Today's Miramonte League showdown
Charter Oak (11-9, 7-1) at Bonita (15-5, 6-2), 3:15 p.m.
Fred's thoughts: Charter Oak is back playing as well as anyone and Bonita just won the Northview tournament, so this should be a great home-and-home series for the league championship this week. I know all the big players in the Valle Vista League think they have the best league in Division IV, but lets remember that Charter Oak is the defending champ, and the Bearcats' Jiovanni Mier is having a monster season.

Tribune Top Ten
1. Bishop Amat (18-4)
The No.1 ranked Lancers easily swept No. 2 St. Paul to win their seventh and eighth consecutive games. Seriously, whose going to touch them in this division if St. Paul can't?
2. Northview (17-4)
Obviously Northview's pitching is impressive, but the most impressive thing for me is they're going to win their third straight Valle Vista league title after having to play two-of-three on the road against Covina, San Dimas and Baldwin Park.
3. Bonita (15-5)
This week is about the Miramonte and Bonita's two-game series with defending Div. IV champion Charter Oak, who started miserably but now has a one-game lead over the surging Bearcats.
4. Glendora (13-7)
Is the Sierra League nuts or what? The Tartans are locked in a four-way tie for first place with Damien only a game back in the fifth. If anything, its should be great watching it all unfold down the stretch.
5. San Dimas (14-7)
They had their chance to win the Valle Vista league title. They had Northview right where they wanted them, at home with a lead late in the game after winning at Northview earlier in the week. But they let the Vikings off the hook and will likely finish second.
6. South Hills (16-4)
With De La Fuente playing again, the Huskies' chances in the Div. III playoffs took a big step forward. They're going to cruise to the San Antonio League title, and hey, can knock off anyone on any given day.
7. Damien (13-8)
It's almost not fair but that's life. The Spartans are in fifth but only a game back of the leaders. The good news is they control their own destiny. The bad news is so does everyone else.
8. Charter Oak (11-9)
I've just got one thing to say, "It's the defending champs time of year."
9. Covina (12-8)
It would take a severe nosedive, but the Colts still have work to make the playoffs. They're only a game-ahead of fourth-place Baldwin Park, but their schedule is favorable, so expect them to finish third and scare the heck out of the league champ they face in the playoffs.
10. Diamond Ranch (10-10)
What can you say, third place in the Miramonte isn't so bad.

AZUSA WINS!AZUSA WINS!AZUSA.
They beat basset 34-0! As of right now they're co-league champions with duarte. La Puente beat duarte 9-8 in the ninth inning. If duarte loses again on wednesday,Azusa wins the league with the better over all record. AZUSA plays bassett at bassett on wednesday.
GOOD JOB AZUSA, see you in the CIF PLAY-OFFS!

Yes I'm an idiot..LA Times has Northview above Bishop Amat in the whole Southern California Area for the past 2 Months..
I should go work for a real paper. Might get more respect.
Really nice to see you rank that poll rather than SGV Trib Poll especially when we know one person controls this make a lot os sense.
Good Luck with your future FRED J.
That's a laugher -you working for the Times. Oh I forgot they need someone to fill their news stands.

Here are the standings of the sierra league going into the final week courtesy of baseball resourse.
1. Chino Hills 8-5
2. Damien 7-6
3. Rest of the teams Ayala,D-Bar,Chino,Glendora are 6-7.
D-Bar blew wed game vs CHHS in the 7th inning needing just one more out to win. They lost 11-1 yesterday with Jonathon Montoya pitching for CHHS.
Next week games
1. Chino Hills vs Chino one win for CHHS clinches a playoff spot
2. D-Bar vs Ayala the bulldogs are a hot team going from last place to a shot at a playoff spot.
3. Damien vs Glendora Damien on a roll vs the tartans. Looks like tie-breakers may come into play next week. I look for only Chino Hills to advance out of the first round as D2 has some quality pitchers especially from West Torrance,REV,and Vista Murrieta. Last year D-Bar a 2nd place team played REV on the road. The sierra league teams will not get a decent seed due to the poor overall records.

UUHH...ROWLAND (X9 on the field)Made EVERY play that came their way!!.....And from the look of things from the Row. dugout it seemed that Just about EVERYONE got a chance to swing the lumber and Pretty effectively at that!!
It just seems that when the ball gets put into play (often)...We(walnut)self distruct!!...Simple!!
......Stick 2 the MAIL!!!

Walnut lost to Rowland again, but the softball team won. I do wand to say the SS for Rowland look very good. He was a mad man at the plate, and made every play that came his way.

Yes I know, you may think the Montview league is weak! But if you log in to Maxpreps.com, you'll see they've played some good teams out there from different league divisions. Well I liked to mention AZUSA, played Workman High, and won 6-4, yesterday night.Being that La Puente, lost to Gladstone, I would like to say,GOOD JOB GlADSTONE! Well let me say something about some of the workman baseball players, acting like thugs in a uniform! Your team showed no type of discipline and were completely out of control, wanting to fight after the game. Your coaches, who were thrown out earlier in the game, showed they were no better then the players. Friday's game may be canceled because of your foolish antics! AZUSA Good Job! The race is coming down to the wire!

Anyone else think the picture above of the Glendora guys looks a little odd...I mean is that that a good picture that Fred keeps showing it? It's a little more of a Girls Top 10 Photograph isn't it.
I have Northview one, Amat two on my poll.

Why should NV be ranked 2nd when they finished 5th in their own tornament.
If anything Bonita should be ranked ahead of them. They are living off the past glory winning the Glendora tournament, after that most of their wins are based on luck. NV can not beat anyone decisively. Cant hit!
Bonita should be ranked first.
Fred CO is second in their league, Diamond Bar is fighting for first and you have Covina rank? What have they done? Brother take your emotions out of this.

Today I saw a good game between two good teams. Rialto which is tied for 2nd place with Yucaipa played Redlands East Valley(REV) which is listed as the top team in D2. REV started sr Tyler Chatwood (UCLA) who was throwing in the low to mid 90's. Chatwood was on the USA 14 and under team and suffered an elbow injury and had Tommy John surg as a soph. This year he has resumed pitching and helped shutout Rialto 2-0. REV is a solid team with 3 pitchers and a lot of good hitters. Last year they were a 2nd place team and played Diamond Bar in round one winning 4-1. If the brahmas make the playoffs they could meet REV again in round one. The only negative about this game was the umpire who did not like the rialto fans and called a poor game against Rialto. I am not a fan of either team and saw the umpire in the parking lot and told him what a poor strike zone he had vs the Rialto players. He tried to get his fellow ump to back him up on the strike calls above the letters however the other umpire did not say one word.

Great debate, this is what a blog otta be. I have seen all the teams and could argue any of these three in my preferred order for the top spots:
Northview simply because they have had no breathing room until this week, beat amat head up in a packed house when it ALL mattered. And have beaten a whos who of very good valley pitchers.
Amat : very good team , well coached , very good off season program, but they do not play the tough league schedule that puts lots of strain on a pitching staff.
Bonita: well coached, possible top 2 starting pitchers in area, possible top ss in area.
Then the rest of very good teams u pick em. Glendora, Charter Oak, San Dimas, Covina, South hills (they need tougher schedule), and the 3 D’s Damien, Diamond Ranch, Diamond Bar.
As for db dropping out of the top 10 maybe not to cool but I think those folks are more bothered that D Ranch took their spot. Kudos to D ranch for finally clinching playoffs in their 2nd year in that tough league.
Brahmas are overachieving with the pitching that they have (jr #1 and freshman #2) and starting 2 soph and a freshman in the line up. Might be gonzo best job yet. D ranch has to deal with a coach that pulls a pitcher after 6 innings while he is throwing a no hitter, pitch count only 81 pitches at the time, yes its true.
Love what is going on in the sierra league, today chino hills vs d bar. Go brahmas

St Paul is a heckuva lot better than they are getting credit for. They've played a much tougher schedule than most. It looks like they beat Westlake earlier in the year and,a s you say, Westlake is 13-11 with a good scedule of their own. CO is 11-9, DR is 10-10 and we've got people clamoring to get Diamond Bar into the top ten with a record hovering .500. SP has had games against El Segundo and Torrance who play in a baseball rich region, Camarillo is very good, Palisades is one of the better teams in the City section, and Los Alamitos is 20-3! Even Bishop Montgomery swept Alemany - and what did they do to South Hills?
That's a weak schedule? You gotta get out more. The opponents above are probably better than all but ONE of Northviews opponents. But don't let facts get in the way. Please stick with the one fact that you have going for you and milk that one for all that it's worth. Northview beat Amat head-to-head. They were the better team on that night.
Of course Western Christian beat Alhambra, who has twenty wins and spent most of the season as the #1 ranked team in DIII. Where is WC? Should they at least be in the SGV Top Ten?

Come on--ARE WE BASING EVERYTHING ON TOURNAMENT PLAY THEN OR NOT???? gREAT SO AMAT PLAYED IN A TOUGH TOURNAMENT DURING SPRING BREAK, GOOD FOR THEM BUT DANG THEY LOST 2 OF THE 4 THEY PLAYED. IT'S NOT LIKE THEY DOMINATED AND KICKED A**, THEY LOST 2 OF THEM. BUT HEY I GET NV DIDN'T FAIR TOO WELL IN THEIR OWN TOURNEY SO THAT IS KIND OF THE POINT. TOURNEY DOES OR DOESN'T PLAY INTO IT? I AM NOT SPLITTING HAIRS HERE BUT WE ARE MORE IMPRESSED THAT WHEN IT CAME DOWN TO IT, NV HAS WON WHEN IT WAS MOST IMPORTANT AND THEY HAVE BEATEN PILL 2X'S AT THAT,AND OTHER FINE PITCHERS IN SD. WHAT HAS AMAT FACED, PITCHING WISE, IN LEAGUE? ST.PAUL SEEMS TO BE EQUAL TO B.P., A TEAM YOUNEVER WANT TO UNDER-ESTIMATE BUT NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS THEIR RECORD.

St Paul is MUCH better than everyone is giving them credit for. It looks like St Paul also beat Westlake earlier in the year, as well as wins over Palisades (a very good City team) and two one-run games vs Torrance and El Segundo speaks volumes. Los Alamitos is 20-3! Add Camarillo and the teams above and they are tougher teams than all but ONE of Northviews opponents. Shoot, Bishop Montgomery SWEPT Alemany - and what did they just do to South Hills?

C'mon, you can make an argument for both, they've both had the two best seasons in the area.
Posted by: FredJ | April 30, 2008 7:47 AM
Fred,
I think Billy is correct NV is and should be #1 - Let's just compare the non-league opponents:
BA - CO, Glendora, Colony, NV, St. Johns DC, Linn OR, Jupiter FL, Christian Bros TN, Chatsworth, Damien, St. Francis, & Loyola
NV - D. Ranch, Bonita, Alta Loma, BA, Mayfair, Duarte, University, CO, & Monrovia
See, it is a wash!
Posted by: Amat90 | April 30, 2008 7:17 AM
Fred, bottom line is that both Bishop and Northview deserve praise. On a given night one will knock off the other. The bragging rights should go to the San Gabriel Valley for turning out so many quality baseballers. Cudos to the youth sports programs in the Valley. . . Pony baseball (West Covina, Charter Oak, etc.) Little League. Congrats to the parents that provide their kids with the opportunities to play locally, statewide, and nationally. How many of these kids on NV and Bishop have played together on other teams. . . how many will play together in college. . . this is what we should be talking about.
Posted by: Proud SGV Parent | April 30, 2008 6:58 AM
Fred,
Northview isn't 3-4 over last 7 games. They went 2-2 in their tournament, lost 1st game (12 inn.) That's 2-3, won second game vs. San Dimas. That's 3-3, won first game vs. Covina(Pill), that's 4-3 and than beat Covina again on Friday, that's 5-3 over last 8 games. Where did you get 3-4 over last 7 games? Chatsworth is not the usaul Chatsworth and a split with Damien and 2-2 in the classic- don't be fooled by the word classic, some good teams, real good ones, but they went 2-2, not 3-1 or 4-0, so that's a wash. League schedules aren't close and St. Paul is not one to write home about and you mentiioned they easily beat St. Paul on Friday...
TWO HUGE MISTAKES- They didn't win easily (came from behind from 3 runs in the 6th) and Northview is not 3-4 over last 7 games, they're 4-3 or 5-3 if you count the last win over Covina.

thats why northview should be number one. THEY JUST BEAT PILL AND SHOWED THEY COULD SWING IT ON FRIDAY! ST.Paul +9 Covina +75 points scored now who beat a better opponent.

Rankings aren't about body of work, they're about who's the best at the moment. Think of your college football poll, a team that starts 0-2 and finishes 10-2 is always going to be ranked higher that a team that that starts 10-0 and finishes 0-2. It's when Northview lost, not how many they've lost. And if you want to compare strength of schedule, consider that Bishop Amat's out-of-area wins more than equals Nothview's big wins in the Valley.

Fred,
Look at the facts, NV is 10-1 over teams on your top 10 list. NV beat BA once,Bonita once, San Dimas twice, Charter Oak twice, Covina 3 times and Diamond Ranch once. BA beat St.Paul 3 times, where would they fit in this top 10?

I luv to hate Fred....it works for me, and he gets his "hits" on the blog......the "SGV" top ten---B.F.D., shouldn't mean jack to the players, they just need to focus on the last 5 games and get it on!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Fred, What gives? Diamond Bar out of the top ten? I'm with Patrick, you don't like Diamond Bar! why?
Posted by: Brahma | April 29, 2008 9:04 PM
its not a surprise amat is number 1 at the sgv amat tribune!
Posted by: amat tribune | April 29, 2008 8:45 PM
What's wrong with you Patrick, I'm an SGV fan, I like 'em all. Is Diamond Bar in the SGV? Just kidding Patrick, just kidding ...

Why is Northview No. 2, is that the question? Let's see, since their loss to Northview, Bishop Amat has beat Chatsworth, St. Paul three times, went 2-2 in the National Classic, has won 11 of 12 and eight straight. Northview is 3-4 in their last seven games, and lost three games in a four game stretch. Northview beat Amat head-to-head, but this about who's the best team at the moment, and momentum has a lot to do with it.

Well guys its not exactly a secret but Fred is not exactly a Diamond Bar fan , so any slip makes it that much easier for him to drop us. No harm, just matter of opinions i guess.

Northview 4 Amat 1. That's why Northview should be #1. The records, schedules (VVL is tougher League), and spring tournaments (2-2 for both) are a wash if you want it to be...so you use the tiebreaker, head to head with both aces throwing...score NV 4 Amat 1. Fred, how do you justify that. The games with San Dimas and Covina over the last two weeks and look at Northview's record against the rest of the top 10. It's not even a question...Hold on Amat, don't get panties in a bunch, there is a lot of stats behind it, the argument of "We are better just because" doesn't work for anyone. Just Facts as "JUST Facts" likes to post.

Amat easily swept St. Paul? I thought I read that Amat was down 3 runs in the 6th inning of the second game and rallied back for the win? Is that an easy win? Also, bigger wins over arch rival and Pill and Friday big win over Covina for a sweep and a Valle Vista League Championship more impressive for Northview than 2 wins vs. St. Paul. Funny, records are virtually identical, Northview has tougher league, both went 2-2 in spring tournament. Sorry, but the separation is what happened on the field and that was a Northview 4-1 victory. That's not a knock on Amat, just a fact as "JUST FACTS" says. As they said on Dragnet, Facts, Just The Facts and that is a fact...let me say it one more time...Northview 4 Amat 1. Come on Fred, I don't get it.

Diamond Bar beats Damien 2 out of 3 times and Diamond Bar drops from the top ten...hmmmm....Tied with 4th ranked Glendora for first place!...and you drop us from the top ten...hmmm....Hey Fred, what's up?
Posted by: baller | April 29, 2008 8:06 PM
Fred not sure why D-Bar dropped out of 10th place in the SGVT rankings. Last week they split with Damien and presently in a 4 way tie for first place. All the sierra league teams have overall winning records even last place Ayala. Should be a great finish in the sierra league as no one has dominent pitching. Former brahma p-of Gary Brown after a slow start has raised his average into the 270's for 1st place Cal St Fullerton. This thursday I will go see the battle of former brahma shortstops as Santa Ana with Chrispen Tarango plays Riverside who starts Richie Jimenez as ss. Santa Ana is running away with the OEC and Riverside has to many injuries and inconsistent pitching to make the playoffs as defending state champions.

Northview should be 1 and Amat 2 Fred!

Now that teams have matured from playing games, that NV win over Amat was their nite to celebrate but if both teams hooked up right now Amat destroys them.
