Softball: Glendora, Bishop Amat, win

| | Comments (57) |

Semi-bound: Wow, who would have thought Glendora and Bishop Amat would be in the semifinals this season, especially in the difficult divisions they compete in. Should make for a great Tuesday along with San Dimas in a semifinal too.

Saturday's quarterfinal games
Division II
Glendora 3, Vista Murrieta 2
Division IV
Bishop Amat 1, Alemany 0
Division VI
Calvary Murrieta 1, South El Monte 0

Tuesday's semifinals
Division II
Glendora vs. Garden Grove Pacifica
Kennedy at El Modena
Division IV
Ocean View at Pomona Catholic
Bishop Amat-Alemany winner vs. Downey
Division V
Torrance-Whittier Christian winner vs. San Dimas
North Torrance at El Segundo
Division VI
Riverside at Paraclete
South El Monte-Calvary Murrieta winner vs. Woodcrest Christian

THEY DID IT: Those we're not going anywhere San Dimas High softballers pulled it out against San Jacinto, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to take a 2-0 lead, then had to battle out of a 2-1, bases loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh, and dit it. Going to be corny here because the Saints do go marching on straight to Tuesday's CIF-SS Division V semifinal. You tell em coach, "That was the most exciting 20 minutes I've ever seen," Don Pollard said on the rather loud busride home.

Friday Update: Friday's Glendora High School game against Vista Murrieta has been postponed again. They have rescheduled for Saturday at 3:15 p.m. at Glendora. San Dimas is on their way to play San Jacinto High at Desert Hot Springs High School, whose field is in better shape. San Dimas-San Jacinto will resume their 0-0 game in the top of the seventh, Saints have a runner on first, no outs. Bishop Amat is playing Saturday at 1 p.m. at home. South El Monte was on their way to Calvary Murrieta for a Div. VI quarterfinal game, but that was postponed at 2:15 p.m. They have rescheduled for Saturday at 3:15 p.m.

Crazy thunderstorms and hail cancelled several games on Thursday. The Bishop Amat-Alemany softball game has been rescheduled for Saturday at Bishop Amat at 1 p.m. It was an act of God for the Alemany girls, who have prom tonight. Soon as they heard it was canceled, they started getting ready in the Amat gym. Also, just got an update that the Glendora-Vista Murrieta game was halted in the second inning, and then postponed. I've also just learned the Vista Murrieta-South El Monte game was canceled and rescheduled for Friday. Stevie R., reports that it's all sunny in North Torrance, so the Northview game is on as scheduled. San Dimas High School was on the road against San Jacinto High for its Div. V quarterfinal, but the game was halted in the seventh inning in a 0-0 game. "It started pouring," Saints coach Don Pollard said. "They delayed it and we tried to restart it, but we couldn't get it in." When it resumes this afternoon, San Dimas has a runner on first with no outs in the top of the seventh.

Northview story: Click thread to read Stevie R's story on the Vikings' 2-1 loss to North Torrance in 11 innings.

Here's my story for Friday on the Northview game:

TORRANCE - There will be no CIF-Southern Section divisional title for the Northview High School softball team.
But the Vikings died hard.
Northview withstood two scoring chances by North Torrance in extra innings - including a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the ninth - before finally succumbing on an RBI single by Alexis Vernon in the 11th that pushed the host Saxons into the semifinals with a 2-1 victory in a Division V quarterfinal game.
North Torrance improved to 22-10 and will face El Segundo, which beat defending division champion Hesperia, in Tuesday's semifinals. Northview, which enjoyed one of its finest seasons, finished 21-7.
"We had plenty of chances," said Northview coach Jeff Butler, whose team wasted a lead-off double by pitcher Hannah Fraijo in the 10th. "We just couldn't get that key hit and we made (mistakes) that cost us.
"You can only go to the well so many times. They made the plays when they needed to and we just couldn't get it done there at the end."
Northview, which tied the score in the fifth on doubles by catcher Heather Harrison and right fielder Kaylan Rodriguez, did a good job of staving off elimination.
North Torrance, which got three hits from Vernon and two hits each from Amanda Wondergem and Bailee Haberman, was on the verge of winning in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Saxons, following a lead-off single by Samantha Availar, had the potential winning run on third base with one out in the eighth. But Fraijo, who had five strikeouts, held them off following a pair of groundouts.
North Torrance, getting a lead-off double by Haberman, then loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth. But Fraijo again was up to the task. She struck out Alex Perez before getting Hayley Rodriguez on a popup and Availar on a groundout.
"Hannah pitched a great game," Butler said. "She made great pitches when she needed to make pitches. Even in the last inning when they scored, it wasn't her making mistakes. We made mistakes behind her.
"Hannah Fraijo is the premier pitcher in the Valley. For her to get out of a bases-loaded situation against these guys was just amazing. It was all her, just making great pitches."
But she couldn't overcome a Vikings miscue in the 11th.
The key break for the Saxons, who got a lead-off single from Haberman, occurred when second baseman Karolina Arteaga dropped a throw from Harrison on an attempted steal.
Valerie Rodriguez then bunted for a hit before Vernon won it with a line-drive single to center.
"It was a great season, maybe the best this school's ever had," Butler said. "The kids played hard. It was a great year for us. It's just a tough way to end it."

Reina Gaber pitched a 6 hitter striking out 5 and the Eagles left the bases loaded in the 4th and left runners on 2nd and 3rd in the fifth. It came down to timely hitting, the Eagles couldn't get it when they needed it and the Warriors capitalized. With 2 outs in the sixth they got a double to right from pitcher Tory Ferriera (11 k's), a single moved her to third and a bloop single behind second base scored the only run they needed.

Any way Go luck to all the area teams that are playing today and this weekend. Go Amat!!!

Is all this back and forth really necessary? Let's concentrate on who's playing and support them.

SHUT UP! said:

San Dimas advances,
Yeah your the adult in all this who started it? You should be the one that should be ashamed because you stared all of this! Pointing out players like that. I sense jealousy!! Is your daughter supposed to be a pitcher or maybe you think she's is one. Maybe that's the problem! You think your kid is something she not! maybe you should move your kid to San Dimas since your such an LA hater go show your love to the D5 school she will certainly shine there!

San Dimas Advances said:

LA Softball mom we can go back and forth all day long. And I'm sure that those were LA parents. PLEASE! Any way I'll be the adult and end this back and forth blogging. Bottom line is LA is out.

Good luck once again to all the area ball teams still playing! Keep up the good work and continue playing as a TEAM!

LA softball mom said:

Please read everything before you put your foot in your mouth, are you sure these are LA softball parents or other's comment's?? Like I said before Good Luck to SGV teams still in CIF, both Baseball and Softball!

Good game NV! Way to battle until the very end!!! 11 innings WOW!

All other area schools Good luck!!!

San Dimas Advances said:

You all don't really know what your talking about. Still making excuses... We all know what our girls can do and maybe what should of happened. That's every other schools same story or should I say excuse... Any way before you start putting me down you should really research what i've blogged before you say it. Take a look at my ealier blogs I'm the only one from all of you that was wishing good luck to all the other area teams. It was the rest of you LA parents that weren't wishing any other teams good luck. You all were just focused on athlete of the year and bashing lower division schools.

Should of been adressed to San Dimas advances

San Dimas Advances said:

Please do not bunch everyone together from this blog and that includes you! There are several players and parents that lost with dignity and yes we are very aware of us losing, its just to bad our girls werent all there on the same page on Tuesday. So it was a tough loss and some of us took it harder then others.
And for the answer to the question about why are we still on the blog unlike you there are people that congradulate other teams and wish good luck to them, and I can honestly say that I am one of them. I am very proud of our LA softball team and especially proud of my daughter I know she gave it her ALL.

san dimas advances said:

Your right we should act like adults and take our loss with dignity, but when parents like you and others blog negative things about LA's softball team, it makes it difficult not to want to respond so please take some of your own advice and stop being negative, and yes we did loss on Tuesday to Paloma Valley and they were the better team that came out to play that day!! But it sure would have been nice to see our girls finish this season like we know that they can play instead of making some of the mistakes that they made!!!

Hey, how come there is nothing on Pomona Catholic softball, they are in the 4th round of CIF and having a hell of a season. This is really sad cause i thought this was a website that cover all sgv prep teams. Yet, u guys cover teams in Chino Hills and ignore a team like this in pomona, and i know this website cover teams in Pomona like Pomona High, Gary High and Diamond Ranch who are located in the same city. What's the reason? Are they not good enough to be mention in the paper, and Just to help you with that question they Are, cause they just Beat the number 1 team in the division on the road and if you notice they are in the same divison as Bishop Amat, who by the way are still trying to get in the 4th round of CIF. I think they do deserve being mention, so now i ask can someone please fix this problem?

To all you LA people
First let me start by saying that I'm not putting any player down. What I'm putting down is the behavior of the adults blogging that DLP should be the only one considered for player of the year! I'm putting down the fact that so many of you say it's all DLP but the team made errors or wait it was the coaching! Not once have any of you admitted that you LOST. Just face it you played against a "TEAM" that was better! I've seen DLP pitch and she is a good pitcher but so are so many other girls in the local area! And for a 12 year old girl hitting some other teams pitching, well that really talking bad about the players of other teams. Same on all you LA people or so called adults! Oh just one more thing, I'm not a parent from SD or NV just a parent from LA! I'm truly ashamed that our parents from LA can't give credit where credit is due! Take the loss with dignity and stop blogging idiotic messages. Hell why are we even still looking at the blog. We/LA are out! End of story.

Here's what I just wrote for tomorrow ...

Hail and thunderstorm’s whipped through the Southland on Thursday, forcing the postponement of several CIF-Southern Section quarterfinal softball games.
San Dimas High School was on the road against San Jacinto High for its Div. V quarterfinal, but the game was halted in the seventh inning in a 0-0 game.
“It started pouring,” Saints coach Don Pollard said. “They delayed it and we tried to restart it, but we couldn’t get it in.”
When it resumes this afternoon, San Dimas has a runner on first with no outs in the top of the seventh.
“These girls are ready to come back here, it’s almost like they got something to prove now,” Pollard said. “When you get this close, you want to finish it. We’ll go back there (today) and see what happens.”
The Glendora High school softball team trailed Vista Murrieta 2-1 in the top of the second inning when it was postponed due to the rain.
Weather permitting, the two schools agreed to reschedule its Div. II quarterfinal this afternoon at Glendora at 3:15 p.m.
Because the game did not reach the fourth inning, they will start over instead of continuing in the second inning with Vista Murrieta leading.
“I guess you can say that’s sort of a break for us,” Glendora coach Reese Mitchell said. “Hopefully we can get it in tomorrow. If not, we’ll play on Saturday.”
Bishop Amat was scheduled to host its Div. III quarterfinal against Alemany, but that too was postponed until Saturday at Bishop Amat at 1 p.m.
“Our field doesn’t drain very well and with rain in the forecast on Friday, we felt it would be better to just schedule it for Saturday,” Lancers coach Walt Martin said.
South El Monte made the long trip to Calvary Murrieta for its Div. VI game only to learn it had to turn back and try again this afternoon. That game is also scheduled for 3:15 p.m.

Why is it that LA fans are knocking other softball teams in lower divisions because they are still in it. DLP is a terrific player but just because other players compete in lower divisions does not mean they have less heart or are less of team players or are less deserving of player of the year. They just live in a different school district. CIF decides what division schools play in and as I have said you play with the cards your dealt. Now why doesn't that pertain to la in football. Having said that, to, " WHAT ARE YOU BRAGGING ABOUT" why are you so proud of little d-4 or d-5 whatever divison you are in football championships because afterall they were won against "weak teams" that the local midget division pop warner team could beat.

WHAT ARE YOU BRAGGING ABOUT! said:

SAN DIMAS ADVANCES,
What are you so proud of over there at your DIVISION 5 area?? Please if it were anybody else in a higher division you would have gone home after the 1st game. I wouldn't brag so much about beating school's like Rim of the world(rim of the who?) Schurr and Ganesha,Pomona! Please all weak schools anybody could have don't great with those schools under there belt! Why are you throwing Patterson in the mix? What did Patterson do to you? Oh I forgot LA beat San Dimas! But it's not called Patterson high school it's called Los Altos High school. And no she isn't the whole team. She is a team player though unlike SD and NV!! And she would out shine all them DIVISION 5 pitchers any time. You guys all look like super stars over there in that Division!! Shoot my 12 year old can hit that pitch any time!!!

LA softball fan said:

San Dimas Fan advances,
Maybe Patterson should move to div.v instead, and play with you and your division v competion.......
Oh no its not about me and my pitches.... its about her and her team so she wouldnt fit with your team

Your right you did come out strong beating NV by 1 and SD by 4. But if they were to rematch you just never know. The last time SD played NV, SD won 7 to 1. 6 more runs compared to your 1. Oh and not in extra innings. MMMM just something to think about... You know, if everyone is so focused on Patterson not being able to do it all maybe she should try an individual sport, such as tennis or maybe golf. Then you LA fans have no one to blame but Patterson. Once again good luck to all the area teams that are still in!!!!

LA softball fan said:

SoftballFan,
Los Altos Beat Div.V Northview 3-2, and San Dimas 4-0. So yes we do know, and the 3 rbi's were all DLP including a 2 run homerun and tht winning run in extra innings all earned runs, so like I said we do know!
But your right about the HEART!! Teamwork and talent will only get you so far if your girls have No Heart your done!!.
DLP can only do so much and there is nobody with a BIGGER HEART for the game then her out there! She never quits, she loves the game and the competion. There is nobody out there with more humility then her either, you can read the Tribune for yourself and see how many of the young ladies think its about them(me, or my) and her its always has been about her team and how they are there for her especially her catcher who right along with DLP.
Good Luck with your game today!

It doesn't matter what league they're in..
The fact of the matter is that certain teams are still in and LA isn't. Every league have there Schurr's,Ganesha's, etc. But the further you get in the finals the harder the teams get. LA vs some of the better division V teams would be a good game and who knows who would win... Bottom line some teams have talent and some teams have HEART,TALENT and TEAM WORK! Heart, talent and team work go furter!!!! GO to all the area teams that are still in! You deserve to be there.

FredJ said:

Joe, you can make the same argument for Bishop Amat football every year. Don't they have a much tougher road to the title every year than Los Altos? Heck, McDonough won the MVP a few years back, would he have won at Amat? It's about rewarding the player with the best season whose team accomplished the most, regardless of division. Having said that, these teams still playing have to do much more to convince me there season has been better than Los Altos. We're only in the quarters so like I said, it's still up for grabs.

Joe Conqueror said:

First of all, I would just like to say congrats to all the softball teams that are still in the playoffs. Good luck today!

On another note. Fred, you said player of the year is up for grabs. Why is that? Is it a individual award or a team award? Because if in fact it is a individual award then hands down, you know who deserves to win. And let me leave you with this thought. If LA was in the same division as the Valle Vista league and they got to play teams like Schurr in the 2nd round, how far would they go? I don't think you should punish DLP for being in a tough division.
