Athlete of the year?

| | Comments (21) |

We've never had this award at the Tribune, but I've always wanted it and will approach management again. This award would recognize the best boys and girls athlete of the year, and you would have to participate in at least two sports to be considered. Specialization has ruined the three-sport athlete, but there are still plenty of throwbacks who play multiple sports and should be recognized for their year's worth of achievements. Your thoughts, and those we should consider?

TIM GILMORE - His accomplishments in Football & Track & Field. No one can match these numbers. Yes he is only a Junior and will be back next year at WILSON. I was told that he was awarded the league MVP in track and field. We all know his numbers in football.

James,

Someone told me about your post yesterday and after reading it, my first reaction was to use my Law enforcement connections and resources to find out exactly who you are and to confront you in person. After thinking about it I realized that everyone is entitled to their opinions and that based on the spite and bitterness of your comments, you obviously do not know anything about Christopher. About four years ago I dropped off Chris at his first high school cross country practice. He was four feet ten inches tall, weighed about 90 pounds and had asthma. Four years later I never imagined that he would grow to almost six feet and have accomplished so much as an athlete and a student. If you know anything about running and asthma they do not go well together. Everything Chris has accomplished has come at a very steep price. As a parent it has been very difficult seeing him deal with his chronic breathing problem over the years. After a race, most kids end slightly tired and out of breath. Chris on the other hand, usually ends a race gasping for air, coughing and eventually vomiting. Because of his chronic medical condition, he has been forced to work five times harder than anyone else. When most kids spend their weekends relaxing, Chris was out running every Saturday and Sunday. Chris may not be the best athlete with the most talent in the SGV, competing in the best leagues in the valley with the most awards, but he has never had anything given to him. I have taught my boys the meaning of hard work and dedication. I have told them that dedicating your self to something you like and working hard will eventually pay off and if it doesn’t, at least you know that you gave it your all. Like I mentioned before, everyone is entitled to their opinion and this blog is proof that it’s easy to sit at home, behind a computer with a fake name and criticize some kid who has worked very hard to accomplish something. Recognition is not always about who is the best and the most talented, it sometimes is about who has the least talent and does the most with it. James, maybe some day you will have a kid, when you do, pray to God that he or she is healthy and teach him or her the meaning of hard work and dedication. Good luck!

there is no doubt the athlete of the year should be kevin jones of northview. the guy played football, basketbal and is now the centerfielder on the baseball team. all three of those teams have been league champions and he has been an integral part of all three. he is not a dominant player in any of these sports but he is very talented and athletic. you have to respect what he is doing. there is an incredible amount of work that goes into transitioning from one sport to the next and he has not skipped a beat. is there anyone else out there who is playing three sports at his level? another kid that deserves recognition is andy salcido of baldwin park. he was the quarterback on the football team. he did not even start playing football until he entered high school, and he led the braves to a pretty successful season. currently hes the ace on a struggling baseball team but he has not struggled one bit. if he were at amat, northview or any other big school he would receive a lot of attention. as far as pitching in the valley goes, there is no doubt he is a top 5 pitcher but has not had the team around him to provide him the stats to compare with the other greats. his accomplishments are great, but jones feats are still ahead of anyone i have seen this year.

Hey James,
Sounds like you think you know a lot about Chris..could it be you want to be just like him? Good luck buddy..it takes balls dedication and hard work something you obviosly lack..other wise your accomplishments would also be listed.

fred,
how could u even consider chris lopez. first of all he is an ok runner but running in a very weak league, so ya every runner at los altos gets 1st team all league but when they go to cif prelims they get demolished because they r not used to good competition.and also los altos soccer went to cif this year and got there but kicked in the 1st round. they have like 20 wins over the last 5 seasons.and he did not get 2nd team all league the past 2 years before this year.he did get 1st team all league this year just because he is a senior and los altos had nobody else.he is very overrated he thinks hes the best in the world at every sport but hes not.and he also has never gotten all- valley in any sport so that shows that he is overrated.i hear he is going to long beach and that shows again he is overrated because he did not get a scholarship
overall this kid is garbage.
fred please do not have this kid as ur player of the year.u know along with everyone that that comment recommending him 4 athlete of the year was from his own father....
OVERRATED!!!!!!!!
EVERYONE ELSE TALKS CRAP ABOUT THIS KID AND NOBODY LIKES HIM

Jio Mier - Bonita

Baseball - Maybe the best BB player in the Valley, certainly one of the two or three most closely followed, (by scouts silly, not by Fred)

Soccer - 2007 Miramonte POY, (as a Soph), a legit D1 prospect, played on an undermanned HS team in 2008

Football - Returned and Led the team in scoring and INT's after being knocked out and carried of in the pre-season

Heisman winner Glenn Davis won 13 Varsity letters at Bonita. How many will Mier finish with?

It will tough to choose an Athlete of the year. However, it can be done, you just need to make sure you have all the criteria set out very clearly.
Chino Hills HS Football and Basketball player Corey Harkey (2008 grad). He is heading to UCLA to play Football but had an outstanding basketball season also. When he was a freshman, he played 3 sports: Baseball, Football and Basketball.
