Football: What will happen in 2008?
Okay, so it's way to early to forecast the 2008 football season, but 2008 is here and we're doing it anyway. Obviously this list can change by fall, but for now this is my list and I'm sticking with it. In the coming weeks we will discuss the top returning players at each position.

Above: Bishop Amat's Jesse Prieto hoping for a big senior year in 08.
1. Bishop Amat - I know what you're thinking, Bishop Amat? Is he crazy. Well, after a 3-7 campaign and two years under coach Mark Verti, I like the Lancers' chances at not only finishing above .500, but going 6-4, or even better. Don't forget this is a team that beat Western Division champion St. Paul during the regular season. What other area team had a bigger win on its resume in 2007? The Lancers finished with a nice win over Loyola, and return seven players that either made first or second team from the Serra League, which says a lot. Quarterback Nick Lenhart is back for his senior season along with running back/linebacker Jesse Prieto. Also back are soon to be seniors Brent Seals (LB) and Sheldon Price (DB) - both Serra League first team selections. And there's more with Jerry McClananan (WR), Isaiah Bowens (LB) returning after earning second team honors, and another fine defensive back in Justin Gener. With Amat's schedule, they might not stay here, but if we created a 16-team tournament for local teams in 2008, I'd pick the Lancers to win it all , so I'm starting with them at the top until they prove otherwise.
2. South Hills -- The Huskies lose player of the year Dorian Wells along with Brandon Parham, Damon Kuklinski and Kebin Umodo, but look what's coming back. This is still a team beaming with talent. Cameron Dean will be a senior and is 10-1 as a starting quarterback. Evan Heard will take over the reigns in the backfield, and they have studs on both sides of the line with Chris Bowden (Sr.), Alex Barrios (Sr.), Wayne Goss (Sr.), Ty Olsen (Sr.) and then Miles Bevel (DB) controlling the secondary. All the pieces are in place to chase another San Antonio League title and CIF championship. Too bad they didn't schedule Amat, that would have been great to see.
3. Diamond Ranch - If you take away the forfeits, Diamond Ranch went 7-3 in 2007 and will be better in 2008. Soon to be senior Brandon Sermons, who was the player declared ineligible which led to the forfeits, will be one of their biggest impact players returning along with running back Brian Spirlin. Also back is tight end/linebacker Bryan Bonilla. If they find a suitable replacement for graduating quarterback Joe Carillo, they will be very explosive. But as they're assembled now, you have to consider them the Miramonte League favorites. Obviously, I can't wait to see how they do against Bishop Amat, but Roddy Layton will have them fired up for it, that's for sure.
4. Bonita - You have to love this team with Terry Paradez back at quarterback, Jiovanni Mier at wide receiver, and Brian Hubbard back at running back. Even leading tackler Jeff Galalich is back along with tough guy Robert Schmitt. So many others also return for coach Eric Podley. I'm going with Diamond Ranch as the Miramonte League favorites, but wouldn't be surprised if this is the Bearcats' season to shine
5. Charter Oak - What will happen after losing what coach Lou Farrar described as one of his best senior-driven teams? I expect third-year starting quarterback Chris Allen to have a huge senior season, and as he goes, so will the Chargers. But the biggest impact player will be soon to be junior running back Adam Muema. He was the best sophomore in 2007, and showed flashes of brilliance in spotted time behind Kanaan Snowden. Those two alone allow the Chargers to keep a top five ranking despite the senior departures. Will there be enough on the O-Line to compliment Allen and Muema, that's the question. Defensively, there will be lots of new faces too, but Farrar and his coaching staff are experienced enough to deal with the changes, so the Chargers will be fine. But good enough to win the Miramonte or make a run in CIF? I'm not so sure about that.
6. West Covina - After a so-so season the Bulldogs are back and equipped to go toe-to-toe with the Huskies in 2008. Soon to be junior Jacob Shirley is going to shine at quarterback after a season of getting his feet wet. Also look for Ricky Johnson to have a big season at tailback following the departure of Isaac Tucker. And there are other big returnees like Albert Cid (down lineman), Alonzo Nevarez (linebacker), Richard Tejada (Guard), Jon Hernandez (DB), and Donald Scheffler (LB). Coach Mike Maggiore himself told me they will be back, so I'm taking his word for it.
7. San Dimas - How will San Dimas follow a 9-2 season and a tri-league title? You would think all conversations start and end with third-year starting running back Nico Barbone, but you have to love the fact that Erek Brown and Daniel Joseph return along with Barbone in the backfield. Mick Kalmar is also back at quarterback, and then you have Randy Hoskins, Kyle Withem and Ryan Doll, all of whom made all-league, returning. The Saints aren't going anywhere. This could be an offensive machine and if they take care of business defensively, they could be even better that 2007 and is my favorite to win the Valle Vista.
8. Glendora -- Following its first Sierra League title since 1993 and its 9-3 season and quarterfinal appearance in the Inland Division playoffs is going to be tough for a Tartans squad that graduated so many impact seniors, especially in the trenches. The Tartans lose nine Sierra League first team players, including league MVP Michael Edwards, running back Jake Vega, and many others. QB Drew Kaluzny is back for his senior year, but he will have several new faces around him. In fact, the Tartans had 13 sophomores on their roster, so how they develop with the next group of seniors will be key. What you know for sure is that coach Mark Pasquarella will have a plan and they will be competitive. But it will be interesting to watch how this unfolds.
9. Northview - The rumor is that Northview wanted to schedule South Hills in 2008 and got their wish because the Vikings feel like this is one of their best senior teams in years. In fact, the Vikings even inquired about facing Bishop Amat, but that's didn't happen. QB Oscar Robles started strong in 2007, but needs to get his mojo back because there is a lot of talent coming back with him, like soon to be senior wide receivers Anthony Farmer and Kevin Jones. Linebackers Andrew Rodriguez and Christian Vargas also are back with many others. I'm still not completely sold. I'd like to see this team play a little tougher, but the talent is there if they compete.
10. South El Monte -- The defending Mission Valley League champions return Jose Garay, the Tribune's quarterback of the year who is sure to have a big senior season. Although receiver Tommy Cogburn graduates, Manny Acosta is more than capable of becoming their big impact split end and Neiko Padilla replaces Jonathan Mendoza in the backfield. Offensively, Carlos Chacon (tackle), Robert Cedeno (guard) are back after earning first team league honors. Another league title is theirs for the taking.
Others to consider: Am I crazy for leaving Damien and Los Altos off the top ten list? Should Wilson, with Tim "Happy" Gilmore as a player of the year candidate be among the top teams? In Damien and Los Altos' case, they just don't have enough returning on paper. Based on past history, they probably should get the benefit of the doubt, but as of now they have to prove their way back. Wilson simply doesn't have enough to surround Gilmore, but he will be fun to watch. Also look out for Rosemead, Arroyo, Covina, Duarte, and perhaps even La Puente, Rowland, and Walnut. Yes, I said Walnut.

The Pot will stay where it belongs... Right in the front lobby of SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL
BONITA WILL BE A GOOD TEAM THIS YEAR THEY ARE ALWAYS UNDERESTIMATED YET COMPETE WITH GREAT SCHOOLS LIKE CO LA DR AND EVEN AN OCCASIONAL GOOD SD I EXPECT THEM TO HAVE A GOOD SEASON THIS YEAR AND BRING BACK THE SMUDGEPOT
BONITA
Mean Machine,
Thanks for the input. Sorry to hear about your son but I am sure in whatever else he throws himself into to cover the void he will have as much success as he did in wrestling. As we say God works in mysterious ways. Hopefully all the speculation on AMAT will come to pass next season. Whether it is AMAT or Damien as you and I both know the bottom line is the valuable education these young people are receiving is what matters most. Hey you forgot Kardashian.
Amat 73...last time I checked Brittany Spears, Anna Kornikova(sp), Air Head Simpson and Nicole Ritchie get alot of "hits" as well.
That's not something to be proud of. Just kidding.
Most of the Amat bloggers are either part of the problem while thinking they are part of the solution or just LOYAL ALUMNI like yourself. Bleeding Blue and Gold NO MATTER WHAT!
Best of luck to Bishop Amat Memorial High School. Much like Notre Dame University, kids still go to Amat with the hope of fulfilling childhood dreams of wearing the Blue and Gold and not because of who the coach is. THAT'S A FACT!
I think Bishop Amat will continue it's history of playing the best and being the best in the valley. That might not be enough for some but ask yourself how well would Damien players Luiten 6"4" 295, Turner 6'4' 270, Mendrun POY POTENTIAL, Rabe 6'5" 290, Smitty 6'6" 335, McMahon, Herrera Sierra League 100 meter Champion as a Soph., Miller 6'2" 245, Walsh 6"6" 235 ,Malady 6'2" 255, ect ,have done at Bishop Amat? Still the toughest place to play football...and clearly the toughest year in year out in terms of competition. Just look at Mc Bride and Wells and their INSTANT IMPACT.
Please no digs just laying out the facts for my buddy Amat 73.
Well what do you know. First blog topic of the year revolves around AMAT and gets 109 hits. Who says we are not the talk of the valley. Win or lose we are the always on the minds of everybody out there in the valley. God forbid we do make the turn and rise to the top because then who will all of you haters have to bash on. Reality is we are looking for the number 1 ranking in the Pac 5 not the SGV but it is nice to know Fred thinks that highly of the mighty Lancers.
Jared Arnold is a big kid that plays like a girl he is not tuff out there he needs to drop a sac on the field and as for michael hoskins he is the next valles he is not dedicated to the team and from what i here is a bib baby just like Jared michael came from west covina and got rid of one of our star coners if you all remember eric rodgers who is currently playing for CO and they have made it to the playoffs so who ever said that these guys are a big asset to the team they a wrong they suck

Doughboy,
That's why I said I'll take a haters comments with a grain of salt. Ummm.. has an inside track but until things play out there is nothing to say on the subject.
Its real easy for WC, SH, CO, and every one else to start talking trash about amat you would think SH would challenge amat after killing WC, last year but WC, has the bigger balls to step up and DR. to play amat
put amat in the San Antonio league and they would be talked about like royalty put in the San Antoino league and it would be like Crespi and ND had a win already
ya Amat got killed by Crespi a team that almost won it all, ya they gave up 50 to ND but did you forget about the 30 Amat put up.
It could and should be a long road back to the top and it starts in 2008
Ummmm OK
I understand where your coming from and appreciate your loyalties. I myself dream of huskie puppies running through tall fields of grass and form ficious packs and bringing home championships. Maybe next year. We came ohh so close this year, and we will continue to fight the fight. We dream in division 6 too. Amat has smelled the sweetness of success and with its rich history and loyal fan base its only a matter of time before you reach the top of the mountain again. My feelings are to support all programs. I've been fortunate enough to know many of the young men playing throughout the valley and the coaches. I only wish for their success and watching these young men play at the next level. For now wether your a nationally ranked team or a 500 team. Enjoy the moments, the the expierences you share with these young men. fight on
hey i dont know if this has spread yet but i hear jason teter, dominique louera, josh tierney, and jerry mcclanahan are all deciding if they should transfer to hogwarts school of withchcraft and wizardry. it has one of the best teams in the area and would really help their team if these players decide to come in their program.
good luck to these fine young gentlemen
To Everyone,
The comments that Derrick said are not true!!!
He is staying at Amat and wants to win!!!!
If he was transfering he would have already did it.
Umm...
Looks like you got me. I never knew how deep you were into the situation but it looks like you have better info than I'll ever have. Well then if this is true then you and the boys will have to deal with on a personal level. Good luck.
Perez tore his knee up against Crespi on a kickoff and is spouting off after that. Will he even come back the same? Sounds like Tony Adamds all over again. Hope he transfers out. Our best season is coming up and we dont need this kind of Crap to ruin it. GOOD RIDDANCE.

Hope I was gone lone enough for you... guess not.
I agree with most of you comment, but it is also difficult not to keep quiet, when someone bad mouths something that is that big a part of our lives. Understand, the players on the team are truly a family, sometimes we spend more time together than we do with our own families. If someone bad mouths or tries to put down someone in your own family, you are going to defend them or do something about it, right? That is really my only purpose on this blog. I apologize if I came on so strong, and made it seem as if I was trying to hype up the program. That was never my purpose. But it is upsetting when you see so much crap that is being said about your family. I'm man enough to admit that I let my emotions get the best of me on this blog, but can you really blame me for being upset? People can say well shut everybody up with your play on the field next year... That can be true for the class of '09, but unfortunately the seniors of this years team do not have that luxary. And If we could... I bet every last one of us would come back and redeem ourselves, but that is not a possibility.
Bleeds Blue and Gold at January 7, 2008 1:00 PM
Normally I wouldn't look too much into it either, but the probability that he did say that and he didn't show, make's it somewhat suspicious. I'm assuming that your a parent or someone who is around the program a lot at least. If youy have seen how he carry's himself at practice and at school, you can tell how cocky he is. I have to see him everyday at school and had to share a locker room with him. You really get to know a person and what they are all about when you spend that much time in the off season and during the season. It doesn't suprise me if he left, because it is true what you said...He will not play over seals or prieto.
And he has that cocky attitude about him, which players can't really do anything about it b/c the school will find out about it one way or another and then you have players either on prohbation, suspencion or expulsion. I remember hearing about the old days when you could "tame" these cocky players. Wish those days were still around.
I wouldn't out too much into the fact that he did not show up for the banquet. There were at least another dozen that were no-shows.
Everyone knows that the only way they are going to replace Seals and Prieto is if they need a break for a play or two or they go down by injury.
I AM THE ORIGINAL BLEEDS BLUE AND GOLD...
J.A.A.P. amd Umm...
For now, I would take SGV Fans comments with a grain of salt. Can you REALLY believe everything a hater says? Time will tell, if he did say it and he wants leave, he'll be gone in 6 months anyway. If he did say it and stays, he'll have to face the 62 other guys on the team. This is a long way from playing out.
Reguarding Amat and Perez,
If he claims Amat sucks, tell Derrick to go tell Silva,Austin,Pacheco,Stremple,Andrew Hernandez,Valles,Cody Taylor, Mead-Villar and Wagner this to their face. These Seniors would have had him run back from The 7-11 on Orange naked then stuff him in his locker and lock it. Upland can have you, you are not that good. You have size but are too slow to the ball. Amat is not the school for you. This sounds to me like a Player / Parent crybaby tactic for more playing time. It will not work with Verti so head up the 10fwy people. As much as Dad and Kid bad mouth the school, the coaches, etc, it is a wonder why the PT is not there. These are not the POP Warner, Jr. All American days anymore dad, this is HS ball and if cannot hang at Amat like it showed our team is not for you. Perez is a sophmore and is most likely being pressured by (living my non HS playing days thru my Son) Dad.
Umm Ok
Believe me you were'nt missed. Be gone awhile longer. Your ramblings about almighty Amat are almost to much to bare. You should read the post by "A Lesson in Class January 5,2008 11:08 PM. I know Amat is rich in tradition, Has great fan support, and talented kids. Dont build them up so high that if they fail ( I said if) the whole valley points its finger at you. I remeber the days of Minor,Brown, McCutchen and Bienamie. I was proud to live in an area that had a Nationally ranked team. And yes I went to many of those games But because you rant and rave on this blog everytime Amat fails people look at Amat and Think Ha. Speak softly and carry a big Golden A to a state final. Let your works lead you to the path of rightousness. I'm sure Amat coaches would agree. shhhh.
south el monte will come
out victorious in the midvalley.
there only struggle will be rosemead.
jose will pick away there defense fast and quickly.hes just to experience for the midvalley.
the question is that is there running game gonna be good?
well it should with the line that's coming back.
it should be a great 2008 season
Now this is funny...

Wow, I hope that when you put that "haha" at the end of the statement you were kidding,b/c if you weren't then your are completely clueless. The day Mt. View beats Amat in football, is the day I commit suicide.
You said that you spoke to Derrick Perez, and he said we suck. Well, I want to try and point out two things. 1st... Although it would not be out of character for him to say (he's a bit immature in my opinion), I doubt he would have said that. Derrick Perez is a sophmore, who was digruntled because he thought he should have been starting over Brent seals and Jessie Prieto, because he did a little here and there on the freshman team the year before. 2nd... Derrick Perez was not getting the pt he wanted, except on special teams... so the coaches thought the way he would develop is if he got some experience on JV, instead of seeing it as an oppertunity to develop, he was immature about it and took it pretty badly. So maybe you should talk to someone who wasn't disgruntled with the program.
just to clear up... when I say "send him" I mean D Wells... you don't seem that bright... so i thought I would clear that up for you ok... ohh... Now You shhh...
Sorry, I've been gone for a bit,
To: A Fan at January 4, 2008 8:06 PM
Im not saying that we are as good as the past Amat in any way shape or form, b/c, yes those teams would've won those tough games. Im simply defending the claim that Most Valley teams can keep up with Amat.
To answer your question... uhhh YEAH, I think the Amat teams of today can keep up and beat these teams. Have you ever been to an Amat game. Perhaps you should attend one. Then the following week attend another local teams game... I think You'll notice the difference in game speed immediately. Don't believe me or just don't want to wait that long... Take Bryce Mc Bride(LA), If you remember played at BA for three years, he developed in our program, Look at his highlights from this year (they're all over You Tube)... he looks like phenom...It looked as if he was making cuts before the defenders knew what they were doing. He was good, but didn't do that at Amat. Wonder Why? I know I played with him for three years. Dorian Wells, good, but still would not of done that at Amat. All this hype about Jr. Tamayo at LA as well, he looked good for a while, and he was a 4th string Qb at Amat, and ends up as a starter for LA. Yup there is defenitely a difference in talent, or the development of in this case and game speed.
Also, get your facts straight, we didn't really "send" him to SH (duh), he was no longer allowed back at Amat, due to disciplanary reason, not anything that has to do with the football program.
Call up Bogan and Farrar... Im sure they're just waitin to play Amat. Im sure Farrar is just dying to play Amat again... when their "best teams in years" (which included all evrything Will Harris) Lost 28-0. and that off-season, they tried to get out of that contract which they asked for. huh? Im sure if Bogan really wanted to play Amat in the last couple of years he would have, especially now that the program is down. but I'm assuming Bogan isn't really much of a gamblinig man. He knows if he plays Amat and loses, people in that area have the money to send their son's to Amat, so why take the risk. Now if he beats Amat, then he may even retain more talent from that area, so either he's not much of gambiling man or he doesn't have that much confidence in his program.
South El Monte will have a hard time scoring next season. Trying to replace Cogburn will be difficult.
Unless they get some transfer players in. They will finish third at best in the Mission Valley league.
John:
Who the heck are you to make such presumptions about amat's coaching staff. you named two guys on the staff (who happen to be hall of famers for the lancers) and now they are coaches. Good for them. But what exactly do you want Verti to change? Which coaches are not cutting it. Cause all you seem to be giving on this blog is crap. Tell me, who needs to be changed? Im curious, cause i went to their practices quite a bit and went to other local practices and could tell you who coaches and who doesn't. So tell me besides names who could coach. Cause coaching is not the same as playing.
Can Jose Garay have a good year without his
#1 reciever Tommy Cogburn?
Can Neiko Padilla replace Jonathan Mendoza?
Can South hold on to there 3rd straight title?
Arroyo is rebuilding
but Rosemead has alot of talent coming back...
who will dominate mission valley?

Amat09,
Read my comments I am not anti but instead pro Bishop Amat and feel strongly that our Valley needs you to be successful. Your right no one else in the Valley can, will, or does compete at a level you do consistently every week nor has the potential of being a top tier team like yourselves on a state and national level. Your right again in that you are the best football team in the Valley. I apologize if I upset you because I was not trying to "talk smack" but thought you understood I have your best interest when I say Lancer teams years ago would never condone nor allow such cockiness posted on a blog. The Lancers back when they were a powerhouse were always silently very confidence and let their talking speak for on the field. I respect your intensity and passion and realize just how important this season is for everyone at Bishop Amat so again "Good luck in the offseason, get bigger, stronger, and faster, and the Valley really does want/need you to be successful so do your talking on the field before you make matters worse and its too late..." Maybe I am just too superstitious but sometime late in November comments like you have posted tonight always seem to have a dark side to them too and I worry about if you are representing the attitude of the Lancers? I won't fault you for what you have expressed tonight and your teammates are not guilty by association but do your family, school, and team a favor and walk away from the computer and just work as hard as you can this offseason. Everything else God willing take care of itself!
Amat will fall once again
i think mt.view can beat them haha...
face it amat
your losing players every second
i was talking to derrick perez and he said
you guys suck.
and that he wants to move to upland
yup thats what im just syaing
a lesson in class,
Before you start talking your smack you should take it to the field first. And no im not about against nogales, west covina, or walnut. Im talking about taking it to Orange Lutheran, Crespi, Notre Dame. Hahaha the teams you play are all a joke. You guys talk all this ish but you play ranked teams in the valley. When you start playing ranked teams in state or even better nation then talk. Who knows maybe this does come back to haunt us who knows? But in the end amat is still #1 in valley in my eyes. They may not have the best record but they certainly will have no problem beating all these little weak valley schools. Its cute because you guys actually think you could beat us. The coaching will fall through just you watch. So good luck to your team in D-13 or whatever you guys are.

Loera and Teter are two dedicated and talented individuals. Loera most definitely is not going to transfer to st. paul, although his older brother achieved some mild success in the swordsmen program. Amat is incredibly talented, and their schedule was grueling this past year. Of course they're getting hyped, its the off season, but a new year nonetheless, why would they not be looking forward to getting stronger and preparing for next season? The program should not be bombarded with record predictions or anything of that nature. In my eyes, the kids are entirely sick of losing, and they really can't wait to prove to themselves that they can do a lot better. Amat will definitely be a team to look out for next season. I'd like to see West covina, south hills, or diamond ranch play teams like notre dame, crespi, and orange lutheran. The game would undoubtedly be a laughing manner.
Amat09,
Haven't you learned about karma in your ancient history class? I think that is really embarassing and a shame that an adolescent chooses to behave in such a manner that only reinforces the negatives and problems at Bishop Amat. Please listen closely to Joe Amat because your only real issue should be with yourself and each other not with meaningless lesser opponents and teams in our Valley. As straightforward and as simple as I can state for you ACTIONS speak louder than words! Bishop Amat does not need anymore negative press and you better not be a reflection of your coaches so hopefully they read your comments and ask the team to stop posting! Good luck in the offseason, get bigger, stronger, and faster, and the Valley really does want/need you to be successful so do your talking on the field before you make matters worse and its too late...
You know Bill, I'm as big a fan of W's as the next guy but someone using your line of reasoning would consider Lugo or La Puente or Duarte or Baldwin Park better teams than Bishop Amat last year since all had twice as many wins last season. While I respect your choice to think that way, I choose not to since I know which team is better.
It may be that going 7-0 against teams from the V V and Mission Valley might help with recruiting, I'll take your word on it. I can assure you it won't help prepare to play Notre Dame, Crespi, and Loyola.
To your point about the Husky program I agree wholeheartedly. HS kids think only about the score and have little appreciation for whether they got a win against Servite or the Sherman Indian School. It is up to the Coaches and AD's to build schedules that will test and prepare them for league play and hopefully beyond.
Hope you feel better soon.
09 pup,
Certainly NOT the time to talk smack. Let your game do the talking - then we'll have something to talk about...THAT"S the way it was done when we WERE good. Let's get back there first before popping off! Generally, it comes back to haunt you.
I would jsut like to say to those people trying to ba on amat is come and play us. If you have soooo much confidence in your team talk to your coach, step up to the plate I know for a fact Charter Oak doesnt want us cuz we whooped them up and down left and right. Glendora haha the upcoming years seniors beat these guys 35-0 ther freshmen so yea. West Covina? thats a joke really it is. And south hills. If they are soo good and soo confident then step up to the plate. Amat has no problem whooping on these cheap schools. But since none of these cheap schools want any of us Amat could only face schools to make them better. You just watch with the returners comnig back to this team they will be good. And trust me I knw what is gonig on in this program and no transfers are occurring. Everyone who placed in first or second team are staying. Everyone from the defense is returning. This next year is going to be the year to be a Amat.
Don,
If Amat wants to start winning again lower the bar like the other local teams do. The only way to get the program back on track is playing teams you can beat build up your record, make the playoffs and recruit more local talent. I get sick of people using the difficulty of schedules as a barometer. W/L record is the way to do it. If Amat can't beat the big boys, which it seems they can't, then play someone you can beat. Amat fans have to be sick of the mediocrity and waiting for the program to turn around. Bishop Amat will continue to struggle until they adjust their schedule. Its like the pro teams that have a 5 year plan. Build from the ground up!
As far as South Hills goes I think their program is a great program to examine. Right now their program is on par with CO, Los Altos because of the their success. Do you think the kids on these teams really care about the strength of schedule? Hell no! They want to win and win championships. They are in a lower Division but Bogan is smart enough to know how to build a successful program. I think other schools would do well to follow a program like his and use it as a model.
South Hills ain't Amat, nor is Los Altos or Charter Oak and they will never be. Yet people are happy holding up the Lancer's success, or lack of it, in comparison with other nearby schools. We go through this malarkey a couple times each year and it never fails to amaze me the number of people willing to compare Pippins and Pomegranates.
Bishop Amat played a schedule against opponents with a cumulative record of 86-35-1; they play St. Paul, Alemany, Los Osos, Hart, Rancho Cucamonga, Carson and Orange Lutheran in non-league play and folks say at 2-5 they suck. And then, they fail to beat Crespi, who whipped four or five of the best teams in the state. And it's FIRE THE COACH, IT”S HIS FAULT!
Amat plays a schedule against the best teams in the Section and the other successful programs in the valley play a couple of tiers below that. Only Glendora plays a schedule that even touches Bishop Amat. Add up the toughest opponents between C O, South Hills, Los Altos, Wilson, WesCo, Bonita and all the rest and you still don't have ten teams tougher than those faced by Amat.
While I have no kids in the Amat program, I have followed them since the early 70's and can tell you the Lancer faithful are happy with nothing less than a deep run into the Division 1 (Pac 5 for those playing at home) playoffs and expect a title or two every decade. Period.
Try as I might, I can't see anything wrong with a program like that in our backyard.
Bracketology,
A few things to keep in mind. I am a HUGE SGV fan and a big supporter of Bogan and what he has done at their level at SH, I do root for our teams when we play outside of the valley. So I am far from an amat myopic honk and far more of a realist. Here are some realities.
I said at "their level" for a reason. And that is because we cannot ever compare apples to oranges. Their is no way to compare an amat 3-7 to a SH - . They play different schedules. The only way to compare is head-to-head, and if you want to stretch it you might venture into the world of comparative scores - although the "transitive property" doesn't work in sports so much. If it did the only common denominator is Rancho Cucomonga had similar score against the Huskies and teh lancers. Does that say anything? Maybe - maybe not. The reality is that since 05'06 (not that long ago) no valley school has stepped up to schedule the lancers. Next year may be different. That season (a *non-playoff year* for the lancers) some teams stepped up and amat beat Glendora, Charter Oak and Damien by a composite score of NINETY-SIX to SIXTEEN! Guess you chose NOT to renew those contracts?!? The prior year (only another .500 season for the lancers) it was only 90-40 against the same 3 teams. That year brings us to another of your points.
That season, (remember a sub-par .500 season) William Wagner of amat WAS the SGV Player of the YEAR. So YES, I do believe that Wells would have had just as good an opportunity to win POY had he been ALLOWED to stay. In fact, last spring before "the incident" he was touted as such on this very blog - while still a member of the "lowly lancers". And he most certainly would have received an opportunity at Villanova - and most probably would have had MORE options, being seen by FAR more college recruiters (you may forget - they come to watch the other teams too. Who do you think they come to see more? OLu or Fullerton? Hart or Claremont? Crespi or Walnut? Notre Dame or Nogales? Loyola...well, you get the idea! He would have performed against the highest level of competition thus removing any doubts that he could do so. Either way - free education , Villanova is a great school and props to Dorian. And it is fair that you claim him - that was somewhat tongue in cheek on my part. Although I wonder if he will also be like Chris Rix in 10 years who identifies far more with amat than he does with Santa Margarita.
The bottom line is that at amat the opportunities have always been great to play at the next level. Your question was about DI - but then you include schools like Oxy and Cal Lu. I didn't want to go sub-DI, so I intentionally left off

I'm sure there are more on the way. And I remember that we are only going back to 2000. You certainly don't want to continue comparing any further back than that!
Now the final, and most important reality to us is that we are NOT where we need to be. Admittedly, and maybe not brought to everyones attention on this blog by anyone else anymore often than me. But I know where we can be, and we all know (if we are honest with ourselves) how to get there. Whether or not the school has the courage and desire to get back there remains to be seen.
Best of luck to the Huskies too. We were rooting for you in the post-season. And I hardly remember anybody "crying" on this blog during the playoffs. If you go back - quite the contrary. It was time to talk about those still competing. If you check the archives 98.734% (ok- I made that figure up!:?) of the amat posts were in *response* to someone who brought us into the conversation. Just like a court of law - once you open the door...
What I meant to say Joe Amat is that Dorian Wells would not have been the SGV Tribune Player of the Year had he played at Amat...I don't think you can dispute that...and he probably doesn't get his offer from Villanova if he played at Amat too.
Just an observation...nothing more, nothing less.
OK Joe Amat...that is an impressive list -- and it should be coming from a Pac-5 school. Here is what the "SH Reserach" has come up with...remember were just taking it back to 2000

For a "Mid-Major" school, 12 players is not bad. Oh and in case you are wondering, we will count Dorian Wells as ours for one real simple reason , on his biography of National Letter of Intent Day, it will say that Dorian Wells is a graduate of South Hills High School. Just like in the Profile for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune Player of the Year, it stated clearly that Dorian Wells played for South Hills HS.
Like I mentioned, kudos has to go out to Los Altos, Charter Oak, Damien (who has a kid that will be signing on LOI day) West Covina and others for continually getting their kids out and playing college football. But SH does go the extra yard to make sure they have a opportunity to play at the D-1 when they have finish their careers at SH.
And I will make this one rather interesting observation, Dorian Wells in the SGV Tribune Player of the Year if he had stayed at Bishop Amat.
Good luck next season, Joe Amat, hopefully your Lancers will be making the playoffs and not be home crying on this blog....
What are the chances la puente would have another 7-3 season???hahahah!
Ummm OK
Yeah tough schedual, but if you were really worth your salt you would have prevailed as the Amat teams did in the past. South Hills, Charter Oak, Glendora All good teams Do you think you could hang with them with todays talent. It was nice of you to send Wells to SH I'm sure they were glad to have him. Last time I checked SH though they had plenty of talent. And, CO looks good for next year also. I'm sure Bogan or Farrar would like a shot at Amat. Now you shut up
Patience Amat fans. Rome wasn't built in a day. Your program will be slow to growth this next year even with the quality athletes you claim. The PAC has an interesting way of making simple losses look like victories. What you miss is history. It is time to create what people love to read about and tabulate. Reality is you all know what needs to be done to unite.
I hear a few Amat baseball players will be playing football for their Senior years. Anyone know who they might be?
Is saying you are the original blue and gold something to brag about? lol I mean seriously.
I read very well and I comprehend your anger very well. At the end of the year is what counts and when the Lancers are 5-5 then I will laugh and remember this conversation. If Fred wants to put his foot in his mouth by ranking the Puke and Gold number 1 that's his mistake.
Hey Blue congrats on that 3-7 team. You and the rest of the Amat faithful have a lot to be proud of (eyeroll). The people who should be blogging are the successfully teams like CO,South Hills and Los Altos who actually win titles. Can someone from the Amat program remind me the last time the Lancers won a CIF title? Been that long huh?
Bracketology,
Got your research right here. And I'll betcha a dollar that I'm missing at least a few. I'm sure that I'll get some help from others. This list doesn't include others that are on scholarship at NAIA or DII schools like Central Oklahoma or St Mary's, that also tout former lancers on their roster.

Do we get 3/4 that credit? At least 1/2?
Anti-Amat bloggers,
Get used to this, Amat fan will run it's football talk all the way until the season starts again. We get all this attention based on being the true D1 team of the SGV. When and if someday your team can step up to play D1 ball then come in and bash AMAT. We are not going away we are die hard football fans ans support our team all the way...
one thing is for sure in the san gabriel valley , it SOUTH HILLS FOOTBALL !
I AM THE ORIGINAL BLEEDS BLUE AND GOLD...
Bill, Fred did the rankings, not me. May I suggest YOU take a reading comprehension course also so let me spell it out for you. We are not bragging about next season, we too have our doubts and our internal turmoils and we must face them as they come along. If he rates us #1 in the VALLEY, which is what this is, so be it. It's what happens at the end of the season is what counts, we know that too so we have plenty of time.
Anyway, we already have our own blog, Fred just does us the favor of running it for us.
sd fans cry respect and ranking
coach Z to schedule tougher teams????
coach Z wants his team to lead league pack
coach Z under fan pressure refuses to play ghs???
eazy to understand why sd will never gain respect
Bleeds Blue and Gold
You are the fool. If Fred is ranking them number 1, lets assume he thinks they are going to make CIF playoff. Snowballs chance in hell of that happening. At least Glendora fans had something to talk about last year.
All these blog comments about a 3-7 team is boring. You and the rest of the Amat fans should start your own Amat website. I have a suggestion for you for a website name.
www.WeKissAmatButt.com That's the clean version by the way!!
The way Amat will return to it glory days is they need to start attracting the athletes it use to get( Daylon,Kory minor, ralph brown, donnie mcclesky, joey getheral, so on and so on). It starts with the coaching staff , call it what you want "recruiting" but the coaches need to go out a find players that want to be lancers , there not just gonna show up on the door step oneday.. I have heard thru numores people that the coaches are absolutly lazy and have no desire to improve the program.. How is that schools like Crespi , St.Paul , Servite , Cantwell , Cathedral are attracting better athletes. We are loseing more athletes than we gain every year..
I heard this Amat stuff last year then the transfers started, mass exodus. If Verti is not replaced he needs to be a coach this offseason and ensure that his players stay focused. He needs make some sound decisions with his coaching staff. Get rid of a couple of his buddies and hire some coaches with some game time grit. The d-backs seemed to turn around when McCutcheon took them over and let Taylor work with the young freshman back and turn him into a force as he was in the 80's. Verti needs to swallow his pride and let Rix come in and work with the QB's as he has asked to. Heck his wife works for Amat so bring his knowledge in and utilize it. I would love to see more valley teams step up as it seems that W. Covina is trying to do and Diamond Ranch has done.
Put Coach Taylor in the weight room ,the current strengh coach does not have a clue.
To all Amat players, your weight room is probably one of the top in the valley, use it this year. This is a challenge from all the Alumni that have donated to the facility.
Verti, start making your contacts now with college recruiters. A highly recruited class will keep the players and bring in the players.
DR WILL CRUSH LA THIS YR

You Amat honks are worse than the Glendora Honks. You also remind me of Raiders fans who think their team is great but they suck on the field. Amat will be no better than a .500 team.
I am surprised Fred has them number 1. You give them too much credit because they play Division 1. It wont take them a week to two to drop from this spot. Mark my words.
Top 5 questiosn for the off-season:
5. How much better will Barbone get this off-season? the guy is a stud!
4. Will Gano find a way to reload and if not, will LA be able to compete?
3. Will Amat fans have a new head coach to complain about in 08?
2. Is Northview finally going to put that talent to use or are they going to underacheive again?
1. How will the new Wilson coach find a way to keep Gilmore in a Wildcat uniform.
Joe Amat - Love ur passion for Amat football. One could tell that you love the school and there is nothing wrong with that at all. But your last posted needs to be revisited.
There are a number of schools in the SGV that are getting their players in D-1 school and are PLAYING. Walter Thurmond (West Covina) had a great game in he Sun Bowl and will mostly be playing on Sundays in a few years. Daniel Drayton (Los Altos) has been playing well for Oregon St and one's memory doesn't need to be rejoggled to far to remember the Shaun Cody was a great player that didn't play at Amat.
Aaron Perez (Charter Oak)had a great game in the Las Vegas bowl and teammate Will Harris will have playing next year at USC.
But since 2000, there has been no school that has produced more D-1 players than South Hills. Do the research. Since 2000, SH averages two D-1 signees every year (and that will continue this year with Wells and Umodu).
In this just concluded bowl season, former SH players were on the roster of four different schools in four different games, Bryan Payton (Oregon St), Jeremy Payton (Arizona State), Tobi Umodu (UCLA) and Justin Hart (USC). No other football program in the SGV can play claim to that...again, do the research.
There is no disputing the fact Joe Amat that Bishop Amat gets players to D-1 schools, but SH does a pretty fair job in itself.
Good luck next season...
To add to my little rant below.... it is true what Fred said.... "What other area team had a bigger win on its resume in 2007?".... If you can come up with an answer let me know... On paper im not going to lie Amat Sucks... but to say that many valley teams can give us a run for our money is ludacris. It is hard to please everyone... you say we suck because of our record... but fail to acknowledge ou scheduale... then when we try to play local teams(like this past year for example)...no one wants to plays us, whats up with that??? It kinda puts us between a rock and a hard place. I give props to DRanch for Schedualing Amat next season, and To West Co for still being in negotiations for a game vs. AMAT. Yeah, were not the same as the glory days... but we may not be the undisputed best team in the Valley, but not many teams in the valley can say they can hang with us either.
To: A Fan at January 4, 2008 7:08 AM
True Statement... On Paper... Amat is a 500 team... actually worse if you look at this season, but to say that "There are plenty of teams in the valley who could give you a run for your money" is just not right. How about we recap some of Amat's games... Orange Lutheran... Lost 2-0 in the Pac-5 Semis to Eventual Champion LB Poly... Hart.... Lost in the Championship game of the Northern division to eventual Division III state champ St. Bonni... Carson... Lost in the City Championship Game to Birmingham... A Victory vs. St. Paul... the eventual Western Division Champs.... Crespi... Lost in the PAc-5 Championship Game to LB Poly... And SO Norte Dame... who did not make that much noise, but Had three all americans on their squad... So dont come with this bs anymore, I would like to see any valley team with this scheduale and say they would still go better than 500...Understand this... There may be a few SH, Co and maybe Glendora who can give Amat a game, but ask Glendora and Co fans how it was playing Amat a few years back... The game speed is so different.... judt shut up
Arceo from SaintPaul!
Amat Amat Amat My gosh isnt there another program in the valley? You people from Amat think your the greatest thing since sliced cheeze. Maybe you are coming back but its gonna be a long tough road. Your days of glory are gone at least for awhile. Your gold A doesnt shine as bright as it used to. There are plenty of teams in the valley who could give you a run for your money. Your a 500 team now deal with it.
nogales may need a little help, but i look for it to go back to its glory days (eg late 80's early 90s)
not next year, i know that, but it will eventually
(think domio theory...they had an up, now they are on a down, which means the only way is up again...)
any running backs holla at nogales!!

+1 on the "way to goes" for the Kansas/Amat Boys.
Isn't there a "Jayhawk/Swordsmen" connection too?
Congrats to big Cesar Rodriguez, and his "little" bro Jose who has a good chance to step into a starting spot on the line for the Jayhawks next year. Both are Orange Bowl Champions!
Bottom line... even with our "troubles" no one in the SGV sends as many players to DI programs as amat.
Fellow lancers may be interested in some of Cesar's quotes from the Orange Bowl media day.
OFFENSIVE TACKLE CESAR RODRIGUEZ:
On the excitement of going to the Orange Bowl:
“We’re really excited. When we were watching the bowl selection show and found out, everybody just jumped out of their seats. Most people haven’t expected this from a Kansas football team. Most people thought our basketball team was pretty good but nobody expected us to be here.”
On the experience of being in South Florida:
“A lot of the guys are from the Midwest, and they’re just looking in awe at the beach and the people here and how it’s so warm. It’s been great weather.”
On how the Hokies stack up with their Big 12 opponents:
“They’re one of the best teams we’ve played all year. Physically, they’re one of the better defenses we’ll play. They’re big. They’re fast. They’re strong. They play great TEAM defense. They have a bunch of stars on their team, but they all play together really well.”
On whether the team needs to make a statement in this game to validate their season:
“We never look at what the people say. We’ve always known that we’re pretty good. What other people say we’ve used as motivation for us to prove people wrong, but, we already knew when we came into the season that we were going to be pretty good. We’ve never really let it get to us at all.”
On Mark Mangino:
“He’s the reason we’ve been so good. He’s done a great job coaching. When he recruited me we were 2-10. Going from 2-10 to 11-1 is all because of him. He’s brought in a great coaching staff and they’ve done a great job.”
sd #1 HANDS DOWN 23 RETURNERS NO ONE WILL BEAT THEM CANT WAIT TILL THEY SMASH ON LOS ALTOS
if there is a game between amat and west covina, then thats the game to watch since i know many students transferring to west covina next year...
Fred are you kidding me amat, dude I wanted to believe you had more than that aram guy but you are just as much of a airhead as he is where in the world does this paper get there writers from the penny saver.
Cesar Rodriguez #65 in the Orange Bowl. I remember him being a tall skinny lineman for Amat, look at him now, he looks beefy 6'6" 285 lbs.
Go Amat!
Go Jayhawks!
it was 7 to 3 a close game but they are about equal teams i would think but amat might be a lil bigger in size
DHS,
What was the score for that freshman game?
Fred is right about Amat football next season. They have a great skilled group coming back and not to mention 9 out of 11 starting defensive returners. They have great depth defensively, especially with their big men up front:Paul Osunwa,Joe G.,Kane, Teter, Creager, Loera. They have a set core of linebackers with Prieto, Seals, Maffie, and Bowens. Then DB's are deep: Sheldon Price(1st Team), Justin Gener(2nd Team), Darian Johnson, Daoud Ibrahim, and Deshawn Gaisie all coming back. Offensively they will put it together with Lenhart at QB, Prieto, Seals, Gaisie, and Johnson all at RB, then Bowens, Jerry McClanahan, Seals, Price, Tierney, and Maffie all at WR. Then they have a strong core for line with Teter, Creager, and Loera pathing the way. So in my eyes Amat looks strong for next year, now the next step is to take it to the field,
Take a look at that lardass in the above picture. Number 62, lol
longas
how can you leave out damien out of the top 10???? you have amat #1 but damien beet amat during their freshman year i know its freshman but still they have to be ranked in the top 5 butthey will prove it next year.

There is some truth and some rumor as to who will be transferring into Amat from the local schools. Rumor has it that with the talented crop that Amat is bringing back that others are considering coming to Amat to play , from , again Chino Hills, West Covina, Los Altos, Baldwin Park and a couple from St. Paul. also some LA city football players from Garfield, and LA Wilson are considering coming out to play Amat CIF football...Players and parents know this is the year to jump into the mix at Amat.. the tide is turning now. Most haters do not like it but it is turning around over there at Amat with Verti and now players are asking about playing there. This was going to happen sooner or later. those wins over St. Paul and Loyola towards the tail end of the season brought some intrest from players from other schools.
Don't talk COH Dlile down as 2 returning 1st team all Miramont D-line Evan Williams & Tyler Peri will reek havoc on QBZ and running backs
Amat is playing Diamond Ranch and I know they were working on West Covina too, but not sure if that game was finalized.
I AM THE ORIGINAL BLEEDS BLUE AND GOLD...
CO and SGV, you ignorant fools. Where do you see ANYONE talking about going to CIF on this thread? Try taking a reading comprehension class again.
If anything there is hope but there is plenty of doubt because right now, that's all we got for the time being. In the meantime, try posting something relevant not your mindless rant.
Much to my dismay, but I just don't see Amat doing their thing this year in the vaunted pac5. They just don't have the horses to compete with the big dogs. All the names Fred mentioned are great, but not enough to compete in Pac5. yeah you can whip LA, DR, SH, CO and all the local talent. But it doesn't mean a darn thing if you can't qualify for the playoffs? Amat need more bigger, meaner and aggressive animals to play for them.... like those crazy Tongans and Samoans that LB Poly and Orange lutheran recruits.
You can't count Los Altos out yet. Wait till Gano recruitment company works their double overtime and steal more illegal transfers from Amat, Wilson, La Puente and elsewhere.
Fred,
It is rumored that Amat is scheduled to play West Co and DRanch.... any truth to that??? Those will be interesting games to say the least.
I am an amat fan but I honestly do not see it happening next year for them. They are going to be very talented at the skill position... I will definetly not argue with that... and Jay Anderson, #5, the frosh RB is the real deal, but I dont think they are gong to have the line next year. With the size of Crespi, Loyola, Norte Dame, and Orange Lutheran, I just so do not see it happening. Teter and Loera are talented, but they are not even 6ft. Arnold... well he is not that coordinated, Hawskins is not 285... try 300+, and unless he makes some changes he will not start next year. On the DLINE joe Guerrero is very athletic and talented. but again no size. Daniel Kane, well... his stregnth is amazing... he will control the middle, but There is Nothing Else. I honestly believed this season that the probleas not with Verti. but after the ND game and asked 4 a running clock he has no back bone.
Notes on Amat
It's funny how so many people are so hyped up on next year, yet seem to forget that last years, underachieving team will be the same one out on that field next year.
I have to say that I hate to agree with jerk-off's like "CO" here but, he is quite correct here in that we have to wait and see just what we have, before we start to run out and buy the champange bottles.
You know, last year, I attended quite a few JV and Freshmen games along with most of the Varsity games that Amat played. The problem was the talent level. Amat's teams will not match up at with Notre Dames squad, and maybe, just maybe it hover's a few levels below Crespi's talent.
For example, Crespi has a monster running back that played freshman last year, and he will certianly make an impact next time arround. You know, Verti sent some of the Varsity kids down in one of those two JV games last year (against ND or Crespi, dont remember which one it was) in order to even it up a bit, but we still ended up getting hammered. Imagine that ?
So, why ia all this so significant ? Because you have to end up at least second in league to qualify for the playoffs. Amat will win a lot more games than last year (out side of league play of course), but they probably won't qualify for the playoffs because of the competition that they have to play against.
Keep in mind however that I do agree with what people on this blogg have said about changing coaches, but it wont happen next year.
Still, if Amat doses not get over 500 next year, then I can see a whole lot of folks banging on the monseniors door to do something.
BTW, There were two freshman playes on last years Amat team who played very well. One guy was Anderson, and the other, I can't remember his name right now, but they both played exceptionaly well last year. These two are sure fire quality athelets. Maybe they will make an impact next time arround.
Bishop Amat has a tremondus freshman runningback #5 that i think will make a major impact next year on the varsity , hope he sticks around..
Amats frosh back on the move. There will be about 8 transfers leaving Amat!
did you know that many amat players are transferring to WC?
what about nogales they r returning many players their o-lline is comin back besides the center their defense is stout nd set nogales is up there regardless wat u say

Funny how the AMAT honkers are back after being so silent over the last year!
Please! Same old crap, we're the best in the SGV. Lets wait for the BB crap soon in D5 LOL
Trojan Man at January 3, 2008 9:29 AM
You're very wrong for saying UCLA or any team won't compete with USC. Do you think other teams this year didn't compete with USC this year?
What were you saying when a 1-9 team beat USC?
Dude, any given Sunday!
The parity will come to a close. The Stanford coach, now UCLA coach and many more are right on USC butt... They'll get there guys. Wait till Gerhart, (you know the leading HS rusher in CA gets healthy), things are going to change.. Get ready, its going to be alot harder for the trojans...
Blue and the rest of Amat,
The season is over and you guys are talking like your going to the CIF playoffs.
Sounds like RAIDERFANS, I mean AMATFANS.
Fred has just given you another opportunity to brag about yourselves.
Your pathetic program that can't keep players.
You can't keep everyone happy and the kids will leave.
I don't care where they go along it's not at SNOBLAND!
SH,WC,SD,LA,CO,DR,SE,BONITA,WILSON,GLENDORA,ARROYO
etc.
REMEMBER AT THESE SCHOOLS YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY TO PLAY!
WATCH WHO YOU CALL SLIMELAND!
I AM THE ORIGINAL BLEEDS BLUE AND GOLD...
You're right Blue, the other players you mentioned have game except for Hoskins who needs to drop some weight. He's bottom heavy and not mobile. May be good for a goal line situation but as of right now not much as a regular.
As for Loera and Teter, the parents are tight but just don't see a transfer happening. I think they are committed for the long haul. Besides if Loera were to go, his option would be St. Paul and I don't know where Teter would go besides La Puente unless he took off to Slimeland also. i just don't see it.
Reguarding Amat:
Yes we do return a great core of players and there are others that were not mentioned that will play a big role in Amats success next year. Deshawn Gaise, Darien Johnson, Jonathan Maffie,Danny Kane, Gabriel Flores, Their line will be big once again with 6'4" 265 Jared Arnold and 6'1" 285 Michael Hoskins. The only rumors coming out of Amat is Jason Teter and Dominic Loera two very good O-Lineman may transfer but that is all speculation. Coach Verti is pumped about this new team for next year and this is the year Amat comes out banging. Yes I believe there is truth to the assistant coaching not being up to snuff but it is what it is that is Verti's crew and he will keep them. Look for Amat to have a great season next year barring no major injuries, if you take the players Fred mentioned along with the the players I have posted this is a very strong team that would whip ass on any the locals, see this is why Los Altos does not want to schedule a game, they will be on a huge decline next year and will miss the playoffs. if that game was scheduled like everyone wanted for this coming year it would be a total mismatch.....this is why Amat is Amat and the rest of the SGV play where they play. I will admit Amat will not win a championship next year but they will compete in that D1 level where all the rest of the SGV does not play.
New Approach ;
Maybe 7 wins .What did Neuheisel do in the NFL , not much , if I remember correctly Baltimore had the WORST offense . He will get a few recruits , his name & claim to fame Rose Bowl win will drag a few players along with Walkers help. I hate to admit a few more guys WILL go to UCLA but I HIGHLY DOUBT UCLA will compete with the Trojans .He is FORTUNATE to have retained Walker , with out him , he would have had a MOUNTAIN to climb , now maybe a few hills .

Hate to bust your bubble, but Neuheisel will win more than just a few!
Best of Luck to Walker ...
He will need it,UCLA was pretty bad this season . Getting rid of Dorrell was THE WORST thing for Trojan fans , Neuheisel will win a few , NOT AGAINST The Mighty Men of Troy though .

You also forgot Ganesha.
Just to let people know both SEM's Freshman and Jv Teams won league championships so the future is lookin real good for them
Here's some great news on the UCLA front
Walker staying
UCLA just released this - DeWayne Walker is staying as UCLA's defensive coordinator.
UCLA head football coach Rick Neuheisel is announcing that DeWayne Walker
has agreed to be a part of Coach Neuheisel's first UCLA staff as defensive
coordinator.
In addition, defensive line coach Todd Howard and linebackers coach Chuck
Bullough will continue in their current positions.
Other staff decisions have yet to be made.
Congrats to Northview for continuing to upgrade there pre-season contracts. I can only hope teams like San Dimas and SEM do whatever they can to schedule solid non-league games not only to demonstrate what their studs can do but to improve their position for the post-season seedings.
Amat will also be better next year, (provided that bus from Chino Hills remains on time), as will the Huskies, Chargers, and Diamond Ranch who will no doubt will begin the season with impeccable paper work.
You may want to do a little more homework on Bonita however. I think Schmitt graduates this year; Hubbard is as tough as they come but really needs ankle and shoulder rehab and if Jio Mier plays football as a senior I'll buy you all a burger at the smudge pot game. Gelalich was the best lightweight MLB in the Miramonte this year and Terry Paredez is as good of a precision passer as there is in the valley although I think Podley would like him a little bigger, stronger, and faster.
The biggest moves in next year's Division finishes will be West Covina (up) and Glendora (down). The Dog's show up reloaded with green talent; the big worry out on Cameron Avenue will be whether Jacob Shirley wants to focus on his baseball. Glendora has a lot of hosses to replace in a very tough league.
Football threads in January, I love it.
Just wanted to congratulate West Covina's Walter Thurmond for a fine finish to a fine year in the Pac Ten, He had another interception and returned it for a TD. in the Sun Bowl vs S.Florida, that gives him 4 picks for the year 1 returned for a TD and a fumble returned for a TD. this is in addition to leading his team in solo tackles and
the pac ten in batted down passes [as of week 8]
He was also a college all american honorable mention this year as a sophmore.
WELL , although I stand & agree with most decesions made by the LA Lakers , The SHORT SHORTS WERE AWFUL on Sunday . Kind of like the way they played , AWFUL . Kobe will not have back to back games like that ! Boston played well against a Lakers team that was NOT the same team they were MOST of December. Let's hope Phil & Kobe rally the troops & reel off some more wins , still A LONG WAY TO GO !
I LOVE LA
And the SGV too ...

I AM THE ORIGINAL BLEEDS BLUE AND GOLD...
Fred, I hope you are right. I don't anticipate a mass exodus like last year but you never know. As far as I'm concerned, of all the people we lost, Wells, McBride, and Bonilla were the ones that hurt the most. Sermons and Adams were right behind them and eveyone else was baggage.
I don't know what players from JV will make an impact next year and I know of only 1 Freshman running back who should make the step up.
I still say that changes have to be made in the staff level because every indication is that Verti will be back. I can live with it as long as
some of the assistants are moved out and some new ones brought back in.
The student is only as good as the teacher and we need some new teachers.
we should discuss what is at hand... its hoops season
we should talk hoops...
say, for example, should we bring back short shorts like the lakers tried to do sunday..funny ish i say...
i honestly dont think it looks right on todays nbaplayers cuz thery're bigger and buffer...
todays high school players? that is something that may be interesting...
Fred, great way to start off the new year! I'm excited about the '08 season and every football fan in the SGV should be too. So much talent coming back for the new season.
Wihtout a doubt, the Miramonte League will be a monster league. DRanch, CO, and Bonita have great coaching and have the talent returning.
The Valle Vista League will be a tight race between Northview an SD, with BP and Covina always having a 'say' in the league title.
South El Monte is head and shoulders above the rest in the Mission Valley League.
Still a long ways away. Let's start the season now!
Will this be the Year of the Lancers return to GREATNESS in the SGV . I REALLY hope so , maybe we can quite down those little OC girls .I do think things can only get better . Can not wait until football comes back , although the hands are going to be full , my wife & I are expecting child number two here in the next few weeks , number three for me . Until football comes back , I'll be rooting for USC Basketball & of course LAKERS Basketball . I hope all had a wonderful holiday season ...

Joe Amat,
It did say DL, he changed it.
Fred,
Good job. With a 16 team tournament the lancers, even at 3-7, would have been a good bet for the final four - and maybe more. But everyone knows how I feel - we've got bigger fish to fry and amat's aspirations need to be higher than that.
and Insider - Fred wrote "...soon to be seniors Brent Seals (LB) and Sheldon Price (DB) - both Serra League first team selections...."
I'm not sure what you read?
Amat will be back next year. Fred, Brent Seals is not a d-lineman, he is a linebacker/runningback like Prieto.
