Mr. 500

A salute to Gladstone coach Rich Remkus, who won his 500th game on Wednesday in his 24th season with the Gladiators. The architect of the best looking baseball field in the San Gabriel Valley earned it with a 7-4 victory over Pomona.

"It'll take a while to sink in," Remkus said. "I've always felt for a high school team to win 20 games in a season is sort of a benchmark of excellence and success. If you sit back and think, you have to win 20 games a year for 25 years to get there. The years just go by and you don't realize it. I guess I'm older than I thought.
"I have two regrets today," an emotional Remkus added. "My own son, Tommy, (who is on the team) wasn't able to be here today. He's home with the flu. My other regret is my father (Tom) wasn't here. I just want to acknowledge that he taught me the game. He passed away a couple of years ago. He was always the biggest supporter of our program. He was down here mowing the grass two days before he died.
"For every year of my coaching career he was always behind me doing things, fixing things and always being there. I feel bad he didn't live to see this day. I trust he's watching. I just wanted to publicly dedicate this to him. I am what I am today because of him."

What moving words from Coach. I played for Coach Remkus in 1996. And with great pleasure I wore a Gladstone High School Varsity jersey like the many great players before me. Coach Remkus has a remarkable way of maximizing talent. He won before I got there, when I was there, and after I left. He will always win because he knows how to win and respects the game of high school baseball as well as any one in the nation. He flat out can coach and I woudnt be suprised to see him in the high school baseball coaches hall of fame. Go get em coach and i wish you the best in your quest for another 500. Way to teach kids about baseball and life after baseball!!

Excellent article about Rich Remkus at Gladstone, those who have been in the Valley like myseld for over 20 years know that there isnt a finer teacher of baseball fundamentals in this valley. If he were at a SGV Powerhouse he would have probably 5 CIF Championships. Congrats to Rich...

Sierra league predictions: this will be the toughest 2-6 predictions that I can remember.
1. Chino the cowboys are clearcut favorites winning the Chino tournament with quality wins vs REV and San Dimas.
2. Chino Hills quality pitcher in Jonathon Montoya plus a quality program and a lot of players play year round in club baseball.
3. Damien looks to rebound after a poor season last year
4. Diamond Bar went 2-2-1 in the tough Loara tournament. Pitching a question mark this year after their #1 starter. Good hitters in Bryan Stauffer and Corey Levier.
5. Ayala returns a number a starters
6. Glendora

teams 2-6 are close and anyone can finish 2nd or 6th.
