Girls Basketball: Walnut wins; Amat loses

Above: Ella Rodriguez has huge game in Mustangs' win.
Ella Rodriguez scored 16 points and Kellie Komoda dropped in 14 for the Walnut High School girls basketball team, who advanced to the CIF-SS Division III-A semifinals for the first time since 1985, beating host Twentynine Palms, 64-54, on Wednesday.
Stephanie Mayekawa scored 10, and Richelle Najera chipped in with eight points as the Mustangs led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter, then cruised to the finish.
“This group of seniors is special,” Mustangs coach Lori Huckler said. “They advanced to to the quarters last year, and were disappointed they didn’t go further.
“Every night it’s been someone different, and tonight it was Ella who had the hot hand.”
Valencia Holmes and Haly Herrera each had eight points for Twentynine Palms, who finished 20-6.

Looks like Amats dynasty day are over. They really do look like the Chicas without a big girl clogging the middle like Brown did and Myrick before her. It is how they re-tool for next year but as it stands right now the days of going to the state are over. Nice Run for Amat tho. The school should be real proud of these girls.
