Football: Coaching search still on at Bishop Amat, Wilson

Schools don't normally discuss who has or hasn't applied for head coaching gigs, but several reliable sources have discussed a few possibilities with me.

Bishop Amat: From very credible sources, I've learned that Diamond Ranch's Roddy Layton and Wilson High offensive coordinator Greg Willig have applied and are being considered. I Also heard that former Amat great John Jackson (also Fox Sports broadcaster) and assistant coach Daylon McCutcheon are on the panel search for Amat's next coach. If this is true, it sure helps Layton's chances. Another very credible candidate is believed to be former Amat assistant coach John Aguirre, who currently works for CIF. Aguirre ran a successful city-championship winning team at Carson, and has deep Amat connections. Another rumor that I've heard is that Kory Minor may return and be part of the coaching staff. Stay tuned!

Wilson High: I've heard that Mike DiFiori, yup, the former Bishop Amat coach, has thrown his name in the hat. I've heard this from two good sources, so we'll see.

Greg Gano Update: I just got off the phone with Los Altos coach Greg Gano, who said he has not applied for any current opening and is staying at Los Altos.

Hagerty is their man. It is a lock.

OK here it is. 14 applicants. Aguirre and Hagerty are the top 2. A decision will be announced before the 9th. This is on the fast track so expect an answer within a week. Both candidates are well qualified and will bring some much needed changes to Amat.

Fred doesn't respond anymore because he got called to the carpet on his shoddy reporting and rumor spreading on this whole Bishop Amat coaching situation. Fred realizes he is just a guy who initiates and spreads rumors, 1/2 truths, and inuendo.

OK already the application process is officially closed. How many applicants and are there any surprises? Don't tell me Msgr. Carroll will be conducting the interviews himself....

Fred, Will you be covering Amat's 50TH Anniversary Salute to Athletic Excellence‏ on Saturday, February 9, 2008? I know Hagetry and Agurrie will be attending. I wonder if they'll announce the New Head Football Coach at the event. It should be interesting.

umm ok,
I believe this time Mnsgr. will make the proper business decision which would be to hire a top notch coach which in turn means a beeter product on the field and maybe getting to CIF. Better product means filling empty seats, selling more product at games which all mean more money for the school. Now if he is a business guy like you state wouldn't it benefit him to go for the best to improve one of his best products he has in his portfolio. I am quite sure that the loss of some revenue these past seasons is beginning to hurt Msngr where he feels it the most .

Umm ok... Where are you getting your information? You have no clue whats going on. There is a panel, McCutcheon and Jackson are both on it. They start interviewing this week. Agurrie and Hagerty are front runners. Zamano(DC) has applied. Leyton dropped out last week. Msgr. Carol does have the last say in who's hired though. So aho know's.

Fred,

How reliable are these sources tht you speak Of? There is no panel for this years coaching search at Amat. All of the coaching search is being conducted by... (unfortunately) Msgr. Carol. He has taken it upon himeself to lead and conduct, and have total say in filling the vacancy. Sorry no John Jackson or Daylon McCutheon ony any panel. I love the Amat program, but Im having my personal doubts in the direction that this program is going, because Msgr. is a "business guy" not a football guy. Hew will take the cheapest coach.

Hey Facts...it took you a while to respond but in the end you did not disappoint.

Read the blog a...g...a...i....n......s......l...o....w.....l.....y......

You caled Fred a rumor "monger"....it was a joke!

I know you feel pretty stupid right about now but really no one noticed you stepped in your own doodoo. Monger...m..o...n...g...e....r as in MONGER as in similar names ....as in ...you getting the picture yet? lol

I even asked Fred "I wonder how long it's going to take Facts to "read between the lines"...and like champion you came thru with flying colors!

Thanks for the entertainment. By the way...you're still at 3rd grade Reading Comprehension.....and no Coach Comprehension didn't apply for the Amat job either but Coach DOO DOO did.

I'm here all week! LMAO!!!!!!

Mongerlicious

Are you kidding - No where did I say Monger was applying for the job - your 3rd grade education is catching up with you. What it said was is that Fred is a "rumor monger" - someone who spreads rumors without validation - get a clue.

Again unless you have spoken directly to Msgr Carroll or Merritt Hemenway then you know nothing of the process and what is happening.

nobleguy,

it is Karl Dorrell....Verti could not coach Rincon.

Nogales' job is open too, and I heard that they have an ex-ucla player on tap. do you think it could be Verti?

Gee Joe as Bogart said in Casablanca..."This could be the start of a great relationship!" Yes I talked to him recently and all he said was what everyone already knew..."EVERYONE WANTS AGUIRRE" Well my brother lives 20 minutes from school and I have another brother with 2 kids there so go figure. Spooner and Canales are old friends. I know Spooner has a good heart and loves that school even though he bleeds Blue and Black...same as I do. Canales is a company guy to his credit. He's dug in and has family and a career there at Amat so I respect that. Even though he's a Cantwell Alum like Ray Lugo...another former adversary since elementary school.

JOE, How many players do you think a Coach like Aguirre brings? I know players will follow my brother, like I said parents love HIM.

One more thing... How many players is Amat away from being back? Is it size? Speed? Technique? or Schemes? That's missing. From what I saw in Mc Bride ..it ain't muscle and heart! That kid single handedly kicked the CRAP out of Damien and had McMahon's helmet flying off at least 3 times after montrous collisons. AND I MEAN MONSTROUS! No offense Ryan but you have to admit Mc Bride was on a mission that night. I liked Verti but DEFENSE wins games and the Defense never stepped up from what I saw. And that's on the kids and coaches collectively.

What's Verti going to do? I'd like to see him take on the Freshmen team and start a flood of Varsity level techniques early on and see more early talent given the schedule Amat plays. Bring them up early but bring them up Varsity ready.

I played QB for Aguirre as a freshmen and lost a heartbreaker against Notre Dame @ Notre Dame when I fumbled the hand off at the 2 yard line with 1:00 on the clock and no time outs on 2nd and goal. I wish I could have done what Mendrun did at Chino Hills but I sucked at QB. Two paases into the endzone, both dropped for TDs to win the game nd then the FUMBLE! That's when I realized that being a QB was tough.

Aguirre told me after the game I played great, I didn't. He told me he made the right decision to start me, the other QB was involved in a horrific accident the night before, but still it meant alot to me when he put his arm around me as a show of support. I was crying all the way to the bus. I should have snuck it over myself.

Years later my brother told me Coach Aguirre made him a professional in every sense of the word. It's in the preparartion and details. Preparation and details, Preaparation and details. He still has game plans from 20 years back...just to try and find his own tendencies.

Amat will bounce back when people know who's coaching there. Quality coaches go a long way. Aguirre at Damein and Damien is another story. But as my brother once said after seeing a stand around practice,,,'With this size, and their money and community...well it's a waste of talent. How do people put up with this?" Maybe someone smarter than me has that answer.

M&M,
You mean we could be sitting on the same side rooting for Coach C and my lancers?

That regime would certainly do wonders, that's for sure.

I know that $$$ has to be right for JA to come. Let's hope that MSGr and MHphd open up the checkbook to make something good happen.

Good Luck and we'll see how things turn out.

Mean machine. Did you have too many negative shower encounters with Burt Reynolds in prison or something? Spit it out man.

You sly devil duck lips. How did you know? I just saw that. Do we know each other?

Hey big brother that would be Boise State not Idaho State for Johnson.
Me personaly, I played at Oregon. It was fun. No, I am not a Damien Grad so get over it. BTW where did you play? I am sure it was a great experrience for you.
BTW the majority of the Catholic schools and many of the ones that pound on you ever year are wannabe all boys schools.
Crespi, Servite, Loyola, St. Francis.

If Coach Aguirre gets the job @ Amat there is alot of talk about his former assistants coming on board. Now what was the name of that great defensive coordinator and outstanding linebacker coach.....has a couple of Championship rings and 3 City Championship Games under his belt.......name's right on the tip of my tongue.....has college coaching experience, is well respected in coaching circles, players love playing for him .... parents love him....has connections to Division I programs....sent many former defensive players to Cal and USC....defensive schemes have beaten Amat before....can't seem to remember his name ...ummm...but I do remember this coach getting the brush off from a local Catholic program to help coach a talent rich "freshmen team" ....what the heck is his name? Oh well never mind...nothing solid ...YET! What was his name? Either way best of luck to Amat...My vote is for Coach Aguirre that way I get front row seats to the rebuilding process and get a free pass to my 4th Championship Game! Randy...you can come too. Boy if he's on the sideline at Amat next to Coach Aguirre next year won't that Caholic school and a couple of know it alls in green look pretty silly. Opps there I go being "mean" again. Hey a little levity never hurt anyone. Amat...help is on the WAY!!!!!!!

How can you forget Darryl Henley at UCLA and the Rams? Talk about someone who went the wrong way in life with the world at his feet.

Hey what about Nick Padilla, University of Cincinati!!!!!

Ian Johson, Idaho State.

Those are big names man!

Who cares about what Damien produces, they are the little wannabe all boys catholic school who plays nobody public schools. Come play with the big boys before you spout your duck lips. Big Brother Amat will always school you and so will little brother St. Paul. Ian Johson, big deal!

Sounds like good guidelines for everybody, right? My posts are not intended as slander.

Good luck.

Actually New York I appreciate you not getting defensive and being receptive to my comments because I was not trying to attack you but instead give you some friendly advice that matter of fact has nothing to do with your post because truth be told I do agree with what you said but many times you do post information about programs meaning players and coaches that is just inaccurate and some may be taking personally because they are false and even sometimes slanderous remarks. I guess what I am trying to say is think before you write and be certain your news is truth and not perception nothing more or less and no harm no foul!

What's false about my last statement? Nationally ranked teams need great talent alongside the great coach. You can still win CIF with less stars on the roster, as Amat did in 1995.

New York,

Once again thank you so much for your insightful comments. I look forward to your posts because you truly are qualified to give such knowledgeable "takes" because you understand so many programs between coaches and players. Thanks once again and I am anticipating your next one! NOT...I have talked to several walks of life lately who really wish they knew your identity because of your FALSE information. Do you homework and yes I do not apologize for what I have said but instead was waiting for the next time you posted so I could tell you the honest to God truth!

For Amat football to get back to its nationally ranked glory days it needs to attract some star athletes, not just D-1 recruits, but the cream of the D-1 recruits. The team that was ranked at the top of the nation until losing to Mater Dei in 1994 had among others:

Minor (Sr.)- Notre Dame
McCutcheon (Sr.) - USC
Huma (Sr.) - UCLA
Brown (Jr.) - Nebraska

Remember, Nebraska and Notre Dame were real good back then too. Unfortunately, we could comb through the entire valley and not come up with four kids with those type of credentials. The new coach's success at restoring Amat's status nationally will ultimately be limited by the talent pool.

Yeah I agree, name the Head Coach now. The sooner the better, a big name will help get some big ass samoan transfers or some big beefy white boys like Pollak on the team, or some speedy Afro Americans from Monrovia/Pasadena area. I know most Samoans are mormons, most blacks are baptists, most white boys don't like church, but hey who cares, we will still take you.

Name the damn coach already. This needs to be done ASA-FN-P. Then the thread will come out about it here and then all the Amat nuckleheads will praise or bash the decision and we will get another round of Bishop Amat on this blog. Fred open up the SuperBowl pick topic this week leading into the game. If you are a bettor Take the Giants and the points. Patriots may win the game but they are not covering the spread of 13 points. Also bet the overs.

LA has produdced an SEC, WAC, Mountain West and a PAC-10 STANDOUT within the decade. you guys remember the Georgia Tech standout??

LA has produdced an SEC and a PAC-10 STANDOUT within the decade. you guys remember the Georgia Tech standout??

LA has produdced an SEC and a PAC-10 STAR within the decade. you guys remember the Georgia Tech standout??

dude! this doesn't matter...just go to LA for free! the next Hertel, Sproul, Smith, Aquino, DeSanti, Harwell, Cody, Rodriguez, McBride, Brown, Drayton, Benton, Lauter, etc. they're out there... is it YOU??? or your KID?? Gano and Fair are LEGEnDs

How is a guy that go KICKED OUT of Amat on the panel? Rix isnt an alumnus he graduated from Santa Margarita...

Amat isn't back. They will find a way to screw things up until this administration changes. I am looking forward to more whining from Amat fans from years to come.

With all this talk of the new coach and who he is going to be, I get this feeling Amat football is back and cannot wait to see this re-tooled team take the field next year. I am excited knowing Amat has learned from its mistake (not that Verti was bad he was just not ready) and are looking to bolster this team right away and not take the give me a couple of years to turn it around. I see instant results and the candidates all seem qualified to lead Amat. They may have different approches to the game and one may like the run where is the other may spread the field but all in all the next head coach will bring in some results that alumni , students, parents and especially players can be proud of to wear and cheer for that Blue and Gold team that will take the field next year. Game one at home is for sure a Amat crowd sellout. I am keeping my season ticket.

Agurre has done some work with Steve Clarkson, the QB specialist from Air7, who tutored Rix as he was developing. That connection makes sense, and remember - we have different eras of lancers involved in the search, so the camp will be split.

A tight race that the interview process will sort out, in order to bring the *best* candidate - I hope!

Anybody know if John Aguirre coached will Coach Voll at Carson or did he come in as an outsider?

I believe that former Amat QB Chris Rix is also on the panel with J.Jackson and McCutcheon...
I heard he is pushing for Aguirre...

AG,

I didn't intend to use that as any sort of slight to Aguirre at all. The ability to adapt to your talent and being innovative (which could also be perceived as "trendy") are two different things.

If you have had any lengthy conversations with both (and I have) you'd know that John is a little more conservative in his approach and will do a few things GREAT. Steve might prefer to throw the ball around a little more, be a bit creative and give other teams a bunch of things to worry about. Neither is wrong and simply meant to ppoint out differences.

Your point about "good ol' boys" is interesting and brings up a dynamic that was talked about a while ago. That term is usually perceived as negative, but in reality could just be another way of saying *loyal* to those around you. That might not be bad, assuming those that you are loyal to are also qualified.

The choice will have definitely have a large impact in how the rest of the staff is assembled. Hags staff might be filled with players/coaches from the '80s/very early '90s and look for some assistants to return - some who may have gone on as assistants and/or head coaches elsewhere. Aguirre's staff might be more what a number of bloggers have been talking about and include some former successful players from the late '90s with some of Aguirres' city section connections brought along.

Either way, both a serious upgrade and championship-type coaches that could put the program back on its' feet in due time

I think Aguirre is as innovative if not more innovative than any candidate. He has adapted to the talent wherever he has coached. He should be the new coach. And please tell me he will be taking on other positions. He is just what this program needs.

Hagerty is a part of the good ol boys network. We know how that works.

Facts,

In all seriousness, MSGr and MHphd are probably the least reliable sources involved.

Fact: In situations like this a *Coaching Search* is exactly what it says. amat is searching - not sitting around waiting for random applications to come across their desk.
Fact: In a *Coaching Search*, some candidates don't "apply" until *after* they have had conversations regarding the job, and some conversations are more serious than others.
Facts: Layton has had "discussions" regarding the job
Facts; Willig is tight with MSGr, who was the principal at St Paul when Willig was a player, and has had "discussions" regarding the job.
Fact: Aguirre and Hagerty are running 1-2 or 2-1 in the sweepstakes, and both would be great choices with successful backgrounds.
Thoughts:Aguirre might also fill the need (either immediately or in the near future for a strong & competent Athletic Director. Hags might come at a slightly cheaper price.
Aguirre is more "old school" and would bring back some old-time toughness while Hagerty is probably more innovative offensively. Aguirre might be more "businesslike" while Hags might have a little more "dynamic" personality.

Each have some great positives so I, and many others, hope that one of these two works out.

FACTS????

Are you kidding me ? WHEN DID MONGER GET INTO THIS?

LAST TIME HE COACHED HE HAD A DYNASTY AT CHINO HIGH SCHOOL BUT I'VE HEARD NOTHING ABOUT MONGER APPLYING FOR THE BISHOP AMAT MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL LANCER FOOTBALL TEAM ONLY DIVISION I HIGH SCHOOL IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY THAT CAN BEAT EVERY SAN GABRIEL VALLEY TEAM IN THEIR SLEEP AND PUT OUT THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF DIVISION I PLAYERS AND NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM PLAYERS IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY WITH A LIST THAT'S ONLY A COUPLE OF KEYSTROKES AWAY IF YOU DARE CHALLENGE THAT STAEMENT OF FACT? (THAT'S FOR YOU JOE AMAT)

WHEN THE HECK DID COACH MONGER APPLY FOR THE JOB?

Gee "FACTS"...where are you getting your information?

Okay Fred, I got your back....let's see how long it takes "facts" to read between the lines.

Sometimes I think Fred you must have the toughest job in America. You give people's kids attention and like spoiled rotten over bearing parents they hypesensitize EVERY comment....most of the time it's the truth.....and most of the time like Jack Nicholson tells it,

" They can't handle the truth!"

Last year Aram made it possible for bloggers to kill the messenger with impunity. This year you have been a class act and a seasoned vet. Education counts..OBVIOUSLY! (NO COMMENT)

Ever wonder what a room full of bloggers would look like? Bet if you put them all in a room and asked them to nominate the best players in the SGV you'd find that after about 10 minutes it would look like a LITTLE LEAGUE ALL STAR MEETING....votong for friends and family. Rose colored glasses have clearly been the eyes of choice.

The Amat job is another fiasco. Is it any wonder Verti resigned? Ask around or walk on Amat's campus and except for the occasional cross or statute it looks like Garfield High School and that's no slight at Garfield, just stating the facts. Homies don't you know me?

Maybe a new coach will help that school or maybe all it will bring is more misery but nothing short of a 3rd round exit will satisfy the "NATION". On the other hand 98% of the San Gabriel Valley could care less. Reminds me of a pretty girl with bad breathe and a foul mouth. The closer you get the more you want to pull away! Back in the safetY of your car as she walks away you still can't get over how good she looks, and them it hits you! THAT SMELL!

Is that a mongerlicious analysis or what?

Enjoy.

Yes the players are in the weight room working out during their P.E periods . While we do not have a head coach we still assistant coaches taking care of the program.

Fred,

Unless your "very credible sources" are Msgr Carroll or Merritt Hemenway - your sources are nothing. You are jsut as bad as everyone else who posts on these boards - a rumor monger.

GO LOS ALTOS!!

GO LOS ALTOS!!

We do not want Layton. I don't think he even lettered at USC.

Diamond Ranch,

Do you have the next George O'Leary

yesteryear,

Wrong John, but I am an alumni and avid Amat follower. I don't miss many games.

The test date is coming near, this weekend, and parents want to know who is going to coach next year so step it up. The decision needs to be in place by the date that the incoming freshman receive their scores and start making decisions.

Anyone, who is in the weight room, I know other schools are starting to work out on their own in the respected PE classes. Is this happening at AMAT, there should be a buzz around campus and the players need to start now for a big year.....

Blackbacker&Funny : Its Time For Your Afternoon Breastfeeding , Grow Up & Post Things That Are Not Hurtfull

Ya, I've seen Trevor woods before. He looks like Beetlejuice from Howard Stern!!

Haterade,

LOL....Trevor Woods is like 5'1" tall, he's not taking anyones position, or girl for that matter. He just gets a pat on the head!

Hey Trevor, Go fetch me some water!!!

50 YARD LINE,
Texas is huge on HS football as you can see (Friday night lights). Which leads me to believe that Amat maybe should open the door to a transplant from another State for their head coaching vacancy, not necessarily a Texas coach but if that is the case, ok, but to someone from the outside with a good track record in a HS football program and that no one knows. start clean and fresh. These names of the former Amat alum not to mention Rowdy Roddy as the replacement at Amat is kind of weak. Get us a coach that has had it with the grind of college coaching and wants to come back to HS, or even go after the Assistant head coach of Crespi. Forget the local SGV coaches, lets get a bonafide winner and place him at Amat.

john,
You graduated in 81

red ryder,

Spoon coached with Verti this past season which means he is gone, unless he wants to go down and help Parker again...Bassett wants him to come and coach the defense.

Fred, please stop with these accusations. No commitee to pick the next coach. Layton and Willig have not applied for the job. Please stop stirring the pot!!!!

just an observer

so if the recruiting is still ay los altos, and you dont see wilson getting over the hump, then explain how wilson beat los altos, and finally brought back the wheel. oh and the are is not known for talent tim gilmore, daniel bernal(who lead the league in rushing sophmore n jr year, and was second senior year because of a lingering hamstring injure) price wilks randal brown chappelle brown sean cody brigham harwell........all went to either los altos, or wilson in that not so talented area........

Blackbacker, why the rip on Trevor Woods? Did he start over you or did he take your girlfriend?

#1 Coaches who post on blogs

We now know that Layton reads these blogs and may have commented on them undo pseudo names.

#2 With his own words, he is acknowledging the fact that there was contact between him and Amat, not just McCutcheon. So I know that Hemingway and Carroll would not have talked to him so who does that leave. Maybe a certain AD whose name rhymes with Gonzo has been speaking to Layton on his own without the input of the higher ups.

To Whom it may concern:

We would like to endorse James Heggins as the next head coach at Bishop Amat.

Sincerely,

Serra league football Coaches.

LAYTON IS A FOOL AND AMAT HAS MORE CLASS THAN TO HIRE A SECOND CLASS COACH.

THIS GUY KNEW EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR TRANSFER LAST YEAR AND SCREWED IT UP FOR US AND THE ENTIRE TEAM. ANY COACH WHO DOESNT DOUBLE CHECK EVERYTHING AND FOLLOW UP ON EVEYTHING THAT AFFECTS HIS PROGRAM IS A COMPLETE MORON.

SOME OF THE SENIOR PARENTS KNOW THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT THIS GUY...

Blackbacker at January 23, 2008 7:52 PM

Yeah, the only one missing would be Obama.. LOL

I for one honestly believe that is Coach Layton posting a comment on this thread and what's remarkable is the only other coach who ever posted officially was Coach Quinley from Charter Oak so my questions are two 1. What is everyone's opinion of a Coach posting a comment on the blog and 2. Coach Layton what does this part of your post imply "I respect Bishop Amat and will let them choose what they want to go public with concerning this matter." Obviously, you know more than we do but for whatever reason are hesitate to tell us the truth and the facts to this entire process. What gives? I am calling you out because I feel us boosters have a right to know! What's up?

I hear Lawrence Phillips comes cheap now a days . Although still might be to expensive for Amat .

Fight On
TM

I heard the if James Heggins gets hired by Amat, and from what I'm hearing it's a done deal, he's got his staff together.

HC- J. Heggins
OC- D. Thomas
DC- W. Crutchfield
WB- Trevor Woods (Waterboy)

Keepin' it real!!

Well I just thought id chime in here all this gossip is getting kind of crazy.

First of all the Wilson job aint so hot, the area really isnt known for talent.

As long as Gano and crew are still at Los Altos there wont be a serious shot of Wilson getting over the hump.

I know there are a lot of dreamers out there but lets get real the recruitting in the area is at Los Altos right now.

Im not saying that you cant out recruit the guys at Los Robles ave, but Mr Di fiori isnt the one to do it. Although he didnt actually play Gano in a real game, he got worked three times in a row to the "G" and his staff in passing tournaments, so did Mr Verto, and the last one was a thrashing something like 9 td's to nothing, and Gano actually scholded the Amat coach like a 16 year old paper boy.

No Di Fiori cant recruit and he cant even keep kids in his school when he had the name, the boosters, the budget, the stadium, if I was Mr Di Fiori I would stay away from that area, it would get ugly real fast.

As for the other re-treads out there, All those guys are trying to live thru the Amat name, they still need bodies in those uniforms.

Heres one for size how bout a Black or mexican for the job that would be a twist im for a black coach or at least a hispanic this time.

lets see if we can pull this one off.

Humm 80% hispanic and most of the stars are black but no minority coach now thats strange.

I am staying at Diamond Ranch. I respect Bishop Amat and will let them choose what they want to go public with concerning this matter.
Freddy call me. You have my number.

Roddy Layton
Diamond Ranch

jcaz is a fool.

Spoon wont leave (Park) Coach Parker !!

All this talk/rumors/innuendos about which candidate will be Amat's next HC, has all the local power house teams sweating in their jock straps, since the right HC choice will have a significant impact on the local talent base.... flocking or transfering to Amat.

The stock value at Amat will go up if it were a publicly traded company when the right man is selected. This means the stadiums will fill to capacity again, talented players flocking to play for a winner, positive publicity for the SGV and restore the winning tradition that has been sorely missed.

If this happens, believe you me, I wouldn't mind paying $20 a game to see a Winner at Amat again!

Go big blue. Make the right choice, make it happen!

jcaz,

scroll down to my last post
Aguirre is not the present head coach at Carson, he is the Assistant Commissioner of the CIF-City Section.
Hagerty is a coordinator at Citrus Hill in Perris
DiFiori is an assistant at Lasalle

Spoon to coach Bassett

I am starting to get impatiant / with what should be done already

I just want to understand who the players are in this game, and where they are currently at.

Layton is head coach at Diamond Ranch.
Aguirre is the head coach at Carson.
Heggins is the head coach at Baldwin Park.

But where is Difiori and Hagerty coaching at, at this time ?

Sometimes the names get thrown arround, but not everyone knows who is whom or where they'er at.
Thanks !

Difiori to Wilson will be a steal for that program. I could see Verti going over there to be the O corrdinator along side him.

AS A BRAVE FAN, I HOPE KEEPING HEGGINS IS A PRIORITY, WOULD NOT LIKE TO SEE HIM GO. NOW ON THE OTHER HAND AS FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THE BRAVES OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR IS A AMAT ALUM.
THIS GUY I HOPE WOULD GET A POSITION ON THE AMAT STAFF SO THE BRAVES CAN ACTUALLY PROGRESS AS A OFFENSIVE TEAM. GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM AND GIVE THE BRAVES A CHANCE OF WINNING IN THE COMING YEARS. THERE IS ALOT OF TALENT COMING UP, AND WE DONT WANT TO SEE IT GOING TO WASTE......

GO BRAVES !!!!

The best part to all this is that Amat has committed itself to bringing back the program full force. Layton, Aguirre, Hagerty it does not matter they will get a good one one way or another. It will upswing the team that has fallen face down the last 2 years. I am looking forward to attending the new and improved Amat football games. We cannot do any worse then what we were getting. The problem with the Amat bashers is they want to see Amat continue to slide in hopes of keeping certain talent grounded to their school, now the tide will turn and given Amat gets this new coach and the football program begins to roll as the King again , those neighborhood kids from other areas will now start flocking to Amat. This is good for Amat and the SGV, to have their only D1 team loaded and ready to take on the Pac5 once again.

“This was before the job opened up. The roles reversed. All Layton has to do is come out and say he is not applying for the job just like Gano.”

Maybe Layton doesn't want to be called a liar, like Gano. Too many people know that Gano applied for the Chino Hills job and Layton has talked to Bishop Amat about that job. He has the choice to come out and lie about it like Gano has done, “No Comment” or “Yes, I am “. Personal I would take the “No Comment” or the “Yes, I am” route. The route you take defines the man that you are or the man that you aren’t.

Layton has talked to McCutchen, but not as the story is told on this BLOG. Layton was asking McCutchen to join his staff at DR.

This was before the job opened up. The roles reversed. All Layton has to do is come out and say he is not applying for the job just like Gano.

Just a thought or question..

How does coach Bogan, or Gano keep their staffs together every year? I thought for sure somebody from one of those coaching staffs would go for that wilson job, or any head coaching for for that matter. Heck, are their any coaches on those staffs even worth mentioning??

I dont know, but you would think there could be a future head coach on one of those staffs.. What do you guys think?

GO WILSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Heggins called this morning and said he was never approached by Amat people.

Layton has talked to McCutchen, but not as the story is told on this BLOG. Layton was asking McCutchen to join his staff at DR. He had us meet him and welcome him to our school. When Layton wants something he will go after it and we don't blame him. Layton is staying at DR. Week Five DR and Amat are playing. No douubt game of the week.

Front Runners... John Aguirre and Steve Hagerty.
Leyton dropped out of the running yesterday. Heggins is staying at BP.

For those reading Layton has told the parents and players he is staying at DR. His children go to school here.

Wake Up D Ranch Parents. When it is confirmed that Layton has already spoken to McCutcheon, the writing is on the wall. Now if and when he doesn't get the job, he has some explaining to do.

Hagerty is a great hire as well as Aguirre. They would definitely leave the school in a better situation than Layton.

And I'm not sold on having Amat Greats to come back and coach. They have the name but no coaching experience. And isn't that what Amat fans had a problem with this last staff. Put some of these guys on the lower levels so we can build a real program. If they have problems with that, they don't have the best interest of the program in their minds.

REGARDING AMAT,WE NEED A COACH WITH SOME KIND OF OFFENENSIVE INOVATION.AS AN ALUM, WE HAVE HAD THE WORST BLOCKING& TACKLING TEAMS SINCE SALTY DOG LEFT.I DON'T KNOW WHAT GOES ON AT PRACTICE, BUT WE NEED TO BRING BACK THE HITTING(TACKLING) DRILLS.FINALLY,WE NEED A COACH TO BRING BACK SOME DICSIPLINE.YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT THE MOST PENALIZED TEAMS I'VE EVER SEEN,THAT'S ALL.

Joe Amat, Steve Hagerty is a name I've heard mentioned too, and since this thread started, some have been telling me he's the front-runner.

The player at the All Star game you are talking about is Terrance Dennis. Get your facts straight. He was injured and had to leave to the hospital. He was in pain and upset. He has had a whole year off with knee surgery and is finally ok to go back up to Fresno State. Imagine that you are a scholarship player who is in your last high school game and you injure your knee. The pain. The frusteration. I think we can all remember the frusteration on Magic Johnson's face when he got injured in the NBA championship. Terrance left the field and returned because he wanted to cheer on his teammates for the remainder of the game. For those reading Layton has told the parents and players he is staying at DR. His children go to school here.

Roddy Layton to Bishop Amat ...

GOOD CHOICE . With the help of the solid staff that SHOULD be there already , a SOLID season should be in store for The Blue & Gold . Maybe a run @ a 7 win season , kind of like the Bruins hiring Chow as an OC . MAYBE A 7 win season . REMEMBER it will STILL take a while , but it should help with recruiting . BEST OF LUCK AMAT !
Bring some glory back to the SGV !

FIGHT ON

TM

A few things:
Aguirre coached with Salter - not Parades. His son was a student at amat at that time. He was brought on by Salter after having prior City Section head coaching experience
(I want to say Franklin - help?)
and then won 2 titles at Carson. As an Assistant Commissioner in the City Section he would also be a great future AD, which would be in line with my theory that it is also Manzo's final year, as he looks to move on and do other things. This could be a sticking point with Aguirre, as amat would have to put together a package that would match an Assistant Commissioners salary, and AD could be a part of that. Keep an eye on this one. Maybe Manzo's covering his bases in case those "other things" don't come thru and that's why he may be contacting others that may not be AD candidates, like Layton.

I can guarantee one thing, and that is if Roddy comes on campus it is not "to listen to offers" as none of those will be made. That would imply that he is a choice, and he is a ways down on the pecking order right now. He may have discussions about the situation, facilities, possibilities - but numbers will not be discussed until a candidate is selected/offered.
The other "weird thing" is MSGr is not really hip on recruiting/stealing/making first contact with head coaches from other schools. This points away from Layton or Heggins(who has NO chance) and Willigs St Paul connection with MSGr scares me - but I can't imagine that MSGr will get his way this time after how his last few coaching choices have turned out.

All of this points to Aguirre or a name that hasn't been mentioned too much here - and that is Steve Hagerty. amat alum, former teacher/dean/assistant, went to Paraclete and won a few consecutive CIF titles and left the program in good enough shape that they won some more after he was gone. He left Paraclete to go to JW North with former amat coach Mark Parades and won a CIF Championship there. He struggled a bit at Riverside Poly, and presently is a coordinator at Citrus Hill. He would be a great choice, as well as Aguirre, and they probably run 1-2 on the list - with a BIG gap between 2 & 3.

It will be interesting.

James Heggins?

No offense but if he is being considered then they must be making cold calls. The guy has done a little bit at BP but come on. This blackbacker guy sounds more like a Heggins buddy trying to throw a name out.
Blackbacker, that's a great name. Have you been hanging around the Hillary Clinton campaign with her racist reverand buddy?
Where's White Pride guy and Brown pride guy while were at it?

Maybe I got my facts wrong, so if I do I'll apologize in advance, but wasn't it a Diamond Ranch player that threw off his pads and stormed out of the stadium at last year's ALL STAR game? DURING THE GAME!!! Only to have his mother bring him back? I believe that player was from Diamond Ranch and he was on schedule to play for Fresno State, right? Played defense, I think he was a Safety if memory serves me right.

I saw Diamond Ranch against a depleted Los Altos team and Diamond Ranch was nothing special. Los Altos should have wo that game and gave Diamond Ranch a good old ass whupping physically. The last second TD was Layton's saving grace after HE made an ASS out of himself while arguing a non call..or Call...Either way, no matter how good an x and O coach Layton is or where he played he's NOT what Bishop Amat needs.

Coach aguirre has done it before at some of the toughest environments, Carson, Garfield, Salesian and Bishop Amat. He makes players responsible, develops his assistant coaches and leaves the school better AFTER he leaves. That's saying something about the man and his character. Besides his players have moved on and graduated...most recently from his Championship team at Carson and now recent Cal graduates.

It'll be tough to see Coach give up a nice job with CIF but in the end it's about restoring a program in need of a proven leader of men and young men.

Best of luck to Bishop Amat.

Layton has all the enthusiasm needed for Amat. If you have heard the way he speaks it is easy to see why players flock to him. Bring in Layton and the players will come back. Layton, DMac and Sermons. 3 Trojans who understand tradition. Take the qualified staff members on campus, Layton and his coaches, add players from the entire valley and Amat is back. #1 team in the SGV Bishop Amat Lancers!

Layton is not the guy for Amat..

Better coaches out there..

hey jcaz. get a sense or humor pal

I think Insider just confirmed the Layton rumor with the Amat staffer being Manzo. Hemingway and Carroll might not appreciate Manzo going behind their backs being the so called politician he claimed to be.

D Ranch parents and the administration must not be pleased with Layton now.

Layton still has not officially applied for the job, but has been approached by Amat staffers and committee members and is listening to their offers. He is suppose to visit the campus on Thursday to have a "sit down" with JJ and Daylon. All three are friends and JJ and Layton grew up together.

You know, this is a forum where anyone can express his opinion. On certian occasions however, we are forced to read posts from people, who post comments just to be foolish and to not contribute anything to the disscussion.
This guy, "Breaking news" seems to have issues.

I want all to know that, I do necessarily advocate censoring here, but come on ! All this guy does is to continually post something negative towards Amat and to the people who post their concerns regarding the program.

Breaking News, if your going to come in a talk smack, ok, but at the very least have "a take" becasue at the very least, we can something to discuss, right ??

Please don't just, post for silly little things like this that don't have any value at all.

BlackBacker,

If McCutcheon and John Jackson are on the committee, that could be a possibility. Remember Trevor Woods, Class of 93, and former teammate of McCutcheon is on staff at BP.

When did Aguirre coach with Paredes?

The Conspiracy theories are out there. Until we find out who is coach, no one will know who is right.

J H Who ?

Jame Heggins has been contacted about the Bishop Amat job. I think it would be great to have a black head coach at Amat! With JH as coach Amat would win CIF in two years.

Any thoughts??

I grew up on the 50 yard line of Bishop Amat watching the great teams with Pat Hadden and John Mckay and John Schiarra, and many more, I really thought Bishop Amat Football was something special, and it still has a place in my heart, but I recently moved to East Texas, and wow.....14,000 people at a High School Game, they play league games at Texas Stadium, High School coaches making 110,000 per year, and that is from a public school???? Maybe if they want some one of quality, maybe they should open up thier pocketbooks, after all they do pay to ge there....dont they???

Mitch,
No need for name calling. If you admit that this is a job, then please tell me which job performances don't benefit from financial incentives. Obviously this is not the NFL, but college coaches have financial incentives as well. At one point Amat was probably a better football team than the local junior colleges, and Amat certainly had more star power than the local colleges. So, how would a bonus be inappropriate? A coaching staff that plays in mid-December has a longer season and puts in more hours than the coaches who don't make the playoffs. Even labor unions would agree to extra pay for extra work, not to mention the free markets! I can certainly envision some drawbacks to not structuring the incentives properly.

I was just curious if anybody knew how Amat structures its coaching contracts.

Remember that Layton had a "off the record" talk with Fred. Layton told Fred that Manzo had talked with him and has the backing of DMac. Sermons is the go between. All are usc connected. If DAYLON and JJ are on this search commitee, it wouldn't be a fair search and get us back where we started. With a young head coach and an unproven coaching staff.

Amat just hired bozo the clown as head coach and Goofy as Athletic director. In a related story Joe Amat just had his lips removed from Goofy's butt!!

I'm not going to get into a this and that, but I have learned that Layton applied.

Fred, We are confused with your reporting. We were told by Roddy himself that it will get put out there that he has applied for this position. He has personally told his players and their parents that this rumor is not true.......he is committed to DR.
