Finally, it's time to play ball

Going long: Bonita's Jiovanni Mier getting high-fived after his two-run homer in the first inning on Friday. Bonita beat Colony 9-1 in the opening game of the Glendora tournament.
I love the spring, the warm-weather, and the beginning of the high school baseball and softball season. There's nothing like spending a few hours in the office, then heading out for an afternoon game. Got my sunflower seeds, water, lawn chair and shades, so I'm ready to go. I thought I would start in the Glendora tournament, where so many of the valley's best teams start this season. I watched Bonita beat Colony 9-1 on Friday, but tonight is special. Defending champs Bishop Amat and Charter Oak meet at Henderson Field at 7 p.m. Don't miss it.

Remember this: Bonita returns to action for the first time since "The shot heard around the SGV," which Aram playfully called it. Northview's R.J. Arnold belted a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Vikings to a 4-3 playoff victory over the Bearcats. Northview and Bonita will meet again on Tuesday.

Pirre you are right. I don't know why he bought in a meat ball picture. He gave the game to Garcia after they score 5 runs. What was he thinking

Well it looks like Amat may have a little strength in the Pen after all. There has been some mighty fine pitching going on these past couple of games for BA. If you were there for Amat's 11-1 win over Colony you'd have seen some more of the same. Great job Ikky (sp?), Carrillo and Paez. Way to keep it going.

It is what Amat does after Zuniga that counts. We all know what Z can do, lets see the rest of the pitching before we start crowning Bishop Amat with another D5 championship Banner.

#1 fan,Peralta sucks! he should have never been given the ball in that situation. Coach most likely is looking at the players getting ready for league and is not there to win this tounament. Delia or Costalano should have PITCHED in that situation to nail down the win. If this is the way our coach is going play his players, again we are in for a long year. What is with the 50 man roster of his.? that is lame.

I guess Amat is still pretty good after all. Zuniga looked damn good tonight. I guess he shut up a lot of you guys. Reyes crushed that homerun. Mcnit looked great in relief. I'm anxious to see who gets the start on Monday. I imagine it will be Icky or Alcantara.

lovethewhiteball - I was not responding to any of your posts. I was referring to sgvheat's comments. I guess they are both you. Gotta keep those names straight! LOL

Defensive! I was not putting down a particular kid, i was just making the point that these other players in our area do not get local recognition by our local paper. Do they ever get their pics or an article on SGV newspaper?
These players are just as good and going to D1 schools, two have already signed, but who does our local paper promotes? LA Times seem to know them but ignored locally.

Covinabaseballfan,
Great posts! I particularly like your point on the kids playing JC ball, (although I think you are aging yourself).
The Community College experience is also valued to that kid who exits High School unprepared GPA/SAT-wise.
Gotta love reality.

One very important thing that I did not touch on. Because of the lack of a sufficient amount of D1 scholarships - only ll.7 per school - there are SO MANY good players that will play baseball at schools that are not D1, as well as at Junior Colleges. The point is that they are getting their education, while still being able to play the sport they love. Additionally, colleges pick up a lot of their players from J.C.'s after the player has been there for 2 years because they have more experience than a kid right out of high school. There are numerous opportunities for kids to play ball after high school.

Let me educate you a little. If you took a look at a couple of lists of the top 150-200 players in the country (not just the SGV), you would have a very rude awakening. One thing that you will see, however, are pretty much the same kids on those lists. Most of them are pitchers/players who are versatile enough to play various positions, as well as good hitters. They love lefties, both on the mound and at the plate. These kids all have college scholarships to D1 schools before their senior year in high school, because colleges are looking for the same kind of player. Then they will go to that college and may end up playing a completely different position than they did in high school. Sergio Pedroza and Brett Pill are perfect examples of this. A good college coach can see "talent" in a player wherever they are playing. There are so many good players in this area - why do people feel the need to compare one with the other and make negative comments about kids from other schools? Just relax and enjoy all of the kids play - don't try to drag down the ones you feel are geting more "press" than your favorites. Enough said by me, check it out for yourself.

covinabaseballfan in what position could he be a top five?
Posted by: sgvheat | March 1, 2008 12:11 AM
Well, personally, I will take Cal State Fullerton's list. Dave Serrano knows all about the San Gabriel Valley, and how it's a goldmine for talent. And he should know because he recruited the players who got Fullerton to the Final Four in 2003 and to a national title in 2004, and most of their players where SGV kids

sgvheat - Gee, I wonder what kid that would be? I'll take Baseball America's list any day over the L.A. Times' list. No disrespect meant to those that are on it - as some of them are also on the B.A. one. And if they're not on any of them, WHO CARES? These lists aren't what they're "cracked" up to be!!

According to the OCR in today's first round game of the Loara tournament Fountain Valley beat Diamond Bar 8-5. The brahmas had a 5-2 lead until the 6th when the brahmas relief pitching gave up 6 runs. D-Bar's Bryan Stauffer hit 2 home runs and Corey Levier 1 homer. Starter Jake Urban pitched the first 5 innings and did well.

LA Times had rankings per position and three of our local kids were in it. De La Fuente and Arnold top five at third base and Fox at First Base. LA Times does not often give SGV kids much recognition they tend to pay more attention to SF, LA and OC. and the funny thing is these kids do not get much recognition on our local paper who tends to focus on one person who could not crack this list.

Hey Fred
There is another local tournament, Don Lugo. SH is in it. Would be better if they were in the Glendora but lets just say Coach Smith has no cojones in his body, the man runs away from competition like if it was cancer. Still is not the kids fault so give them some love.

Does anyone know the starting lineup for Amat tomorrow night?
Posted by: curious fan | February 29, 2008 7:27 PM
finally. we saw a tremendous amount of talent last year in the valle vista league and i think we all expect the same this year. but have you seen the colts? the vikings and saints are sure gonna have their hands full against these guys. they've got pitching that runs deeper than a two man rotation. oh and their hitting oh man. if you don't believe me go check them out tomorrow at noon at covina vs. blair high school. they won't disappoint.

Today I went to see Lakeside of Lake Elsinore play Yucaipa in a 1st round Chino tournament game. I figured this game would be a route however wanted to see Yucaipa's junior star Matt Davidson pitch/hit. Davidson went a easy 5 innings giving up one run and allowing 4-5 hits. At the plate he went 1-5 with a double. Yucaipa's other ace senior lhp/1b Scott Snodgress had a good game at 1b and had 3 hits. Snodgress has signed with Stanford next year. Yucaipa is loaded with good hitters/defense. The Yucaipa kids are huge with Davidson at 6'4" and Snodgress at 6'6" along with others. Davidson is on the USA junior baseball team that won the championship last year.
