Wednesday Showdown: Glendora 48, Damien 41

Damien held Glendora's Dominic Tiger-Cortes to just 14 points, but other Tartans stepped up, like Calvin Smith (9) and Kosmund Russell (8). Tiger hit five of his first six shots and finished with 12 first-quarter points. But when Damien started trapping and doubling him, he became more of a facilitator, which helped because he missed his last eight shots. Damien's Austin Napolitano finished with 12 points and Tony McClendon had 11, but the Spartans struggled from the 3-point line, connecting on just 3-of-14 shots.
The Tartans (16-6, 5-0) are in control of the Sierra with a two-game lead over Damien (16-6, 3-2), and a one-game lead over Chino Hills (19-3, 4-1), who defeated Ayala, 63-51 on Wednesday.

Defense: The Tartans' D looked like this all night.

Comments

Yeah my bad, I realized that once i posted it. He's an assistant with Rowland. I shook the guy's hand, an amazing coach and an amazing spirit for an older man. I was in awe to be in the presence of a man with 400+ wins. Rowland played their hearts out in a pretty good game, Glendora struggled with offensive rebounds and turnovers. 3 points in the 3rd quarter really killed the tartans. Kerry tore us apart with his visions and passing ability. But Tartans will learn and will take this loss and apply it to league and make something good out of it.

Win League Tartans!

Not to disappoint - but Pres is no longer the coach at West Covina

Look at the picture of Calvin!, Dad teaches at our school, lived here his whole life. No recruiting, No switch of address, just pure hustle defense that wins ball games. I am truly excited about the next Chino Hills game, i think if we take Harkey out the picture like we did in the 2nd half of last game, our 10-0 dream in league will soon become a reality.Lawrence and Brown I think just don't have it in them to hit the big shot.

I am getting more excited every game I've been to. And today's game at APU with West Covina and the all loved Coach Gary Prestesater, who coached at San Dimas at brought them a ring or two. And Watching Etiwanda and ML King, 2 top ranked teams in the Div. 1A. Will be a real treat.

Go Tartans Go!

wowzer aka matt bolt

did you even play football

Sierra League wait until playoff time. Same as football. Sierra League is dying on the vine.

No evidence that the Sierra is down this year, in fact it may be stronger. Just look at the facts. 4 teams ranked in CIF (top 16), Calpreps has the league ranked #16 amoung all leagues IN THE STATE and like 61 or so in the country (top 5%). I doubt they were ranked that high the last couple of years. Chino Hills has the #6 ranking in the division by Cal preps and has some very good wins. Even Diamond Bar just beat Santiago, who's #3 or 4 in their division. Glendora's pre-season was just OK, but they are obviously a much better team now and would probably have won 2 or 3 more at least if playing like this. Every year the older fans/players think the younger guys are not as good, but watching Damien, I see a team every bit as good as last years. And they may be looking at 3rd place this year. Just my opinion (and some facts and opinions of others)

Don't be so sure about GHS being down next year. I thought last year's team had more talent than this. Only 3 players returned from the rotation last year and 2 of them (Beckwith & Brothers) are still coming off the bench this year. A couple of seniors stepped in this year inside to help a great deal, but some youngsters also improved much and are filling big roles. They will likely continue to grow and the scoring will be more balanced next year. There are a couple of other Jrs. that don't play much that will be good as well. Ad a player or 2 from the lower levels and they will still be solid. As for this year, the team is surprising even me (a glass half full person). Yes, it's a lot about Dom, but playing well around a player like that can be difficult (see Kobe) and it takes guys to embrace and fulfill their roles and then shine in just the right moments. The Tartans continue to improve in that area. Credit the players and credit that great staff (not just Le Duc...he's got some great help).

AFter Cortez,

who does glendora have????????????????

I bet they end up like a diamond bar caliber team next year.....they got nothing.

Fred wasn't the ones who posted those blogs last night it was me for some reason it came up that Fred posted them. Sorry for that mistake

Every year whiie other local teams win big with very good to great players, by SGV comparison, Glendora's Coach LeDuc continues to teach and preach the value of fundamentals, team play, and hard work. Last year he was able to get the most of the least talented team I've ever seen Glendora suit up. Yet he was able to get his son a CIF spot well earned by the way, hold Tiger together during a difficult family crisis and beat Damien when it mattered most. This year Coach LeDuc has put together a team that may not be the most talented but still competes as a team. Next year's team will be special again with BJ Gonzalez and company taking their place with the big boys. The man just knows why he's a coach, loves his job and has a great family to boot. Maybe someday when he's retired people will step back and admire his body of work. Last night Coach LeDuc took another young contender and showed them the ropes. The Sierra League Championship runs through Glendora. Pay your dues at the door. Congratulations Coach LeDuc.

Fred like I said Tiger is that good. He turn his game up last night not by shooting by passing the ball. It's not just one player that make a team its the whole team.

Don't believe the hype!

DHS vs. Diamond Bar 61-55 (10-11 Overall 0-4 League)
DHS vs. Glendora 41-48 (16-6 Overall 5-0 League)

Time for some honest number crunching.

Damien record vs. teams with losing records (11- 0) 100%
Damien record vs. teams with winning records (5-6) 45%
Damien record is 16-6 Overall and 3-2 League

Every year DHS schedules weaker and weaker teams and fields weaker and weaker teams. Somehow DHS has convinced themselves that's progress! Jake Vieth vs. Tony Vela or Brian Mancilla or Chris Thomas. Corey Yates vs. Lonnie Browne , Brandon Moreland or Justin Riley. Austin/Jormitsa vs, Nick Bright or Andrew Hacker, Woodland vs.Drew Turner, David Girden or Griffin Rahme, Tony Mc Clendon vs. Freddie Browne, Danny Alfaro or Justin Riley. Bench players: absolutely no comparison from past DHS teams. DHS continues to break season win records by beating up on local DIV 6/7/9 talent who rarely have more than one 6 footer on the roster and then loses in the first round of the playoffs! Even though DHS sports the biggest lineup in the Valley year after year. This year 6'9", 6'6", 6"5, 6' 3", 6"4, 6'1", 6"2". Best win was a split with a good Bonita team that gave the game away in the end.

The Sierra League is watered down. There is no denying that anymore with Chino and Diamond Bar a combined 10-29!
1.Glendora
2.Chino Hills
3.Damien
4.Ayala
5.Diamond Bar
6.Chino

In that order.

Keep it up Tartans! It was a great win tonight against Damien.

rowland can stop nogales they're just as good as they are and note that they only loss that rowland has in league is to nogales....the only reason the raiders lost was because they were missing a key player

i used to go there and i go to the games.

chris so you are pro nogales too? =D

Kerry Carter with 31 points tonight a game high 7 three's. maybe a possible player of the week???

Again tough D wins ball games. Glendora took Woodland out of the game and their other guys couldn't pick up the slack. 59-51, Up by 10 at Half so and as close as 2 at one time in the 3rd. However glendora's tough defense and strong play by Coz and Cal and Josh. Won them the game. If glendora learns to not make dumb turnovers and correct the little mistakes watch out Sierra League because it looks like a sweep is coming.

Just Like Football!

Fred,

The answer to your question is 14! Yeah baby...nice win GHS. SO many guys contributed in little and big ways. This was a true team win tonight. Hard fought, defensive struggle. Two teams that know each other so well that they mostly neutralized each other's big weapons. It became a game for the role players to win, and Glendora's were just better tonight. I must admit, in my most optomistic projection I never had the Tartans 5-0 through the first half! Not with road games @ DB, @ CH and @ Damien. Just Amazing!!! Still much more to go, but it's a great start.

South Hills was just horrible in the 1st half none of their shots were goin in, and they allowed several drives for layups. It was 41-16 at halftime.

Nogales vs Walnut on Friday

Go Nogales!!

Nogales 61
South Hills 45

is nogales really this good, or did south hills just have a down night

mind you, they dominated the game the whole night. South Hills didnt score its first point until like half way into the first quarter, and they scored 13 points in the first half

they led by as much as 37 in the game

do you know if anyone (other than diamond ranch) can legitimately beat them?

what is your take?

Nogales remains undefeated in league play with a 65-41 win.

Nogales was up 37 at one point.

Please tell me you have better things to do than come on this blog and whine. Go get a hobby. Ya big baby

"Little" James needs to stop crying and go watch golf instead. its not these kids' faults that 99.9% of them suck and are scrubs compare to the rest of socal's high school athletics.

Are you kidding me with these retorts? Fred, the columns or blogs you are refering to usually are directed at college or pro athletes. We are talking about kids here Fred. There has to be a line drawn somewhere. You hold the power over this site, all I'm asking is that you be more responsible with your editing or supervision of the site. There were some comments yesterday about Glendora or Damien that were just off the wall. They had nothing to do with sports yet there they still are posted...great job there "professional"

My topics are tame and this blog is no different than most sports blogs. Show me a sports blog where athletes and coaches aren't criticized, and I'll show you a sports blog without comments. I wish every comment was positive, but I live in the real world. We will continue to eliminate outrageous comments when we come across them, or when they're brought to our attention.

think you can do better little man?

Fred,

I have been reading some of the blogs posted to your site over the past couple of days, and I must say I am very dissapointed. You as a so called "Journalist" should have more integrity and control over you blogs. This is hardly a sports blog for your area or any other for that matter. This seems more like a platform for targeting young athletes who cannot defend themselves. You should be fired or step down. This is unacceptable and you should be ashamed.

Sounds about right Fred. Get there a little early you'all.
