Baseball: Still Northviewtiful at the top

| | Comments (36) |

Should anyone worry about the Northview offense when the Vikings' pitching staff is throwing blanks on the road against Baldwin Park, San Dimas and Covina? Elias, Andrade and Pedroza. Is there a better triple threat in the valley? I'm still not ready to bump Bishop Amat below No. 2, even after they just loss in the National Classic. You have to reward teams for going out and playing the best of the best, both locally and nationally, so forget all that Div. V stuff, the Lancers are taking on all challengers. The Huskies move to No. 3 with the area's only undefeated record. Let's see what they do with visiting Temple City on Tuesday. Damien and Covina round out the top five respectively, and watch for Glendora and Nogales, they're starting to hit their strides.

Did you know: Northview catcher Robert Williams has a crazy 4.3 GPA. He's waiting to hear if he gets accepted to Princeton or Yale.

Isn't this interesting: If the 2008-10 baseball playoff grouping proposal goes through as expected, the Del Rey, Rio Hondo and Valle Vista will all be in Division IV. Imagine that, Northview vs. Bishop Amat in a playoff game. Or Covina vs. Monrovia or Temple City. Div. IV would include the Del Rey, Desert Sky, Desert Valley, Freeway, Mt. Baldy, Orange, Orange Coast, Rio Hondo, Sunkist, Tri-Valley and Valle Vista. The Miramonte would be bumped to Div. III, where it would go head to head with the San Antonio. Wouldn't that be great, Charter Oak-South Hills meeting in the baseball playoffs. Div. III would consist of Almont, Del Rio, Garden Grove, Golden, Golden West, Miramonte, Ocean, Pacific Coast, San Andreas, San Antonio, San Gabriel Valley and Sunbelt.

Tribune Top Ten
1. Northview (8-1)
Three straight shutouts on the road to open the Valle Vista? Mighty impressive
2. Bishop Amat (6-2)
They should be ready for the Div. V playoffs after challenging all these heavyweights.
3. South Hills (8-0)
Can't ignore perfect. Huskies continue to beat everyone in front of them.
4. Damien (5-2)
After a great start, Spartans 1-2 in league after Diamond Bar loss.
5. Covina (6-2)
At least we didn't say the Colts loss to Northview was a tough Pill to swallow.
6. San Dimas (5-4)
Wouldn't count them out just yet. The home-and-home series' will determine it all.
7. Glendora (5-3)
Tarts are 5-1 after 0-2 start. Only loss was 6-2 setback against Chino Hills
8. Nogales (7-3)
That's more like it. Nobles have won four straight.
9. Diamond Ranch (4-4)
In the unpredictable Miramonte, Panthers are 2-0.
10. South El Monte (4-2)
Improved to 3-0 in MVL with 6-4 win over Arroyo

Hey #1fan ...No worries even if Walnut comes out flat....Im sure Rowlands' Coach will FIND a way to LOSE!.......
SAD to see the "talent" on that(Rowland) team NOT being used/"COACHED" to their potential..??????????

#1 FAN said:

I am not saying Walnut should be rank. Diamond Bar killed Walnut. Their is better team out there then what is on Fred top 10. I am hoping Walnut come out hitting agains Rowland next week after not playing agame in 12 days.

A 4.3 GPA is a good start if you are looking at an Ivy League School.

You also should bring a top tier SAT score and plan for about $50 to $55K a year in tuition, books, and board.

Grad school is a little more.

GO IVY said:

Who cares about BB. If a 4.3 gets you into Princeton or Yale, great job Robert!

Sports will end someday and you'll need that degree and what better piece of paper than IVY League School

AS SAID BEFORE ....The "mighty" SH seems to be just average!!..Maybe coach roddy should dust off the cleats and play 3rd base...'doubt anyone will notice !!

#1 fan,

Would have , could have, should have, but didn't. You play 7 innings and at the end you check the official scorebook and see that you came up short, so a top team nomination is not there for Walnut. You beat a banged up Nogales and you beat a non league game Bonita, There is just something about Walnut when they play So. Hills, they really have this mental block, but they will get over the hump this year if Coach Hoff finds the right combination of players and puts them in the right positions based on their strenghts. Hitting is a major part of the game and Walnut is not getting lots of hits but they are getting timely hits to win games and that counts but they need more hits. Long season to go. They have more pitching then what they are showing and they should use it. The deep bench is not the problem it is the combination out in the field with players out of position and subsitutions out of of position. If you dont hit you should be sitting (see Coco Crisp in last years World Series) Name of the game is hitting and if you slump you sit especially if someone else is hitting.

reality czech--figures you missed the point completely. keep spreading your misery clearly it is working wonders for you. Stay "unknown" because like nvfan, your peeps wouldn't want to claim you either.

Did you Know- Catcher Robert Williams is a great KID too!

Amat90 said:

Hoppy,

Not so quick my friend, I have seen too much of this kid in the past to jump on any bandwagon, though I must admit that he has pitched very well this season although against very weak teams also he has what may be the best defensive infield in the valley behind him.....only time will tell, so I will hold off on bandwagon hopping, but thanks for the invite (SARCASM).

Go Vikings! said:

Just want to congratulate Robert Williams on a successful High School career academically and in sports, also congratulations to his Mom.
What an inspirations to other kids and way to represent Northview.

At least know who you’re trying to talk sh*% about. The animal hasn't lost this season.

Amat90, come aboard the animal band wagon. There's plenty of room, but hurry the wagon is filling quickly. Like I said last time Hoppy leave that cage open and let the animal do his thing. The animal for not having no control only walked 2, struck out 8, and throw a complete game shut out!

“Beware of the animal” there’s room on the wagon for you too, but please leave the stat recap to me.

Mistone went 2 for 2 with a triple, Reyes 2 for 3 and also had a triple, and the best player in the valley Fox went 3 for 3.

Super sophomore McNitt should be shutting down Jupiter Florida today.

Nvfan said:

Got a question is "The Animal" from Bishop the same guy who lost against NV and got outpitched? the guy that throws 90mph from his knees?
No thanks but i rather save my money, besides gas is very expensive.
Good night animal.

NVfan said:

She "reality czech" has to be a girl and related to one of the Forrest Gumpies from Covina. They all sound the same annoying and whiners. Lately all i have heard in a baseball game is about all the brain surgeons that play for Covina High, so i can understand how you guys want everyone to forget about all the little farmers that run and just run.

The Don said:

Just an FYI, The Los Angeles times also ranks the Southern California top twenty-five in baseball. Only two teams from the SGV are ranked, Northview at number 10, and Bishop at number 18. Congratulations to both programs for representing the valley. Now let’s see both teams stay on top in their respected divisions and take CIF. Good to see teams get recognition outside the local coverage area.

Beware of the Animal said:

The ANIMAL was let out of his cage today and he was a beast. He threw a 4 hitter and struck out 8 batters. He has not allowed a run in 14 innings. You don't need to go to the zoo. Just come to Amat and catch ANIMAL FEVER.

reality czech said:

yes that was like fingernails on a chalkboard just writing that. - and that's EXACTLY how all of the NV fans sounded this weekend complaining about why THEIR name wasn't in a headline. Now they get the headline for being----THIRD?!?!

I'm glad it was as annoying to read as it was to write - and it sounds like it proved the point

alls well at nv said:

happy gilmore-youR post was annoying not only the first time, but the second, third, fourth and fifth time THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Most of NV people are actually pretty happy with Fred's coverage, but I think most of us felt the last two stories focused too much on luck - or the other teams loss - but when you are "the" team being covered I guess you can't win all the battles. Fred, for the most part, has said very good things about NV. Now how about your team?? Get over your own jealousy over NV.

czech is annoying said:

reality czech--are you here to annoy everyone. Get a clue dude, you sound worse than a whinig two year old. yes we get you are a covina boy, time to get over your loss and move on

pitch said:

sgvbaseballfan who then has the best pitching staff, if not NV?

sgvbaseballfan said:

South hills still belongs where it is everyone has a bad game... as far as northview yes its a good pitching staff but not the best in the valley.. You will see as the season goes along

summerheat said:

#1 FAN, games are not won based on would haves and IFs
The fact of the matter is that if the whole IF made errors not just the the second baseman, then you are not worthy of being ranked.
Remember the game is not just hitting, also catching and throwing, you have to do all them to win.

Joe Amat said:

No Temple City is Division 5.

I know that because the lowly, overrated, D5 team from the La Puente barrio that would come in 5th place in the VVL beat them in last years semifinals during our "didn't beat anyone" playoff run enroute to that meaningless lower division CIF championship.

please....sense the sarcasm

#1 FAN said:

Fred sorry but I don't get it. SH would have lost that game to Walnut. Just one bad thow by the 2nd baseman, and the inning was over. Walnut also beat last week #8 Bonita, and also beat this week #8 Nogales.

summerheat said:

SH, did lose to a good team, in Div 4 not 5. They do have some good pitching including one of the top lefties in the area.
SH did not have Delafuente due to injury, makes a big difference in the lineup and ability to close game.
The runs came on a error from third base, inexperience player.

reality czech said:

dang, South Hills lost to one of those lousy Division 5 teams?

HighSchoolBaseballFan said:

Temple City 2
South Hills 0

What's up with that Softball Headline. "Northview moves up to #3"?????

What about the team that's #1 - they get no respect?
Or even the team that's #2 - still ahead of Northview?
Don't you realize that when a team earns a number 1 or 2 ranking, they deserve some kind of respect by at least including their name in the headline?
I hope you can see my point - I'm not whining.... really, I just want respect because we never get any respect when we deserve respect.
I mean why is Northview in the headline when all they did was "climb to #3"?
It must be because Ramirez is a NV grad-yeah that's it!
You'd think that NV was #1 with that headline. The other teams must be lucky to be #1 or #2.
Now wait...am I supposed to now put someone down like NVFan,
SCREAM SOMETHING IN ALL CAPS,
or add in an
e-i-e-i-oh! somewhere

how's it feel now that the shoes on the other foot? sound stupid? it did over the weekend too!

Well put Don, Enjoy the season teams and take it one game at a time.
Just for the record -- it is pretty impressive that Robert Williams is as gifted a student as an athlete - great kid and NV is proud as are his parents I am sure!

Some thoughts for this week:
1.Better upgrade the snack bars for the crowds during the Easter BB Tourneys, I have a feeling the upcoming Northview/Covina Tourney will be well attended.

2.Bragging rights for any win should last only until the next game is played, (unless you want to sound like Al Bundy talking about his days at Polk High).

3.Before you hang a post-season award on a player like a target you ought to at least let him enjoy his season.

4.Gonna be a long season gang. Hold off sizing that ring order for a few more weeks anyway.

5.Best wishes to all of the Winter athletes honored with the All-Area awards, (remember to pay attention to only the nice stuff that's said here, the rest seems methane based).
