Should they or shouldn't they?

The debate is whether baseball or softball coaches should post their rosters and stats to Maxpreps, which is where most of us find our statistical information on the high school sports scene. At the Star-News I always applauded the Rio Hondo league, because with the exception of Blair, everyone reported everything on a regular basis. I knew how to compare pitchers, infielders, and it made it so easy to list the top performers in the West San Gabriel Valley, and it was valuable when picking all-area teams. I also thought it kept everyone honest, because you could see how players are doing on a game-by-game basis, instead of being surprised at the end of the year when a coach turns in final stat numbers that you think are questionable. Baseball and softball stats aren't only important to newspapers and fans following the sport, but it's great publicity for the athletes, especially when so many community college and major universities surf Maxpreps on a daily basis looking for that diamond in the rough. Today I wanted to breakdown the Valle Vista League, arguably the most competitive in the valley. I went to Maxpreps to look at the Valle Vista League standings and it was pathetic. The only team providing stat information was Pomona. Nothing from San Dimas. Nothing from Covina. Nothing from Baldwin Park. Nothing from Ganesha. Not even a roster from Northview. The reasoning I always hear is that coaches don't want to be scouted. It's such a poor excuse when they all know each other so well anyway. I'm so tired of this over-thinking and silly gamesmanship. Is it a level playing field when other schools provide information and some don't? Good for Pomona, at least they don't hide from anyone. The bottom line is that this is about the players (which is what the coaches keep telling me), and if you polled the players, I'd bet anything they would want to be on MaxPreps, especially those who work so hard and deserve their recognition. C'mon coaches, it's so much better to know how our local heroes are doing. Don't deprive us of that. Back in the day coaches faxed their weekly stats to us, but those days are so long ago. It's all about the web and instant information. Don't hide from it, embrace it.

Fred: I think it would be great if ALL coaches reported their stats for all sports. It's recognition for all SGV teams. The kids are what matter here, it's nice to hear positive things, not negative things. Kids read these comments, so parents should be more cautious and keep negative comments out of this website. What purpose does it serve to be negative? None what so ever! If anything you are hurting the kids feelings, when mean things are said. Let's just recognize/encourage our kids and support them no matter what their stats are! Keep up the good work all young ladies and men in all sports here in SGV!!

This is why the San Gabriel Valley is second rate for high school athletics and has been for a long time. Most of the I.Q.'s of the baseball coaches have got to be that of a 5th grader. The ones that are successful usually adhere to the rules yet that is a small percentage. The San Gabriel Valley High School sports are from the D-List. Clean up your act coaches you guys really are horrible.
After seeing and hearing all the comments and posts on San Dimas Stats I think all vvl players and coaches should be aware of this guy who pads his players stats, that's pitiful.
Teachdgame, you're right about me having the coolest job in the world. It doesn't pay all that great, but like Roger Murray always tell me, "It sure beats working for a living."
Listen, and this is the last I'll say on this. I have and always will consider every player from every team for all area regardless of whether stats are called in. I agree with one of the commenters, I won't punish a kid for something their coach or school chooses not to do. I'm not, or never have been a lazy reporter, I cover as many games as I can and make myself available all the time. But this is a give and a take. I'm not asking for stats to bash kids or coaches, I'm asking so that I can help publicize these kids and their programs. I'm proud of what's happening in the SGV, especially this year in baseball. And I do think by schools providing stats, it helps keep everyone honest, especially when coaches gather for all league meetings. This is no different that what is asked at the Register, Times or any other newspaper. They do not go out and get stats, stats are provided for them. I've decided to start posting leaders in the Tribune next week, even if I only have a handful of teams to select from. Our fax number is 626-856-2758, so coaches send them to me on Monday if you would like your team included. It's as simple as that. I won't go on and on with this, you know how I feel. Trust me when I say I don't hold grudges. I said my piece and if stats still aren't provided, I'll do the best I can without them.
Fred,
You are absolutely right. Coaches need to be held accountable in every sport. We wonder why the SGV at its players dont get as much recognition as other areas. This is why you rarely see a SGV team on any of FOX's High School Sports programs. Coaches not providing stats and other player info to the media or colleges on a regular basis is a major reason. Its like the old saying, garbage in, garbage out.
The Tribune and this blog are great tools if used as such. These other areas use the media to their advantage by corresponding regularly with them through various means. If coaches don't provide info teams and players wont get the exposure they should and rightfully deserve.
A coach not providing info is only because they are (1)lazy or (2)have their own agenda. Providing stats is part of the job. If a head coach is too busy, they could very easily assign one or more assistant coaches to compile the info. The coach could then review and sent it out. But in reality, any head coach that is too busy to promote their players and their program should find another job.
FredJ- ok so you don't bash me, went back and saw someone else is in Sacto, but point is still valid, info comes from being out there and banging the bushes, watching the games, getting the info, basically investigating.
Fred,
Thanks for the nice gesture! By the way, you never covered or ranked our team last season anyways, considering they were the best boys soccer team in the entire area. Just some stats:
1. Undefeated Sierra league champs 8-0-2
2. Overall record 20-2-3
3. Beat 90% of the teams you ranked in the top 10 the entire season.
4. Advanced further than any team in the valley in CIF.
As you can see, we do not need anyone bashing kids and coaches on this blog and still be successful.
I'm curious about this comment "How else are we supposed to know how players are doing without weekly reports."....
How do you as the Prep Sports Editor get information for your stories, game updates, etc. Is it merely what people call in? I thought newspapers investigated stuff, went out and covered games / events. Heck, did I see you are in Sacto for JC games. Now that is what I'd call getting the stories. I'd expect the same kind of effort be done. I know things are different, staff's are smaller, there are 30 schools to cover, hey life is tough, I understand. My job is tough too. But you have a cool job and I'd bet your living your dream in journalism and covering sports. Man I wish I liked my job that much and got to cover sports all day long.
Hopefully you don't take this as bashing on you. It really isn't meant that way. But I am commenting on comments that seem to contradict at least what I assume to be normal parts of the job.
FredJ - I'll have a huge problem if you and Roger decide to NOT include kids in all area teams if their coaches don't provide weekly stats. Here are a few reasons / comments:
1) Stats can be full of crap whether they are culminated/distributed daily, weekly or at end of season. How do you propose to audit every players stats on every team. Also, let's face it, stats in each league are not comparable - a Div 7 kid who hits .700 in a league with a bunch of kids who are, well, not that tough, is not the same as a kid who hits .350 in a tougher league.... so?
2) Why would YOU hold a kid accountable for the actions of his coach whom he can NOT control
3) Your All Valley "stuff" supports the valley's and is for the readers (by the way - that would be the folks that PAY you and Rogers salaries) even if we don't subscribe and especially those who log on this darn blog and increase your webhits which drives your advertising revenues from this websites.
4) All Valley Teams should be the best players in the valley, plain and simple and should not be based purely on stats. See Comment #1. I would hope those teams are decided upon by a group of individuals who really know the players / have watched their contributions on the field and not merely collected maxpreps stats or press clippings.
Besides if you taint it by excluding kids, then your all valley teams might as well be called the "All Fred / Roger teams for Coaches who did what we Ask".
Additionally, making All Valley is cool for these kids. I still have a copy of the years I made it back when Roger did the Pasadena Star News teams... so don't taint it with thus crud.
Dont worry Fred, these kinds of parents are more concerned about playing time verus performance time.
lovethewhiteball, you do realize there are more than 30 baseball and softball teams in our area. You want me to send out emails to all of them after the game requesting stat information. They know how to reach me, isn't easier if they just do it.
-------
Stat, I sense you would rather we just not cover your team so that your kid will not be subjected to any kind of discussion on the blogs. That's fine, just have your coach call and tell me not to cover your games. I have no problem with that.
Fred:
Your'e right on again...
Coaches need to be held accountable in more ways than one.. Stay tune!
Roger makes good points, just look at Heggins last year.
Stats
Constructive Feedback LOL
You can't be talking about San Dimas coach who is the most beloved coach in the VVL league LOL...

Hey Fred why not send an email to all the coaches after the games and have them send you the stats?
Fred,
Lame excuse my a**! I know you get off on people who talk BS about coaches and kids! If my kids need any type of constructive feedback they will get it from me or their coach. Any type of crap they read hear is just that, crap!
This isn't just a problem in the Valle Vista league. Not one team in the San Antonio league provides stats, and only Wilson and Bonita are providing stats from the Miramonte league. You have to wonder how in the world Wilson beat Charter Oak today without that scouting report while the Chargers had all the info they needed on Wilson.
The bottom line is that coaches need to be accountable. I was talking to Whittier Prep editor Roger Murray, and he's considering not allowing players to be considered for the all area teams unless they provide weekly stats. It's the only way to maintain the integrity of the process. How else are we supposed to know how players are doing without weekly reports. You can't just come to us at the end of the season and hand over season totals. Coaches can't have it both ways. They can't ask for coverage and then arbitrarily decide what information we can and can't have.
Fred:
You're right... What a lame EXCUSE...
Stat
I guess the parents and kids won't be able to run from the truth of stats at the next level...Since it public info.
Grow up and take the spoon out of your kids mouth, it's not little league!
If that's true, another horrible excuse and a lazy way out. Then why not email or fax them to me. Maybe we shouldn't even cover the games because we have to protect the kids right? So tired of these lame explanations.
Our coach will not post rosters or stats because of this blog. Certain parents and students have been known to post names of kids and make negative comments that are not related to any stat.
Don:
Would agree on tackles not yardage in the SGV.

+1 on the Maxpreps roster thing.
For reasons already stated, the Height/Weight and most of the published stats are open to broad interpretation and should usually be regarded with a grain of salt.
It's not quite as obvious as some of the fallsport stats like yardage and tackles. Not quite.
hey, vvl fan it's been known that they pad their favorites. So much more these coaches should be called out on. Heard they just recruited someone illegally from Northview.
You all make great points, and to the person who enjoyed seeing the stat leaders in the Tribune, this is why you don't see it anymore, because we don't have enough participation from our local schools to put a decent list together. It's unfair to the kids, because I know they enjoy seeing their names in the paper, especially those who are deserving enough to be among the leaders.
I would like to see weights and height's of football players at Los Altos. They never show them in their programs.
What a coincidence. It was a San Dimas player I was referring to in my previous post!
lol, so I've heard, last year his "favorite" struck out 6 games in a row, yet at the end of the season on Max Preps it showed the kid struck out once.

Fred:
You're not going to get anything legit from San Dimas because Coach Chippy pads stats for his favorite pets. Watch out this guy is dirty..
They should do it, there is no good excuse not to other than time (a weak excuse, but one I hear). But I guarantee if they asked for a volunteer, parent, or student in a computer class or whatever, someone would volunteer to help them out. The scouting thing I have heard from a couple of prominent hs coaches... come on guy's! Everyone knows who your players are anyway. At the Glendora tourney for example, every game had coaches from the other teams there "scouting", so putting info up on Maxpreps won't give away your secrets. Anyway, it doesn't matter if I know a guy is hitting .500, that doesn't tell me squat on how to pitch him, other than duh, don't throw a fastball down the middle. It is good publicity plain and simple and that is what every hs coach should wnat to do to not only drum up support for his team this year, but also keep the chain of players coming along. If it breeds competition amongst the players.... GOOD - COMPETITION IS NOT A BAD THING.....
I would like to see rosters of high school baseball teams posted on Max preps. I go to a lot of high school games and look at the rosters and stats if present. Today I went to a CBL opener between Yucaipa-Redlands and RHS has a PA which makes the game easy to watch. Yucaipa had names on their road uniforms which was nice. Yucaipa won the game 3-2 and Redlands could not tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Yucaipa started Scott Snodgress a 6'6" lefty who gave up a 2 run homer by terrier 1b Wes Cottier. Snodgress who will attend Stanford hit 89 on the gun. Yucaipa relief pitcher Aaron Miller was consistently hit 92-94 on the gun by 2 scouts sitting next to me. Sat night will be a big game matching Yucaipa's ace jr Matt Davidson vs AB Miller sr pitcher Placencia. Game will be at the 66ers minor league park.
the bottom line is most of these coaches are a bunch of lazy a**es. The scouting line is bull. Most local teams go watch other teams and scout anyway. Most of these coaches are just to lazy to log on and post the stats and don't believe otherwise.
I don't care. All I know is that Walnut Softball beat Diamond Bar
I'm going to agree with you on this one. Mainly because of the reason that you can see how a player is doing throughout the year and not be surprised at the end. Of course, I know coaches don't pad their stats or anything, but a year or 2 back (not going to give out too much info. here) the MVP for a certain league was listed as having a batting average that even his teammates laughed at. He was a good pitcher, but no way did he hit anywhere what they said he did. I used to love to see the League Leaders listed in the Tribune. I guess coaches have their reasons, just don't know what they are. And you're right, these teams "should" already know about all of the players in their league.
Fred you have brought up a good point. I review Maxpreps to check out some of the players on the area teams. I know alot of players in softball and baseball. This is the only way at time I can check out how they are doing. You are right it's pretty pathetic that the stats are not updates on Maxpreps. All the schools in the area, know who the top players are. It's unfair that the coaches don't post the information on the players. I know that college coaches review the stats. Oh there are not stats posted. This may be the only tool they have to scout out future talent. As a fan, parent and coach, I would like to see how the players are doing. The stats may not seem important to the HS coach, but during this HS season these are the only stats that matter. I know that alot of girls play travel ball and are great players. But the HS season is what really counts and I know that their HS coach should be doing everything to help out the top players in there sport. POST THE STATS PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
