics performances the way Coach Pace use to check on the players.

But of course it makes to much sense to hire Daylon!!!

I hope John Aguirre is a good choice. Next years senior class is the last group of talented kids who was suppose to restore the program.

I believe a major part of the problem is that once football season is over, the football program basically languishes. Schools like Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, Notre Dame, etc. understand that in order to become a great program, you have to build year round. If your coach leaves, what will your opinion be about him. I think SH, CO and LA survives if their coaches leave. But DRanch? Your coach leaves, the program is in shambles again. One season won't turn it around.

Agguirre is the Choice. He won at Garfield. He won at Carson. He will definitely win at AMAT.

No Blame Here said:

First of all Amat not winning at football is not Manzo's fault. Just like it wasn't Guerrero's fault when Dorrell couldn't win. He can only give Verti the keys to the car. He can't drive it for him. Two seasons ago when Verti took over the program the players were in place for him to succeed. Amat had Dorian Wells, Marcus Wagner, Dominique Gaisie, Kevin Bonilla, Carlton Fletcher, Bryce McBride, Jesse Cervantes, Dominique Austin, Julian Silva, and the crop of Sophomores (Seals, Price, Prieto, Sermons and Maffie). There was no excuse for that team to finish 5-5. Valencia threw up 59 and Notre Dame put up 49. Amat scored 206 that year and gave up 309. I don't think Manzo was the one calling the plays or the defense for Amat. Manzo is one of the most visible AD's in high school sports. Many schools wish their AD was at as many sporting events as Manzo. By the way, was Manzo the one who signaled in to go for it on fourth down against St. Paul? Under Verti, Amat was beaten by more than 20 points on 8 different occasions. They only played 20 games. That means 40% of the time Amat was beaten by more than 20.

No group deserves their "chaotic" lot more than these Amat people.

These saps long for a day that has long since passed. Mediocrity is now your present, and I suspect, your future.

One reminder: Amat (and its fan) based did NOT invent football.

Several parents mentioned that they heard maybe the best candidates would be somebody like Farrar from Charter Oak or Monger from Chino because both are either retired from teaching or can retire from teaching anytime and do not have the same financial stress that other public coaches do meaning losing their retirement package and instead of trying to assemble a staff they instantly could probably bring with them supposedly some of the best coordinators respectively on both sides of the ball and positions coaches immediately. I don't know just a rumor and trying to contribute to the debate.

Personally in my opinion I would bring in somebody younger with that experience and kind of staff that would not retire say in the next however many years he has left coaching. He also should have to be someone who does not plan on being highly mobile anytime soon and use us for something better(although how could there be anyplace better when we would be winning and back on top again) but instead master plan is to bring us back to prominence and the standard of high school football again not just in our Valley but in the Pac-5 and a state championship contender and eventually soon than later back ranked on the national scene.

Please whomever makes the selections please choose the right people to be on the interview committee because that ultimately will be who decides everyone's fate because a collective voice can't possibly be denied and told no can they? God forbid that I pray!

There is a coach over at Walnut HS named Coach Persons who once coached at St. John Bosco, altho he is coachin freshman ball right now he had Walnut winning a few years back. This may be the man for the job with his exp. in both public and Private HS. Does Amat have the pocket book to afford such a coach. I like the idea of a Hart, Canyon, St. Bonnie, Oaks Christian assistant coach looking to take the head post now. Someone no one knows outside the Amat Family. Start fresh!.....anyone over at De La Salle want to to come and make us a winner.

The new Bishop Amat coach will need the following:

Coaching Experience

Proven Winner

Great Recruiter

Coaching Staff

Ability to handle the pressure cooker of coaching at the most prolific high school in the San Gabriel Valley

Some type of connection to Bishop Amat

And the ability to turn a a program around immediately

Bishop Amat will put together a committee that will pick the best qualified coach for the position. Then it is up to Monsignor to either put up the money to bring back Amat’s glory, or go against the committee and continue to watch a proud school with a great tradition turn into a girl’s basketball school.

Candidates:

Coach Gano- POSITIVES Has experiencing coaching Bishop Amat players (well former players). Proven winner, experienced, local ties, and finds away to recruit players. NEGATIVES Will he take a pay cut? He has a daughter attending Los Altos (unless she comes too). He is also the softball coach. And do Amat players flock to him or are they just fleeing from Amat?

Coach Pasqy POSITIVES Proven Winner, experience, successful, has both public and private school (Damien even though the rumor is he did not enjoy it)experience. Was able to turn around Glendora’s program. NEGATIVES is he a good enough recruiter to attract the players and coaches?

Coach Layton POSITIVES Best recruiter when it comes to attracting players and coaches. Amat ties (negative not an alumni), proved he can turn a program around in a hurry (who had heard or cared about DR before he arrived?), energetic and is not afraid of the spotlight or big time opponents. NEGATIVES- Too emotional? (maybe that is a positive?) Has children at DR.

Daylon McCutchen POSITIVES Alumni, Amat Great (player only coaching still has no verdict) young, energetic, would attract players. NEGATIVES only one year of coaching as an assistant in a losing program. Too inexperienced of running a program. Hasn’t even been a coordinator. Represents the “Raider Fan” ‘mentality in the stands.

Coach Aguirre- POSITIVES Connected to Amat, well balance of all that is needed to fill this position. NEGATIVES is he attractive enough to bring in players? Will he take a huge pay cut?

Coach Steve Hagerty- POSITIVES Amat Alumni. Coaching experience at public and Amat. Understands and respects the traditions of Amat (see McCutchen). Has had success. NEGATIVES not a high profile Alumni that would attract the players. Will he take a pay cut?

Get off Verti's back. The guy did the classy thing by stepping down. Now move on like he is going to do.
Outside the lines does sound like someone who works in the Amat offices. Why don't you admit who you really are? And Btw I don't care how connected you are with the program if you don't have the support of the Administration as Verti said he didn't there is no way in hell you are going to be successful. Verti was responsible for most of what you posted however if what one blogger said was true that the AD wanted him to fail then everyone was not on the same page. Good organizations either in business or in sports usually have unity or a least a successful structure in place. It seems in the football dept neither was true. Might be time for the AD to go too!

What a disgrace. The only thing disgraceful is your language. I sure hope you aren't a parent raising kids with a foul mouth like that. Clean it up!!

One more time and you are missing the point. Great coaches , hardly, what have they done to make Amat win and get to the playoffs? Keep them and send them down in the program, ok I can go along with that for the gain of experience factor. Good men, of course they went to Amat for schoooling and were brought up very well rounded and have lots of class to them. Does that make them qualified to coach? NO!. Generic vs Top Brand good analogy and proves my theory, They are generic coaches at this present time. Amat does not have time to waste, they want results on the field and winning breeds intrest and intrest breeds recruitment and recruitment brings more winning. Nice guys finish last. we need some kick ass coaching now! and I mean now. We go into next season with the same staff the same game planning, then the results will be the same, no playoffs, no pride, and pissed off parents, fans, alum and students. We cannot afford to waste this crop of great athletes and mix it with Mediocre coaching. Revamp is necessary to get the optimum performance out of this returning talented crop of players. Amat needs 91 high octane not 87 regular...Look what Rix did for So. Hills QB Cameron Deen. Lets take advantage of the best resources available to us and stop selling ourselves short. We are the SGV D1 rep. and we should start playing like it. I know it is hard to cut ties with family and friends when it come to business but bottom line is if you want a winner you better seek the best to run it at the top. Parcells Big Tuna over in Miami is taking his time to get his coach and staff, why? because he is building a winner, he will seek the best and has been successful rebuilding teams. Those Dallas Cowboys are his team and staff he put in place. Amat open your eyes and go for the gold.

Amat is no more said:

Amat that person you see in the mirror is a Rraider low life, a USC wannabe, a cholo in the making that has bastardized the LA Dodger logo and made it his own. wears bagging pants, plucks his eyebrows, wears white T-shirts that are 4x too big, has an earring in each ear, still wears a fade, lathers himself in silver chains because gold is out of reach, saddles up to a muffin wearing, foul mouth bubble gum chewing hoochie and plays the part in the endzone until their drunk parents, uncles and aunts push them down in the parking lot burping up that greasy pizza talking about players that wouldn't let them park their cars or cut their grass. I went to school with blah blah, like he wants to remember you. You Amat people that blog, for the most part, are a disgrace. Ask around. La Puente has become the place it is because that's what's left. Everyone else moved up the ladder after 20 years. Maybe there are still the hardworking, straight laced do everything by the book parents and students but you'd never know from what you read here. For every success story at Amat their are the people who don't get it. Best of luck working for the county and wearing those faded neon t-shirts with the interchangeable Raider and Amat baseball caps. Oh and about that pizza , it's greasy just like this resignation

I concur they put the family back into it with Dinners and get togethers and are trying to make the boys better people in life etc. DeVera is sprital and god loving friendly etc. I am for all that... but winning is the bottom line and teaching football with the utmost knowledge of the game is what Amat football is craving wanting and needing right now, these present coaches are getting their asses kicked and out smarted by the line coaches and special team coaches and reciever coaches and QB coaches of the Hart's, Alameny's, Lutheran's Notre Dame and Crespi's experienced coaching staffs. Amat cannot wait for these young minded coaches to grow up, we are losing and the leverage of recruitment is dwindling down at a fast pace. Verti is a good head coach but he has no supporting cast with these present coaches. We need outside help for the experience side and we need to stop this promote from within because I was a former player or a student or my mom and dad have a job there or my parents put in lots of volunteer time at Amat. that is not cutting it....Verti needs help and he does not want to can his buddies, I know it is a tough decision but if you want to play the game at the highest level and you want to compete and coach against the best then you need to go out and seek the best for the program. This needs to be addressed before this coming season. The above mentioned coaches know their limitations and if they think they can match wits with those coaches that we play against they are either in denial or in love with the job that they are not specialist at. change is needed big time. the Coach Taylor, Coach McCutchen, Coach Rix, Coach Minor, Coach Polak, now that sounds like a line up coaches that can compete. You want to win? business is business and this is where it stands. It is nothing personal, strictly business.

Magic Johnson was a stand-out Laker and couldn't Coach his way out of a paperbag either.

Why would AMAT take a another chance at not hiring someone with a proven winning record at the HS level?

Is Amat Administration that stupid?

Will they make the same mistake again and let AMAT Football continue its downward spiral?

"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." --Luke 12:48

I wanted to wait until the dust settled a bit and I had a chance to talk to a couple of potential replacements before posting. While this just happened it has been rumbling for a while. There have been "conversations". Even back when MV supporters were talking about a "five-year contract" or chalk-talk confrontations, the administration knew what needed to happen. And as I said - they were listening.

I've got to say that it was big of MV to "lancer up" and step down when he did. I believe him 100% that he did so for the sake of the school, based on his true love for his alma mater. The timing is *crucial* as 8th graders are preparing for the entrance exam and application process. It would have been easier, and may have "looked better" if MV had applied and waited until he got another coaching job then "left for greener pastures". But that may have hurt the applicant pool and he did what was best for the school by throwing himself on his lance for the good of the bigger cause. Very manly act for sure. Props and best of luck - honestly.

As I've written a multitude of times ( go back and look), MV is a good man, a great classroom teacher and can someday become a great coach. Unfortunately he was put in a position to fail. Good coaches NEVER do that to players - good ADMINISTRATORS should never do that to coaches. To butt heads in the Pac-5 and galvanize a program like amat that needed a little shot in the arm to get over the hump, MSGr and MHphd went for the quick and inexpensive solution for a coupe of reasons. 1) Yes, it cost them less and 2) to MV's credit - they didn't want to lose a "potentially" good coach. However, potential doesn't win games TODAY. He just wasn't ready - and that's not his fault. He may be someday - just not here and now. Historically amat is not the kind of school that hires potential. A school with a history of Championships and past National Rankings shouldn't. The amat community expects a coach to come in and hit the ground running and even provide a little jump start to improvement. Salter, Kendrena, Wiard, Lokar, Nieto all come to mind as coaches who improved the team and won BIG in their first seasons at amat in football, basketball, and baseball.

Those who have played, coached or attended games under the "golden a" know the expectations going in. This blog provides no more pressure than the fans gathering in the back room or the parking lot at Pizza Corral (if you don't know - find out!) or when it was popular to pack the faculty house on campus after games. The talk occurred there in just as great a proportion and you know what - it was worse. Because it was personal - you could put a face with what you overheard. Not just a pseudonym or nickname, but that's the nature of blogs. The reaction by the fans in the stands? Guess what? There are a lot fewer fans now than their used to be and while that hasn't changed, how some of our players and families act has. The leadership at the top has to set the tone for the way that they represent themselves - and that has been deteriorating - but that's for a different topic. Amat family to "amat nation" is not a good progression. A true leader outs a stop to that right away. Bottom line, any athlete or coach worth their salt will tell you that the internal pressure to perform is far greater than anything that could be written or said anyway.

Finally, while there a a few very good candidates that have already expressed interest, the job will stay open and resumes will be accepted until January 31st. I personally think that we will get someone from the outside - but with ties to the history of the school, although I hope that they keep Daylon and some selected assistants. There are front-runners and personal favorites, but the real question is whether MSGr will open the pocketbook and do what is necessary to make it happen. And there may be some help coming on the Athletic Director front too.

Stay tuned!

I'd like to see Amat wipe the slate clean and go out and Hire a Pac5 existing head coach or a Pac5 assitant head coach 40 and older in age. Let him bring or assemble his own staff. This is what is needed to compete in this league. I am not sold on Daylon McCutchen as a replacement.

No one blames the principal and the nuns(which are few) are safe. If Outside the Lines was involved in day to day operations, he would know what goes on. Manzo wanted Verti to fail from day one. This comes from the mouth of the school staff who had been close to Manzo since he arrived. Manzo didn't hire Verti so he basically had no personal interest in seeing him succeed.

You are also right that he was not micro managed. Manzo didn't even acknowledge him unless some parent came complaining. Manzo is with Nieto twenty four seven. He talks to him before school, during Nieto's classes and at baseball practice. Football season??? Hopefully agguirre gets the job and becomes the Athletic Director.

And don't get me started on Carroll.

On Second thought, doesn't Outside the Line sound like an administrator???

I have heard rumors of a Mt. SAC coach/coaches being interested in the job. Mt. SAC runs the spread/option/zone-read offense, and they throw 80% of the time; and they also run a state-of-the-art 4-3, hybrid 3-3-5 defensive front.

Who knows...they went 10-3 this year, won the Southern California Championship, and lost the state title by 3 points.

Great staff over there; any of those coaches could take over and do a great job.

Hats off to Coach verti. Great guy, good ooach, and has a bright future in the profession.

I do agree with that Fred, Blogs have become the in thing. With the SGV Tribune blog of sports it is a nice thing to have but some have taken it a little too far in what they post about another mans employment (Verti) not to mention his family etc. for the sake of winning. The hide behind your screen name really opens up this can of worms with no one held accountable for what they post. Freedom of speech I guess but there should be some barriers put up and I know you are trying but the immature that come in here have some hateful and almost sinful ways of talking one down and this not only includes the Verti saga, other coaches were ripped here for various reasons. The Baseball coaches at CO were bad mouthed, the football coaches at Walnut, Pasqy had his haters, Gano had all the Knock Knock Joke about beer drinking. On and on but Mark Verti took allot of crap here which also spilled into the stands at home drunken games and I am sure this had allot to do with his departure. We as alumni and fans at Amat should learn from this and stand behind our new coach and give him the support he needs and refrain from the bashing on this blog, keep it positive but I know I am asking for a miracle. The suprising thing is all this bashing coming from some people who attended Amat or send their kids there, a school that teaches us religion along with being good to mankind. When you pay for a education there is a strong alumni and booster committee that has a say over in private land. Public just keeps going winner or loser, Private takes it serious because money is being thrown down. Does not make it right tho. God Bless our new coach. Be cool Lancer Fans and give this new guy the respect he deserves. Mark Verti deserved respect and some of you killed a good thing.

So typical, blame the principal, president, AD, for the woes of hiring an alumni & faculty member. Coach Verti applied for the job, he knew what he was getting into, admitted to that fact, did you read his statement. Lack of support, lack of resources—a bunch of horseshit. The principal, president, AD, and the nuns at the school did NOT call the offense, did NOT call the defense, did NOT run special teams, did NOT run day to day practices, did NOT scout opponents, did NOT condition the players etc…..Bottom line a coach was given a substantial salary increase as well as assistants. Assistants were given teaching positions left to the discretion of the head coach as he saw fit. A coach was given substantial latitude and financial discretion in the hiring of his support staff. He was not micro managed by any administrator, he was given a great responsibility to develop a total football program, a nationally recognized program and he and his staff to say politely were not up to the challenge. That was a condition for his job, it should not come as a surprise –the next coach will be given the same accords. Academic teachers and athletic coaches alike are given latitude & freedom to develop their lessons and practices/game strategy without extensive interference by administrators. Coaches all over the country have resigned or have been terminated from their coaching positions and the bottom line is you have to WIN, that is what is expected. NOT 50 point losses, running clocks against Notre Dame, coaches not putting the time in to run a year round football program of prominence, poor weight training and conditioning, athletes leaving and declaring in this newspaper that they left because they did not want to play for the current staff and head coach. All damaging, NOT as a result of any administrator, a result of what was transgressed on the football field during Friday night games and weekly practices all under the direction of a head football coach, not the nun, president, principal or AD. And by the way the president, principal, AD and that nun at the school are not going anywhere anytime soon –so deal with it.

I wonder if all the so-called Amat supporters know they're doing themselves a disservice by being so critical and personal in their comments. The first day I met Verti and some of his staff during the summer, they talked to me about this blog, and Verti shared his feelings about it. Not just Verti, but other coaches in the area talked to me about it as well. It does take its toll. I've always felt the coaches have thick skin and can take it. But when it comes to their families and close friends, and what they read and hear in the stands, that's when it gets tough.
The bad news ... Blogs, and not just this one, are the way of the future. There's no hiding from it, and more will pop up as the years move on.

Wow, A good man I say resigns from the toughest Coaching position in the Valley. A Coach who's team had the toughest schedule in the state of California this past season, resigns for the great love of this school.

People have been asking for this, and now they will see how good of man he really is. This new Coach comes into a good situation, he has seniors that will work their butt off, the numbers will be up on the varsity level. But they have a ten times easier schedule then they did last year. They should and will beat the likes of Los Osos, West Co, D-Ranch, Serra and so on. These are games that will be won if Verti was the coach or not. But who will get all the recognition the new Coach.

I hope Verti does well. I heard he's going to stay at Amat and teach good for him. But their are plenty of jobs open right now. Chino Hills look a quality school. But who knows. Good job Coach Verti. Thanks for all you have done for Amat.

To whoever the new Coach is, we hope the best for you. Because you come in to the most ridiculed yet famous football school in the Valley BISHOP AMAT.

When you are not given all the resources from your boss to do a good job most of time you will fail. This was the case here with coach Verti, no backing from Manzo and The Monsignor. All of us alumni know that football season is our bread winner with revenue and Manzo and the Monsignor thought pay a coach less reap the benefits at the gate because of the huge following Amat has on Friday nites, well there were empty seats this year as well as early exits not to mention the crack down on the tailgate parties add that to a losing squad and the intrest in Amat football was starting to become hum drum, they most likely lost money this year or broke even seeing that they were paying the coach peanuts. Well whoever comes in I am sure will be demanding more cash then Verti and is Amat willing to pay that.? I say yes, Nieto comes in and wins, the Soccer coach comes in and instantly turns the girl soccer team around, the wrestling coach has achieved greatness the girls basketball team is the top dog in that school but our football team was horrible. The bar has been set high now. Change was necessary but not because Verti was a bad coach but becuase he had no backing from the top. I bet he had no budget to go out and hire some good assistants. He did what was best for the school by leaving and if you dont think that Verti and his assitants do not come in here and read what this blog is saying you are wrong. They come in and most of the pressure of what Verti felt was from this blog. It does go with the territory but some of crap that came out of here was not true about this gentleman. Verti will coach again, it is sad how how some treated him along with yelling obsentities during games at him while his wife and parents sat there and heard all this. That is part where you draw the line. Ok Verti is gone but what really need to leave our beloved school is the Raider fan mentallity that is now enrolling at Amat..we need to get rid if the riff raff...I like it when the tailgate had sheriffs there it got rid of that BS...good luck to the new coach and I hope all of our players return. Hope this next coach does get knocked around here on the blog like Verti did, but you know he will if he does not produce a winner instantly.

With a new coach maybe the right guy will start at QB. Jerry McClanahan should have started over Nick Lenhart. Let's see if daddy can still buy the new coach.

Another Alum to think about is Steve Hagerty. He has the cif rings as both a head coach and assistant both at private and public schools. The question is does Amat pay what most public teachers already get to bring in a quality coach?

It's a shame that Mark was ever put in this situation to begin with. The blame should be put upon Msgr. Carroll he is the one who should be receiving all the blame. Mark is a great person and does not deserve what he got. He was thrown into the fire without any guidance or support staff. The hiring of John Aguirre is the right choice. I hear he is going to bring back some of the old staff. And bring back the traditon of AMAT OM BLUE

Layton also gets kicked out of games. Never seen Salter or Paredes do that.

Layton has bad mouth Amat behind closed doors especially after the Sermons ordeal.

Aguirre is a perfect fit plus he has already coached at Amat.

Does anyone think Manzo has a prayer of staying if Aguirre is hired? Hopefully Nieto will leave after this year and take his lackey with him.

Going in different directions. Verti took over a 6-4 Lancer squad with huge potential. He went 5-5 the first year with no playoffs, and 3-7 this year. Layton took over a 2-8 squad and goes to the quarter finals last year and went 7-3 this season. Energetic, inspirational, well connected, head coaching experience, college coaching experience, USC grad, and I am sure we can pay more than Pomona. Alumni it is time we take care of our business. We know more than the AD about Amat Family!

Inside information people....
Gano never applied for the position
No one has been given the position yet
There WILL be open call for coaches, so NO one is a sure thing yet.
A selection committee will be formed to review the applicants.
We are a long way from selecting anyone....so just keep on guessing....and don't necessarily think its going to be filled from within again.

To be continued folks.

Aguirre would be a Fantastic hire by Amat, as we know he was the "desired" person the last time around.

Verti was a very good guy, that as I and other Alumni know never had the right support from the AD like he should have.

It's been said here in the past, that without the support of the Athletic Director, NO ONE will suceed. Yes, even Aguirre will fail. Think about it, WOULD YOU SUCCEED if you DIDN'T have the SUPPORT of YOUR BOSS???

NO!!

This is a very good step in the right direction for Amat, but if you want the Alumni to return and support the Program like it should, then Manzo needs to go too.

Start COMPLETELY FRESH AMAT, hire a new Coach/Athletic Director and get rolling forward.

I remember reading that Manzo has not attended ANY of the past State Champions/Finalist Girls Basketball Teams banquets over the past 4 years, because he has a Personal problem with the Wiard family. He sent his straight man, Canales to "represent". What is that???

Again, MANZO MUST GO!!

Alumni, it you have any current connections with Amat, YOU KNOW what I'm saying is TRUE. We need to band together and email/write/call the Amat Administration and let them hear what we have to say, MANZO MUST GO!!

No more PAID FOR BMW'S.... NO MORE "Privileged Golf Cart Ride Sharers!!

You are not an Amat person, never have been, never will be.... You don't know HOW AMAT DOES THINGS!!!

You too, do the right thing and resign as well!!

Sorry, all... didn't mean to ramble on and on, but just very passionate about this!!

Here's to hoping the right thing happens!!

Peace!!

Notes on Amat

Wow ! What a major story this is. It is by far the bigest thing to happen here in the SGV in the recient past.

With this in mind I hope that the bloggers are correct in that Aguirre will be the next coach at Amat, simply because he is a proven winner at this level. I just hope it's not some other local coach from the local area, because, in my opinion, none of them will be able to compeate with the big boys of the Pac5.

For what is worth, I feel very bad for Verti because I know that he tryed his best, no matter what I or others have said here in the past.

Still, the facts were what they were and there seemed to be an obvious need for a change at the top.

It now falls on the monsenior to make the right call, because if he hires the wrong person, then it will be he, who you'll be reading about on the front pages of this blogg next year.

Amat Guy said:

If Aguirre comes on, how do we pay for him?

I have a suggestion. Give him the AD job then we can get rid of Manzo.

On Blue said:

Aguirre is not a rumor, it is a DONE DEAL. He will be your next Amat coach. Daylon, Pernell, and Spooner are secure in their jobs. Don't post any other candidates because it is a done deal with Aguirre.

New York said:

Glendora would have been good for him. He lives there.

FredJ said:

Your right New York, but I know Garrison has looked from time to time. I heard he applied for the Glendora job before it was given to Pasquarella.

Amat has a good team coming back, the question now is will the big names stay? If they do, the next coach is in good shape.

New York said:

It takes a lot of administrative support to have a successful football program, especially in a turnaround situation. DiFiori is a good coach who had prior experience. Salter left under less than desirable circumstances. Amat needs support from the top.

Coach Garrison has been teaching since the early 1980's. Any public school teacher of that tenure is at a step on the pay scale that is likely too expensive for most private schools. That is the flaw in hoping Amat will bring in one of the "local legends," unless Amat will match the public school pay. Garrison is good with turnarounds, though.

FredJ said:

I was hoping Mark would give himself at least another year given what the Lancers have coming back. But I wasn't surprised he resigned because he talked about the pressure and how it was mounting over there. But he's going to be a great coach, he's only 29 and this experience is only going to make him stronger.

Hey New York, think Steve Garrison would be interested?

New York said:

It's almost as if Fred knew something, given his comment about Layton from Diamond Ranch.

How about Mike the Clone he loves you guys?

Bleeds Blue and Gold said:

Coach Verti is not going anyplace. He is staying at his teaching position at the school.

I still say some of the assistants needed to change but that will definitley happen now. Some are good and should stay and I've already posted those names before.

Now if we can only get Manzo and Msgr. to follow suit.

AMAT 73 said:

No matter who gets the job they will be put in a very tough situation. My hope that it is someone with some sort of history of success in a previous stint from a proven winning program. If it happens that Daylon gets the nod let's show a little more patience then was giving to Coach Verti.

Blue said:

This young man was set up for Failier by Manzo and Monsignor. Verti is a good stand up guy and altho he was very young to be given the reins of a storied Football conglamorate, he did the best he could. The AD and Monsignor tried to save money and went with the young man and the results were not good. Verti was not seasoned enough to take on this big program but this is not to say he may never return to Amat, he just needs more experience but he will one day become a great find for a school when it comes to their Football team, as well as in their classroom (outstanding teacher). I liked Mark Verti and I just dont think the time was there for him to have on the job training, Amat wants a winner and their fans, alumni, boosters expect it. (well not all but most.) No one liked seeing Amat fall the way they did and the whole SGV was screaming and I am sure Mark heard them. He is doing this for the better of Amat. He knows they will do better without him. This is a young man with vision and we will be great someday. Verti put the school before himself and for this I commend him for. Good Luck Coach Verti you will bounce back.

Bill said:

No surprise here. Verti was taking a beating on these blogs and I also called for him to step down yesterday. Maybe he read my post and decided it was time to toss in the towel! Mark you were in over your head at BA but best of luck in your future. Maybe you can apply at Wilson which might be a better fit for you.

A great fit at BA would be Pasqy over at Glendora. He has been successful where ever he has coached, also has had to recruit like he did at Damien as he will at Bishop Amat. He took a crappy Glendora program and has turned it around in the last few years. He has local connections because of him coaching in this area for many years. Pasqy go toss your resume into the pile pal. I think you would do well there!

BRJR said:

I FOR ONE AM SORRY TO SEE MARK GO. HE IS TRULY A CLASS INDIVIDUAL AND A GREAT COACH. HE WAS GIVEN AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT SCHEDULE AND HAD TO PLAY WITH A DEPLETED ROSTER. HIS KIDS PLAYED HARD AND CLEAN EVEN WHEN THEY WERE OVERMATCHED. THEY DISPLAYED THEIR AMAT PRIDE IN SPITE OF VERY TRYING CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST COMPLIMENT I CAN GIVE HIM. REMEMBER, THESE ARE KIDS AND THERE ARE BIGGER ISSUES THAN WINS AND LOSSES TO TEACH THESE YOUNG MEN. AMAT WILL BE AN ELITE PROGRAM AGAIN, YOU CAN BANK ON IT.

2003 CIF City Champion Carson HS - John Aguirre.

Google Coach John Aguiire.

All kinds of positive atricles on him.

Rumor is he will be Amat's new head coach.

Freshman class will be strong group.

Players will transfer in.

It's up in the air who stays at all levels.

It doesn't spell complete doom for local programs

Los Altos did well when Amat was a power house.

This will make an impact on the Valley though.

I think it's a good thing.

Both for Amat and Coach Verti.

Verti gets a fresh new start somewhere else.

Where there is less pressure.

He can make a name for himself and grow.

Better than being known as the coach who let a

Pac 5 school fail.

Good direction for Amat hopefulls and loyals.

Amat stays in the Pac 5 and rebuilds.

In due time.

The Bishop Amat Lancers will re-establish

themselves as a power house once again.

I sure would like to be that fly on the wall in Gano’s office when he reads that the Bishop Amat job is open again;

It is going to be a real interesting month.

It needs to be a coach with big name that will attract players..

Jerry Jaso, Ex Poly and LBCC head coach..
Dusan Ancich, Young coach , that kids love to play for..

Amat Guy said:

1. Who will be the coach?
On these blogs, the mentioning of McCutcheon and Agguirre as head coach have surfaced. Youth, name, inexperience, and connections vs. age, name, Successful head coaching experience, and connections. Gano doesn't sound too happy at Los Altos but he is not leaving that money. I would say the same for Bogan. But if they did, they can restore a Valley power and destroy another almost instantly.

2. How does this impact recruiting or admissions?
I think it will have a great positive feedback. Players will be lining up as soon as tomorrow to gain admission or transfer. According to everyone on this blog, anyone is better than Verti, right? So a new coach with the credentials will equal players. Any linemen out there looking for that chance to shine in the PAC 5. It worked wonders for E.J. Woods.

3. Who stays in the program at all levels?
McCutcheon is probably the only one with job security. Freshman level? We haven't gone undefeated in years. JV? Maybe a few of the Varsity coaches. Varsity? Doesn't sound like any? I would keep a few though and spread them around on the lower levels. Just because they didn't win doesn't mean they can't coach. There has been some seasoning and we don't want to lose out on someone special. Let some of these guys grow more at the lower levels.

4. Does anyone transfer?
They would be stupid to transfer now. Those that whined about playing time have a chance to impress a new coach. Those that leave might miss something special. Plus we have Valley schools on our schedule. Time to shut up some people in the SGV and take back some players.

5. Does this spell doom for local programs?
With the right hire. Local schools have been eating up our talent the past five years. If Amat gets a high profile coach, all of the kids come back. Our team of 65 goes back to ninety. And the Amat Haters change their tune from Amat sucks to Amat cheats.

6. Your thoughts
Coach Verti is one of our own. He is a quality teacher and a good coach. He has taken more heat than anyone of us can imagine. People were calling for his head as soon as he had the job. No one comes to our cubicles and yells how we suck, threatens us, Put their hands on us. Nobody comes to our place of work and threatens us with lawsuits, call us racists, or spit on us. He was given a difficult schedule and did the best he could. He never lost in overtime and always beat our rivals. I pray that we treat him well on this blog because while you don't leave your name on here he always left his name on the field every day.

And after posting this, I'm going to pray for the next coach and give some advice. You better win fast because you'll get ripped after the first game if you don't.

I thought of questions that should be on the mind of the Amat Family. If the bloggers can keep to this format we can probably get some dialogue on what we, as observers, feel should be done. I left #6 open for those who tend to be long winded...I mean for those who like to articulate their thoughts.

Questions that need to be answered before the semester:

1. Who will be the coach?

2. How does this impact recruiting or admissions?

3. Who stays in the program at all levels?

4. Does anyone transfer?

5. Does this spell doom for local programs?

6. Your thoughts
