Boys Soccer: Mountain View wins, 1-0

| | Comments (6) |

The set-up man: Azusa's Diego Rodriguez (6) set up the lone goal in Tuesday's win, sending an errant shot that turned into an assist when Omar Rodriguez got his head on it, scoring at the near post in the 67th minute for the 1-0 win.

From Azusa: I'm the only person standing on the Azusa sidelines 20 minutes before the match, wondering where these guys are while Mountain View is warming up. Them from a distance, I see the Aztecs making their way toward the field, led by the Aztecs band. It was priceless. The Aztecs sideline filled up quick, with an estimated 300 fans and nearly 150 on Mountain View's side, creating a great atmosphere. Mountain View had more scoring opportunities, but the Aztecs had three or four dangerous chances too. In the end, a 1-0 victory for the Vikings was just, coming on Omar Rodriguez's header in the 67th minute. But I left thinking about one player, and that's Mountain View attacking midfielder/forward Jairo Aquino. He's got 32 goals this season, but watching him in person was impressive. He's bigtime. The chances he creates for himself and others with his speed, control, crosses, and cutbacks is a thing of beauty. He could play division one college soccer right now.

Above: If you haven't seen Mountain View's Jairo Aquino (10), go watch him when the Vikings host La Canada's in Thursday's quarterfinal at Mountain View. He's the real deal.
