Western Conference semifinal
Tonight: Lakers at Utah, 6 p.m.
TV: ESPN, Ch. 9
Lakers lead series 2-0

I'm starting this Lakers game thread so you discuss each playoff game. I know this is what we focus on after preps. I see the Lakers flags. I know everyone's talking Lakers. I was at BJ's in WestCov the other night and the crowd was out in full force. I don't know if you're like me, but when the Lakers win, I can watch Sports Center center all night. I'm reading everything I can on the web. When they lose, is back to HBO. I don't even read a Lakers story until they play again. Of course, the Lakers are 6-0 in the postseason which is probably why I'm starting this thread so it better not be a curse. I have to go back to the 80s to remember a Western Conference playoff run that felt this easy. You know it won't stay like this. Even when the Lakers went 12-0 in the Western Conference finals in 2001, there were so many tight games until they blew away the Spurs in the conference finals. The Jazz won't go away quietly, and I can't stand when people tell me this series is over. 37-4! That's the Jazz's record at home. Of course, the Lakers own one of those victories and it came without Pau Gasol, so I'm feeling good it, until tip-off that is.

Thanks for making my point. Couldn't have said it better myself.

You are pretty smart after all. Either way Chris Paul was sick last night! Never seen Tony arker distroyed like that before. CP3 is unbelieveable!

Time for the Lakers to pick up one more player in the next couple of years after D. Fish is moved on to the Front Office...Kobe, CP3, Odom, Bynum ..wow!

I freely admit Kobe could have won MVP any of the last 7-8 yrs. I'm not arguing that point at all. Unfortunately for your argument, once again you're talking about something that is completely irrelevant. This award is supposed to be about this year and this year only! That's all that matters. Talks about anything else only fuels the "Lifetime Achievement Award" theory.

All the evidence I produced was simply to support my question about what it takes to win NBA MVP. The criteria changes every year to give it to whoever the NBA finds is the most glamorous option. It's just a popularity contest. People liked watching Kobe more than anyone else so they voted for him. That makes perfect sense and voters are completely entitled to their opinion.

If he's the MVP because he's your guy, then so be it. Just don't blow smoke saying he deserves it for various reasons that just so happen to be false.

This award has significantly lost meaning over the years. With so many veteran teams caring less about the regular season (Spurs of late, 2000-04 Lakers), why does a regular season MVP award still exist?

PS- Please refer to stats for Kareem and Magic, then consult your basic math book before making silly comparisions.

what do you all think of a laker thread after playoff games?

Posted by: fredj | May 8, 2008 1:23 PM

Kobe is Better then any player in the NBA. As they say he is always in attack mode or getting the ball to the open man when he gets doubled. Tough to defend him one on one and he carries that that double edge sword,, take me one on one I burn you. double me and my cast of players around me destroys you. Kobe will go up in the rafters at Staples as the Best Laker ever. Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Baylor, Goodrich, West even Mikkan could never do what Kobes does. Kobe would have schooled Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. The only one that comes the closest to Kobe is Jordan. Other then that he is the best ever. After next year tho when Mark Cuban give him a part of the team like Buss did for Magic giving 5% of the Lakers, Kobe will be in Dallas as a player owner. Hey Buss you have another 5% to keep the best player ever?

Posted by: "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE JEWELRY" | May 8, 2008 1:02 PM

Funny but everytime I hear Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley comment they seem to think Kobe is unstoppable and the greatest player on the planet. I guess they are wrong.

Most Valuable means just e?that...Most Value...to the team, to the league and to the fans,

Kobe in your mind could NEVER win this award. But after 12 years I'm sure you coud surprise me and tell me a year maybe Kobe should have won the award? Maybe once? thereby making you smarter than everone else. Please.

See in your mind that's the point, and that's always going to be the point---KOBE DOESN'T DESERVE THE AWARD.

SO IF NOT NOW , WHEN? Does he have to average 81 a game, lead the league in steals, assists and rebounds to win.deserve the award?

Kobe's value is his overall impact on the game. The doubles that free up others, the key block, key rebound, his ability to put other players in foul trouble, his ability to play he point in crunch and ultimately to HIT the bg shot when it counts. Not to mention CARRY TIME by is sheer will to win. Kobe is the man this year, No futher evidence is there than the Boston Celtic fans, of all people, cheering MVP like sooooo many other fans have in other "hostile" cities. The people have spoken, the fans have spoken, the writers have spoken , the players have spoken and now the retired greats have spoken----Kobe Bryant 2008 NBA MVP.

Too bad they didn't ask you first. By the way where should we start looking for Jimmy Hoffa?

Kobe is no Force, who is clearly the best sports performer of our time, or any other time as well. The record speaks for itself

Posted by: Steve Ramirez | May 7, 2008 11:51 PM

This is a regular season award so your argument about the Celts underachieving thus far is irrelevant. If you take the playoffs into consideration, CP3 is your winner. Eliminated the Mavs and now two up on the dynastic Spurs? He'd be your hands down MVP if that was even remotely relevant.

KG was merely introduced to show how the criteria changes every year because if the rules were the same as years past, he would have won it. KG came in 4th in my opinion.

Chris Paul beat Kobe in the following categories: Assts, Steals, Double-Doubles, FG%, FT%, steals and had fewer turnovers.

As for Lebron, he beat Kobe in Pts, Assts, Rebs, Dub-Dubs and they tied in steals.

You can't bring up stats to prove why Kobe deserved to win in 2005-06 unless you also concede that CP3 or Lebron should have won it this year.

Since stats aren't the deciding factor and neither is being the best player on the best team, what is this about?

Kobe Bryant is one of the top 3 entertainers in the game. He'll elevate and knock down jumpers with 2 people in his face, 1 on his back, and another biting him in the ankle. Unfortunately, that's not the basis for crowning an MVP. He has a will to win? That's your argument? If we voted for will, then you give it to KG.

I could do this all night as I kill time before the game starts but let me leave you with this: If it was true and deserved, why is it that no two people can nail down why it happened? Why is it the reasons people come up with are easily dismissed as false?

The voters must be on the BCS system for MVP voting. Kobe's high seed must've pushed him over the top of all the players that played better than he did.

(Whew, made it through without mentioning his divisive "leadership style" ... d'oh!)

In the Know, the Lakers had the best record in the Western Conference when Andrew Bynum got hurt, they lost it, then regained it after acquiring Gasol. That's because they have the greatest player in the world in Kobe Bryant, just ask LeBron James and Chris Paul, who will tell you the same thing. I'll buy your LeBron argument if you'll say Kobe should have won the MVP over Nash when he averaged 35 points a game and threw down 81 on Toronto.
If Kobe's not the defensive machine you say he is, then why did everyone on the Olympic team say he was their best defender? Why does he keep getting applauded by other coaches about his defense? Why did Okufur today say Kobe's defense was bothersome? Hey, don't care, but here's what I think people don't get.
Kobe didn't make his teammates better, they got better, so the team got better.
Kobe has played the same way he always has. He led their team in assists and deferred to Shaq all three championship years.
The Lakers are winning because this is what happens when you pass and knock down shots. This is what happens when you can go to Bynum and Gasol instead of Kwame Brown. When you have Fish instead of Smush. When a team of young players start to mature. Add Kobe Bryant, now you've got a winning mix.

In The Know. I was wrong. You are right, Thank you for the education.

KG...almost lost to the 8th seeded team. 'nuff said! Besides on that team Paull Pierce is really the leader and always will be...the others are "never get there mercenaries that will bouce around in search of TEAM. Paull Pierce n the other hand will ALWAYS WEAR CLETIC GREEN,,,until they hang that 34 from the rafters!

LeBron...see above. Although in my humble opinion "might" someday be the greatest player EVER! But then again even he mentions how, "Kobe is the greatest player in the league and the best player in the world for the last couple of years." Thtas after he said, "Kobe is a killer, He just takes your will away and has that something I'm still looking for. The intangible will to WIN" Boy is he a moron as well?

Chris Paul...outstanding. Shoulda, coulda...WILL win the award but maybe like the battle between Magic and Bird...one wins the Championship MVP and the other the League MVP.

All the other talk is just my opinion. But thanks for worrying about me. Enjoy life my friend, as you see, it's way too short to pick fights. But IF you insist on making this blog about you then I'll pass.

Okay where were we...oh yeah...you're right. Thanks for the information. Never would have looked at it that way. Thanks for the tip.

Feel better?

You're Awesome

According to Laker fan, having better teammates this year proves how great Kobe is. Actually, having better teammates does exactly the opposite. It shows how his desire and attempts to do it alone have failed miserably. Btw, take it easy with the marks. You're going to hurt yourself.

Kobe only lead in two categories this year: technical fouls and ejections. Lebron averaged more points, rebounds, and assists, which used to be part of the criteria for giving such an award. KG was the best player on the best team in the league, which was used last year to award Dirk Nowitski. Chris Paul produced better stats, a higher efficiency rating, and had a lot less to work with. Kobe had the same FG% as Allen Iverson and had fewer double-doubles than a list of players. He isn't even the defensive machine everyone's claiming. Derek Fisher guards the opposing point guard, not Kobe.

Before Pau Gasol arrived, the Lakers bounced from 2nd to 4th over and over again. With Pau, they went 22-5. In the 11 games where Pau was hurt, they went a pedestrian 6-5. As we know, .545 doesn't make the playoffs in the West this year.

Now that these FACTS refute any arguments about his dominance, consistency, and overall team influence, the only items you have left are his leadership (see off-season drama) and the intangibles. I like how the criteria changes whenever you need to justify something illogical.

Was Fred in charge of this award too? I thought he was the only hack that gave out awards based on fabricated facts.

Kobe had it RIGHT ALL ALONG! Gone are the days of Chucky Atkins (where is he???) and of Smush Parker (where is he???) and all the attitude they dumped on Kobe for not being a "team player". Where are they now?? Kobe CARRIED them and now they are no wher to be found yet when they played along side Kobe they were complaining about shots and touches, incredible!

Same goes for Brian Cook, Kareem Rush and others who played along side Kobe ond enjoyed being a Laker too much and NEVER GOT BETTER!
And where are they now???

Well look at Sasha, Odom, Bynum and Radmonovic. (Where are they now?) On the 1st place team in the Western Conference, playing in the SECOND round and favored to win the NBA CHAMPONSHIP!!! Thats where!

If every player and fan took into consideration the time, effort and will Kobe has shown over the past 12 years then NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE WOULD QUESTION THE VALUE OF HIS OUT BURST THIS SUMMER!

Imagine the greatest player of his generation, arguably, winning only 1 MVP after 12 years?

Congratualations Kobe! You belong right up their with all the Laker greats...MAGIC, WEST, KAREEM, WILT, ELGIN, WORTHY nd someday when SHAQ apologizes mabe him too but I doubt it...all the others finished their careers as Lakers,

Long live Dr. Buss. The best owner in professional sports!!!! EVER!!!!!

GO LAKERS!!!!!

Remember, last year. when Kobe hammered his team mates, stepped on Kupchak's balls and wanted out of LA? How convenient, today he's a friggin hero. How time forgives everything!

MVP jinx, 1-1, then Lakers win next three.

Sentimentally, I'm rooting for another sweep.

Posted by: Jake The Alaskan | May 7, 2008 3:05 AM

No way, Lakes don't lose on Wednesday when Kobe gets MVP, then they win one out of two in Utah and close it out in Game 5.
