Where are they now?

| | Comments (18) |

I just wanted to let everyone know about a new blog that will be dedicated to updating the careers of our past prep stars. It's called:

Prep Stars: Where are you now?

I will attempt to provide several updates each week with what some of our past stars are doing now, either in college or in the professional ranks.

If there's someone you think should be mentioned, just post a comment, or e-mail me at steve.ramirez@sgvn.com

We already have two updates: one on former Diamond Bar baseball star Gary Brown, who is now at Cal State Fullerton, and former Walnut boys basketball player Dreshawn Vance, who is at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Hope you enjoy it!

From the very best, which includes former Edgewood great Michael Powell, who broke Bob Beamon's' untouchable world record in the long jump, leaping 29-4 1/2 in 1991.

To some of the worst, which includes, well, former Baldwin Park high standout Lawrence Phillips. Do we need to explain? This image says it all.

Former Covina High baseball player Brett Pill. Went on to play at Cal State Fullerton (who won the 2004 College World Series), and is currently with the San Francisco Giants organization. Go Brett!! Not to mention his dad, Mike Pill, who was a star at Edgewood High School 1976-1977. Played a couple of years for the Pirates.

Former Damien standout RB Ian Johnson. Led the NCAA Div 1-A in scoring, semi finalist for the Doak Walker Award, S.I First Team All American, CBSSports.com First Team All American, and finished 8th in the Heisman Trophy voting, all as a sophomore.

Was part of the famous "Staue Left" two point conversion play, which gave Boise State a shocking Fiesta Bowl victory against 7 time national champ, Oklahoma.

Factman,
That wasn't me. Fred added that later.
I will let him know.
If I was going to put a photo up, it wouldn't be of Mike Powell or Lawrence Phillips. It would be of Glenn Davis, arguably the Valley's most-famous athlete, and I believe its only Heisman Trophy winner

Steve, as a sports guy you need to have your facts straight. Carl Lewis never held the record in the Long Jump. Mike Powell from Edgewood leaped 29-4 1/2 at the 1991 world championships in Tokyo. The previous world record was held by Bob Beamon who jumped 29-2 in Mexico City.
