Monday Morning Football
Bishop Amat News: Steve Hagerty is close to finalizing his coaching staff, and there are some big name surprises that he has talked too. Hopefully it all gets sorted out this week, but if what I'm hearing is true, there will be a lot of happy campers in Amat Land.

Above: The East team will be coached by La Puente's Ray Hernandez, who led the Warriors to the Montview League title.
This story didn't get much discussion last week so I'm putting it up again. I spoke with legendary coach Jim Brownfield, who confirmed the dates and location of the Hall of Fame All-Star football game for seniors. It will take place on Friday, June 27 at Bassett High School. The two coaches already have been selected and they're wonderful choices. South El Monte High School's Erick Escamilla will handle the West squad, which is made up primarily of Star-News schools and those from the Mission Valley League. The East team will be coached by La Puente's Ray Hernandez, another deserving coach after what he's done to turn around the Warriors football program. Bassett coach Leon Ward is once again the director, so coaches should get in contact with him about nominating seniors for the game. You can start by telling us who should be in the game.

when are the all-stars selected?

Thats a lot of news Chris, I hope its all true
except for the Shirly part. I don't think he would be able to play sports for one year if he transfers because he is past his end of freshman year deadline. I can't see him giving up his junior year of football or baseball since this is a critical time for scouts and scholarships, I hope that rule is still in effect.
I've heard it could be really difficult for Demond to get back to WC
but that would be great if it happens. As for the Nogales transfer, it is a hardship transfer and the kid is a stud and on top of that he is an "A" student with a good attitude, He was opening holes for his tailback against us all night, he also made some nice runs against us. Wish your son luck for me & tell him & his Bulldog brothers to keep up the hard work that they've been doing.

Well my son is on the team and from the information he told me, he is coming back from Georgia because he is now legal and 18 years old to move out since he moved over there with his family...The reason hes coming back is because he has a kid with his girlfriend, and of course his friends that live here. For that reason, i believe his best friend will be coming back named Christian who i heard was pretty good wide reciever. Also, my son told me that 2 players from Orange Lutheran is moving to West Covina that play DL....and we also got a player who transferred to West Covina from Nogales just this semester thats a great player. However, next year we may need to get a new quarterback because my son said that Jacob Shirley is transferring to South Hills next year. Well dont take these as facts, as these may only be rumors...however some may be true...

Chris,
Are you talking about Demond W.? I hope this is true but is it just a rumor cause I heard it would be extremly dificult for him to come back. If he is coming back it would be a huge addition for WC.
Where did you hear this?

Well only one team did play Mater Dei last year, ouch. But things are different for both schools. One, WC has a lot to prove--they are a force to be reckoned with and the other Bishop Amat,--well they just reloaded and upgraded their staff so maybe the playing field will be about EVEN this time around. We'll see.
Like most things in life it will be settled come game time. This should be very, very, very interesting. Young Buck vs Old Bull.

well let me just say next years West Covina's team is going to be really different, because some players are leaving, however! we will be getting much better players returning...two words DeMond and Christian and many other players...

SGV Athlete,
Thanks for the humble comparison between WC & Amat, but what have the Lancers really done lately?? I had a couple of cousins there tearing it up and nothing...Honestly, I don't think anyone is ready for what will be happening at Dub C next year...Maggiore is a great coach and will lead these boys to many victories. Lookin forward to the game between us...

WestCovePlayer, really? I'm not a trash talker, but come on. AMAT and WestCo are on different levels. WestCo is good, don't get me wrong, but they aren't on the level AMAT is. When was the last time AMAT lost to a team in the SGV? Better coaching and higher game speed is what propels AMAT to a victory in September.

Amat we will crush you come in September. The boys been hittin the weights real hard. We got you marked on our Calendar. The SGV belongs to the dogs.

In another interesting development, and in order to try to keep up with all of the football coaching additions, baseball coach Andy Nieto has brought in Sidd Finch to work with the lower level pitchers to get them up to "speed".
For those of you who don't remember Finch was a phenom pitcher in the '80, during Amat's heyday and said he was always a fan. Coach Finch was the focus of a Sports Illustrated article that you can find here:

Just another reason to send your athletes, whether they are football players or baseball players, to Bishop Amat

Good things are happening at AMAT, I hear the coaching staff is rounding out with some pretty impressive names. Hagarty is a quality coach and I see parents are taking notice, I hear from inside sources that the intrest in AMAT has almost doubled from the previous year.
I think Msgr. Carroll saw the writing on the wall. In the last 1-1/2 years he has made three quality coaching changes. First Baseball with Nieto, second with girls soccer, now with football. I guess he has been reading the blogs and listening to the Alumni.
West Covina and Diamond Bar have stepped up this year, I wish South Hills would have also. It is going to be a good year for San Gabriel Valley Football those two schools will see how a quality game draws huge crowds.

So Bishop Amat hires a WHOLE new staff & continues to add to it ! From the sound of it they look to have made some SOLID choices . Let them enjoy this time , and let's wish them lots of luck . I know the staff has ALOT TO DO.Let's talk about the HOF All Star game . Starters on East & West Squads . Stop the Amat Bashing ! They are aware that games are won September - November & HOPEFULLY make it to play in December . Best of luck Lancers . I'll be pulling for you guys ...Amat WILL RISE AGAIN ...Make the SGV PROUD !

5150,
Let's not talk about ifs. The games are on the schedule and they will speak for themselves. By that statement even you are not sure we are that much of a push over. You talk a big game but have no faith in what you say about how bad we are.By the way when did St Francis and Damien move out of the SGV.

WOW!
supporters NOT supportors
blog NOT blogg
lesser NOT lessor
huge NOT hugh
changed NOT change
I guess that they're correct!
Posted by: reality czech | March 31, 2008 1:36 PM
JFR, not when Amat puts everybody down in the SGV. the Amat supportors on this blogg keep putting the SGV down like they are lessor. Amat plays 2 SGV teams this year Diamond Ranch and West Covina both are bringing a very good team back both games are hugh for Amat because if they LOSE i think this will show how times have change
Posted by: 5150 | March 31, 2008 1:12 PM
Unlike 99% of the valley, I think it's a positive when BA is a powerhouse. It brings extra attention to the SGV as a whole.
Posted by: JFR | March 31, 2008 12:33 PM
Amat, you still arent going to do better than 500 in the season, you still wont make the playoffs. If all Amat bloggers did this talk to the schools that they play they will be the team that they make FUN of.... I guess what im saying is its not the coaches its the kids that play the game... But you got to find an excuse as to why your not winning and your not going to blame your kids so blame it on the coaches,,,

Joe,
I'll post happy comments at the proper time, until then, mums the word.

BB&G,
Our *hints* from a few weeks ago are coming to fruition and I promised those "big name surprises" back then. Announcements need to be made at our place, but first at OTHER schools. Let's not anybody let the cat out of the bag before it is appropriate to do so.
Experience Rules!
