Baseball: South Hills, Bishop Amat advance; Bonita-Northview, Charter Oak-Patriot postponed until Saturday ...

Live Blogging
Bishop Amat 15, San Marino 1 .... Paez six innings, two hits, struck out eight
South Hills 2, La Serna 1... De La Fuente two-run homer in 6th, the journey continues
Diamond Ranch 6, St. Joseph's 1 ... Third place team from the Miramonte in semifinals

Postponements: Here's the deal, I will update throughout the day when I learn of game cancellations, location changes. South Hills had a meeting at 9:30 and as of now has decided to play their game at La Serna. Just talked to Bonita coach John Knott and Northview's Darren Murphy, who have agreed to postpone today's game and reschedule for Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Charter Oak coach Tom Quinley said they have postponed their game against Patriot, and will reschedule for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Bishop Amat is hoping to play, Nieto drove by there this morning and said the San Marino field, one of the newest and best around, looked great. Amat may actually drive there and let the umps make the decision. Diamond Ranch is on as of right now (Noon). AD Jim Weiss said they didn't get much rain, and that St. Joseph's is on their way.

What's at stake: The concerning part for all the coaches is that there is rain in the forecast for Saturday too, and you're not allowed to play on Sunday. If games somehow get pushed back to Monday with a Tuesday semifinal, the pitching is going to get all screwed up for our Valley teams.

Quarterfinal schedule updated
Division III
South Hills 2, La Serna 1 -- This must feel good at a school where everyone says they don't play anyone, especially me.
Division IV
Northview at Bonita -- postponed until Saturday, 3:15 p.m.
Patriot at Charter Oak -- postponed until Saturday, 3:30 p.m.
St. Joseph's at Diamond Ranch, 3:15 p.m. -- On as of now.
Division V
Bishop Amat 15, San Marino 1 -- Is this just too easy or what?

yes that was a fluke

but when Monrovia beat NV - that was a"fluke"? Interesting!

northview is a better team said:

no that was a better team winning

reality czech said:

Like when NV beat Amat? Was that a "fluke too"?

a fluke said:

its called a fluke.

reality czech said:

If D5 is the "womans division" what does that say when two teams that couldn't advance past the early rounds of the "womans division" beat two teams in the championship in "higher" divisions? (Monrovia beat Northview and Temple City beat South Hills)
What's lower than a "womans division"?

AMAT 73 said:

moved up,
WOW that is one huge jump . Maybe CIF will move us up to D- 4 then would that be enough for you or do you a have rule stating AMAT has to move up 4 divisions at a time when everybody else can move up one at a time. Another question ,why is d-5 a womens division in baseball but d-6 is not in football ?

already moved up said:

los altos was already moved up from division 7 to division 6 in football. time to move amat out the womens bracket

AMAT 73 said:

womens title
Very interesting reply. So what you are saying there is one set of rules for AMAT and another for all the rest. Why should it not apply to a successful program like LA in football who is in the lower division despite winning many championships and never moving up to a more competitive division, but that's ok.

womens title said:

this only applies to amat because they should be in div 1 or 2 and not playing for the womens title in div 5

AMAT 73 said:

simple,
So to follow your thought process and reasoning the same applies to your D-4 or 5 football league you play in . They are all weak teams and they should hand out pink trophies or put * next to those championships.

so simple even an amat fan can understand it said:

very simple amat 73. so simple even you can understand it. All these teams in div 5 are weak. CIF should have just put amats boys team in a womans league.

AMAT 73 said:

pink trophy,
If we are fortunate enough to win CIF and they see it fitting to hand out a pink trophy for D-5 then we will gladly take it as long as has CIF Champion LANCERS written on it. Also if you can extract from your feeble mind why there should be an * by our title please give us you explaination , in your own words and not those of all the other haters out there. Please think for yourself once in a while. To south hills #1 why mention LP and SM in your post . Do you measure your accomplishments against what AMAT does to prove your might or you just threw that in as an opportunity to bash AMAT just for the hell of it seen as we aren't the ones bagging on the kid for his actions of the home run . As a matter of fact I believe Lancer 2DN was backing you up.

WOW , go SGV, its great to see all teams doing well, even Amat in D5 (you still have to play and win the game),

Team on a roll is D Ranch, power, defense, and pitching can do it for you plus some bracket breaks, and god with the weather. All in spite of a coach that calls a squeeze with Lengyel who hit a 400 ft bomb previously to give them a 2 run lead. CRAZY.
Not to mention, starting a sophomore pitcher Derek Goodwin when you have a senior ace Nick Greene who just beat Santa Monica, ready and rested, nothing like being a weatherman. Although Goodwin pitched great, 0 earned runs and keeping the big hitters off balance, they did bring in Nick Greene and closed with R J Benjamin.

Other highlights of the game: 2nd inning double play by Diamond Ranch Licon to Gonzales. Russel Allan went 2-3, Kyle Lengyel 2-3, Derek Goodwin 2-3 1 home run his 2nd of playoffs. R J Benjamin save.

Sorry to say but next up will end the road to Dodger Stadium for the Panthers, Patriot is just to good and Charter Oak has the best home field advantage in the CIF. Anyway great run Panthers.

and La Serna also lost THREE times to St Paul (D5 Del Rey 2nd place) who lost THREE times to Amat - so by your logic - they are not that good either

It is so funny that you can say De La Fuentes home run was hit on a little league field but why only one of your players hit it out when its on your home field, shouldn't your whole team be hitting it out??? Anyways South Hills WON and will remain at NUMBER ONE!!!!

South Hills # 1 said:

Just remember South Hills plays GOOD schools, not schools like La Puente & San Marino. Yeah he might of exaggerated his showboat but his home run came clutch and is something to be proud of!!!

polish up that pink trophy amat fans. Gotta love winning 15-1 against weak teams. This division 5 title should have an asterisk attached to it.

some of you had tapes to meausure the homerun, is it really that important if Babe Ruth hit a hr on the small right field of Yankee stadium vs center field? Obviouly everyone had the same opportunity and the ball kept dying against the wind.
Yes delafuente did play for the USA team, will go to college on almost a full ride, will get drafted even with a bum knee. Will keep on playing, maybe he will learn tone down maybe he wont. Maybe what makes him great is the cockiness.
There is one guarantee there will always be a "Jeremy Popoff" who will look at all the negatives he does because he/she could never reach those dreams.

Frankly who cares, if he can do it again to win a game then SH will sure take it

Jeremy Popoff said:

Have any of you SGV people ever been to a college baseball game? I'm not talking Mt Sac here. Go check out the Fullerton/Long Beach game tonight. Then you'll see two teams playing that respect the game. They don't stand at the plate and admire homeruns and they certainly don't brush their shoulder off when hitting homeplate. Leave showbaoting to the pros like Kobe and LT. Those guys are entertainers and get paid to perform for the audience. High school baseball should be about learning to play the game the right way. Instead of taking BP all day and night, maybe De La Fuente should learn a little bit about playing the game with respect and class. He'll learn eventually. Rodriguez at Pepperdine will yank his ass next year if he sees what I saw yesterday. A punk homerun trot by a kid with a pumped up ego. They obviously didn't teach this kid much when he played for Team USA!!!

delrioHB said:

It was a great game between two completely even teams. Serna made one bad pitch. Our filed at LS is a short porch (about 300 to left and 350 or so to center), but the ball dies there due to the prevailing breeze. Dela Fuente's "bomb" was only about 330' or so. Nice hit, but it didn't go out by much. And the kid is definitely an idiot with the gangster "brush off" gesture at home plate. The kid is talented, but he is going nowhere with that attitude.

Great season by both teams-two of the best in the area.

to the haters said:

I can understand old school vs. new school mentality but the kid did not kill anyone, seems like some of these comments are more out jealosy and personal then the act itself. Sad thing is the insults come while they hide behind their mom's skirt.
Big deal, play the game with passion, hell play the game on a broker knee and hit a winning HR.

Lancer 2 DN said:

Whats the big deal. He poked one out and got caught up in the moment, remember he is a teen and not a adult. If I am his dad I tell him to tone it down but you cannot take away the fact he had a clutch HR. Big time players rise to occasion in big time games. Kobe grabs at his jersey and flashes that Lakers embroiderment across his jersey when fired up, I do not see the big deal only if you were on the losing side or a SH hater. Good job So. Hills keep it going for SGV. It is all about Amat tho!

FredJ said:

Don't let this get nasty, I had to delte six comments this morning.

Dude the NV nation said:

South Hills Fans,

There is no excuse for classless showboating. That is an embarassment for the player, the school and his parents. How pathetic was that display of a little league field homerun. Very bad taste, I hope its not indicative of South Hills program. Pretty sad.

Jeremy Popoff, not trying to get yo going on NV, the point is that i rather have a player who has heart, plays injured, and cares about winning, then a guy who just works enough. My kid is a friend of Dimitri, and this kid is hitting at night when others are watching TV.
I dont agree with showboating but people forget the other team was was heckling him when he struck out.

Jeremy Popoff said:

Don't even get me started on Northview. I saw some bad sportsmanship from South Hills today but Northview takes that crown every year. Nobody plays baseball with less class than Northview. It will be fun to see them all crying down the RF line after Saturday's loss vs Bonita.

just a fan said:

Jealousy is a bigger sin!
Jeremy Popoff, taking a shot a bum knee of a young player has to be a lot lower then any showboating. Like someone else said, your kids would most likely not have the guts to play with a torn knee. Can you acknowledge that?
Two players have been mentioned here, Giambi and Ramirez. Ramirez is perceived as cocky and aloof, even lazy. Giambi a good guy who works hard.
Reality is Ramirez is problaby one of the hardest working players and Giambi cheats with steroids.
There is a pitcher for NV who is problaby more cocky makes gesutes at players when he strikes them out, where is the outcry?

Jeremy Popoff said:

Must have been the bum knee that caused "Manny Wannabe" De La Fuente to brush the shoulder towards the La Serna fans. What a classless move!!! Bastion wouldn't have stood for it. The next SH hitter should have got one in the earhole.

TaughtByTeach said:

The LS/SH game was a true battle of two very evenly matched teams. Solid defense great pitching, coaching strategies...a true classic...then there was Dimitri Delafeunte, who overshadowed his own accomplishment with an embarrassing display of total disrespect for the game. Are you reading this "Teach"?...He completely contradicted what you and your organization stand for. Now, I know you weren't coaching him at the time, and I'm pretty sure you don't condone this type of flagrant taunting, but this kid did all the things described in the previous post. What wasn't mentioned is when he got to home plate, stood on it, and brushed his left hand off his right shoulder in an "F/U" gesture towards the stands. Disgusting!
The following is a quote from "TeachDGame" written by an SGV Arsenal coach (Dimitris' coach)
PLAYERS:every time you step on the field, it is one step closer to the day you will no longer be
able to step on that field and compete. How do you want that step to be taken. Everyone wants
the satisfaction of winning. Winning feels good. But can you win while still retaining the Respect
of your opponent.
After todays display, you little man, have lost all respect from a former admirer.

SHball said:

In DeLaFuente's defense, there is another side of the kid. He is playing with a torn ACL, will have surgery after the season is over. Doctors advice him against playing and risking further damage. He already has a scholarship, so the question i asked, why? No way i would let my kid play and risk his future. So i have to conclude that the kid is a gamer and wants to win. He is not 100% but has a huge impact on the way others get pitch. No kid in this valley gets pitch around as much as he does, and i am not saying he is the best hitter. On top of this he has been getting ready to go on the mound.
I am old school, so i am not a fan of homerun showboating but he earned his right, i can assure you that most kids in the same position would choose to sit and not play.

Jeremy Popoff , you are correct Giambi respects the game by cheating and injecting steroids.
Why is it ok to celebrate in football but in baseball is showboating?
When someone strikes out, the opposite team yells and talk trash but when you win the game hitting a homerun some people get sensitive.
Ramirez says he has no problem when a pitchers show emotions, so they should not have a problem with him when he showboats a HR. Baseball is a game of failures nothing wrong with celebrating or showing cockiness when you come thru,

Went to South Hills game today. Embarrasing to watch a high school kid showboat on a homerun. He stands there to admire it and then big leagues it around the bases a la Manny Ramirez. Show some class and run around the bases like you've done it before. I lost respect for South Hills baseball today. The teams with Giambi, Lidle, and Wooten back in the day wouldn't play that way!!!

Went to the SH game, what a game, great defense on both sides, great pitching for SH Derik, consistent control hitting corners. Delafuete did not just a HR, that was a bomb.
Looking forward to Saturday trying to decide wish game to watch.

With the clouds looking very ominous and some slight drizzles Diamond Ranch was able to play a FULL seven innings without any delays or thoughts about cancelling. Even though you made you're point in a sarcastic way, I kind of agree with you on this one, in that I do wish Amat were playing in a higher division.

Perhaps they wouldn’t be a favorite to win, or perhaps they would only go a round or two in D1, but at the very least they would compete.

Nevertheless, I tend to believe that even if Amat was able to secure a CIF Championship in D2 or D1 that, it somehow wouldn’t change the way you act. You (and all the other haters) would still be out there bashing Amat over something silly.

So, the best thing to do here, is to just sit back and enjoy a potential CIF banner hanging from the rafters of a local (SGV) school. The least you could do, is to be proud that one of our own did so well.
