Top Pitchers?

| | Comments (92) |

Wish I was here last year to have a feel for some of these guys, but everything I hear suggests this being a great season for pitchers. With the top ten baseball preview coming out next week, I'd like to hear your top five or top ten rankings for hurlers.

SUPER SIX
1. Tyler Pill (Covina)
2. Tyler Garkow (Charter Oak
3. Brady Zuniga (Bishop Amat)
4. Andrew Melchor (Nogales)
5. Marc Andrade (Northview)
6. Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas)

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Found this post typing in 'domains' on Google. I was looking for some ideas for a post, and I basically wrote a short "summary" of your post. Don't worry - I gave you credit with a link :)

Larry Q. said:

If CO gets in Amats Bully early it is over. Aside from Zun. There is nothing there as far as real pitching. It is a unproven weak staff after Zun. Amats offensive run production will be up there with most, but their pitchers will be giving up lots of runs too.

Amat90 said:

BBF - What stats are you talking about, like I said if you go back to last VARSITY season you'll see that Zuniga has not pitched against any teams of quality, if the teams Amat was playing was any good it was Maverick or Eusebio that pitched. And yes Paez does have control problems and yes Mcnit does get hit hard consistently.

BBF said:

It so interesting to read these blogs. Reguarding BA pitchig.Sophmore Mc Nit does get a lot of ground balls. Is this not what baseball all about to get the outs any which way possible. Paez does not have control issues. If you have seen him you know in winter ball he gets through all teams quite easily. His fast ball and off speed are quite good. Zuniga also looks very good dominates any team that he faces. So you see if you blogers check the stats you will see that they speak for themselves.

This will be Amat's first real test in playing CO and we'll see how good this inexperienced pithching staff does in this tournament, again Zuniga is inexperienced and if you check his numbers from last year they were not against any real quality of teams and the sophmores that another poster mentioned are not ready for the level of hitting they will be facing in my opinion. Paez is a hard throwing lefty that has a real problem with control and Mcnit has been hit hard each time I've seen him throw which is just about 10 games. The ones to watch from this team are going to be Ikky, Grijalva, Alcantara, & Carrillo.

There are Travel and Pony/LL legends out their right now that do not play and who knows if these kids could have gotten to the next level or just been a good HS player and then their are the legends that play the game now and are struggling to even get in a game. When kids get to HS other subjects intrest them and their summers of travel ball greatness is just a part of life that they and their parents enjoyed but most stop playing after that. Most are still being pushed to play and they dont want to play but they play because their parents push them to. These are the ones that sit the bench and could care less.

C.J. Peters said:

Everyone misses the point here with all the Pony / LL Talk. someone called Iccky a legend of travel, well there are lots of legends of travel out there that do not even play HS baseball and have the sense to know that their chance of getting to the college level of baseball is slim and none. They work their tails off in the classroom get a high GPA and get into college instead of living a farce of a dream. Thats their right. Melchor, Zuniga,Iccky and whomever else you prople rip here, the bottom line is if they are not a senior and Iccky and Melchor are not, then the proof is in the pudding and they still have a senior season ahead of them to prove they can go to the next level reguardless of what all you scumbags say about them or any other underclassman. It is their dream and their parents at times and thats is their right, but their are not that great but that should not stop them if that LL Pony Travel DESIRE STILL BURNS IN THEM. Good for all who are chasing their dream and good for those that gave it up and went straight to work in the classroom, it is good to know they are doing something constructive. As for the rest that play video games and barely find time to do homework and are just flat out lazy to their parents and to themselfs let the ripping begin on all these type of kids, but to the athletes and the hard working student all the best and chase that dream weather in sports and in the classroom or just plain in the classroom. you are all legends if you are hardworking. hard work pays off in the end. I like all the SGV HS players and with the season just around the corner we will see who is who and the best to all. It ends after your senior year of HS sports unless you are that special one, and if you are not that special one, hats off to you for trying anyways, just go to college without sports continue to play for recreation and become a good hard working law abiding citizen.

You are missing the point, it is you who i am mocking. Travel ball, pony means nothing. if you were to spend more time asking your kid about homework he would have a better chance of going to college then through baseball.
As good as many of these kids are, most of them will only play JC.
Out of the SGV last year i thinks only two signed D1, as good as Robert was he did not get any offers that's how hard it is. Out the 08 class only two guys have signed and most likely will stay like that.
Pony and travel greatness means nothing.

delrioHB said:

What a piece of work. You mock these particular kids' success as youth players in the SGV, which continues, then completely miss the point (as in "over your head" moron). Nobody is predicting the bigs for any of these guys.

Good for you, you were an all star; but why is this about you? As your fellow Northview fan said, guys like you are an embarassment to the program.

SGV has some great young pitchers who have a chance to be D1 or D2/NAIA. Hope they all stay healthy and continue to achieve their dreams as baseball players.

NVfan said:

Dear delrioHB
I just want to let you know that i also was an allstar in little league, before the mighty greatness of your travel players. I know am in awe and over my head, before these great travel players, who more likely will be delivering my pizza in a few years while the fathers reminisce about how their kids won the triple ABC tournament.
Guys dont worry about it, the major leagues are full of 5'8 guys throwing in the low 80s, also most of them were allstars in little league. Heck i have a chance.

delrioHB said:

Hey genius NVfan, in case you haven't noticed, all of the kids doing well today in the SGV played lots of travel ball in the local area, and I was pointing out that kids like Melchor have been very good for a long time, and that things really don't change that much after about age 12. The good guys then are the good guys now. Sorry that was over your head.

You sound like a young punk who doesn't know jack. Yeaaa NV! They are the best!!!!! What a stinking nut-hugging homer!

TOO MANY DREAMERS BEFORE SEASON OOPENS, EVEYONE IS A CONTENTER, WALNUT? I AM PUKING.

delrioHB said:

Two of the better pitchers, who probably experienced the most success in travel ball and PONY of any 1-2 tandem anywhere were Melchor and Montoya with the Storm. Both are still awesome pitchers. Who cares (other than D1's and pro scouts)if Melchor is low 80's. I have personally watched several games from the coaching box when he or Jonathan threw and they painted the black as well as any major leaguer. Melchor threw a 7 inning complete game as a 14 year old where he literally did not throw a single pitch above mid thigh high and only a handful of balls in the middle of the plate. That kid is a pitcher in the truest sense of the word.

Scrimmage action: La Serna lost 2-1 against Los Alamitos, striking out 9 of their guys and allowing 4 hits. Then La Serna beat Arlington, 3-2. Had radar gun and Garret of Los Al was sitting at 89-90. LS's Burke sitting at 87-89. Most pitchers at 78-85.

Heard California beat Bishop Amat. Sonora tied one and lost one versus Cypress. How'd other teams do?

Good baseball is all over, and don't buy the hype about lots of D1 teams. A school like San Dimas is just as good as Los Al or Lakewood, etc. Maybe the bigger schools will be a bit deeper, but the starting 9, the top 2-3 pitchers, the coaching, etc. is what rules. Should be a great 2008 season

There are many quality HS pitchers in the area. Everyone is going to have thier own opinion on the top pitcher list. I think everyone can make one without tearing down another guy.

Why do people question Pill's ability when Fullerton felt strongly enough to sign him. He comes from a great fmaily. DeLaFuente is an outstanding pitcher but his future is as a position player. Zungia is a good pitcher but I only ever stated he being recruited by quite a few schools. Garcia is good kid with some good stuff but he ability to move on might be in the OF. I would hope the comments will stay positive.

Don't woory about the Amat pitching staff they will be fine. Coach Beck will do wonders with these guys. Zuniga is not that inexperienced at the varsity level. According to Maxpreps he threw 33 innings with a 1.89 era. Alcantara has been looking real good as of late. He has made a tremendous improvement as of late. Icky is a travel ball legend. If he can regain his confidence and shed a few pound he will be great. I think Grijalva is developing into a pretty good pitcher. This lefty is quite efective. Another lefty is Sophomore Paez. He is a power pitcher that needs to fine tune his control. Another Sophomore Mcnit gets groundball after groundball. A wildcard will be Carillo who has looked good as a power pitcher. Boomer is expected to be in the closer role. And don't forget about the fan favorite Howard. He wears his heart on his sleeve.

titanfan said:

I think some of you need to read Fred's initial comments at the beginning of this subject - Top Pitchers? That is a question mark, is it not? He says himself that he was not here last year and is asking people for their opinions. I don't think the pitchers he listed were put in order of how good he thought they were, he just put some names out there. So give your opinions, but don't rip on anyone else's - everyone will obviously have a different one.

SGV ALL THE WAY said:

Have to agree with Fred on this one:
Pill- Best in the valley. He might also be the best hitter in the valley (Already a Fullerton Commit)
Garkow- Not flashy but won big game at Dodgers Staidum
Zuniga- According to Mike Viera (Coach of Arsenal) he is being recruited by all schools on the west coast.
Melchor- He had a huge freshman year, so so Sophomore year. He should continue to improve under Romano
Andrade- I believe he might throw the hardest in the valley.
Ponzo- Saw him get lit up by SGV Babe Ruth at Arcadia
Delafuente- Can definitely throw gas but not too much stamina
Mier- Might be the best prosepct in the valley but not as a pitcher
Garcia- Viera is extremely high on this southpaw. He also plays a mean centerfield and first base
Macias- Was All-CIF at Cantwell. He is a horse

whiteballfever said:

Don you are fairly correct on your scouting, Melchor can throw low 80s but will live in the high 70s. That is not a power pitcher in HS.
Pill is mainly a two pitch guy.

From all these guys Delafuente and Pill will consistent throw above 87 and ocasionally hit 90-91. But who know they are older this year and perhaps faster.

Don said:

Scouting on Melchor is a “B” fastball, (low 80's), with good command. Challenges with four seamer and throws off speed for effect. Does not throw deuce for strike.

Pill is touted as a four pitch “gamer” with a “B+” fastball and a good high school breaking ball.

I would be surprised to see any pitcher discussed here throw 90 mph routinely.

whiteballfever said:

Hey Don
Melchor is a finese pitcher not a power pitcher.
Pill is mainly a fastball
pitcher with a decent curve, not great control. He did lose some big games last year.
Some people here talk about pitcher throwing in the 90s and they exagerate. There are only two guys who can touch low 90s and not consistent, Pill and Dela fuente who may be slightly faster.
Comment by "r u kidding me???????" is correct i dont think anyone who knows local players would dispute this.

The last time Wilson made noise in baseball was a few years ago when Woodward was the coach. By the way, anyone have an update on how Tiffany's surgery went?)

Don't know much about Wilson and their new coach but I do know that Pill is a stud and Merrill is an underrated coach.

Good Post BBN,

If I may, my take on yours:

Garkow, Pill, and Ponzo are all staff aces; expected to provide a W every week and fill in where needed with a solid 1-2 innings of “stopper” work.

De la Fuente, Mier, Melchor, and Andrade were all fastball pitchers last year, (Dimitri the best of the bunch). When they needed a strike, the hitter saw a heater. They all were hurt by that at one time or another.

Didn't see Smith last year so I will reserve any comment. Saw only three innings from Zuniga and that's not enough for me to call him an ace.

Tyler Buffington (SHHS), Nico Calderero (Bonita), Brandon Scharf (C O), and Noah Northrup (C O), all should have seasons worth following.

I don't know if Jake Bailey is the best Catcher in the Valley since there are several pretty good ones to watch this season but he is for sure a fine ballplayer, good kid and comes from a nice family.

South Hills had pretty good luck last season with a Freshman at SS, Christian Ibarra.

Let's get those fields drained for tomorrow's scrimmages, we only have 24 hours before the rain comes back.

Noble Observer said:

No doubt Melchor is good, but what support is he going to get. Nogales does not have much besides that one good pitcher. He will need run support and he single handedly can shut down a team but he is only one player and cannot pitch every game. I do not see them winning games that Melchor does not pitch in. It is a three team race with So. Hills, West Covina and Walnut (yes Walnut they have a team this year).

whiteballfever said:

BaseballNut had a much better report then Fred, but my order would be a little different.
1-Garkow beat everyone he had to beat, when it mattered. Great pitcher not necesarily best stuff.
2-This spot could either go to Pill or De La Fuente. Both hard throwers and all around players with scholarships, (fullerton/Pepperdine)
3-Melchor again a good pitcher but does carry the heat of Dela/Pill
4-Ponzo
5-A Los Altos Pitcher can remember his name, throws hard and control.
6-Andrade, was mainly a closer so lets see if he last as a starter.

Zuniga needs to prove himself on varsity.
Fred are you familiar with these players?

BASEBALL NUT PITCHER POLL

1.Tyler Pill (Covina)---Dual threat,as a Titan I dont think they will DH for him.
2.Kevin Ponzo (San Dimas)---When I asked my son "who is the best pitcher you have ever faced"?, this was his reply. And he has faced almost everyone on list.Only a Junior.
3.Tyler Garkow (Charter Oak)---MVP of DIV IV playoffs, first team all CIF.And to think two years ago cut by Henley at Glendora. Great move, similiar to leaving pitcher in for ten runs against Damien.
4.Andrew Melchor (Nogales)---Along with Pill,Da la fuente and Andrade hardest throwers of the bunch.
5.J. Mier (Bonita)---Confused about spelling of first name, not confused about talent. Cannot be left of the list.
6.Dimitri Da la fuente (South Hills)---Same as above, too talented to be left of list.My suggestion,Coach give him the ball and leave him alone.
7.Brady Zuniga (Bishop Amat)---I am reluctant to put him here, however, he is ace of powerful club, limited varsity experience, will get to see him March 1st vs CO I imagine.
8.Marc Andrade (Northview)---Pure Heat. Was limited to reliever role last year, can he go the whole game? TEX give me info!
9.Justin Smith (Covina)---Now some of you are saying WHO? Grades kept him from playing at the end of year and hurt team. I am sure he will hit books this year.Southpaw provides Colts with strong 1-2 punch. He has the Baseball Nut Seal of Approval.
10.Blogger's Choice--- You put your pitcher you like here. Jancleas (Glendora)? Garcia (Damien)? Schaarf (Charter Oak)? Make your choice and your own list and send it in. Let us know about good pitchers flying under the radar.Good Luck to all teams and lets hope mother nature lets the scrimmages proceed tomorrow.

BASEBALL NUT NUGGETS; Many bloggers have mentioned about Bishop Amat and DV and other nonsense vs. D IV. Bishop Amat historically has done extremely well at henderson field, beat a very strong NV team 6-2 and B Nut is not among the BA haters. They are solid, well coached and did beat a very good Monrovia team for title....A blogger recently talked about NV's fine catcher and BA has two(!) D1 prospects at that position. I offer my best catcher in the valley,Jacob Bailey from CO. Not much press about this kid, he hits well and is only a junior. I would put D. Severin (Covina),in that class if he could get the ball to second quicker, slow release is his only downfall, sound technical catcher and great hitter...another blogger says "how can you put pill ahead of garkow,he beat him head to head", garkow was chased in the 4th or 5th,ortega and schaarf completing the close, hard fought victory...schaarf specifically put out the fire with runners on 1st and 2nd and no out in top of seventh...Covina has plans to start a freshman at SS,remember this name Matt Munoz...How tough is the VVL gonna be this year?WOW!Say what you will about coach at San Dimas, but I drove by the practice well after school ended and they were working hard, doing good sound defensive drills, their achilles heel.

Send in your own pitcher list and please put in any ommisions. Good Luck to all teams. PLAY BALL!

Amat90 said:

The pitching staff at Amat is relatively young and inexperienced, but should be very good as a unit. Zuniga is the most experienced of the group, but Ikky is the sleeper and is going to suprise people he has a good fastball and his breaking and off speed pitches are just great, there is also Justin Grijalva, and Steven Carrillo, and There are a couple of others that should at some point this season make their debuts. Watch for Anthony Cuevas and Joey Fitzgerald, and these are all Jouniors. This staff will be very good for the next couple of seasons.

titanfan said:

It was hard to read your post, but I think you must be referring to "Anthony" Hidalgo. Michael Hidalgo is a senior at Amat right now. Adam Simon was drafted by the Pirates, but the only info. I could find on him right now was from short-season - anyone know what happened to him? There were a lot of big expectations out of that Amat class, but as far as I know, most of them didn't really end up doing much after high school. Correct me if I'm wrong.

its simple u you want yo find out who is the best pitcher and pitching staff in the valley just look at who has won the glendora tourney the past 5 years amat, look who they have had adam simon, randy serrato, pete lavin, maverick olivares, chris eusebio, michael hidalgo, all great pitchers so if u really want to argue amat has had and probably will for awhile have the best pitching staff hands down and all the stuff about ikky, zuniga, and hauer, who cares who does what im pretty sure if they all pitch and win cif thats all thats gonna matter

In the Whittier/La Habra area are several guys who have competed for years against the SGV guys mentioned. At Sonora, JJ Cacioppo and Steven Cerda make probably the best 1-2 combo in the entire area. Two guys with 100's of high level travel games as kids and 85-88 mph heat with great command. Cal has a good lefty in Senior Tyler Liebert. St. Paul has a sophomore in Gabe Encinas who is about 6'3" and touches 90 mph. Ben Burke at La Serna had a pretty good year as a sophomore and sits at 85-88 mph.

All of those years of the Hurricanes, Storm, Bombers, etc. over in the SGV, and the O'keiki Mustangs, Placentia Mustangs, and others over in the OC border area have resulted in lots of experienced, quality pitchers and position players. A great time to be into HS hardball!

Los Altos will be very good this year because they have the best coaches. Felipe Aguilar is my hero!

nv fan - I know, it takes forever. There were a lot of double and triple posts on the last baseball thread. After having done it myself, I realized that you have to just click it and wait! But I guess if you really want to get your point across, you can keep hitting the "post" button! LOL

sorry only needed to say my message one time - the damn thing is so slow i didn't know if it took my message the first or second time. sorry again

watch out for andrade at nv, rodriguez got so much of the attention for all that he accomplised -as he should have- that andrade was kind of in the background but that guy is awesome and exciting to watch. the vikings are deep in pitching this year, just a talented group of kids and so welled coached by Murph. we are going to have a good year

I realize this blog is about who everyone thinks are the best pitchers in the area - no one will ever agree on that - but keep in mind that a pitcher isn't the whole team. You can have an awesome pitcher, but if he has no defense behind him or if the offense isn't producing, he won't be able to win many games, will he? So don't start with the "who beat who" in a certain game - too many factors to consider in a "team" win besides the pitcher.

I meant to say Ronnie Blagg did that as a Sophomore

I would put Ronnie Blagg on this list.

ERA 1.22
IP 51.2

AND did that as a Junior

Zuniga a good pitcher but hie problaby pitched in Varsity for maybe 3 games?

De La Fuente, maybe the hardest throwing arm, a dominant pitcher, ace of SH not in here?

Pill ahead of Garkow? who won the playoff game when they faced eachother?

Fred i donth think you have done your homework, get familiar with these players

Snow, Scharf, and Northrup round out a very good Charter Oak staff, (more where they came from, too).

Dimitri De La Fuente and Tyler Buffington at South Hills.

Nico Calderero, Jio Mier, and Terry Paredez at Bonita.
