L.A. Times baseball poll

Northview is No. 10, ahead of schools like Mater Dei, Chino HIlls, Chatsworth, and Bishop Amat. The team I'm wondering about is undefeated Patriot, who is also in Div. IV. With Northview's 16-0 win over Ganesha on Wednesday, the Vikes are yet to give up a run in the Valle Vista. The Vikes' scoreless streak in the VVL is at 31 and counting.

Seeing as this has broken down into two camps. I want to give Northview the exact same forum.

What Northview accomplishes in the shadows of better funded schools is remarkable. So for once I'd like to see a list that merits some reflection by every blogger who might not appreciate what NVl has accomplshed over the past few years.

Let's start with the wrestling team that strikes fear in everyone and work our way to the baseball program of today.

Northview the floor is yours.

Joe Amat,
25 draftees yes!!! Do you doubt that? Names can be provided for you. They have a sign with all the names on it. If you can't read, I'll help you with it. La Salle, St. Monica, Bishop Montgomery, St. Paul (see some of their losses) not one of those teams strikes fear at all. 3 games with Covina and 3 with San Dimas (both can beat all the teams in your league) is 6 games in league, not nonleague, that presents a challenge to any program in the area.
Let me say something from the rest of the valley if I may and I may upset a few, but the majority will agree. Bishop Amat has a wonderful tradition in athletics and is respected, but if you're not from Amat, you feel like the newspaper is your personal sponsor and for the most part, the hate or dislike towards you guys is that you don't think anyone else around here measures up or is worthy of Amat and it's been going on too many years and it's the opinion of too many people to think that's not a true opinion of the SGV.
Also, remember that you guys get to RECRUIT, don't tell me that's true nor is it an advantage. It's an advantage that I understand and would enjoy as a perk if I was in the Amat family, but denial on this nor acceptance that this makes a difference is ridiculous.

E v e r y o n e should M A N UP OR S H U T U P ! ! ! ! !
Bishop Amat, Northview, Charter Oak – all schools: Stop and look at what you are writing. Can you look in the mirror and be proud of yourselves? Most of you are insulting and ridiculing not just each other but teenagers as well. TEENAGERS. Every school is like a family. It should be treated as such – RESPECTFULLY. All of you know that your children read these blogs. Are you being examples of how they should act they are your age? NO. Maybe it is the teenagers themselves that are blogging. Is what they are saying to each other and about each other ok? NO. But they are TEENAGERS and they are acting their age. They have not experienced what time and maturity has supposedly taught us ADULTS. If I am lured back to this National Inquirer type of reading again do I expect to read a backlash to what I have written – of course. I only hope that it is from the TEENAGERS that read and write here. They have yet to learn better. Those of you who are ADULTS and writing these things, act as your titles suggest: adults, parents, fathers, mothers, grandparents, teachers, coaches and most importantly EXAMPLES TO OUR FUTURE GENERATION, TO OUR FUTURE LEADERS AND TO YOUR FAMILY. If everything we say and do is for our children, if everything we do is out of love and concern for our children and grandchildren, then why can’t we love and care for them enough to bite OUR tongues, keep OUR opinions to ourselves and stop dragging THEM through this crap that WE continue to write?

AAW,
Where did anybody, "badmouth Northview" or say anything less than "NV took care of business when they met face to face".? So quite the contrary.

I gave credit to NV and Covina multiple times and referenced SCOREBOARD a few times. NV earned it. But NV fans can't have it both ways either. Not trying to recapture baseball past-the present is not so bad. CIF title a year ago and 3 this decade, with two National Championships. The year we got bumped from the Serra League (due to geography) We WON the '06 League Championship. Against Mater Dei, Servite, Santa Marg, etc. That's a pretty decent present.

If you really read, I'm going to bat for our opponents far more than ourselves. What division a school is in is really a function of some CIF decisions that in many cases are pretty arbitrary and based on geography, football, and enrollment FAR more than baseball performance.

I'm simply saying that some teams in D5 are pretty good (especially based on their performance against other valley teams that are deemed "worthy" because they have some higher number attached to their division. So we play the ones we need to because CIF says so, and then outside league *schedule the best teams possible*, I don't think anyone can compare to that schedule. And as far as leagues go, Northview has to play Covina and vice-versa. Tough matchups and taht was certainly proven by the first game. But really, after that, there isn't a difference this year between the VVL and the Del Rey. Seriously. Ganesha? Pomona? Even Baldwin Park who's 1-8? Please!

That's a league tough enough to bother putting down some other league for being D5? So as I said - stick to the scoreboard argument. That's one that no one can debate and one that NV earned.

It never ceases to amaze me how much Amat is dying to recover their former reputation by badmouthing NV. The last time I checked, you should only talk crap, if you can back it up...according to the headlines, NV took care of business when they met face to face. It is apparent that Bishop Amat is a sad, sad, cheap imitation of it's former days. It becomes even more apparent every time some pathetic fan from amat, tries to justify their situation or compare them to what they use to be (insert Al Bundy here). You sound like the loser kids in high school who banged fat chicks merely because, "they put out." Remember, they were still fat chicks and you are still amat in 2008!!! They're synonymous.
Get over it!!!!!!!!!

Joe Amat said:

Joe Northview,

Agreed. That's why I said, "and NV took care of the individual matchup at GHS and has individual "bragging rights" and to " stick to the head-to-head victory" Scoreboard. No anger nor bias to Amat opponents. I meant every word of giving NV props and commending Murphy/the players for their "stance on stats". You eared it and have been doing what needs to be done to come out on the good side of the scoreboard since.

But please, don't start with the "what ifs..." or "just as easily's..." because that opens up a whole big can of worms in many of Northviews games thus far. So let me help you... stick with Scoreboard - it serves you just fine.

And that team from Tennessee was 40-8, including a state record 9th Tennessee State Championship. and returned nearly everybody. The team from Oregon has an All American at SS. St Johns had 9 scholarship players this year. That's more on one team than in the whole SGV! THey play some baseball in Florida, yes? That Jupiter team was good and teh pitche Amat face is going to Vanderbilt. Yes that Vandy - the SEC Champions and frequent visitor to the College World Series. So yes, when they watch those guys in future College World Series/MLB games - I think they'll look back a little more fondly than some player from San Dimas, who might play at .... you fill in that blank!

And you're going to compare a few games against "San Dimas" and call them "wars"????

I'm pretty confident that at the end of 25-30 games the strengths of schedule won't be close, so you can stop trying to put down opponents because they are assigned some arbitrary division number (5). That number didn't seem to stop Temple City from shutting out South Hills for the second year in a row. I'd bet a paycheck that St Paul (who knocked off Westlake last week) would handle San Dimas pretty handily. They shut out Glendora last year. But it's a weak league?

And I'd be willing to take our last two team in league in a series against Ganesha and Pomona... and La Salle over Baldwin Park and their ONE win this season. So big ups to Northview and Pill is the real deal...but I'd lay off the "tough" VVL hype...it certainly isn't panning out like you thought. Add a single against Loyola and doubleheaders against Damien and St Francis and that makes Amats' schedule that much tougher.

As for other posters I'd love to see your list of "25 players who have been drafted" because I'm looking forward to matching you player for player... and then some. Any in the bigs now? We could name a few if you'd like -start with the All-Star game and work your way backwards.

Joe Northview said:

Joe Amat,
Lately, you've been making some descent posts where you give credit to Northview and I've grown to think you might not be as bad as I once thought, but your post made earlier in regards to NV brought back memories of your past posts where there was so much bias and anger towards Amat opponents. For one, NV beat McKiernan in the bottom of the 7th last year, not some other guy you mentioned. He was hit well that day and I have the utmost respect for him. That was his first loss in two years, yes, against Northview. Also, great win for you guys over Chatsworth, but that wasn't the same Chatsworth we've seen in the past now was it...Still a good win, I'm observant and fair. As for those *4 opponents on your schedule vs. Northviews opponents and memories you said. I think 6 wars against Covina and San Dimas year after year is more fun than playing some team from Tennessee that makes 5 errors in a game. I'm going revisit the game one more time between our two schools. Honestly, Northview squandered more than a couple opportunities and really could've won that game 7 or 8-0. It was one game, but that's all we get this year and it had both teams aces on the hill. Can't really make any other excuses. Looks like we got you this year. Sorry bud.

NV VIKES said:

If Amat went 2-2 in the supposed "National Classic", imagine what Northview could've done in the tournament. Northview pitching is much more dominant and deeper with 5-6 guys that can throw and that's what you need in a tournament. By the way, because it's called a "National" classic, doesn't mean it's automatically the best. As I mentioned earlier, playing So Cal teams all your life is much better for you than playing a team from Utah or Washington DC. As for memories, I'm sure Amat players will look back and feel "awesome" about their win over the team from Oregon and will get even more pumped about their league rival La Salle or better yet, the always tough Bishop Montgomery. Amat, congrats on going 2-2, you seem pleased with that, but knocking another program who beat you and have a pretty good track record for winning and producing players was not bright. As a lot of Amat fans say in the parking lot before games..."This Buds for You"

Amat Division??? said:

Joe Amat

Hate to burst your bubble, but the D5 division that Amat plays in doesn't come close to the VVL league.

Amat may play some strong teams in pre-season, but your league is really weak and the CIF groupings aren't much better.

Northview's history in the San Gabriel Valley is pretty secure. Did you know they have the most major leaguers in the San Gabriel Valley ever? Did you know they've had more than 25 players drafted to the pros? Yes, pull your head out your ass and know your history before you speak. Also, one more thing, Northview 4 Bishop Amat 1. As for memories, I know for a fact that a ton of former players come back during the fall and workout and work with the kids all the time. Do this for me...hit up a former Northview player and ask him about his experiences and compare that to what the players at Amat now think of the coach and program. If you can get a coherent answer from the tailgating beer guzzling crowd, they will tell you as well. Don't start some made up bs about the #1 team in the SGV.

Let the record show that I didn't bring up this topic... again!

About those "easy" playoff schools that Amat plays. Amat beat a team (Monrovia) in the finals that also played Northview tough. Their pitcher who Amat beat is in the Angels organization, and if I remember had to be removed in your game because he was out of innings and you won in the bottom of the 7th. In the semi-finals Amat beat a team (Temple City) that just shut out South Hills) Remember South Hills? They're the Covina school that was too good for the VVL so CIF moved them UP. You don't have to face them anymore.

So you're right, let's take care of now... and NV took care of the individual matchup at GHS and has individual "bragging rights". But tell me this. Who's going to look back on their experience with fonder memories, someone who plays
*insert ANY 4 schools on NV's schedule here*
or a team that goes 2 and 2 against the following four teams... after defeating national power Chatsworth

St. John's College Prep HS, Washington, DC
Heading the list in this year's field is CB's 2nd ranked Cadets. Led by 2007 AFLAC All-American pitcher Scott Silverstein (Virginia) and 2007 Rawlings All-American LJ Hoes (North Carolina), the Cadets return 6 starters and 6 pitchers in 2008, including 9 seniors who have signed scholarships to play college baseball. They finished 2007 with a record of 23-6 and will be making their second appearance in the National Classic. The Cadents were ranked by Rivals.com as the preseason No. 15.
Christian Brothers HS, Tennessee
The Purple Wave finished 2007 with a record of 40-8, including a state record 9th Tennessee State Championship. They started the 2008 season as the No. 26 team in the Rivals.com FAB 50 National Baseball Rankings. All position players except catcher return along with their top three pitchers. They will be led by pitcher Stephen Thompson (9-1) and outfielder Drew Martinez (.427, 28 RBI's and 33 SB's). Christian Brothers begins 2008 as CB's #20 ranked team and will be making their 4th trip to the National Classic.
West Linn HS, Oregon
Seven starters including three All-State players return from the 2007 Oregon State 6A semi-finalist that finished with a record of 20-9. Heading the returnees will be P/If Kyle Kraus, junior shortstop Ryan Barnes (pre-season All-American) and outfielder Justin Monahan. This will be the first trip to the National Classic for the Lions.
Jupiter HS, Florida
The Warriors return starters at every position including five returning pitchers off a team that finished 2007 with a record of 21-6. AFLAC All-American P/1B Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) and outfielder Tyler Thompson (Florida) lead a team favored to win their district and contend for a state title. This is Jupiters first trip to California and were ranked No. 44 in the Rivals.com preseason FAB 50 National Baseball Rankings.

It would serve you MUCH better to stick to the head-to-head victory and not try to compare divisions or schedules. It doesn't really help your argument nearly as much as you hope.
