Softball: Northview climbs to No. 1

BONITA TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Northview takes on undefeated Burbank in the championship game of the Bonita tournament at Los Flores Park on Wednesday, 3:30 p.m.

Courtney Gano takes a jog in the park after a solo shot in Los Altos' 6-1 victory over Bishop Amat on Tuesday....I was there, I saw it, and the feeling after is that Northview still deserves its top ranking, but this is why Los Altos was number one to begin with.

TRIBUNE RANKINGS
1. Northview (13-3)
The way it rallied to beat San Dimas 3-2 in overtime tells me the Vikes aren't just good, they're starting to look destined. Can they keep this up? Burbank will be its toughest game of the season on Wednesday.
2. Bishop Amat (8-5)
Best middle-infield in the area with a pitcher who can get it done. So, why aren't the Lancers better than this. We will know more after the Los Altos game.
3. Los Altos (11-5)
A win over Bishop Amat on Wednesday would give the Conq's five straight wins and avenge a semifinal tournament loss to the Lancers in the Arroyo tournament. Don't think it will happen though.
4. Covina (10-2)
Has been consistent all year, losing only in the Duarte championship and a close game to Northview. Don't sleep on the Colts, they could end up being No. 1 by the end of the season. And I still think they will come back and win the VVL.
5. St. Lucy’s (8-3)
I've overlooked this team all season, but obviously they're legit and we will know how legit with a pair against Chino Hills this week. The Sierra league is so tough, but the Regents don't seem intimidated at all.
6. Charter Oak (13-5)
I like the overall record, but why do they keep losing the games they have to win. Another 4-3 loss to Diamond Ranch. We keep hearing about the pitching, but the Chargers have the bats to beat anyone. It's a tough way to do it, but they can do it.
7. Sierra Vista (11-3)
Because of the competition level, I don't know how good they're. It's not like the Montview sends softball teams deep into the playoffs. But there is some young talent that will be around for a long time, and so should Sierra Vista in our rankings.
8. Diamond Ranch (6-6)
I guess the word inconsistent comes to mind. They win games you don't think they can win, and lose games you don't expect them to lose. A sleeper for sure.
9. Glendora (7-6)
Bottom line on the Tartans is that they need to hit much better, and probably show a little more energy. I keep telling myself the talent is there, just waiting for it to blossom.
10. San Dimas (6-7)
Don't ask me to explain it. This team is simply too good to not have a winning record. I know there's some bad-luck stuff going on, but two quality pitchers with CIF experience and a solid base all the way around. I'll tell you what, if they finish third I wouldn't want to be the champion facing the Saints in the first-round of the playoffs.

Wow. I thought Northview was a power house. I guess not. They lost to Burbank 2-5 in the Bonita Tournament. Burbank is a good team, thats for sure.

I know Los Altos held them to only one score and lost 0-1. I guess Northview might be a little over rated.

Fred J,
The only way to explain the 5 losses LA has had, is no hitting and to many error's against some good teams!
Yes, we do remember the loss to Burbank 0-1 in extra innings and if you check with the reporter that covered the game it was another good game with not alot of hits from our girls, and Burbank was a good team, also I think that the game we played against Northview was another good game and more errors that allowed Northview to tie the game, and again we went into extra innings and our girls were able to score and win that game.
The only difference that we can say about our girls from the losses to our recent 5 game winning streak is that they are coming together as a team and are starting to really hit the ball, and those timely hits are scoring runs!!
Our game against BA was another good game for us, we were able to hit the ball hard, and they didnt this time, but you commented it was because the were on spring break, well we were on spring break the week before and were still able to beat Bonita and Diamond Ranch when we came back to play, so again I think this too says something about the LA's coming together as a team

Fred- Now that we're undefeated against the ESGV-can we get some Happy Holidays from West Covina bumperstickers?

Los Altos fan, why don't you explain the five games you lost? And yes, Burbank was the toughest game Northview played. You remember Burbank don't you, I think they blanked you 1-0 in the the San Dimas tournament. Having said that, there will be a rankings adjustment next week.

Los Altos looks like a number 1 team to me. They have 5 loses. Los Osos beat them twice (4-3 and 2-1) in double headers that went extra innings. Then a tough Burbank won 1-0. Then Bishop Amat won in extra innings 4-3. And a tough loss to a good Diamond Ranch team 2-0.

Los Altos is looking good now that they are coming together. They dont need to be ranked number 1. They beat those top 2 teams already. Just play hard and win ladies.

Los Altos has beat both Bishop Amat and Northview. I wonder who is number 1 now. The pitching from Diana is outstanding. Great hit over the fence Courtney (freshman). And Victoria hit the fence on the fly, twice.

Good job Los Altos.

Mr. Amat,
True Amat fans dont single out players like that. it takes nine hitters to win not two. Sifunetes got one of four girls that got a hit today. Not verry nice.

Fred, they did'nt hit the ball that well when we last played them in the Arroyo Tournament, our defense just was'nt there, we lost on error's in extra inning's not cause they were crushing the ball, It's been like that for almost all of LA's losses, error's have cost us the games, and now that LA is starting to hit the ball it sure makes it easier on everybody.
Good win LA

Mr. Amat said:

What happened in joe rodger stadium is lancers didnt come to play. There hitting is flat. # 7, 3, are in a bad slump. And Samantha Sifuntes needs to get out of the line up. But i am not afraid about thursday amat will pull it out over montgo. Lets just pray Lwin brings her a game. Go LANCERS! -->------

FredJ said:

I was impressed with Los Altos today, they're hitting the ball well. I can't believe Gano is only a freshman, that was a monster homer she hit to left. Defensively LA Conq, the Lancers' middle infield is solid, they just didn't hit well. The whole Amat team isn't hitting well, which isn't just because Patterson pitched well. I could hear voices in the Amat crowd talking about how they've been slumping offensively for some time.

LA softball fan said:

Fred your middle-infield was'nt that hot today, and with Los Altos looking to get alittle respect, they were able to play the game like they knew they could, LA beat Amat 6-1.
Good game ladies, Go LA

softballfollower said:

Fred,
the answer to your Amat question is coaching or lack there of. I have seen them play 7 times this year and they are so predictable. The right side of the infield is weak, timely hitting is non existant and the coaches cant call a game to save their lives. They are winning on pure talent.

Hopefully with the coaching changes in football, baseball, and soccer it marks a change in Amat athletics and the AD makes his change after this year. Listening to the parents and watching the team underacheive for a couple of years is sad. They have the horses to make a legit run but coaching is what brings you in.

Fred, the Colts are 10-2. there is a game missing on Maxpreps. Date 4-3-08, Covina vs Ganesha. Covina won that game 14-0. I don't know who updates Maxpreps, but it needs to get done. The Colts are playing solid ball and they will have a tough game against NV next week.
