Wrestling: Masters of the Mat?

South Hills senior Thomas Williams, right, hopes to continue his road towards a second CIF state championship.

The road to the CIF State wrestling championships makes its final stop this weekend as 39 area competitors travel to Carter High School in Rialto for the CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet. The top placers at this weekend's meet will advance to the state championships, which are scheduled for next weekend at Bakersfield's Rabobank Arena.
Who will advance?
I like the 12 competitors who scored divisional titles last weekend, plus a few others:
Here's the champions list:
Northview - Jacob Delgado (103 pounds), Steven Salinas (112), Frank Martinez (130), Jesse Cruz (145), Robert Alcantar (215).
San Dimas - Angel Garcia (125).
South Hills - Thomas Williams (119), Josh Pearson (171).
Bonita - David Stupplebean (145).
Bishop Amat - Andrew Ortega (125), Julian Silva (215).
Rosemead - Adrian Marquez (130).
Who do you like?

Silva and Ortega, props to these two Bishop Amat Wrestlers. Good luck men, you two will do very well this weekend. All Lancers come out and support this weekend. These two Lancers will come out fresh, strong and tough. I see them advancing. Julian skys the limit here take it to them you can do it!. Ortega this is what you gave up football for it is your time shine. GO AMAT!

How would an individual wrestler win a dual meet?

BACK TO SGVFANHISTORY, CALEB FLORES MAY HAVE PLACED AT CIF BUT HE DIDN'T TAKE THE CIF DUALS MEET. BUT YOU ARE RIGHT HE DID PLACE ALL FOR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL

To respond to Trevino, Caleb Flores from Northview also won CIF all four years in High School and is one of 13 people in history to place at state all four years

I say Alcantar all the way, congrats by the way Robert you are a great role model for all young men coming after you at NV!

first of all these certain PARENTS need to calm down. let the kids actions do the talking and not you.how will arguing on this help the kids? so in my mind all yall are stupid for getting into disputes over these things and let the kids be. and congrats to andrew ortega on back to back individual cif champ

Remeber on of them will have to face Zuniga (Schurr) and Knowles(Calvery Chapel). Both will be TOUGH matches for anyone.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think we should be proud we have a group this talented to represent the SGV and their respective schools. I know Silva has worked hard to get where he is and I am sure Alcanatar has done the same. Both of these kids are studs and champions already. good luck NV see you Fri.

Let the kid's decide it on the mat. No need to talk trash about either one of these kid's by anyone. I can only speak about Alcantar and say he has taken it to another level these last couple of weeks against some tough competition. It would be good to see another exciting match between the two.

for one thing who is in whos head alcantar does not care about silva or anyone else he wrestles he just goes out and handles his opponents like he will do at masters revenge factor ha better yet confidence factor well i am done are you? just know after masters no one will hear from you advantage:alcantar 3rd period desision

Viking Fan

Triple OT in the 5 counties and Alcatar is going to shut up the trash talkers. Silva is in his head and Alcatar knows it and does not want to see Silva again. He got pushed to the brink in that match. They are both very good but Silva has the revenge factor and will come out on top. As you say Alcatar may get eliminated along the way just as you say Silva can. Advantage:Silva.

Vike fan,

Who is talking trash? Alcantar has the wins right now. Did you see Silva/Alcantar match at 5-counties? That was as close as you can get. triple OT! I think both these young men have a GREAT chance at advancing to the state meet. I for one am hoping for another exciting match the next time they meet(masters)? I will be there. Good luck to both of them.

keep on dreaming big blue same result as last time alcantar over silva maybe even worse and its not like alcantar has been sitting around this time he will leave no doubt this time to shut all trash talkers up thats if silva is even lucky enough to make it to the end. ADVANTAGE:ALCANTAR

Congrats to all Northview wrestler's.A few others were also close to going to masters, I'm confident they will get there next year. The SGV will be well represented this weekend-expect to see a large group going on to Bakersfield in two weeks.
Steve Ramirez, push your bosses for some more space in this paper-nice report on the eastern ss individuals. I am sure there was more to report, maybe you can post more on this blog.
Thanks

Julian Silva will not be denied this time around. He is for real this time. His focus is where it has to be right now. Watch how he takes over this time around.

Congrats to all the champions and qhalifiers! your hard work has begun to pay off. Keep it up! The SS Masters meet is going to be an exciting tourney. I am proud that we have soo much local talent going. I wish all the wrestlers luck. The 215 weight class is STACKED! any predictions?

FYI, to all the fans out there (not just parents) Did you all know that WRESTLING is the number 2 money making sport in CIF (Basketball is #1) but WRESTLING is #2 by a wide margin. So its interesting that the coverage wrestling gets is garbage. Great human interest story in the OC register about one the Los Al wrestlers who has Down Syndrome. Absolutely great story. If wrestling makes so much money for CIF why is the coverage so bad?

Masters! Humm it would be great to be 1st at Masters, however as crazy as the Southern Section is as far as wrestling goes all you need to do is place in the top nine and stay healthy to make it to state. There will be 8 wrestlers from South Hill HS as well as many others. My wish is that they all do well, and no one gets hurt.

i like all of them. i feel all the matches are going to be great. I read that Northview had all 14 weights go to CIF individuals and that they have 9 going to Masters. Now thats pretty impressive!! Congrats to Angel Garcia of SD

heavyweight frank ayala from wilson will be very hard to take out!

Im liking Angel Garcia of San Dimas he is only the third person in the SS to take CIF all four years of high school and the only one to ever do it in the SGV, it will be hard for him but i know he can do it.

I like Julian Silva's chances. If he should face Northviews Alcantar again I think the results will be different and Silva nudges him this time. They are pretty even but it will be tough to beat Silva two times in row. Advantage Silva.

I like Williams, but it won't happen again this year. He won't get passed Santa Fe's Marcus Orona, who already topped him this year 3-2.
