Amat rumblings & news from CIF

| | Comments (47) |

I was at Amat on Tuesday for a national letter of intent signing when those in the know told me that a player from Orange Lutheran, Damien and Rancho Cucamonga is transferring in to play football. They could already be there, but nobody is ready to name names. They've already landed Monrovia's 6-foot-3 freshman quarterback Josiah Thropay, who transferred to Amat a couple months ago. By the way, give it up to the Big Six Division I signees. In baseball Tommy Reyes and Jordan Fox both signed with UC Irvine, with Andrew Mistone signing with UC Riverside and Keith Murakami signing with the University of San Francisco. Lancers softball ace Amy Lwin signed with UC Riverside and sure-handed shortstop Jessica Traxler signed with the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Congrats to all.

Read this press release from CIF on the schedule and format for the 2008 state football championships. CIF, which recently approved increasing its state football games to five divisions, has determined the format for the five games as well as the 2008 game schedule. The five games will take place over two consecutive days at The Home Depot Center in Carson. The championship event will feature an "Open Division" in which the Selection Committee, made up of the 10 Section Commissioners, will select the top state qualifying team from Northern California to compete against the top qualifying team from Southern California. The other four games will be enrollment based.

Not an Amat follower but at the same time I have nothing against them,
and when they play against teams out of the area I will root for them just like I will root for any other SGV team playing other areas [That even includes our rival S.Hills].
Anyways, West Co doesn't start spring training till
Monday so I went to Amat to see for myself what West Co will be up against.
In my opinion Amat looks pretty solid with lots of talent, similar to what South Hills had when I saw
them last summer at passing league with players like D.Wells, Parham, Kuklinski,Heard, Glaster, etc.
They look like they will be solid on "D", especially at the middle linebacker, and defensive end position, those two players definately look like D1 caliber, secondary had a couple of solid players back there also.
I can understand Freds rankings after seeing them for myself, never the less,
as talented as they looked, I can't wait till
September 19 and I still hold out hope for a West Covina suprise. On paper
it looks like a win for Amat, but you still gotta play the game on the field.

Stepping back to the subject of big linemen, how many players fit that description in the entire SGV, much less in one school? I would think not many. Let's face it, the demographics of the SGV are not the same as they were 20 to 30 years ago.

Sometimes you have to take what you can get and teach them well enough to tough it out against the bigger guys. Only the prope coaching will accomplish that. That's really all you can do.

you see..good players dont leave their school to play for bishop amat. they wouldnt make that mistake.

Hey guys this is Taylor Herrera. Just to clear up the rumors, i will not be transfering to Bishop Amat or any other school for that matter. I started as a Spartan and im going finsh a Spartan

University of Arizona has a good coach Mike Stoops whose the brother of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops but last year their record was 5-7. Arizona State was number 13 (10-3) in the country last season. They have an excellent head coach Dennis Erickson who has also coached in the pro's. Looking at last years roster Arizona had 17 WR's Arizona State had 24 WR's and Kansas State had 15. Some of those I am sure will graduate so that number will adjust. Depending on how talented he is, his best chance to play will most likely be at K-State. Arizona State is usually known for passing the football a lot so he might fit in well there.

Also at Kansas State he will freeze his butt off in the winter and that's not the case in Arizona. Plus the social activity is better in Arizona. If I am you or your friend I narrow it down to the arizona schools and if i had my pick it would be Arizona State. Of those three ASU would be 1, Arizona 2 and KSU 3 unless playing is the most important thing than KSU would be at the top. Hope that helps ya. Good luck

I have a question tp pose to all the experts out there. There is a football player that has an opportunity to go and play at 3 schools. They are Arizona State, Kansas State and University of Arizona. He is a WR. Where should he go and why? Thanks all.

Joe,

That's because 90% of this blog readership and bloggers are Amat supporters and the rest are haters or wannabes. So it really doesn't matter if you stop buying the trib or read these blogs.

Amat Guy said:

Size matters in college and the NFL. Not so much in high school football.

signed Wilhans Ili
CIF Player of the year
about 5'9" and smaller than any Amat Lineman by the looks of him yesterday.

Amat rarely has had that 6'4" 275 lineman. Our small linemen have done the job for years since the early eighties through the nineties and 2000s. You just need tough SOBs who want to get after it. Any Division. And I'm not a big believer of Program heights and weights.

New York said:

This is great. Losing Thropay hurts us, but I am glad to see Amat finally doing what it takes to build their program again. I really hope these coaches are able to develop these guys beyond the football field. I am sure they will. Good luck Joe and others.

Wow what a difference a few months make. I remember everyone blasting me when I told of how it would not be long before Amat would get back to all the dirty shananagans that made them so famous in the past, and if you think that any of those 3 kids are payig $1 cent to go to scholl there u are crazy.

By ther way there are other schools in this valley besides the 4 or 5 that you talk about every D**M Day Fred. Jeez are you on there payroll to.

Nice! Print 'em up and send 'em out!:?)

I'm sure we have to put some academic requirements in there as well, but it's a start.

better get something bigger up front said:

size of the dog. out of all that list what are two of those lineman? Nice players but mostly skill position not the big beef you need up front.

Where's the beef is dead on. Amat is going to kicked the crap kicked out of them this year because their lines are small. Better find some lineman there Hags or you are going to add on to those 27 losses you got at Riverside.

Where's the Beef? said:

Easier said then done,
Is that why Notre Dame, Crespi, Orange Lutheran, Bishop Alemeany and Hart kick the crap out of your line and aside from Alemeany mercied you last year by half time. The line was too small in some areas. Austin and Ochoa held their own but the rest got the crap kicked out of them. Well the rest are back this year and unless they took their stretch pills the same results are going to happen and those skilled players are going nowhere. Size does matter when it comes to playing football. Show me a Lineman from Amat playing in the pros that is 5'10 in fact show me a lineman period playing in the pros that is 5'10, not even in d1 college ball will you find a 5'10 line player much more a Hispanic line player that size. Hope your recruits you talk about are lineman because your line was weak last year and it will be even weaker this year unless like Fred said no names have been mentioned. Coach Hags knows by film and by last years roster that his lineman are small. Do your homework boys the line needs to have big boys up front not 5'10 and under. This pertains to the O-LINE and the D-LINE..too too small for the D1 players you will face on the line this year...go look at your programs of teams you played last year and the returning players size. Time to beef up Amat or you just may go 3-7.

Small Hispanic kids are tough and have been an integral part at Amat.

breaking news: The SGV tribune has just become the Amat Tribune. What a shock!

Lancer 2 DN said:

That is all good, and that is good question on weather the Amat Dream Team coaches can co-exist. It is al up to Hags to ensure this staff has one vision and if it becomes a reality that these coaches buy into his program and are all on the same page the Team will be a a true force. I for one see it happening. Coach Hags has been around enuf winning programs to bring a focused group of coaches together. Amat has the talent, there is no doubt about it and Fred knows this could be a breakout year for Amat so why not pump it up already. Question mark surrounds Amat lines where the games are won and lost in the trenches. Unless they have received some transfers that will anchor that line the Lancer team has some returning lineman that are good but are not massive up front. Skill players are there on both sides of the ball but the lineman concerns me because last year they had O and D lineman going both ways, altho they had adequate backups. But that was last years coaching philosophy. Bigger lineman need to show up to Amat to make a playoff run, unless this coaching staff especially the line coaches are that good at what they do that size does not matter. Playing in the D1 you will see 6' plus lineman, seniors ready for the college game, Amat cannot go up against this with the Small Hispanic kids, just a fact, they will get blown off the ball. Time will tell. All in All Amat has a good year. A championship year No. A playoff appearence yes, anything short of a playoff appearence is unacceptable this year.

I was told by another parent here that the kid looking to transfer is Taylor Herrera. I think this is just a rumor though due to the fact that this kid is going to be a senior.

sounds like Joe Amat works for the Tribune also......

Go back to exactly a year ago on this blog and all the talk was of transfers TO Los Altos...TO South Hills...TO Charter Oak...TO Chino Hills.

It's just that time of the year and THIS year it's about players coming in - NOT leaving. What a difference a year makes!

5150 said:

Thats it...... Amat and the Tribune are one. Parents dont belive all the hipe... Amat will go below .500 this season again....... GREAT coaches but they cant play for amat anymore.... Fred I now of a couple of schools that can use your services next year to try to built the football team... are you booked...

THIS IS WRONG said:

I THINK AMAT AND THE TRIBUNE AND FRED ARE ALL WORKING TOGETHER TO TRY AND BUILT THIS SORRY FOOTBALL PROGRAM BACK UP.. WHY ELSE WOULD FRED KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE SAME SCHOOL EVERY DARN WEEK WHEN ALOT IS HAPPENING AROUND THE SGV.. YOU SAY KIDS ARE TRANSFERING IN LIKE EVERYONE SHOULD GET EXCITED AND SAY HEY IM GOING TO SEND MY KID THERE ALSO AND FORGET ABOUT THE SCHOOL HE IS AT..... SOUNDS LIKE BS

come on said:

Come one Fred, who are the kids that are supposedly transfering to the Mighty Amat coaching circus? Can't you ever play it straight?

3-7 again this year said:

dont worry joe amat thats not going happen. amat 3-7 again this year

Joe Amat said:

FJR-Ouch!!!
That was low. But just think...if you get this many hits when "we aren't any good" what's going to happen to the blog if we are lucky enough to turn it around?

FredJ said:

Or I figure this is the best time to talk Amat football because once the season starts, you don't know what's going to happen. They haven't been good since this blog started.

Rodney Amat said:

As I said before, if Amat was located in OC or outside of the SGV, these blogs would not exist because Fred would not have anything exciting to write about.

jcaz said:

Of course it's allways great to have new people come into the program and contribute. However, I am wondering if these tansfers are "quality" transfers, and not just the kids who could'nt start at their respective schools.

The reason I say that is because I can already hear the haters making the same comparison that was made last year about our (Amat's) transfers to all the other outlining schools, and that was that, those kids that left the Amat program, id so because they were not likley to start at Amat.

Still, with new blood showing up at our doorstep, it only reinforces the idea that Amat is a program that still has that great reputation as a winner.

BTW, it's intersting to note that he two latest blogs that started off today were with Amat news. I guess it proves my point, and that is that Amat is still, "the straw the stirs the drink."

I knew it said:

I knew this was going to happen. Parents got smart and figured out a hot thing to pursue for their talented kids. It only makes sense. I sure as heck would want my kid to shine at a school known for getting it's players national recognition. It's not too late to enroll you kid folks!!
