The Bishop Amat baseball won the CIF-Southern Section Division V baseball title for the second consecutive season, beating St. Paul 6-2 at U.C. Riverside. Amat becomes just the fifth area team to score back-to-back CIF-SS titles, joining Bishop Amat teams in 1968-69 and 2001-02, Edgewood in 1976-77 and South Hills in 1997-98.

RIVERSIDE - There was nothing extraordinary about Bishop Amat High School's 6-2 victory over rival St. Paul in Saturday's CIF-Southern Section Toyota Division V championship game at UC Riverside.
But there was about the accomplishment.
Bishop Amat, getting three hits apiece from seniors Jordan Fox and Keith Murakami and a solid pitching effort from sophomore Paul Paez, recorded its second consecutive divisional title to join the Lancers teams of 1968-69 and 2001-02, Edgewood in '76-77 and South Hills in '97-98 as the only area teams to win back-to-back division titles.
"The team that throws the best strikes, plays the best catch and puts the ball in play the best, has the best chance to win," said Bishop Amat coach Andy Nieto, whose Lancers won their 17th consecutive game to finish 27-4. "There are those who put too much credence on divisions I, II, III or V. Of course, (the teams in those divisions) may have a bigger talent pool, but it doesn't change the formula of the game. The formula is easy.
"What these kids have done in two years is phenomenal. They haven't lost a Division V game in two years. They are 34-0 in Division V games. So for these guys to do what they've done in two years is truly amazing and I'm proud of them."
There was nothing special about the way Bishop Amat accomplished it, either. It was just typical Bishop Amat baseball, which combines good pitching and defense with offensive pressure that usually makes the opponent crack.
And St. Paul obliged.
The Lancers, who outscored their playoff opponents 46-9, showed it from the start.
Fox, who was hitting almost .600 coming into the game, hit Gabe Encinas' first pitch for a bloop double. He then scored after left fielder Justin Herrera placed a perfect sacrifice bunt up the first-base line. But Casey Flores went for the play at third, and his throw glanced off Chris Wilson for an error and a 1-0 advantage. The Lancers increased the lead to 2-0 on an RBI groundout by Tommy Reyes.
"I was just trying to get the rally started any way I could," said Fox, who went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, RBI and a run scored.
"If it's a hit, good. I just wanted to get us going."
St. Paul (22-12-1), which lost for the fourth time to its Del Rey League rival, didn't cave - at least not at first.
The Swordsmen, taking advantage of a walk and a two-base fielding error, made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning.
But the Lancers again forced the issue, this time in the third after Reyes singled with one out. Nick Bergara hit into a force but Murakami, who went 3 for 3, hit a deep fly into the gap in center field.
Ryan Ball raced over to make the play, but he bumped into left fielder Evan Sanchez and dropped the ball for an RBI double and a 3-1 lead.
The Lancers then made it 4-1 in the fourth after center fielder Mark Rodriguez singled with one out. Fox then hit a line drive to center field. Ball misjudged it and came in before the ball sailed over his head for an easy triple that scored Rodriguez. Fox tried for an inside-the-park homer, but was tagged at the plate on a relay throw by Andrew Chico.
"That's just part of our game," Nieto said. "We try to just maximize our outs and put pressure on the defense, regardless of who they are.
"We like to make them have to think on their feet, and we did that."
Reyes then capped the effort with a two-run home run to center to make it 6-1 in the seventh.
The rest was up to Paez, who despite being a sophomore has been the Lancers' ace all season. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before designated hitter Tim Gonzalez ended it with a line single to center with one out. Ball then got an infield hit.
But Chico, with Amat leading 4-1, then lifted a shallow fly into right field. Brian Seymour made a nice running catch for the second out, then threw out Gonzalez, who attempted to tag up.
Bishop Amat's sophomore left-hander, who has been dominant during the playoffs, then retired St. Paul in order in the sixth.
"I didn't care about the no-hitter," said Paez, who also had seven strikeouts. "I just wanted to help us win and get my first championship."
St. Paul made it 6-2 in the seventh following singles by Flores and Gonzalez and a balk before pinch-hitter Adrian Montiecinas grounded out to end the game.
"It's such an accomplishment to win back-to-back," Fox said. "It's like I said, it just shows we've had depth throughout the school (during these two years). We just keep having new people coming up (to the team) and we just keep winning."

Classless,

Well as you can see that the classless Amat people whomever they are (some imposters) do come in here and spread some hate and bashing like some others schools do on this blog. It is a battle royal in here for some but then again there are some wise that post some real good findings and respect each others kids as players etc. No school or its parents should be labeled by what some say to insult one another. I am sure all schools have there loud and abnoxious bloggers but Amat catches allot more heat for it, but then again the blog is 50 percent Amat retoric and 50 percent others. So it stands to reason why the bad Amat crew is bringing this hatred to the good side of Amat. Judge the bad side not the good side.

All that I am saying is look at the foolish names that are used on this blog.

There is no consistency as to the person or persons who are talking smack. They are all over the place with the garbage they use and they are afraid of telling us who they are.

The reason is quite simple of course, because if you knew who they were, or at least knew who they rooted for, then it would be a level playing field. I suppose you can’t blame them because to be honest with you, I suppose I to would be ashamed to compare records and score board if I were them. These people show no class.

As for me, and a few other Amat people, at least you know who we are and where we come from. True, you don't know my real name or who I really am, but that is not the point because we always post with the same names, all the time.

None of this BS by hiding behind a silly moniker.

Did not insult anyone just speaking the truth. We must take the good with the bad and thats why Amat has been mislabled here, as just bad and that is far from the truth. The division of parents is there at Amat and ask most Amat parents and they will tell you the same. The good side outweighs the dark side over at Amat but we get labeled as Thugs, Raiders, Barrio etc. That is far from what Amat parents are about. We are fair and very friendly to any other school but to be knocked for what a few rotten apples do is not fair to the rest of those great parents over in Lancer Country. Truth hurts but Amat is still a very friendly place and the parents are top notch, well most of them anyways. At least we are honest about our problem.

Im a little confused here about all this comparison stuff latley.

Did'nt Amat beat Northview something like 3 years in a row ? Was'nt this the first time Northview beat Amat in quite a long time ?

And is'nt Amat going to play in Northviews division next year ? Against Northview and thier highly touted competition ?

And isnt Amat going to spank Northview next year, at least twice ?

They will most likely play each other again at least once in a tournament, and then they will most likley meet up again in the playoffs right ?

So, when Amat plays Northview, and beats them next year (both times), then what will pinky finger and the other's have to say then ?

Oh, Amat sould be in another division....Oh Amat is beating all the low end caliber teams..Oh Amat has'nt played anyone except Northview...Oh Amat....blah blah blah.

Joe Amat said:

Cifbaseball-

D3 would be nice, but the CIF tries to spread out the private school leagues across divisions. If the Del Rey were there with the Mission League it would be an all private final four and CIF hates that.

Again, the competition over the course of the season was NOT inferior - quite the contrary.

Fox was 8/11 in the GHS tournament, 8/12 in the National Classic
and 13/25 vs nonleague opponents like Chatsworth, Loyola, St Francis and Damien

Reyes was 4/10 in the GHS tournament, 4/9 in the National Classic, and 14/20 vs the same non-league opponents

That's inferior?

Joe Amat said:

NV&AmatAreBothGood -we agree on your name at least.

I think BAww was responding to someone elses statement,
"....Monrovia and Mayfair who beat us in not so important games..."
So you can't use the same argument on two sides of the issue.

I happen to think that they're all important and have given NV much credit for their win. In fact just said, even though we both won championships - they won head to head so they should be #1 and we should be #2. However we also know that rankings are not what determines the outcome of a single game - or an imaginary 4 out of 7/how many out of 10, etc. It's about who's better that day - and NV was.

As for pitching and defense - debatable on both counts.. sticks - what do you think? And when you said, "...This team wins quite a bit over the years...."
were you referring to Northviews first title in 37 years or Amat's 4th this decade and 3rd repeat in about that same time?

Cifbaseball said:

Congrats for winning, even if we all agree that you should be playing

Joe Amat, is hard to say Fox and Reyes are the best whey you play inferior competition.

Pitching and defense wins championships and take your Amat hat off for a second now and tell me truthfully, who has better pitching and defense? 3 games out of 10 for Northview, drink some water for a change cooler boy. This team wins quite a bit over the years.

No one *easily* dominates any division. And we've already discussed that teams beat teams in higher divisions. Like I said St Paul beat teams in D1. Teams that beat the D1 CHAMPION! And you don't think they *could* beat D4 SD or Covina... or BALDWIN PARK?!?!? Maybe BP puts up a fight... heck they beat San Dimas. But does that say something about BP... or San Dimas.

I think as sucky as Baldwin Park's record was this year--they would put up a fight against St.Paul as well. TOP TEN
1.Northview
2. Amat
3. South Hills
4. Diamond Ranch
5. Charter Oak
6. Bonita
7. San Dimas
8. Covina
9. Azusa
10. La Puente

POY - Tough call for Fred. I don't envy you. Nor would there be any valid complaint if it was given to any number of guys. Northview seemed to be a real team effort, Elias ran the table(11-0 same record on the year as Paez), but I sensed Andrade was kind of the heart and soul (although Williams seemed to be a more vocal leader)

That being said Fox may be the best hitter and Reyes is the best player....and it might not be close. Best player=POY

SO YES it certainly means that since we lost to Northview and Damien teams that they lost to **COULD** beat us... no doubt! And that "works in baseball" without question! I have been saying that since the first pitch of the season. And all of those teams I mentioned in D5 COULD beat teams in higher divisions - as proved by the examples. The final four in all divisions could get knocked off by many of the other semifinalists in all divisions in a one game playoff.

And I'm POSITIVE that you don't want to compare "impressive wins", so let's leave it at that.

Finally...
Congrats to Northview on their first title in nearly 37 years
Congrats to South Hills on their first final in a 11 years
Congrats to Diamond Ranch on their first final ever
and...
Congrats to the Lancers on their fourth title this decade and third time achieving back-to-back titles

Stick to Football, you make a little more sense there.

Your baseball skills suck and you continue to make really ignorant comparisons

BA would win said:

Capt was the Glendora Tournament really that important to Amat? That was Northview's World Series. To Amat, it was preparation for a bigger tournament with better competition. If they played 10 times, do you think your Vikes could win 3 games? The first 2 playoff games proved Amat's heads weren't into it. Once they got focussed, it was all over.

Capt. Jack said:

Fred J. and the rest,
First of all, congratulations to the Bishop Amat players and asst. coaches and even to former coach Kenny K. who most of these came to Amat to play for. It was a dominant run, but Northview's div. 4 run was just as dominant til the last game at Dodger Stadium. Amat had a very tough game in the first round with the little school from Downey that a lot of people haven't heard of and the Battle of La Puente wasn't a completely dominant performance either. Don't forget that, nor does it make your championship less. Not here to say our title is this and yours is that, but let's not be negative towards one to pump up another either as one or two of you did. I am a Northview fan, but I can still give credit to Amat and say I was happy to see those kids last night be so excited, that's what it's all about. Joe Amat, can you stop with the "this team beat this team who beat this team"...You keep mentioning Monrovia and Mayfair etc..to boost your Northview isn't all this argument. Well, you lost to us which means Monrovia and Mayfair who beat us in not so important games could've beat you if you go by your logic or Damien who you lost to with your starters lost to some crappy teams this year, does that mean you would lose to the teams that beat Damien? It's a stupid argument and doesn't work in baseball. You look more at impressive wins and the small amount of losses a team has...This means that day in and day out, they performed at a high level. Congrats to the kids.

Just baseball,

You said to Fred:

You simply dont know baseball! Do some homwork on the bracketts then get back to us...

Here's some info that shows FJR is right - there's not the big gap that you think, and Nieto is right in the article, Regardless of Division - you still have to play every day/night or someone will knock you off.

St Paul beat Mayfair and they beat Northview the D4 champion. They also beat Westlake who was able to beat the D1 Champion Simi Valley.

Bishop Montgomery swept Alemany and they beat South Hills the D3 runner-up. They also beat D2 semifinalist Palos Verdes.

San Marino beat Temple City , who couldn't make it out of D5's second round, but TC beat South Hills.

La Salle didn't even make the playoffs in Amat's D5 league, and they beat Monrovia who was able to defeat Northview the D4 champion.

And, how tough could Savanna (D4 semi-finalist) be - they lost to a 6-20 Pacifica team and a 9-18 Western squad?

Or D3 semifinalist, Elsinore? They lost to La Serna..and D5 finalist St Paul beat them all 3 times they played this season.

So the bottom line is you gotta play. It's tough to repeat (San Antonio Spurs) and plenty of great teams at all levels that were supposed to win don't (New England Patriots)

FredJ said:

Some homework on the brackets? Okay, if were being fair, didn't Monrovia, a team from Division V that got knocked out in the second round, beat Northview in the Northview tournament. Didn't Temple City, another Div. V team from the RHL beat South Hills, a Div. III finalist. I still think Div. IV was tougher, but not the huge gap most people seem to think it is. Northview should finish the season No. 1, it deserves it based on the total year. But I'm not sure even Northview would have dominated Div. V the way Amat just did. That was an impressive whipping they put on everyone.

D5, Pink ring, womens league, call it what you want. Amat ran the Table all year in their league and the CIF playoffs and simply dominated their opponents. Others in our valley and I wont mention any name did not or could not do it the Amat way. The talent at Amat is far superior to the rest of the neighboring school, even the one to the North of them that beat them that cold Sat. Nite out in Henderson field. Congrats to Tommy Reyes this kid is the real deal and Irvine just found a star for the next 4 years. what a shot Tomcat! Amat brings back another solid team next year and make another run at it, for the rest around Amat I dont think your luck will be as good. Parents bring you kids to Amat to play Baseball this is where stars are made see Reyes , Mistone , Boomer and Fox. Nice send off to the senior players.

Don't you just get the feeling here that a few of these clowns were just hoping that Amat had lost tonight ?

And when they won, they just had to say something, anything in fact, just so that they could post something on the message board.

It's so funny how idiotic these people are. I mean, they are so focused on the anti-amt stuff, that when they can't blast the teams, they shoot off on Fred. How funny.

Hate Amat

Dude it's late and I've been enjoying the night!

Yeah, you're right, Amat really is overrated especially given the comp they played in CIF.

The game just wasn't at a level of last night at all. Northview would still give these guys serious problems.

I hate Amat said:

Hey Just Baseball,
I agree Amat is completely classless and overrated, but before you post your feelings, maybe mix in a spell check!

Enough of the pink ring comments, can you let these kids have their moment. They didn't just win that division, they dominated it and deserve their credit.

The kids were fine, but is there a bigger A-hole than Nieto? Hey Napolean, its about the kids...stay off the field and take your clip board with you. And to that loser behind home plate in the striped shirt...hey fat boy....are you really such a loser that you have to celebrate each pitch? Get a life? The best part was when St. Paul finally did one thing right, you couldn't stand that someone was actually cheering for the opposite team. Its nice to know the Raider Nation resides in La Puente.....classless thugs....oh yeah....D5 is a real challenge, isn't it?

GoSwordsmen said:

Kudo's to the Lancers. Paez pitched a great game. He mixed his pitches well and Amat can hit. Reyes' shot was an absolute bomb.

With 5 of 9 starters being sophomores, the Swordsmen will be back next year to win it all!

Go Swordsmen!

whats up with that said:

What's up with all the beer bottles in the parking lot?

homophobe with the pink fetish,
How must it feel for the other CIF finalists in the "manly" divisions to lose to teams in the "womens" division? It looks like the final 3 teams that Amat beat in the "womans division" beat teams that defeated our other two SGV CIF finalists.

I bet there are over 550 other schools in the Southern Section that would love to win a ring?

Tommy Reyes hit an absolute bomb. That ball would have gone out of every Major League stadium.

FredJ said:

Hey, give Amat credit, it's not like there's a big difference between Div. IV and V...In fact, last year's Div. V finalists were better than the Div. IV finalists, in my opinion.

That's what Fred said. We are actually joining "ourselves" in this elite company that includes the GREAT Edgewood teams with Pill. Toothman, Favata, and Angulo (former Lancer!:?) and South Hills during the end of Coach Bastions run.

Might that mid-70s Edgewood team under Karl Major be the best valley baseball squad ever?

This would actually be the 3rd time Amat has gone back-to-back.

Knock on wood!

After Beating St. Paul 3 times already you would think Bishop Amat has their number, but it is always difficult to beat a team twice much more 3 times but Four? This could be where St. Paul breaks through and Wins Finally. The way Amat is playing the last two games they are smelling the finish line, can they close the deal? This will be a better game then the first 3. Errors will decide this game. I am picking Bishop Amat. 7-4
