Did you root for the champs?

CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA championship
Thursday's result
La Verne Lutheran 57, Pacific Hills 56.
Note: Jordan Sally hit the game-winning basket with 15 seconds left. The Trojans complete the perfect season, going 28-0. Next up, state playoffs.

Fred's take before Thursday's final: No more Glendora? The basketball season is over, right? Stop right there, we've got La Verne Lutheran. Our La Verne Lutheran. Stop rolling your eyes, I already know what you're thinking. How did a team go from 7-12 and sixth in the lowly Arrowhead League in 2007 to an undefeated small school power (27-0) in 2008. Well, to be blunt, some talent enrolled at the school, which includes five freshman, three sophomores and obviously a coach they wanted to play for in Eric Cooper, whose nephew Carl Cooper is the best freshman of them all, averaging 19 points. There are only two players left from last season, and they're both seldom-used role players. Before the season started I told you this was the beginning of the next Price, Verbum Dei or the east side version of Renaissance Academy, which proved to be the best Pasadena Star-News area team this past season. And I still say, what's wrong with it? More power to them if great players all want to go to the same place. This is what should have happened at Bishop Amat after building the crown jewel of high school gyms in the San Gabriel Valley, but it didn't happen. It's happening at Lutheran. If this was happening at Amat, area fans would probably embrace them like they did for those state-championship winning girls basketball teams. But because it's Lutheran, let's just say there is not a lot of love in the air. I can tell you with absolute certainty there are several area coaches who are not fond of what's happening at Lutheran, with one coach constantly refereeing to them as "the cheaters." News flash, they've never been caught cheating, nor have they been under investigation, and until or unless that happens, we shouldn't be rushing to judgment. So they became great overnight. So what, that happens at private schools. If this was happening at Sierra Vista, then you can start rolling those eyes and waving the red flags. For now, I'm going on record saying I'm rooting for these guys. I know they will never be the SGV's favorite sons, that title still, and probably always will belong to Glendora. But will they be embraced? Is this a team that San Gabriel Valley basketball fans will follow when other teams are eliminated? Will other area coaches grow to respect them or even schedule them? Guess we'll find that out in the years to come because La Verne Lutheran isn't going away, they're only going to get better.

On an interesting side note, read Tania Chatila's news story in today's Tribune

Thank You DC for your comments - I'm so glad, someone else has said something positive, instead of all the negative. It was a great year for LVL, the boys worked hard and they played hard! They never gave up or quit like others did. They played to the end - that's what separates the men from the boys.
I'm proud of them! It's great that SGV has another team they can root for and cheer on!

DC with so many choices to play at quality football programs for free or for pay in the area you went to lutheran? sure and that scout team you talk about its called intramurals. like all the soft kids that get beat downs at webb and lutheran you sucked. get overself. mister angry young man

Sorry about the typos, I was typing emotionally! Perhaps if someone would have knocked me from the team in high school, I would have given a better effort in typing class!

Here's an alum view. When you play ball at a small high school and you're "average" there is a good chance that you will over estimate your abilities. College has a way of helping with that. I was an all-league football player at Lutheran and only made the scout team in college. I wish LHLV would have attracted better athletes when I was playing, it would have made me better. So I see two different beefs here: First, highly skilled players were attracted to play at LHLV and mediocre players lost their roles and many didn't even try out, most likely to avoid the hearing that there are people with better skills out there. Well, I'm sorry, perhaps it could have been handled better, but that is high school sports. If you are the best, you play, if not, you work harder or find something else to do. Is that un-Christian? Does it mean that Christian schools should only let play people with lessor talent, but who are very nice? (I don't even know that the "old" players were even nice or not) Are these parents who are protesting being "Christian?" I think that they have misplaced energy. Playing HS sports is not an entitlement, you have to be good, that is the nature of sports. I wonder how many of these past players were planning on playing in college? So they found out a year or to early. Most likely, it will give them an advantage to deal with this now and they can hit the books in college.

Second, tere are some who say that these players are second stringers at other schools. OK, maybe that was true, but now given a chance to shine, they sure are! So there were some weak schools in the mix. UCLA played CSUSB this year, does that make them a sham? Look at the big picture.

These kids are doing a great job and are probably having the glory years of their lives. LHLV is an awesome small school where students feel safe, secure and cared for while prepping for college. That's why you attend. I wish them well! I just wish they would have come sooner!

Want to be on a winning team next year? go to la verne lutheran. We take all good players and the hell with the current kids. open auditions!!

There's nothing tainted about working hard. Every school has transfers - even Glendora has been known to have students drive in from La Canada and other cities so they could play. Get over it!
Want to be on a winning team next year - then step up and take the challenge to play instead of hiding behind blogs undermining the school!

why do you think the kids didnt go out for the team? because of all the suspect transfers. Enjoy your tainted trophy!!

Nobody got screwed - it was their choice not play on the team (they didn't even go out for the team.) Don't whine & complain about the choices You and Your son made! And for the parents cowering in the stands - I never saw that - I saw parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, alumni cheering their hearts and lungs out. (Last year I was 1 of a very few parents who cheered them on!) It was great having people come together this year to cheer them on. They played hard, never giving up, playing to the last tenth of a second, even when refs were against them and they were down in points. These kids worked hard, stepped up and accepted the challenge put before them and excelled. It's time to put away the green-eyed monster, and stop undermining the kids and the school. It's finally "our" time and all parents need to step up and celebrate this success.

weakkkkk-that was their scrimmage!

whats wrong was the school " little sisters of poor" not available on their schedule? Weakkkkkkk

Hey nuts,

Their wins included victories over Sherman Indian School, San Diego Jewish Academy, Tarbut v'Torah, Padre Pio Academy, and teh California School for the Deaf.

Even though that sounds like a Jimmy Kimmel joke - I'm not making those up!

Well apparently they would start varsity on all the teams they beat. But maybe you think none of the teams they played had any talent either.

BBB you're being silly. isn't it true that the only reason those kids are even at lutheran is because they wouldn't cut it anywhere else? i went to the last luthern home palyoff game and the coaches were whooping and hollering in the 4th quarter with a 20 point lead like some classless dads at a city basketball league game. toatlly classless. the competion that night wasnt even freshmen level. i will say this laverne luthern sold it's soul for a championship. every one of thos ekids with the xcept of the amat transer wouldn't ever have made any team you respect varsity. any school at all. enjoy the championship and get ready for the beat down bonita will put on you next year. seeing the former LVL parents coward in the stands while the new parents boogied on down to RAP at it's lowest said all that needs to be said on that topic. glendora it ain't, damien it ain't bonita it ain't. welcome to lynwood.

BLAH BLAH BLAH is the one who brought up race.

I know that it was hard on the eyes to read the ALL CAPS rant by the psycho SCREAMING LVLu parent that signed his name BLAH BLAH BLAH , but I've extracted just the SCREAMING that related to race, and maybe you can get just that.

I HAVE LEARNED OVER THIS BASKETBALL SEASON, RACISM AND JEALOUSY IS STILL ALIVE IN 2008!!!!

IF THESE KIDS WERE "WHITE", IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A JOB WELL DONE, BECAUSE IN MY OPINION THE KIDS COULD FIT IN AND NOT BE SUCH A OUTCAST IN APPEARANCE!!!

THE REAL WORLD DOES NOT LOOK LIKE "GLENDORA" OR "LA VERNE", OUR KIDS WILL SUFFER FROM OUR IGNORANCE!!

THIS WORLD IS NO LONGER BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE!!!

who said anything about race? take your meds and relax. This about all the recent transfers. go look at the post from the lutheran parent. I am sure his kid is the one who got screwed.

people have hated on Mater Dei for years and they are pretty lily white. the common denominator is the disregard for the spirit of the rules and trying to get around them to win at all cost

First of congratulations to La Verne Luthern. Winning CIF in any division is not an easy accomplishment.

But come on Blah Blah Blah,
YOU ARE ONE ANGRY DUDE and NARROW MINDED. Everyone does not hate on La Verne's team, just because 3 or 4 bloggers disagree with the current circumstances at the school doesn't mean we all agree. Stop playing the 'Race Card'. Do you know that all the negative posts were compiled by 'White People'. You sure are making the boys championship run taste sour.

Get over it!!!!!

IVE READ SO MANY IDIOTIC COMMENTS OVER THIS BASKETBALL SEASONS BLOGS!!!! IM SO HAPPY THAT FRED OR WHOEVER AT THE TRIBUNE STARTED THIS COMMENT SECTION. 10% OF THE COMMENTS ARE FAIR, THE OTHER 90% ARE COMMENTS FROM YOU IDIOTS WHO FOR YEARS WANT TO OPEN YOUR STUPID MOUTHS AS IF YOU LIVE IN THE HOUSE OF THESE KIDS AND KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THESE KIDS HAVE "CHEATED'!!! HOW ABOUT THIS ADVICE, SHUT YOUR JEALOUS MOUTHS UNTIL YOU KNOW THE FACTS!!!! YOU ALL SOUND STUPID!!! ASK QUESTIONS, OR DO WHAT YOU DO BEST........CALL THE MEDIA, CALL CIF OR PROTEST!!!! THATS WHAT MOST OF YOU PEOPLE IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY DO WHEN YOU DO NOT GET YOUR WAY!!!! YES SALLEY TRANSFERRED, BUT DO YOU KNOW WHY? I DO!!! AND ITS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE, BUT IM NOT GOING TO WRITE IT. I WILL HOPE THAT YOU SEARCH FOR THE FACTS NEXT TIME!!! ONE THING I HAVE LEARNED OVER THIS BASKETBALL SEASON, RACISM AND JEALOUSY IS STILL ALIVE IN 2008!!!! CONGRATS TO YOU ALL FOR PROVING THAT!!! CIF HAS RUN AT LEAST 2-3 INVESTIGATIONS THIS SEASON AGAINST LUTHERAN!!! PARENTS FROM LUTHERAN HAVE GONE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AND TRIED TO DIG UP AND OFFER AS MUCH INSIDE INFORMATION THEY COULD TO HURT THESE KIDS!!! THE NEAR BY NEIGHBORS HAVE CALLED THE OPPOSING TEAMS AND TRIED TO TELL THEM THAT THESE KIDS ARE LEGALLY NOT ELIGIBLE. NEWS REPORTERS HAVE APPROACHED OPPOSING COACHES AND REFEREES MINUTES BEFORE TIP OFF IN HOPES OF SUPPORTING THE RUMORS THEY HAVE HEARD TO CAUSE A PROTEST OF THE GAME. COACHES IN THE LEAGUE HAVE CALLED CIF AND MADE COMPLAINTS, AND SOME OF THE TOP RATED TEAMS IN THE VALLEYS HEAD COACHES HAVE OPENLY TRIED TO RALLY THE KIDS ON THE TEAM, PARENTS IN THE STANDS, AND EVEN A WHOLE CITY OF LA VERNE TO TURN THERE BACKS ON "KIDS"!!!!!!!!!!! CAN I SAY THIS AGAIN PLEASE...............KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!! THESE KIDS ARE JUST AS INNOCENT AS YOUR PRECIOUS SON OR DAUGHTER AT HOME!!! THEY PLAY THERE HEARTS OUT AND GET GOOD GRADES!!! JUST BECAUSE THEY ALL WANTED TO PLAY WITH EACH OTHER IN HIGH SCHOOL MAKES EVERYONE SAY THIS HAS TO BE WRONG??????? WELL MY ADVICE IS TO GO OUT AND BUY A CIF BOOK AND BRUSH UP ON THE RULES!!! AS FOR THESE KIDS, STOP RAINING ON THERE PARADE!!!!! YOU JUST WITNESSED 5 FRESHMEN, 2-3 SOPHS, SOME JUNIORS AND SENIORS ON THE BEANCH WIN CIF!!!! ITS OVER, YOU CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!! SO SAD, BARRY BONDS, MARK AGUIIRE OR HOWEVER YOU SPELL HIS NAME!!! BARRY BONDS, ROGER CLEMONS...........SO SAD!!!! BARRY BONDS GOT THE BOOOOOOOOOS IN SO MANY STADIUMS THIS YEAR AND LAST YEAR. BUT CLEMONS CAN GO TO MINOR LEAGUE TRAINING CAMP TO HELP HIS SON AND OTHER PLAYERS, PITCH ALL YEAR AND BE PRAISED FOR HIS GREATNESS!!! BONDS IS GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT!!!! CLEMONS IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!!! YOU PEOPLE HEAR SOMETHING, JUDGE IT, PIGGY BACK ON IT, GATHER MORE FALSE INFORMATION FROM OTHER NON FACTUAL PEOPLE, THEN BECOME YOUR OWN JUDGE AND JURY WITHOUT ONE FACT TO BACK UP ANYTHING!!! THE SAD THING IS THAT I AM A WHITE MAN, MARRIED TO AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN AND I FIND IT EMBARRASSING AND IM ASHAMED WHEN I READ THESE COMMENTS EVERY WEEK!!!! IS THIS WHAT MY 13 YEAR OLD SON IS GOING TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH IF HE BECOMES A SUCCESS IN LIFE??? THE MIXTURE OF ME AND MY WIFE COME TOGETHER TO MAKE A BEAUTIFUL CHILD, BUT THE COLOR OF HER SKIN DARKENS THE MIX AND HIS HAIR IS CURLY SO NOW HE MUST BE A CHEATER!!!!! I KNOW I MAY SOUND A LITTLE NARROW MINDED RIGHT NOW, BUT LOOK AT EVERY BLOG THAT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH LUTHERAN HIGH........ALL NEGATIVE!!! IF THESE KIDS WERE "WHITE", IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A JOB WELL DONE, BECAUSE IN MY OPINION THE KIDS COULD FIT IN AND NOT BE SUCH A OUTCAST IN APPEARANCE!!! THE KIDS ARE INNOCENT!!!!!! THE PROGRAM WENT BY THE CIF RULE BOOK!!!! SO WHY CANT I WAKE UP AND READ PLEASANT REACTIONS!!!!! SOME AREAS WILL NEVER CHANGE!!! THE REAL WORLD DOES NOT LOOK LIKE "GLENDORA" OR "LA VERNE", OUR KIDS WILL SUFFER FROM OUR IGNORANCE!! THE PARENTS NARROW MINDED THOUGHTS PASSED FROM GREAT GRANDFATHER ON DOWN TO OUR KIDS, AND OUR KIDS PASS IT DOWN AS THEY GET OLDER!! THE GOOD THING IS THAT "ALL" OF THESE LUTHERAN STUDENTS AS A WHOLE SCHOOL, CAN SEE AND LEARN FIRST HAND THROUGH EXPERIENCE BEFORE THEY HEAD TO COLLEGE AND THE "REAL WORLD". PLEASE PREPARE YOUR CHILD!!!! THIS WORLD IS NO LONGER BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE!!! THERES SO MUCH MORE!!! EDUCATE, LEARN, AND ASK QUESTIONS TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO SHOW YOUR IGNORANCE!!! BY THE WAY, I WILL OFFER MY TOP 5 POST SEASON POLL!!!!

1) GLENDORA (GAINED MY RESPECT AS A TEAM ALL OVER AGAIN IN CIF)

2) LUTHERAN ( THERE UNDEFEATED, HAVE YOU SEEN THE LAST TWO TEAMS THEY HAVE PLAYED?? THEY ARE LEGIT!! CIF CHAMPS, SAY NO MORE )

3) NOGALES (MOST UNDERATED TEAM ALL SEASON, NEVER GOT THERE "PROPS"

4) CHINO HILLS (EVERYONE KNEW HOW TALENTED THEY WERE, BUT TALENT IS NOT EVERYTHING!!! YOU NEED HEART, HARD WORK AND DISCIPLINE)

5) BONITA (ONLY BECAUSE THEY WON THERE LEAGUE. SAD THING ABOUT BONITA IS THAT THEY COULD GO UNDEFEATED ALL YEAR, BUT WILL LOSE IN CIF 1ST OR 2ND ROUND EVERY TIME!!! HARDEST WORKING TEAM IN THE VALLEY ON DEFENSE, OFFENSE NEEDS TO BE POLISHED MORE THEN MY NICE DRESS SHOES!!! YOU CAN PLAY DEFENSE ALL DAY, IF YOU CAN NOT PUT THE BALL IN THE BASKET, YOU WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE. THE COACH NEEDS TO GET OFF HIS HIGH HORSE AND FIND A ASSISTANT WHO CAN TEACH THESE KIDS "OFFENSE". HE HAS THE DEFENSE DOWN GREAT, BUT ONLY IN FOOTBALL YOU CAN SUB PLAYERS DEPENDING ON DEFENSE AND OFFENSE.)

IN CLOSING, I WANT TO SAY GLENDORA, BONITA AND DAMIEN PLAYED THIS SEASON WITH PRIDE!!! I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE LUTHERAN FOR SHAKING UP THIS AREA!!! BASKETBALL WILL BE MORE COMPETITIVE AND PLAYED WITH MORE PRIDE AT LEAST FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS!!! NO ONE LIKES "THE NEW GUY", AND LUTHERAN IS THAT NEW GUY THAT COMES TO CAMPUS AND ALL THE GIRLS TAKE NOTICE!! DO YOU MAKE HIM YOUR FRIEND? OR DO YOU COMPETE TO STILL BE THE MR POPULAR YOU HAVE BEEN YOUR WHOLE LIFE?? COMPETITION IS HEALTHY, NOTHING WRONG WITH IT!!!

let the CIF investigation begin. How did salley get to play this year? this title is tainted!!!!!

57-56 La Verne Lutheran

did they win?????

fred
okay maybe not biased, but it appears that people seem to 'favor' certain teams over certain teams.. seemingly. you uare right. but yes good job on spreading the love around.

I have to say, this conversation is a bit redundent isn't it? I mean every year there is a team with crazy talented transfers or out of town enrollee's who make for a good championship squad. This just happens to be in our back yard. As for the legality of it all, there have been no formal charges or even complaints thus far. Unless you count the number of parents who's kid is not participating, no one is complaining. Whose to blame? Administrators for allowing it, and the CIF for sanctioning it without proper inquiry. But I think this is all a moo point. Moooooooooo!

Bias Henry? Sorry, we try to spread the coverage around as much as we can, but we also have to sell newspapers, and Glendora is without a doubt the most popular team in the SGV, hence, the coverage. We have to ask ourselves what people want to read in the morning paper and on the web, and in the case of boys basketball, it's usually Glendora. Especially when they're having a season like they just had. Let me ask you this Henry, the Lakers and Clippers are in the same town. Now, don't you think there's a reason the Lakers get two-to-three times as much coverage as the Clips? It's because there are more Lakers fans Henry, which means more readers, which means more blog conversation. That's not bias, that's giving your readership what it demands.

what?
yes i did go to the game...
i would not have been surprised, had glendora was able to win the game they will have enough to fill half of the pond...
tiger is a pure scorer.. so i give him props for that...and it looked to me that they were depending too much on him .. just what i observed anyways...
a good game nonethless
i apologize for misreading fred's thing, but still to declare something as fred did shows some bias... i feel

Come on guys...READ MORE CAREFULLLY! I'm gonna defend Fred and then get on him too.

THEHenry, Fred said Glendora is the "SGV's favorite son" NOT the Tribunes. He's talking about the fans in the valley. Did you go to the game? That crowd wasn't even near as big as some in the past, and it was big! They have the Valley's top player in Tiger (who BTW was sick against Nogales and only played the first couple of min. before sitting it out in an early season game).

Now Fred, I think if you read what Death and taxes wrote again, you'll see that he says "shame on you" to "the shadows behind the scenes". Not talking about you IMO.

so YOUR (the newspaper) favorite son is glendora. How about other schools in this area who went just as far, (eg Nogales) .. who, by the way defeated YOUR glendora.. nogales just had a unlucky draw, having to play perris in the third round, with a potential of meeting renissance in the final
my point is you gotta share your love to all who deserve it, which just proves to me mor that you (the paper) can be biased, which is a no-no in this busines....

just my two cents

pretty sad that the entire sgv is down to a small school who obviously stacked the roster

Being a father of a student who attends Lutheran High. This new crop of ball players has not set well with several parents or myself. This group of ball players have never mixed in weel at the school. They remain very clickish and in their own world. I found it dis-heatening when the re-turning team was basicaaly told by the coach he had his starting 10 even before the first day of practice and it did not include any of last years team. Is winning that important? What about the players who worked their way up from the jv team and basically were told you aren't on this team. Is that a christain attitude to take? Yes i have met the coach and yes he is an up-standing individual with great charm and i believe a good person. He is very respectfull and again i believe he has the best interest of the team in mind. But what about the kids who put in the time for 3 yrs and now you can't play. I do question the legallity of all the transfers most of which are bused in

Some will ALWAYS QUESTION ...

Go Trojans !

Fight On

TM

Shame on me? If we learn later that Lutheran has violated any CIF rules, then shame on them. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt unless or until I have proof to believe otherwise.

Fred,

Being a fellow writer (not news) I find it hard to believe that a school with no history of winning is suddenly undefeated from transfers or freshman enrollee's without seeing smoke, or the result of a great script. But, as you said until there is an investigation, this is all fair game. Good luck to the team, the kids are playing their hearts out obviously. But to the shadows behind the scenes, shame on you if the light shines.
