Wrestling Thursday: West Covina at South Hills, 6:30 p.m.
Note: Story says match is at West Covina, it was wrong. It's at South Hills ...
South HIlls-West Covina wrestling preview

Above: This is your opportunity to watch South Hills' Thomas Williams, the defending 112-pound state champ.
South Hills is No. I in Div. III, but coach Rob Froh knows tonight's match won't be easy.
"West Covina may be young, but they are always tough," said Froh. "I think we may have them on experience, but it's like I told my guys, `No one picked the Giants to beat the Packers last week, but look who is going to the Super Bowl. It doesn't matter how it looks on paper, but how you perform. If we come to wrestle, we should be fine."

Joser,
Why don't you come to the dual and support, and bring the rest of Lancer country. I am sure our boys would love to see more people in the stands rooting for them!

Shoot Pin and Spin,
Your team better not lose to Bonita or all hell is going to break loose in Lancer County.

what is up at Amat,
All those players you mentioned had the opportunity to wrestle and didnt't. Austin was practicing with the team, when Difiori pulled him out of practice talked to him and he never returned. Others have tried it, found it too tough and quit. Just the way it goes. I am sure the coach would have LOVED to have all of them come out for the team. Also I think that most of those guys you spoke about would be in the heavier wieghts. 189 and up. Not sure if they would have beaten Silva and Hernandez to take thier spots on the varsity team. Actually, Brice when he was there tried wrestling for a season. We still have a strong chance at being league champs and are contenders to repeat as CIF champs. Don't count us out!! Coach Pierre is an institution at that school. He has literally built that program from nothing. I don't think you should count the his wrestling team in with the problems of the other teams.

Shoot Pin, N Win,
Looks like the Lancer wrestling team is crumbling like the football team. what is happening at that school that their teams dismantle at the slightest pitfall. your coaches should have recruited more of your football players to wrestle this year...At least find something they may be good at ....Lopez, stremple, ochoa, wagner, teter, prieto, loera, pacheco,austin,creager,..I am sure the coaches would have found some diamonds in the rough there.

Lancer wrestling fan,
Having all those guys out doesn't make things any easier. This season proves that nothing is "for sure". This years team was in pretty good position to repeat as champs. Grades, injury, personal issues have killed us. I admit its going to be tough at CIF duals. I have partial info on Hernandez, Devon, Stevie, and Ralphie. I will wait to see if I can get some hard facts before I comment. What I can say is that we are by NO MEANS out of it. We have Bonita (dual) this week, as well as league finals. Finals is where everything begins to count. So I am VERY interested to see how we show. That will be a good indication of the rest of the post season...

Shoot Pin Win,
Whats the story on Lil Ralphie Bracomontes(sp?) I hear he quiT due to health issues?..I got the opportunity to see him wrestle and he won his match, he is not bad. What does this do to the Amat team now that Hernandez is not there and espindola has been hurting and the others have been getting beat besides Ortega and Silva and a couple of others. Is the wrestling team crumbling all of sudden.

Props to Alcantar! I missed the tourney.. Would have loved to see that match.. I am really looking forward to league finals and the post season..
Wrstlnfn:
We did lose our 45er which hurts us, I had heard someone got hurt, but didn't know who it was and that it was for the season. Who calls them "reserves"? I have never heard that term being used for them. Who are you talking about that doesn't get "credit". Your comment was WAY too general. I have heard credit given at one point or another for each one of our wrestlers. So again, who is not getting "credit".

The 215 kid was from Mojave HS in North Neveda. and yes they are state champs. How many high schools are in Neveda anyways? And i agree, that was an awesome match. 215 Alcantar went the 3 periods and beat the 80 and 0 Reggie.

went to the montclair tourney and there was a school there for MOJAVE. they are their state champs. and apparently their 215 is like 80 and 0. while he was 80 and 0. Until he met up with 215 alcantar from Northview. that was like the last match of the day and it was so awesome and so intense. All everyone kept hearing all day was that their 215 was 80 and 0 and that no one, they meant NO ONE could beat him. Its ok to have the confidence but dont run your mouths. Anything can happen and every match is different. Yes the kid from Northview won. Mojave 215 pinned kids all day within the 1st periods, but Alcantar went all 3 periods with him and won 9 to 8. It was awesome. Yes, Mojave was a great school and took 1ST and Northview took 2ND. GREAT JOB TO ALL THE TEAMS THAT DAY!!

Amat Alum & SPW:
The key to Amat repeating at the Duals this yr is not Hernandez, Ortega or Stevie. They will win there matches if they are their. The "KEY" is going to be the so called reserves ( The rest of the lineup ). The ones no one ever talks about or gives credit too !. Amat won CIF last yr because you had 3 kids step-up out of no were & come up with 6 (18 pts) against Canyon Springs. Rumor has it your 25/30'r is out for the season with an injury & your 45'r has left the team ? Both of them were going to good for 6 this yr against Canyon springs ! Hopefully Espindola & Hernandez come back or it will be really tough to repeat.

Amat Alumn,
If Andrew has kept in condition, he has a good chance of making out of CIF and into the master's meet. If not......it will be a tough road. I see your point. I believe we can repeat, but its going to be a fight. Our only dual meet loss so far has been to ST. john Bosco, and we would have won had Stevie been in the line up in my opinion. The road to repeat is going to be a bumpy one.

Huskie,
We are definitely missing hernandez in the line-up. Ortega has lost some tough matches. The matches I have seen him lose have been by a point or two margin. I think he will pull it out. He didn't place at 5-counties last year and he qualified for the state. So I am hoping he can do it again. So what happened with Thomas, I watched him lose a heartbreaker in Fountain Valley? I was pulling for him to take it. Another one of your guys that has impressed me is Pearson. I would have never guessed he would have cut to 71's! I watched him stick a kid at 5-counties and he looked good. Why did he make the decision to drop?
Posted by: Shoot, Pin, Win!! | January 25, 2008 4:46 PM
With Andrew Hernandez not wrestling and not enuf matches under his belt this year, even with his return he will not qualify for Masters. Am I wrong here.? I feel he has let his teamates down this year. As a seniors this was the year they go back to back with Hernandez, Silva, Ortega, ..does not look like it now...Still not a bad squad to compete.

Shoot Pin Win,
Thanks for the info. Intrested in Hernandez only because he was a very good wrestler as a Junior. Hope he gets back into it, I always thought he was one of your better men on the mat. Silva is very good and I feel he is getting closer and closer to getting over that hump and will beat Alcantar their next match if they should meet up again. Has Otega just been in with some real good wrestlers that he is not as good as last year. You are right Masters will be the bomb!. We are looking forward to it.

Stevie has been out most of the season. He should be back next week (hopefully). Having said that, he hasn't been tested. If Thomas comes down in weight, I think the match would be a good one. I don't think that would happen though. I am very interested to see how he does upon his return. As far as Hernandez goes, I don't know what his deal is. I had heard he was going to return, but haven't seen him suit up. There are some rumors but I haven't heard anything concrete, so I won't comment. Silva took 8th, the match between he and Alcantar was great! He got beat by a point in triple OT. It's going to be an exciting masters tourney.

Shoot pin Win,
How would Your 112 pounder Espindola stack up against Williams of So. Hills?... I understand Silva 215 came in 8th overall in Fountain Valley and your other wrestlers tanked. Silva is a stud no doubt but what is happening with the rest?...what happened to Andrew Hernandez is he hurt? grades? or just not intrested anymore?

I guess I got my answer. Good job South Hills! My guess is West Co will be back... Anybody know what local teams will be at the Montclair tourney this weekend? I know some wrestlers are nearing the 40 match limit?
Posted by: Shoot, pin, Win!! | January 25, 2008 10:32 AM
GOOD JOB SOUTH HILLS.. LOOKS LIKE YOU GUYS WERE DOMINANT AGAINST WEST COVINA, THE WAY NORTHVIEW WAS DOMINANT AGAINST YOU. BUT THEN AGAIN, NORTHVIEW DOES HAVE A GREAT PROGRAM.
