#1 fan if Bonilla is not good enuf to play SS why did they start him vs Bonita today and not Garcia, altho Garcia is swing a pretty good bat rigt now. I am looking forward to seeing Garcia start a game pitching. Louie R. blew the SH game. good to see Cruz at second today.

Sorry to tell you Bonilla doesn't have a arm for SS , and a lot of drop balls last year.
They need to get Lee back in the outfield and put Garcia at SS. He can play deep in the hole and he has the arm for it. I agree with Moving cruz to 2nd and bring up Kerr to V. Harrison needes to say on JV. This way he will get some playing time.
Why is JV practice with V. They need all the hitting the can get. 44 kids is to many at one practice. Move JV over with the freshmen.

Cruz is not all that by the way. still lacking maturity, Bonilla should be our starting SS. move Cruz to second or third drop Iwasaki,Naboa and Ruvacalba down to JV and bring up Kerr and Harrison to Varsity. Grades are out soon and I understand players will be on the outside looking in, Cruz being one of them. Still a strong team and will beat Nogales Thurs.

Walnut is looking good, but need to tell cruz to move to his right. The hole is to big. Have not seen him make a clean play yet.

Walnut 3-1 and looking good. They will be the second team from San Antonio this year behind So Hills. Coach Hoff is making all the right moves.

The Glendora Tournament is being played at Henderson Field, roughly on the corner of Sierra Madre and Lorraine. From glendora high school go north on Valley Center, west on Sierra Madre and follow the lights. Approx. 1-2 miles from the High School.

Amat 73, Glory days? man SH has won more Football CIF then you have, and in baseball most of these programs have had their Glory and we do it with our local kids not from a 50 mile radius. Private schools should only compete with privates because unfair advantage yet you suck in football and you pound your chest over winning a baseball CIF in Div5. You pay $600 a month to go to LP that is average in academics, nothing special. You guys are the equivalent of high class wanna be, when in fact is just a bunch truck drivers who are paying $600 into a five million dollar Gym. Man did somebody made a killing!

Amat 73, I know what you mean, I have went thru it for some time now and it does make me upset that people can get so low and bring out the trash over a sport game, a religion or a area where a school is located. I do not live in La Puente and I do not see the boundries. My family and Amat have special ties to teachers and administrators I would not change a thing. I am sure all the public schools around Amat have their strong points and it is what you make of your surroundings that make you the individual that you become. Two wrongs do not make a right so try not to let it get to you and play down to the level of their evilness. We are Amat and we stand for better than that. Peace to you my brother, enjoy the game.

Northview and Amat reached the championship game because they both happen to be the two best teams in the tournament. Of course I am biased and will say that Northview is better but the truth is if these two teams met 10 times they would probably split 5-5. I know from speaking to the boys that they have a lot of respect for their opponents. The boys are very familiar with Reyes, Seymour, Mistone, Fox, Brady, and Icky. The boys will never talk bad about the individual players at Amat. Murph has taught them to respect their opponents. Now if only us adults could act in the same manner. Good luck to both teams. I hope Northview wins but I will not be disappointed either way.

I totally agree with you. I am sometimes guilty of some edgy replies only for the fact that some people do take it a little to far when it comes to AMAT. The hatered out there towards us is nothing new. Been hearing it since my days there and my kids have had a taste of it also. No harm meant but sometimes it gets old on what people say about the school and the area.

I was talking about the starting pitchers for both respective teams,Tyler Garkow and Brady Zuniga. From what I heard from the BA fan's the second pitcher was a young man (sophmore),who had not pitched at the varsity level until facing Charter Oak. He looked great, as did the whole Amat team. I almost put NV as co 1's with amat, but amat handled them last year 6-2 and has beat CO and Glenora. They are also two time defending champion's of the tourney,and like a heavyweight title bout the champ has to get knocked out to lose the title. Will Nothview deliver the knockout punch on saturday night? Show up and find out. Good luck to both teams and PLAY BALL!

1.BISHOP AMAT---Looking for the three-peat at Henderson,can they cool down hot NV bats?
2.Northview---Number one and two get to settle it on the field. Sorry fred, I am going with the vikings in a close game 5-3. They are pounding good, solid teams.
3.San Dimas---Speaking of pounding good teams; I thought 9-2 victory over Yucaipa was a typo. How good is the VVL this year? REAL GOOD.
4.South Hills---With de la fuente and talent level can compete with any team at any level.Doing well at Don Lugo as usual.
5.Covina---I try to be objective but they have the best 1-2 pitching rotation in the valley. I may get a few arguments from SH and BA.
6.Charter Oak---Against BA 6? errors, vs glendora 4? errors? This is not typical charger baseball. Coach Tiffany may be missed more than expected. Number one teams dont get beat 14-1.
7.Bonita---In over their heads with northview, still a very talented team. May jell at end of year like Charter Oak did last year.
8.Glendora---Despite 1-2 record still very good team and should not be dropped out of top ten. Lost 2-1 heartbreaker to Amat, and another 2-0. Destroyed CO and is my #8 pick despite poor record.
9.Damien---Persati and company rollin along, get to replay Colts in Claremont championship. 1-0 victory was disputed last year because ball rolled under fence and was not ruled correctly. Baseball nut knows because Baseball nut was there!
10.Nogales---Much like covina continues to show they are not a one man team.

Baseball Nut Nuggets....What a great turnout for the Bishop Amat vs. Charter Oak game... Zuniga and Garkow both pitched well. Charter Oak kicked the ball around and did not give it's pitcher any support and Amat proved it owns this field until somebody proves otherwise.... I've watched most of the games at the Glendora Tournament this year. I have a son that played ball at Charter Oak a few years back and I enjoy going to that tournament every year because of the amount of good teams that play in it. Amat and Northview are the two best and it should be a tight game. But the team I've been impressed with is Glendora. They have two solid starting pitchers (Janclaes and Plutko) and play good D (zero errors in 3 games I believe). Roundtree is an incredible hitter. Layton and Regis have hit the ball hard at times. They have an average offense, which may hurt them in the end. They could have beaten Amat but they left 10 guys on base. They embarrassed CO 14-1. They lit up Northrup, who pitched the semifinal game last year. If they can get hitting from players other than Roundtree, Layton, or Regis, they have a shot to win the Sierra League title.

Take it easy "Amat parents are so classy" That post could have been sent by a NV,CO,DR,AL,etc,etc fan for all you know. Although it was funny. You act like this blog really means something. RELAX

All the people in here fueling the fire of hate between these Amat kids and Northview kids are complete idiots. Most of these kids I have seen grow up in Pony and Travel and have been teamates before or played against one another and have the utmost respect for one another. RJ Arnold, Ickky Torres, Arron Orona, Bryan Seymore, Tommy Reyes, These kids as 11 and 12 yr. olds were representing the SGV and tearing up teams from the Inland Empire to the SFV all the way up to tournaments in San Jose and Cooperstown NY. Thet now are playing against one another at the HS level and knickleheads come in here and stir up this our school against your school BS. Let these boys take it to the field Saturday compete at the highest, have fun while doing it and may the best team win. After all the dust settles win or lose both programs have proved to be bonifide winners and should get the respect they deserve. The key word is they are young men prefoming for us their parents and adult backers. As adults we should all appreciate the level of success they are having and enjoy it with out the uneccessary bashing of each others represented School. SGV Baseball there is no better place to play. Here's my take Fred. I recently retired and I can tell you this....THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!

In about 5 years you won't recognize ANY of the Foothill Communities. It'll look like Baldwin Park in about 10 years from Claremont to San Dimas. The McMasions wil always be there in the Hills but the flat lands will hemorage. Prices will drop 20% before the end of the year...conservatively! And before this is all over prices will recede to pre 1998 prices. Best questamites are that the worst hasn't even begun! I hear 3 years if EVERYTHING GOES PERFECT and to prepare for a 10 year slide back to stabilize the housing and banking market. Is that crazy or what? I think it will be 3 hard years but what do I know?

Over the past couple of years I've noticed a demographic change in the SGV and IE that was built on fake credit, cheap loans and money grubbing developers. WHERE IS THE INFASTRUCTURE TO HANDLE ALL THAT HUMANITY???

ALL those mortgages will come due pretty soon and the foreclosures that will come will make the Depression Era financial mess look like a pimple on the butt of this once raging economy. AND CHANGE WILL COME! You're seeing it everywhere....my BMW dealer told me they get at least 5 lease returns a DAY @ ASSAEL BMW! When they would average 1 a week before and see more and more 7 series than they can handle. Faking the Funk Days are over gentlemen!

The City of La Verne is experiencing this demographic and economic shift as evidenced by the building of almost 20+ portables at the local Middle School where once they had beautiful open grassy lawns for kids to play...no more. Combine that with the more than 120 homes in foreclosure with over 400 in Preforeclosure for a city of like La Verne? Houses are sitting like never before, For Lease and For Rent signs are popping up everywhere! Seen some of the abandoned REO homes lately? Disgusting! People were in WAY OVER THEIR HEADS! Hey but they had to have granite counter tops and brand new cars! What do they have now....NOTHING! iving with Grandma! That's what!

When you build an entire economy on the "EQUITY" of your home...well that's a recipe for disaster. Carpenters, Roofers, Hard scape/Soft scape, RE guys, furniture, adult toys, cars, Sales men, ect. ect ect, ect...all based on the hope of keeping up with the GONZALEZES...the Joneses left town and are now in Orange County by the way... and are experiencing much of the same. 4 C21 offices closed in La Verne alone in the last 6 months! THAT'S ALOT OF JOBS AND THAT'S A HUGE ECONOMIC BLOW THE THE SGV AND THE IE ECONOMY!

It's a GLOBAL CREDIT and CASH FLOW problem people. $140 for a barrel of oil is a possibilty....so no more SUV market, school loans and university openings are shrinking while demand and costs are exploding compounded by a madrush for higher education for better paying jobs...the bottom fell out while we were all living it up. STAY IN SCHOOL...now means GET A DEGREE! and no I don't mean high school.

So the Tribune, like many other industries, will make tremendous cut backs. I'm sorry that our politicians decided to centralize our information resources and funnel the same old company line, while NO ONE was minding the store. But if you've traveled abroad or have friends in Europe, or Australian for that matter, they will tell you with disbelief and a touch of dispair....THE DOLLAR IS WORTHLESS!

So spend your time getting the most out of your athletic kid but remember this EDUCATION IS THE ONLY COMMODITY THAT WILL MATTER WHEN THE PARTY'S OVER. AND THIS PARTY IS O.V.E.R.!

So what does this diabribe have to do with sports? Well everything and nothing. Keep things in perspective. It's only a game....life and an education are what matters most. Lettermen jackets fade, trophies tranish and break, newspaper clippings yellow with time, those si$$ies, weak guys, nerds, geeks, brainiacs, soft kids, book worms, punks, can't cut its...well they will be the BMOC soon enough...wait...it's ALWAYS BEEN THAT WAY! Good kid, above average athlete and basketball player but where did he shine the most....that's right...in the classroom. That where he put the lessons of sports to use. Hard work, work ethic, team play, setting goals,fair play, integrity, honor, commitment, focus, determination,disappointment, getting up, fighting back, being gracious as both a victor and a competitor, holding your head high and leaving the field knowing you did your best. Mentoring. Learning. Crafting.Becoming. Being. Standing tall against all odds.

So next time you want to puff out your collective chest and bag on the kid that "hurts the team" remember no one will really remember the BMOC in 10/20 years unless he distinguishes himself when his playing days are over. Bill Bradley comes to mind.

Sorry Fred, but Tribune's Team Bishop Amat hasn't faced the likes of Northview. C. Oak, Glendora, and Colony haven't threatened Amat like the Northview offense will do. Their three opponents have been iffy and they've had close games with two of them. All 3 Northview opponents came into season with good reputations and Bonita and Alta Loma beat good teams in the tournament before being throttled by the Vikes. Vikes win the tourney.

I ripped Ickky and So Hills Tyler Buffington when they played travel with the Hurricanes and I will rip them again. They are good pitchers, but very hittable, especially Ickky. Unless Ickky has gotten better since then but all he had back then was a fastball and a weak curve but most of my hitting came off his fastball.

Ickky proved he can pitch at the varsity level, and even tho it was against Colony he threw very well yesterday. This could be the surprise pitcher for Bishop Amat this year.

Well, Amat 84. I have seen Fresno State and Usc are those JC schools. Please when you have a kid who can pitch 96 miles an hour. Wow, Who are these people beating up on the Amat Boys? Have they looked at the stats for Brady and Mcnitt. The kids are sub 1 ERA. playing against and WHIPPING THE B***s of the best teams in the Area. Joe AMAT needs to relax and realize how great this AMAT ballteam is and is going to be. These kids are only Sophomores and Juniors WOW!!! How many scholarships are going to come to this team. I have been to two games and there are scouts everywhere. It is a beautiful thing to see for the kids that are on the team. They seem like a tight knit group and it is SCARY how GREAT this team could be.

This tournament is loaded with ballers, with 5 of the OC top ten teams in it. DBHS beat #7 Dana Hills in game 2, beat JW North in the game 3, and they square off tomorrow against #8 Canyon.

They have played in this tournament for 20 plus years, because thats how they roll....afraid of no one! Way to go Brahmas!

Rollie, wow I certainly didnt mean anything negative against Covina or their apparent win today. And I dont think my post is at all taking away from their victory. Everybody is so unbelievably sensitive on here. Im a Vikings fan and was just giving some info that I knew of the opponent today. Los Osos is not a team from the SG Valley area and may not be known to many on this blog. I dont even know the other coach or the current coach, just info that I'm aware of. Settle down and enjoy the Vikings win!

Honk, Why not give the Covina Boys some credit for the win instead of airing your love for that foul mouthed a-hole who coached LO before. Covina came out and smashed the ball today! Pill pitched a great game against some quality players and I don't think the other coach had anything to do with that!!! Covina Love!

Los Osos is VERY talented but VERY poorly coached. They have some outstanding athletes including Isaac Galloway, projected to be a high rounder in this year's draft. If Covina holds on to the win it will be a quality one against some good kids. Los Osos has lost at home in the first round of the playoffs back to back seasons after going to the div 2 semis in their second year of existence under a different coach. I guess the coach didnt see eye to eye with the admin and left after that season and now they have some longtime district knucklehead in there. This will be a good gauge of how tough Pill will be this season. Hopefully they can win it! Go Covina, finish the deal!

Remember that this is coming from someone who, a mere few days ago was an "amat apologist" that would say anything to make the school sound good. I always counter that with being an "amat realist" that deals simply in facts. Not opinions, feelings, and no loud-mouth predictions or other acts of bravado. This is not the place where you will hear how amat *will do* what you will read is how we've done. So since this is a baseball thread, so far so good - but two games and much work to be done. Big game coming up against a very good Northview team or Alta Loma if they happen to upset the Vikings-but I'll take a win against Colony right now. Wish I could be there.

Now on to your point regarding one sentence in a pretty long post, answering some ones question about the perceived "politics" at a private school. Apparently you took offense to a basketball comment - so we'll switch gears. There is no way that anybody that has been close to that situation can stick up for the present basketball coach. That just shows how far removed you are from the situation. Stand up? That's about all he does is "stand up" at the end of the bench. Does he coach the team or does Wiard? They'd certainly be better if they just quit the charade and named Wiard the coach of the boys AND the girls.

Ask the kids, or the families, who have transferred out what they think. Ask the kids who have quit what they think? Ask the players how he treats them? Or ask the kids or the football players that no longer come out why that is so. Ask the football players that used to come to games with signs calling for his removal. A "stand up guy" inspires that reaction on campus?

I'm the first to say that the administration leaves something to be desired, but his relationship with MSGr and the previous VP is why he's their so he should thank the lucky stars that they are less than stellar. And they were there when he got there. So if there are any politics to be found - it might be there.

Look the guy has taken the program way down the tubes. No one can dispute that He took over a team that in the previous few years had won a CIF Championship, went to the quarterfinals, and had a bunch of really young players with a bunch of potential. He's downgraded the schedule from among the toughest to laughable by playing teams that amat would never have put on the schedule. he's done so in hopes of getting a few wins to qualify for the playoffs - and it still hasn't worked.

We are a school that prides ourself in athletic success and just built a 5 million dollar gym to play basketball in!?! On what level is that acceptable? Not at amat and not the way that baseball or football has been handled. He shouldn't get a free pass either.

The bottom line is he's had 4 years and that might be 4 years too many. amat used to beat him up when he was the coach at st paul - and he was winless in league and didn't make the playoffs for a few several years there before he came to amat. I'm just trying to figure that one out and my hypothesis that you took exception to is the only logical explanation.

With all of the self-imposed and external pressure to win at any school that strives to be successful - any parent, booster, fan, or player that thinks that ANY coach would play ANY player that he doesn't TRULY believe gives the team the best chance to win is delusional.

Now you may disagree with the decisions, but rest assured that what you see on the field is what the COACH thinks is the best opportunity to be as good as they can be.

Some coaches think that "paying your dues" is a good tiebreaker if all other things are equal - others think that if it's even - the younger player will be around longer and have a bigger "upside".

Does anyone, really, believe that any coach - particularly one under the microscope like at Amat - would do anything that would hurt his chances on the field? At places like that it could mean your job! Ask Verti! (although I think our basketball coach must have some "blackmail" info on MSgr - how he's still around no one knows)

My friend told me that my name and even my decription was put on this blog. And as flattered as I am I really don't care about baseball. As long as my son gets good grades he can do whatever he wants. I would have rather had him in another sport. But it was his choice. Ickky should be given that opportunity to catch, Boomer is doing both , so why not. If it should come as surprise to some that Iccky cannot pitch at the varsity level yet then he may become the next catcher Amat is looking for this year and next year. There are not three catchers walking Amats halls or else they would be out there. I dont know his name but there is one catcher I hear that played travel with Reyes, Ickky and Seymore and he is not playing for Amat.

Anybody who knows anything about the kids in the valley know that the two best teams are Amat and Northview. I believe both teams can compete in any division. All of these kids have either played together at one time or against each other. This will be a great game of baseball when it happens. In the end the boys will still be friends and the only one who be talking trash is all the bloggers who never played the game!!!

You are correct, the Championship game is Saturday. I also agree that any of these team (Amat, NV, CO) will be at or near the top at the end of the season.

hey amat 90, i would love for your prediction to come true BUT isn't the championship game saturday night?? i have to agree with earlier blog - man it's way too early in season for ANYONE to start the victory parade. Good to see NV looking good so far but i guarantee teams like CO will finish better than their start.

Who cares who's #1 at this point? Although Amat is not hitting the ball all that well, they're still winning and at the end of the day that is all that matters. As far as Ikky goes he is one hell of a catcher and still throws out baserunners and should be given a chance at some point this season. It looks like the team to watch out for is Northview, I know a few of the boys from this team and they are loaded. Hopefully Amat and NV meet up on Monday for the Championship, should be a great game.

Covina will have a wake up call today whaen they face Los Osos from Rancho Cucamonga. If they get past them they will face Damien.
There are week teams in this tourney but those games are over so let's see what they really have by weeks end? Mr. Colt should have waited until Saturday to chime in on the blog.

The vvl is dominating at every turn there's no doubt covina 22 runs in 2 games 20 for northview in 2 games and san dimas I'm not possitive about... man can't wait for league to start... next friday covina vs san dimas first game of league garentee all eyes will be there

Your right covina isn't playing the best teams in the world.. But if you havnt read up they have outscored 22-4.. I'd say that's enough reason to blog.. And its not covinas fault it isn't in that tourny.. And don't mention bonita they got smashed by northview

I should add that I didnt go to the La Puente game and hence didnt see Justin Smith pitch but I heard he did very well, I felt I needed to add that since I mentioned how well Tyler Pill pitched in the post below against Blair...

BTW Steve Wilson closed out the last inning of the Blair game and pitched well too, good job Steve...

To answer the question about Ikky being a catcher the answer is yes he was, when he was in travel ball the kid was automatic when throwing out runners trying to steal... Enjoyed watching him catch but man he can throw heat while on the mound also so dont count him out...

Regarding the Colts I have to ask why there hasnt even been a box score in the Trib? They are in the Claremont tournament and as mentioned above have won their first 2 games against Blair and La Puente... Definately not powerhouses but quality wins are still wins and Pill looked awesome on the mound against Blair...

On another note isnt it a little early to take GHS out of the top 10??? Just my opinion...

Here Amat gets 2 wins and they are the talk of the SGV once again. Back in the NO.1 spot for the Tribune. Watch out Fred they may say you are playing favorites. Not bad for a low level D5 private school. Allot to prove for Amat I will not deny, but they have looked decent and will only get better barring no major injuries, it is a long season. As far as Boomer and the catching position what happened to David Precicado last years backup catcher? is he even playing anymore.? McClannahan is young so what are the choices but Boomer. Here is where, if still at Amat Kevin Bonilla makes this team even better than what it is .. All hindsight now that Kevin is gone to Chino Hills where I hear he is not even playing baseball, this his senior season. What a waste of talent. I understand Iccky was once a catcher and there are three really good catchers walking the halls of Amat not even playing for the baseball team. Does not matter this Amat team will survive and only get better. Heck they have not even got comfortable with each other yet and their breakout game is on it's way. Look out for this team as soon as it jells.

2 games in and where's the offense comments are relatively on mark. The offense has not been there. Small ball is fine in certain situations, but seeing guy's trying to drag bunt who have no business doing it is actually FUNNY. Bottom line, offense was going to be led by Reyes/Fox anyway. This will continue. Mistone will hit the average pitching they'll see all year as will a few other players. Seymore is swinging it well. Rest of OF is NOT. There are other hitters on the bench who should be getting their shot for sure. The entire line up will produce big numbers once they get into their normal schedule and face average pitching.

In first two games, they have NOT faced avg pitching which should be noted. Garkow is above average HS pitcher (not high level next level, but above avg curr level hs), Plutko is a plus pitcher and trust me will become HEAVY prospect over next 18 months. So Amat's offense did what most expect it to do against very good pitching and that is struggle. However, they survived the gut check and did what they needed to do to get the V's.

But there are some bats on the bench who deserve a shot. Although, vs Colony everyone in line up whoever they are is going to look great as that team is weak.

All the talk about AMAT before this tournament was about the lack of pitching and how they wouldn't need to shut teams down because of the runs they will score. Thank God for their pitching cause that so called high powered offense is hanging its wins on 2 hats, Reyes and Fox. Mistone is pressing cause he hasn't signed anywhere, Brady needs to stick to pitching and Boomer shouldn't even be in the line up.
Nieto, drop Mistone down in the 8 spot so he can see better pitches, Tell Brady he is a pitcher only! and you will be better off with any other catcher on your staff other than Boomer. Whatever promises you made to Bommer were wasted cause he ain't getting it done.
GO AMAT!!! Let's hope Nieto does something to this line up cause they spend tooooo much time bunting and not enough time swinging. Let's Go!!!!!
