MVP, MVP, MVP
Playoffs start next week, and what makes the Tribune baseball MVP great is that post-season weighs heavily. Will it be someone from Northview, Bishop Amat, Bonita, Damien, San Dimas or Charter Oak? Quite possibly. I have a few in mind already. I know who I would pick if I had to do it today. But I'm not going to say. I don't want to put any more pressure on these players than they already have going into next week. Good luck all, I'm expecting a wild playoff run.

Fred
Just reading all the blogs. I would give the MVP to all the kids.
come on - take some grammar lessons and stop propping your own son - this is pathetic
my vote goes to Garcia of Walnut or Pill from Covina
go baby go
One stud in that group and his pitching was lights out...
Go Saints
Just win baby and take us to the promised land.
No Walnut didn't win any of the big 3 sports. Walnut did win 12 league title. Can any on beat that.
MVP MVP MVP
Leyland Drossel Ponzo
Three studs, CO MVP
Nuff said
Fred
MVP is a great Ideal, but what are you looking for in a MVP? Are you looking for a kid who played on a great team like BA, NV or Covina? Are you looking for a player who has been there all season for his team? Sure I have seen SH pitcher and Covina Pill. They have great teams back them up. But are they put in to pitch with no warm in the 5th, or the 6th inning? I don’t think so. How many game saving hits do they have?
Yes Walnut record suck do to coaching, but Garcia have been call in time after time to come in, and pitch. No he didn’t save many games being down by 4, or 5 runs. He did stop the bleeding. He is also the kid who comes up with the big hit in the 6th, and 7th. Just ask Nogales, and WC. That why when playing SH the San Diego state scout came to Walnut after what he did against SH. He has no errors in the out field. That is why he is my pick for MVP. I also would be looking at the SS for Rowland. He is a good ball player
umm im gonna have to go with JORDAN FOX!!!
that guy is a stud!!
Scooter Mg
Hey dudes it Mother's Day. Everyone give it rest and enjoy the day. This MVP stuff is a negative vibe. We shouldn't be putting down players but congratulating them for their efforts. Scooter give it a frggin rest and get your facts straight before you come on here and talk trash.
Everyone have a great Mother's Day.
Correction...
Looks like 7 over last three years!
I also see that Reynoso from Western had 8.
I know everyone will put down his league....
Shooter boy(SD blow hard)
It's interesting to see the SD stats of seven games appeared on MAX and when season was over they re-appeared. Probably needed though games to build up your boy.
We'll our coach posted all year long and Jio M has to be considered. He had a great year!
I also would say looking at the year Danny P had at Damein would be right up there too!
Shooter (AKA SD player)
Since you are voting for your boy, Lets look at the real facts.
Your boy was hitting .362 going into final games with BP. Pomona, and Ganesha... And they have a combined record of what?
Your boy so called power of 7 hr over last years came against who? 5 of this year came off who?
Wow, some guys in the SGV hit 8+ in one year and slg percentage is over 1.0000
Better understand what a power hitter really is before putting your boy up there.
And since you mentioned that Ponzo, and Lively.. where's their batting average at this year? In the tank...
NEXT?
Shooter Mcgavin
Don't get too caught up in the emotionality of the MVP issue; you're arguing with kids.
Shooter (SD stats boy)
Now we know you have a link to the SD bb team. You obviously know more about the players than we do. Nice commentary from a f'd up idiot. Is that the best you can do? I'm not getting hot anymore...Please quote us some more of your stat knowledge this is getting more interesting.
I WAS WRONG ABOUT THE KID GETTING THE LOSE HE JUST GAVE UP 7 OF THE EIGHT RUNS MY BAD. AND YOUR WELCOME FOR LETTING YOU KNOW HOW GOOD YOUR SON AND HIS TEAMATE IS ANYTIME JUST AS LONG AS YOU REALIZE HE HAS NO SHOT TO WIN THE MVP AWARD OVER PILL OR ANDRADE EVEN ELIAS OR PEDROZA ARE MORE WORTHY OF THE AWARD!
Shooter, (SD Stats boy)
You really get me hot every time you try to quote stats. But get your facts straight. Your wrong about Drossel losing to BP, it was the third starter that lost. Keep trying though to impress me, it really gets me going. I hope you are not as F'd up as you are in the movie. That would be a downer.
Scooter Magavin,
Thanks for promoting your boy Jordan. Yes he is awesome. Thanks for lettingus bloggers know how good Chris Drossel is. He is awesome as well. Thanks for giving him your vote for MVP> Now crawl back in your hole.
THIS IS FOR THAT LAME DUDE THAT SAID THE NUMBER ARE BS DO YOU KNOW HOW TO READ THE PAPER? IF YOU DO THEN YOU WOULD SEE ANDRADES NAME IN THERE EVERY TIME THERE IS A BIG GAME ON BOTH SIDES OFFENSE AND PITHCING! A FEW WEEKS BACK I REMEBER FRED SAYING MURPHY WAS GONNA GIVE HIM STATS SO FRED WOULD KNOW WHO WAS DOING WHAT AND I BELIEVE HE DID BECAUSE FRED BUT ANDRADES STATS IN THE PAPER HE WAS HITTING ABOUT .450 WITH GREAT PITCHING STATS. SINCE THEN I KNOW HE HAS BEEN ON FIRE HE NOW HAS 5 OR 6 HRS AND HAS TO BE HITTING AROUND .500 SO MUCH FOR THE BS YOUR TALKING ABOUT WITH NORTHVIEW TEAM BESIDES FRED GOES TO A MAJORITY OF THERE GAMES ANYWAY AND HE KEEPS HIS OWN STATS ON THE GAMES HE GOES TO. AS FOR PILL AND COVINA DONT KNOW BUT EVRYTIME I SEE THAT BOY PLAY IM IMPRESSED.
SO HERE IS THE STORY AGAIN SINCE YOU DIDNT HERE THE FIRST TIME, LEYLAND IS A BETTER CANIDATE FOR MVP ON THAT TEAM, HE JUST FLAT OUT HITS. HE IS HITTING .417 (2ND ON THE TEAM 43 POINTS HIGHER THAN THE NEXT GUY) WITH 5HRS (1ST ON THE TEAM NEXT GUY WITH ONLY 2 HES THE ONLY REAL POWER GUY ON THE TEAM) AND 28 RBIS (2ND GUY IN RBIS ON THE TEAM HAS HALF AT 14). SO NOW THIS IS WHERE YOU SAY HE DID IT AGAINST POOR TEAMS SO MY REPLY TO THAT IS IF THOSE TEAMS ARE SO BAD THEN WHY DID DROSSEL LOSE TO BP??? IM SURE YOULL HAVE A GOOD EXCUSE FOR THAT! HERE IS SOME MORE STATS FOR YOU PONSO 35 IP, 2.38 ERA, 30 K'S. LIVELY 39 IP, 1.95 ERA 41 K'S. DROSSEL 59 IP, 1.53 ERA, 54 K'S! WHY THOSE STATS JUST SO EVRYONE CAN SEE HE IS ONE OF THREE LEGIT GUYS ON THE STAFF IS HE THE WORK HORSE YES BETTER THAN THE OTHER TWO BOYS BARLEY, LEYLAND IS BY FAR THE BEST HITTER ON THAT TEAM NUMBERS SHOW IT. DROSSEL SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ALL AREA TEAM BUT I JUST DONT THINK HE HAS DONE ENOUGH AT THE PLATE TO BE MVP! IF YOU WERE GOING TO BASE MVP STRICKLY ON PITCHING THEN JUST GIVE IT TO THE WHOLE VVL LET EM ALL SHARE IT!
Shooter Mcgavin
Quit shooting blanks big MCG
Leyland Mvp numbers?? That's a joke compared to others in SGV.
If you really look at the numbers Leyland last seven games produced 12 hits against who? Do the math before BP, Ganesha, Pomona and tell me the story again.
The only reason SD is even in the hunt is because of the Chris Drosell.
Another Observer - Drossel wasn't the only pitcher in the VVL who had his offense and defense missing in some big games. Can anyone forget Covina's huge baserunning "blunder" in their game against Northview? LOL
Another Observer - Drossel isn't the only pitcher in the VVL that has had great pitching performances, but in the big games had little or no offense or defense behind him. Not to mention routine plays and baserunning errors. It makes it a lot easier on a pitcher when he can trust his defense and doesn't feel like he has to strike everyone out. Can anyone ever forget the huge "blunder" in the Northview/Covina game? I would agree with Shooter on his opinions.
All you fans -
I got my own opinion on who should be MVP - I got to say this about the guy from San Dimas - in the games that were highly publicized ty the Tribune - Drossel outpitched the other top three pitchers in the VVL - going head to head, toe to toe. What more can you say?
MVP? Got to be the best pitcher in the league, maybe the area.
Tiffany brought crap to the dugout with his kisses to his kids, grossed everyone out and had no clue on how to wear a uniform. The boy was relieved when Pops was let go and now he gets to sit out there with every other second guessing parent from Charter Oak.
Shooter Mcgavin
Nobody really knows the true numbers from Covina or NV, since they don't post.
Oh but wait, they'll come out now in the meetings.
Total BS
Scooter Mac
Yeah your talking about some offense as well. But look at this, Drossel put his team in a postion to win each and every game. Offense behind him was missing in a least four games. His numbers may not show it but with his bat, doing the things that do not show up in the highly rated numbers, he performed the tasks that his coaches needed. Drossel was more complete than what you give him credit for.
Sure drossel can pitch but what has he done with the bat? leyland has better mvp numbers than him! If it goes to anyone in the vvl it should be Andrade or Pill. Pill is a more complete player, Andarde seem to know how to hit the long ball, lets see who does more in playoffs. I dont think either team will win more than two games!
Drossel OR Pertusati
BOTH WERE DOMINATE IN THEIR PERFORMANCES ALL YEAR AND PLAYED IN SOME TUFF LEAGUES!
DROSSEL 1.5 ERA, 59 IP .58 ERA IN LEAGUE...WOW JUST A GREAT KID AND A COMPETITOR
PERTUSATI: MONSTER STATS WITH BOMBS TO BOOT...... D2 LEAGUE...
GOOD LUCK FRED, ITS GOING TO TUFF TO CHOOSE...
Fred J,
Seems as if pitching is in the spotlight this year. You got to go with a couple of guys this year for MVP. ELias and Drossel were outstanding in the big games. Drossel was lights out in every big game SD had to win. Can't say enough about the guy. Good luck to both players. I'm sure they both have huge futures ahead.
Justaflukecif,
Tiffany brought nothing to the table last year except a lot of politics, Nichols brings much more to the table he coached 4 players that made the bigs, Tiffany 0 players
Garcia of Walnut is a water polo player and has just has his bess baseball season. hit a homerun against west covina yesterday. he is only a junior and is think of playing qb in football this year.
CO pitching is not what it was last year. The two starters have had problems all year. The coaching staff is lost without Tiffany. 1 game and out in CIF
ERA - 2.176
IP - 74.0
BF - 333
K - 93
GS - 11
W - 8
L - 3
SV - 1
App - 3
CG - 6
w% 727
Batted .352
was the work horse for the team. pitched a complete 2 10 innging complete games. played his heart out everytime he played. duarte and michael faram doesnt get alot of press but this kid should. the schools name shouldnt be more inportant then the players.
fly on the wall -
I think you have been sniffing too much sticky tape. The last time that I checked, baseball was a team sport. You can't place all the blame on your teammates when you lose and take all the credit when you win. The four shutout that you are so proud of came against teams with a combined record of 32-64-1. One victory against a team with a winning record in nine starts, may smell sweet to you, but it smell like a load of crap to anyone with a discerning nose. So, I would recommend trying figure out how to become a good teammate, rather than a wantabe mvp. Otherwise, you never know when you could get smacked by another flyswatter.
Jordan Fox for MVP. He jump starts the Amat offense. He is the best hitter in the SGV.
Yeah you folks have mentioned some good contenders for MVP. I'm going to include Drossel the pitcher from San Dimas. The guy has pitched won some big games against a couple of D 1 and D 2 schools. In league he had some tremdous games against the best teams, ERA of 0 against NV and COV. THe nine innings against NV was an awesome performance. He's defnitely up there with the league's best.
IT'S GOT TO BE MARC ANDRADE FROM NORTHVIEW. HE HAS NEVER HAD THE LUXURY OF STARTING A GAME AND CONTROLLING IT FROM THE BEGINNING, HE HAS COME IN UNDER PRETTY STRENUOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, I WON'T BORE YOU ALL WITH A BUNCH OF STATS, BUT IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT NV'S GAMES AGAINST COVINA AND SD ALONE. ANDRADE HAS THE OFFENSIVE STATS TO MATCH IT. BUT HIS STRONGEST ATTRIBUTE IS, BY FAR, HE IS FEARLESS. HE WANTS THE BALL IN EVERY TIE GAME WITH BASES LOADED, HE WANTS TO BAT EVERY TIME THE GAME IS ON THE LINE. AND NV IS NUMBER #1. HE HAS BEEN A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION IN EVERY NV WIN. MARC ANDRADE = MVP

Fred i believe your choice is your favorite player, all year you have promoted him by saying "bound to". So there are other guys getting scholarship but you never mention them.
Bottom line is scoreboard, all the ifs and could have will be forgotten at the end of the year, no excuses. Andrade has delivered the wins, no ifs, buts and coulds. MVP for Andrade and i do not belong to NV as matter of fact i cant stand their parents.
Danny Pertusati, this kid has been dominating since his sophmore year, he leads the league in Hr's and Bat Avg, kid is a stud when he's on the field and has lead his team to the playoffs in D2, not D5!
Andrade is a good choice but like Amat, Northview is loaded with contributes that have been productive all year. Garkow has been nails all year despite a lack of offense and defense. Starting off 0-3 wasn't his fault. He has won 5 consecutive games, 4 by shutout, and has a 1.25 ERA for the season. He's definitly CO's MVP and should be considered as such by the Trib.
my pick would have to be andrade. Northview has won 3 straight titles since he joined the team and he has been the key to that.He has been hitting home runs at crucial points in the game to give northview the win. He has been a player of the week here in the tribune. He throws a 93 mph fastball per the scouts that have clocked him.And has scouts from the pros looking at him.I could go on and on but thats enough for now.and an MVP has to be someone who has won the league title just like KOBE.
Tyler as in CIF Championship Pitcher Garkow from Charter Oak
Tyler "in the BUFF"-ing-ton
Amats:
Tommy Reyes
Jordan Fox
Andrew Mistone
It does not get any better than these three Lancers. Print it!
hmm.... i wounder if its gonna be a Northview guy. Well whoever it is they should put up great offensive numbers and have a big impact on defense or PITCH. Pill, Andrade, Mier, Fox, all would be good choices. id lean more towards a league champ or even better a CIF champ
Fred alot has been said about having an Athlete of the Year Award that crosses all sports. Great idea and ultimately long overdue seeing as it gives Track, Swimming and Water Polo athletes a chance to be recognized for their outstanding efforts against the traditional BIG TICKET SPORTS. Another great aspect to this award is a recognition of the 2 and 3 sport athlete. I hope part of this award makes mention of something outside of sports...leadership, character and academics.
In that vein I would like to see if a Coach of the Year Award could also be given that crosses all sports. I believe, given the recent events, that no coach exemplifies what a Coach of the Year should be more than Damien's Coach Frank Lucero.
His story illustrates the best that is high school sports. The "kids come first" attitude and the belief that academics and hard work not only make champions but make men of character and distinction and are timeless values that are in short supply given today's hostile win at all cost sports environment.
A coach is more than someone who prepares you for the field of competition. He is in many cases a surrogate father figure, a friend and a mentor for the road ahead to young students. Life long lessons taught to us by coaches can have both positive and negative affects on our lives, Coach Lucero is a man of extraordinary conviction, character and acccomplishment.
So Fred, I respectfully nominate Coach Frank Lucero for the 1st Annual San Gabriel Valley Coach of the Year Award. I thnk most great coaches will tell you, and their players will agree, the best coaching happens before and after the game when no one is looking and no one is keeping score....but the man upstairs.
Thanks Fred for the article and gettig the word out about our Coach.
Long Live Sparta!
You've got to look at an MVP as someone whose team wouldn't have gotten where they are without him. As good as Mier and Pill are, where are their teams? Second and third in their leagues!!!
Not to change subjects but can we get some props for Western Christian baseball if they win today they are leage champs of the Christian league they've had a great year and diserve some recongnition. They also have akid named Mark Reynoso that has had an awesome year and deserves some MVP talk.
As great as Amat is, if the season ended today, the player I have in mind isn't a Lancer. But that could change after they win the championship. Who knows.
Great guess William,Now we need a name !
Let me guess.....duh, someone from Bishop Amat?
My vote is that Mier kid from Bonita. Or maybe Pill from Covina.
