What will happen in 2008?
1. Bishop Amat
2. South Hills
3. Diamond Ranch
4. Bonita
5. Charter Oak
6. West Covina
7. San Dimas
8. Glendora
9. Northview
10. South El Monte
This is the top ten I wrote in January, but since we've had coaching changes at Bishop Amat, Los Altos, Gladstone, Azusa, Wilson and Sierra Vista, so there will be changes when I unveil the "Spring 2008 Top Ten" with comments, and the "Super 31," next Monday. We'll discuss who's on the rise, who's going to fall, who's under pressure, etc, etc, it all starts next Monday when Spring Practices begin to heat up, and we'll keep it going through the SGV All-Star game on June 27, followed by the Summer Passing League and our final march to the fall. For now, how should our spring top ten look next week?

GOOD POINT: This was part of a comment left by Bracketology on the "Blog" thread, who made a real good point in discussing Felipe Aguilar taking over for Gano this week.
It read: Gano calls it quits on Wednesday and when you read the thread for the rest of the week, it's all about people who think they are "experts" and already have questioned whether Aguilar will even win a game next year. Now, if the blogs were active when Gano first got the job at LA, there is not a shadow of a doubt that many of you would have persecuted Rob Roberts for the hire because, "He wasn't a winner."

Fred's thought: He is so right, If Gano was following DeSpain today, bloggers would never have given him a chance. And what did he go on and do, win four championships? Give Aguilar some time, even with Gano coming back this wasn't a team with a lot of expectations for 2008. It was and still is a rebuilding year, so if you're a Los Altos fan, be patient with Aguilar, give him a couple of years to turn things around before you bring out the hammer.

Ya, and that was a gift! Damien just isn't what the use to be. Sorry truth hurts buddy!

Just think what the SH, SD, or Bonita staffs would do with the guys you get. SD staff turned a 1-9 Freshman class into one of the premier teams in the valley. SH staff is great, and the Bonita staff has a ton of coaching experience.

Your guys just aren't that good!

Even I would not go so far as to say that Chris Rix puts Amat over the top. It is nice to have him official and we can thank the CIF eliminating the Association Rule for making that happen. With Chris's offseason/yearound training with QBs it would have made no sense for him to be an "official" coach. Now he can.

However, even with the potential that the staff holds - you gotta earn that #1 ranking and I'm OK with SGV FAN putting CO at the top. They've been around a while and have earned it. Heck, maybe even SH is #2 - but watch out for #3. We'll see starting Monday at Spring Practice how the kids respond to all of the great leadership that has been provided.

Oh, what a difference a year makes!

Something is brewing at San Dimas. I heard rumors that some good coaches are headed their way.

With the talent coming back, this team could do some damage.

10. DAM

Great coaching staffs, kids would be lucky to play for any of these teams!

CO- Obviously the core has been there forever.

BA- Wondering if the athletic talent of the staff can translate into good coaching.

SH- Solid program with solid coaches.

SD- Great young staff. Look for this program to be around for awhile.

LA- Depends on new HC

How'd the boy like his first year as a Trojan?

Spring ball starts next week and I expect a much higher pace, attention to detail, team pride (not false bravado), and less tolerance for slippage. You came to a practice last spring, you should come by in a few weeks to compare.

I'd suspect that other coaches would respect what we are trying to do. You know what it's like to be on a quality staff - plain fun whether you are the top dog or not.

The list was a response to the wishful thinking of a poster about Gilmore's transfer. I think a bundle of people took Freddies April Fools joke for the truth. You never know about something like that until it happens...or doesn't. And until it doesn't, like Jim Carey said in "Dumb and Dumber",

"So you're tellin me there's a chance...!"

My Pal Joey,

Love the list but what's this one in reference to? Pretty impressive list by the way.

When does Spring Ball start?

Amazing who's missing from that list huh?

Here's a list I'd like to see.

Rank the best assistant coaching staffs in the San Gabriel Valley. I know Amat would be on top but after that it get very interesting.

Had dinner with a couple of coaches, and one former Catholic school HC, and when I told them about your staff they all said essenially the same thing,,,,"Boy would I want to be a fly on that wal!" And when they asked about the lower level positions, seeing as Amat is cleaning house and getting things in order, they said, to a man, "Hell...I'd coach at the lower levels there! No problem!"

Seems Amat has a lot of credibility going into next season for qualified coaches to take lower level jobs just to be part of the rebuilding and part of that new flood of talent that they all believe will come in the next couple of years.

Best of luck Joey.

Joey M,

I was only listing graduates. And you're correct - I actually meant to write MICHAEL Wagner who went on to Iowa State (but in my head was probably thinking the same things as you about Marcus!).

Lets hope that Brent and Darian put up some numbers to be included.

Joey M. said:

Joe Amat whats wrong with Brent Seals and Darian Johnson on that list. Marcus Wagner on that list? What did he do his two years there but be injury prone and did not light it up as he should of. I like the idea of bringing Fields kid from Rancho C. to play at Amat.

Joe Amat said:

Amat traditionally doesn't accept senior transfers, but....

Eric Bieniemy

Donnie McCleskey

Jonathan Cornell
...an addition to the list would be nice!

that first post wasnt a diss at the Miramonte League i know there all good teams and anyone can win league and that was just to retaliate at That SD guy or number 1 rival but u got to look at it at my perspective im a currently in the program and you dont go into the season thinking you cant win league you go in thinking you van win and either youll back up what u say or someone shuts u up

dear CO RULES

Ur retarded we werent the greatest team but we were above average even if Diamond Ranch didnt forfit their games we would have still been in CIF heres how the standings would have been in league if d Ranch didnt have to forefit their games

1.Charter Oak 4-0 well deserved are a good team and program
wins were All of Miramonte

2. Diamond Ranch 3-1 another good team and up incomming program
wins were All of Miramonte except Charter oak

3. Bonita 2-2 an undersized and consatntly under-rate team that plays with what they have
Wins Los Altos and Wilson

top 3 in cif

4. Wilson 1-3 Phenomal running back in gilmore
Win Los Altos

5. Los Altos 0-4 good team that got hit with injuries
Wins NONE

2008 Predictions

1. Diamond Ranch or Bonita
both are good teams with lots of returning starters

2. Los Altos or Charter Oak
both have questions to answer in los altos being new head coach and charter oak being almost completely new starting lineups

3. Wilson great RB but the rest of the team will have to rise to the occasion but they are consatntly an under-rate team

GOOD LUCK MIRAMONTE ILL SEE YOU IN OCTOBER

for those that are reading this quote for the first time, I want to reiterate that I wrote this about amat towards the end of Vertis two seasons, when a suggestion was made to hire a more mature coach to mentor him and help "right the ship".

I still stand by what I wrote at the time - the only difference might be that FA has those kinds of guys around him already. If that was part of the deal from the start, MV may not have gotten himself in as much hot water.

I definitely feel your pain, but I'd guess that that Gano leaned on DeSpain and the assistants quite a bit his first couple of years too.

So you must have an amat nation t-shirt also because that type of thinking goes with the t-shirt. I for one was embarresed by some of the trash thrown at Verti by are own people. Who gives a crap what LA fans say about us . The only place to settle it is on the field and we both know that will never happen. Leave them to their own problems and as far as the bashing of Verti they were only echoing what many AMAT people led off the witch hunt with by their posts. By the way I have never seen " count on it " as being a supporter of AMAT. Could you possibly be a LA fan in diguise because we all know who the true LANCERS are and we have all caught hell for it, right guys, and I don't think your one of us.

It is their time now to go thru what we went thru. It is all in good fun so I hope they can take what got dished out towards Amat and their young coach. Felipe will fry if he dont put up wins.

COUNT ON IT,
I think you might be a little mistaken. Yes some of the AMAT people let their feelings on Verti go wild on the blog. But for you to make a statement that we would go after the new coach at LA is a little far fetched. We really only care about our house and no other.Call it selfish but so be it. I believe if you read some of the posts we are defending the choice as to the point of give the guy a chance and do not do what happened to Verti. I believe the heat will come for the LA faithful as you have already read in some of the posts. Maybe you should address your statement to them instead of the AMAT faithful.

Joe Amat said:

Having met, and watched, Felipe a number of times as a football and a baseball player I know that he is a great young man, as was Mark Verti. The qualities that made both of them formidable players are the same qualities that could make both of them formidable coaches. They were not the most talented, but had great work ethic and were extremely intelligent (MV to UCLA, FA to Pomona-Pitzer)

Felipe could learn from the mistakes that were made at Amat and the advantage that LA has is that he will have mentors around and, from his interview, looks like he will try to keep his experienced staff around him - which MV didn't do.

good luck to Felipe...but not too much!:?)

I do think that with a more experienced group of assistants (like Felipe will have at LA) MV may have fared a little better.

The last thing i want to see (and I'm sure it's going to happen) is people coming on here during the season and ripping Felipe Aguilar saying he is a horrible coach while Los Altos is struggling. Let me put it this way: LOS ALTOS WILL STRUGGLE NEXT SEASON REGARDLESS OF THE COACH.

They would struggle even if Gano, Farrar, Podley, Pasqy, and Bogan were all on the same staff so don't start ripping him when Gano took off once it looked like there was going to be an uphill battle.

Los Altos said:

If Bobby is a better candidate, why didn't we go after him. Amat has three coaches with NFL experience and we have...what... A great D coordinator and that's it. And how long will we have that coordinator for. I see Gano doing the Marion Ancich and coming back when his pupil fails.

LA Football said:

From what I understand another one of Gano's former players just inherited his own program. Bobby Godinez, who played with Aguilar at LA was just named the head coach at La Verne Lutheran. From what I hear, this guy knows his stuff and has Division one college and professional football experience on his side. Maybe even more suitable than Aguilar at LA?

They've already won their first CIF basketball title, could they be starting something big on the football side? Orange Lutheran did.

Gano must know what he's doing if he's producing head coaches like this. A real compliment to him as a coach.

Amat vs. West Covina, should be a fun game to watch. Lot of the kids know and played together or against each other during their Jr All American days. Hopefully, Mag will have a game plan to keep the game from becoming a blow out in Amat's favor, especially when the game is played at Kiefer and against a very highly talented group of new coaches that are under pressure to win games expected from their rabid fans.

Fred, I think South Hills has the potential to have the strongest team... but they will need a strong and fast start. San Dimas will be stronger than last year. They're adding an interior lineman... don't know his name, but he's a big guy that will help. They also have some youngsters coming back from injury and a ton of returning players. My son plays for the saints and I'm totally honored to have Coach Zernikow on the sidelines. He's not just a fantastic coach, but a fine person who sets a tremendous example for the young men on the team. The fact that the Saints' league has been changed away from the Oaks Christian league, all the teams in league this year will have a chance to go deeper in the playoffs! I think this will bode well for Northview, San Dimas, and possibly Baldwin Park. Should be a great season...

I love hearing that same old saving. How do you get head coaching experience without being a head coach? Well I would say get your head coaching experience not at a top program. Look at Verti, I would say he would be successful in a lower level program and work through the growing pains of a young head coach. A young head coach needs to work through his own identity and find what works for him.

As for LA, he will be fine. The assistant coaches are coming back and they have years of experience. Lets not campare the two situations, There are not a lot of expectations for LA next year because the team was strong with 08 graduates. Verti brought in a lot of young coaches and didn't want to listen to the old timers. Filepe is a smart guy and will utilize his resourses. Gano is Los Altos guy and he will be there to assist.

Lack of talent coming back is going to really be the downfall, mix that in with the young coach and the growing pains will develope. Verti had no one around him worth mentioning and he fell face down. At least Felipe has Gano you cannot get a better Consigleri then that when making a change.

As far as winning now I think since it has been stated over and over they are not expecting too much this year so he will have a small cushion as far as winning now. But at least they should give him a chance instead of reading the noose.

Perhaps. However, Verti was also "groomed" by his mentor and look what happened...he did not do so well.

As for the old question about "how do you get experience without having it ?" Well, like the army says, "we will give you the experience, just start here !!"

In other words, you start at smaller programs and then you build a resume.

Also, one intersting point that is made here, is of course the fact the Gano will not be entirly gone.

That however, raise's more questions than answers because unlike the situation with Verti, it was his show to run.

This new coach at Los Altos will always be looking over his shoulder becasue the fan's will be calling for Gano to step back in if the program faluters.

It's a no win situation here for coach because, the team is not expected to do well this year and he is stepping in "wet behind the ears."

The way I see it is that the only way out of it, is if he wins right away.

Does anyone out there think that maybe Gano was mentoring the new coach all along because he knew that he would be his successor.
