Baseball: Miramonte 3-0; Valle Vista 2-1

| | Comments (131) |

Friday's first round results
Division II

Santa Barbara 16, Damien 2 -- Spartans go down, and go down bigtime.
Division IV
Northview 8, Beverly Hills 2 -- Top-ranked Vikings did what they're supposed to do.
Diamond Ranch 3, Santa Monica 2 -- Okay, this sets up a game against San Dimas.
San Dimas 8, Granite Hills 2 -- I know this is so cliche, but the Saints go marching on.
Charter Oak 8, Victor Valley 1 -- Defending champs take care of business.
Cathedral City 8, Covina 5 -- Who would have thought they could score 5 and lose.

SHILLS, BONITA, AZUSA, AMAT WIN

Huskies celebrate Christian Ibarra's grand slam.
"When you face Loyola (last season), who goes on to win it, and face Paramount (two years ago), who is the No. 4 seed and goes to the semifinals, we've just haven't had great draws," South Hills coach Kevin Smith said. "But part of that has been our own fault. We felt pretty good about (Glenn). They played hard, they never gave up, never quit. But it's a playoff win, and we're really happy about it.

First round observations: We had a vote on how the Montview League teams would do and 39 percent said they would go 0-4 and only 22 percent said 2-2. With La Puente and Azusa winning the latter is true which is great for the league's respect. I hope we get more Montview bloggers because La Puente-Bishop Amat is going to be fun. Seriously, are the Lancers vulnerable. How do they barely squeak by Calvary something? Also, have to give it up for South Hills. I've been kind of hard on them because of their cupcake schedule, but if they keep this going in the playoffs, they've got my respect. It would be great to see the Hills win again when it matters. Then there's Bonita, who's looks great every time I see them, but Mali-who had a lot to do with it. I was sitting with Bearcats fans who think I'm in love with the Valle Vista. Yes, they're reading the blogs in La Verne, and love the fun-spirited trash talk. But as well as Bonita played, I had to explain the Valle Vista teams will go further than the Miramonte three. Why? Pitching, pitching, pitching.

Division III
South Hills 5, Glenn 1 -- Derek Klena threw a three-hitter and Ibarra hit a slam.
Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 13, Nogales 3 -- Nobles get pounded in the first round.
Paramount 7, Rowland 0 -- Hey, 1-1 in the postseason isn't so bad.
Division IV
Bonita 7, Malibu 0 -- Not impressed with Mali-who? This was easy from start to finish.
Division V
Bishop Amat 3, Downey Calvary Chapel 0 -- And I thought this would be 15 or 16-0.
Monrovia 9, Sierra Vista 5 -- Not a bad result considering Cats are No. 2 seed.
La Puente 9, Ontario Christian 2 -- Wow, the battle for La Puente is on, Amat next!
Sultana 6, Duarte 1 -- Falcons bats failed them again. What else is new?
Azusa 8, Aquinas 5 -- Mark it down, that's one for the Montview league champs.
Mary Star 8, Arroyo 4 -- With Gabrielino losing, Mission Valley league 0-for-3.
Hesperia 9, South El Monte 1 -- Those Desert teams will do this to you.
Paraclete 5, Western Christian 2 -- Still a great season for Christian league champs.

Tuesday's Second Round
Division III
Don Lugo at South Hills, 3:15 p.m.
Division V
La Puente at Bishop Amat, 3:15 p.m.
St. Paul at Azusa, 3:15 p.m.
Monrovia at Paraclete, 3:15 p.m.

Serious,
Wait!! So what you are saying is that if someone makes a statement that has no merit and is proven so, that it is not a debate, but is just a baseball blog. Don't kid yourself this baseball blog is a debate and JA makes this very clear. Say all you want about Amat playing and having an unfair advantage in D5, but again it does not seem to have and adverse affect on all the scouts at our games.

The person talking about OC baseball is BASEBALL RUT, not to be confused with me the original and one of a kind, BASEBALL NUT. I think the sgv is as good or better than their snooty oc conterparts. And pleae dont try to steal my moniker or credibilty. I posted a preseason top ten that was on the mark and fred thought so much of it he used it on his blog. So dont anybody think that I wrote that crap. One last thought I watched the cat city vs. covina game and I dont think CCity is a bad team, quite the contrary they remind me of SD. They did not do it with mirrors or bad defense by the colts. Pill got hit like he does against good teams, and did not do anything at the plate. I am a BIG, longtime fan of tyler but I am serious about what I write and my credibiltiy is at stake. V valuenzala way to jump all over that SWEET first pitch, s wilson clutch hit, all you seniors graduating in the words of the illustrious bob hope, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES, Of beating NV at their own place last year, denying SD an outright title on the last game of the regular season, the come from behind tie against the might los osos grizzlies, c waturbury the mighty 3 run blast against the vikes, etc. etc. I could go on and on but the first round losses could be chalked up to a tough league. But we would have had to play those teams anyway. Good luck to all remaining teams left in the playoffs. Also cat city will beat Charter Oak on tuesday. Take it to the bank. I have only made two predictions this season, my first was northview over bishop amat and we saw how that one turned out, RIGHT FRED?

Reality--You are easily influenced. Do you think MOST of us have the time or desire to ramble on like JA?? Really, do you think anyone reads all that and checks fact?? If I wanted I could go on and on about South Hills, but I know most don't care and bottom line, good or bad - let the team do the talking. Amat will never admit how much of an advantage they have with their LEGAL recruiting -and do no even bring up the issue with Freshman transfers, it is NOT the same scenario and never will be. I think our biggest gripe is that although it is not Amat's fault and we all get that, THEY have an unbelievably easy schedule and especially in the play-offs. MAYBE Joe amat should be more informed why some schools weren't able to get into that tournament instead of just assuming AMAT was the chosen few. Pure arrogance and ignorance as well, but most won't waste their time trying to explain. It is just such a waste of his time to bore us all with idle rambling. So REALITY - don't be so easily influenced, the arguments are not nearly as poignant as you seem to think.

come on reality, get real said:

IT's a damn baseball blog, not a debate class.. If most had the time or desire we would fight the fight, but really WHO reads all that crap and WHO cares that much? It really is simple, AMAT does NOT play in a tough enough league to BRAG about as much as they do. The football team in DIV 1 - now they can talk the talk and walk the walk... PLUS, the biggest issue, NO WAY, NO HOW, Amat who can get players from all over the place and recruit should be in a DIV5, is there fault -- NO of course not. AND do not bring up freshman year eligibility to go anywhere - NOT nearly the same thing. It happens everything, of course, we get that but if you even knew what a high school has to go through to get these "transfer" players...still not as simple as you think and that is something AMAT will NEVER understand or have to deal with and please don't waste all that gray space going over the rules. WE GET IT.

It's not even about stats-it's about putting together an argument. Joe Amat said:

Teabag,

I'm glad you found the rankings comparison "a joke"and thought of it as "comical"

It was a response to "check this" who seemed to feel that it was relevant. Wrong game to play... unless you want to. Sorry that I do read the Trib and remember things, like LP beating Rowland or Rowland beating Colony ( that was last week - not too tough!) With your "dial-up" internet connection it may be tough to find where"check this" got the rankings.

If you had taken the time to read it, or had the capacity to comprehend it, you would see that nowhere did I say anything about Amat being "great", outside of stating the #12 ranking that was previously referenced. Quite the contrary, in fact, I suggested taht there are others in the bracket that could, in fact, beat Amat - if the Lancers don't show up and play well.

Of course I did say that at the end of the season, "check this" could redo his ranking thing and find out who played the toughest 30+ game schedule (non-league,league, and playoffs) But we'll wait for him to do that. Not making anyone look good - just an opportunity for him to restate facts.

Joe Amat, I want to ask if you are for real, but unfortunately, you are and us fellow readers have to accept that. You are so bitter it's comical. Your stupid rankings are a joke like you and Div. 5. You take things so personal and my god, when you lay down for the final time and look up at the ceiling, god help you when you think back and see that you actually spent time finding out Rowland beat Colony who beat La Puente or whatever your point was. Man, you will figure out every statistic to make Amat look good. Dude get a fricken life. You treat Amat like it's your mother or child...it's just a school, a school that will go on without you. Don't you understand how moronic you sound with your dumb stats. Sorry, but I know you saw the voting...more people like Northview as fans and think they're better too. Once again, only stat that matters, Northview 4 Amat 1. Good luck in the La Puente Cup!

joe amat big beer belly? said:

hey joe are you going to be one of the big bellied beer drinking amat fans at the la puente game?

Joe Amat said:

You asked.

The fact of the matter is that in the first round league champs are going to play 2nd or 3rd place teams in the first couple of rounds. Some games "sound" easier because of the "name" that you read and the perception of that school.

Since you wanted to talk rankings, Northview just beat the #484 ranked team and San Dimas knocked off the #586 ranked team.
South Hills finally got a playoff win vs the #443 team and Bonita beat #396 Malibu, while #284 Charter Oak was able to get by the #841st ranked team. Do you STILL want to talk rankings?

Of course it would "sound" better if #12 in the State Amat was in Division III playoffs and played a team like Rowland... wait- La Puente beat Rowland... or possibly Colony...no, Rowland beat them... maybe it could be like South Hills and play a tough one like #170 Don Lugo.... oh, no - Colony beat Lugo. And you mention #199 Temple City - they beat South Hills. But maybe we shouldn't use #188 South Hills as a measuring stick.. they lost to Alemany - and #237 Bishop Montgomery swept them in a doubleheader. But that could be expected - Montgomery also beat #28 Palos Verdes. But Amat's already beaten Montgomery 3 times. Covina has one of the best players around and they're ranked #161 - behind #146 St Paul - in D5. St Paul is slightly behind #121 San Dimas, but SP does have a win over #87 Westlake, #. Do rankings STILL matter? Who is your teams *best* win? Then look up their ranking and tell me. We'll compare!

You have to play the games - and lower ranked teams CAN WIN! Especially in baseball. And I can GUARANTEE that when it is all said and done and you take the entire 30+ games you can do your little ranking thing and Amat will have played the toughest schedule in the SGV. Not bad for a little no-good, living-in-the-past, overrated, D5 team from the barrio.

So , no, it's not "freakin' embarrassing" to be in the second round of the playoffs - no matter who they place in front of us. What *would* be embarrassing is if we *chose* to play someone like a Duarte (who La Puente swept) in a tournament that we hosted and had a chance to *select* our opponents.

Nobody any good would CHOOSE to do that - would they? Especially if you were the #37 ranked team in the State. Now THAT would be embarrassing!

Here one better.

The teams Amat could face in their bracket is:

La Puente ranked 470
San Marino 353
Camp Hall 258
Temple City 199
Carpinteria 649
Bishop Mont 237
Sultana 372

No offense to these teams but they should be pissed. Amat just is a joke and plays nobody in parity for the quest of a CIF ring. Oh by the way the bottom bracket rankings are worst..

Just pathetic

Big deal. You just described one pitcher
he doesn't make the team does he, he's just one player. On any given day, the SGV will beat your teams and vice versa. Whats the big deal. The SGV touts quite a few great pitchers. I really don't think and many will agree that just because you throw the 98 mph that you are a winnter. He could be wild as hell, who knows - we sure don't nor do we care.
Let the big leagues pick him up and nuff said. WOW, big deal.

No one has ever seen a 98 mph Slider because the pros dont even throw em maybe a cutter but if you throw that hard (98 mph fastball) your slider should be 92-88! Now tell me im wrong and a kid throws 98 mph slider then what is his fastball at 102 hahaha

1.OLU, was an example!
2.Can you say: 6'5 200lbs
or 6'3 200 lbs. throwing 98mph in High School. It's not just one kid there's several throwing that speed with very very low ERA's.
3.A scout will find a great player anywhere! there looking for projectablity! If, the boy is 5'9 throwing his hardest at 88mph...He's maxed out!6'5, 200lbs, room to fill out that big body and add more velocity to the ball that's what there looking for.
4.If you, don't want to be honest about the talent in the O.C. that's okay! Ask a scout! parents can call a scout they will come out and look......If the kid doesn't have the factors the scout will walk, and walk fast! It doesn't matter how much the parents push or the budget they wont sign a kid without the key factors!
5. Your proud of your SGV baseball, that's good! but, know the facts!
6.None of the schools you listed below has EVER seen a 98mph slider right? It would be hard to hit huh? I'm not taking anything away from the SGV, but know your role!

WOW JUST READ THE OC VS SGV TALK…..

Ok the oc does have some awesome pitchers aka: o lu cole, gates, mauer, but just because they get a d1 deals does not mean that a great high school pitcher can not beat ya.

1. Northview, Bonita, San dimas, Charter Oak, Amat, all can beat any one of the OC on any given day. Why , because those kids can flat out compete and we do have some awesome coaching even on tighter budgets.

2. O lu and the D1 schools are very tough with their dominant pitching but our valley teams can compete with any of them. After their pitching O LU has two very good hitters and a lot of good hitters, but doesn’t that sound like any of our valley schools as well?

3. Pill, Ponzo, Elias, Andrade, Plowman, Calderado, Northrup, Garkow, Janclaes, any day those kids can beat ya.

4. And I second the motion that our players should get more looks, but the coaches, parents and players have to sell themselves, that is something that the OC does all to well.

Dranch and santa monica played a great game, Dranch down the whole game on santa monicas home field, 1-0 then 2-0 then 2-1. Then the top of 6th, Kyle Lengyel leads off with hard grounder to second that is misplayed, then joel licon hits a grounder down third for a double, so 2nd and third 0 out , lanuza strikes out against the lefty, then with 1 out Derek Goodwin goes to 2-2 and hits line drive down right field line to score lengyel to tie the game, Licon was held up at third by the coach, Going into top of 7th, jesse Gonzales lead off walk, mike vinnitsky sac bunt with 2 strikes, almost safe at first, nick greene intentionally walked, then senior Jericho Kelsey hits bomb to right center to score jesse and greene held at third. Gus lanyuza gets the win in relief of nick greene who pitched his best game of the year.

Big Amat#1, I was just stating that Bishop Amat, are League Champs, and not the swordsmen! That's all, nothing insulting to Bishop.

Bishop Amat put the SGV on the map,so to speak.

It just hit me,the swordsmen are your rivials, and got you a little jumpy AMAT#1.

Well Amat#1, Since La Puente is in the Montview League, and they swept Duarte at the end of the season, giving the AZTEC'S the MONTVIEW LEAGUUE.

I'm going to have to go with La Puente to win! Come on give the little guy a chance!

Just like Fred called it, it is going to be an all Del Rey final.

FredJ said:

would you all stop with the beer drinking comments, why do you have to show your low level of class with these cheap shots. And if you're from L.P. or Bishop Amat, just laugh at these fools and have more class than they do. I leave these comments up because well, these people live among you. Kind of scary isn't it?

Bring in that Clydesdale Budweiser truck into Amat along with the metal detector devices. This is for the Barrio Trophy. Rich Dads vs Poor Dads. Raider T-shirt sales hit a all time high. While you at it set up a sideline tattoo parlor. ORALE'!

think beer sales will be at an all time high at that amat la puente game? The big beer bellied dads will be out in force. This buds for you. BURP

Aztec,

Is there a reason that you needed to bring Amat into your debate with a St. Paul fan? And are YOU sure that you want to do that?

Lot's of B.S. said:

"Heard" huh? come on, they have offers or they don't! easy question. The "O.C." guy doesn't know how the games are run in the SGV. It's the end of their senior year they have a deal or not. Just answer the question. If, you don't know don't answer with I heard. I heard=no offers.

By the way peewee you don't spell pee ons that way! Check your spell check,or take out your freakin dictionary!

League Champs! By the way can you say that? That's right, Bishop Amat won the Del Ray league! Lol...

AZUSA AZTECS!MONTVIEW LEAGUE CHAMPS!

bb---as a matter of fact they do & those two kids from NV will do just fine, thank you for asking. GOOD LUCK NV!!!! I want to wish Covina the best today as well... THE SGV IS WELL REPRESENTED.

Really a NV fan said:

go covinabaseballfan go.. Thank you for speaking up and on behalf of the FINE SGV players. Our kids do us proud and we are well represented. Good Luck Covina... except for head-head, we at NV (well most of us) wish you the best. Go get em Vikings!!

Sammy Sworsdman said:

Good luck to Azusa against St. Paul and La Puente against Amat.

You Montview league pee ons will need it.

covinabaseballfan said:

baseball fan - Anyone from the "SGV" knows who Mr. D is. You wouldn't know him, as his son isn't from the great "OC", although he played with "your" players this summer and fall as well. Players from Orange County used to be the majority of the kids that were scouted due to all of the travel ball they play. Gives them a lot more exposure - and that is the name of the game if you are a good player. The SGV is changing that and more and more players from this area are being recruited to D1 schools.

baseballfan said:

bb said:

Oh forget it! He acted like everyone should know who his kid is....That's why! I have no clue who he is or his kid. No insult just the truth. Have a great day bye!

FredJ said:

BTW, Covina has the tallest order today and if they win, I love their chances in the second round at home against Charter Oak, assuming the Chargers win too.

FredJ said:

BB, why would you ask who his kid is? What good can come from it?

bb said:

Covinabaseballfan, Who's your kid?

covinabaseballfan said:

Fred - You've got that one right! My kid doesn't read any of this stuff. Mostly parents on here bashing other players, or promoting their own. Sad, but true.

bb said:

Hey Fred, That was a honest question. I have never seen them play just your article. They seem legit, just asking a question.

FredJ said:

Sometimes I feel like that fan at a little league game watching two parents argue over nothing when the kids could care less.

bb said:

Do the two Senior pitchers from Northview have any offers?

FredJ said:

Yeah, but there's a difference between fun-spirited trash talk and that other stuff that goes on in here.

spectator said:

Come on Fred! Don't assume that...Just kidding! You do a good job stirring the emotions of these SGV guys! Very entertaining.

fredj said:

Stop with all this outing stuff, I'm assuming you're adults, so act like it.

baseballfan said:

Mr. D is outed? who are you outing?

Mr. D is outed said:

I won't be obvious, but it's time to out someone on here...Going to give him a chance to go quietly with a hint that we know who you are...how about a nickname for him...his name is Mr. De La Cubano and has a kid at a school with green as their main color. Enough with the insults Mr. De La Cubano on kids and local teams. I will out you more and give your post names that you use if it continues.

Hey reality, you need a REALITY check! Teams change from season to season! OLU was just an example! ANYBODY who knows baseball knows there is no comparision to EXAMPLE OLU and Los Al pitching these guys are going to D1 colleges! Come on.....Again another DUMB comment! You can love the SGV but, be real the talent is better in the O.C. and Covinabaseballfan, your sticking to your original comment? Be a COVINA fan but, get in reality!

covinabaseballfan said:

baseball fan - Yes, I have seen your players from the "OC". My son played with them throughout the summer and fall.

reality czech said:

baller-get off the OCs nuts. Last year Bishop Amat beat Olu in baseball. And they're in D5 and suck - remember. So Olu can't be that good

AZTEC PARENT said:

Good Job La Puente! Representing the Montview League! Goes to show you the Montview League can play Baseball in any league.

Big game against your cross town rival Bishop Amat! You can beat them! Hey by you guys sweeping Duarte at the end of the season, gave AZUSA THE LEAGUE TITLE!

Good Luck!

AZTEC PARENT said:

GOOD JOB AZUSA WINNING TODAY!

Trailing 4-0,in the 5th inning and coming back to win 8-5. You guys showed a lot of heart.

Who says a public school, can't beat a private Catholic School!

Good Luck against St. Paul!

Lots of good baseball around the SGV but props to BONITA too. 18-7 ain't bad and although Malibu is not St. Bonaventure, any CIF win is a good one. There are also a lot of good pitchers around but Nico Calderaro, who gave up only 4 runs in his 6 innings today, has also been worthy of mention here. And the Bearcats got Jason Plowman back today. Momentum is where you can gain it & hammering Malibu is a good way to get some.

Robert Murphree said:

Hey Fred way to go with the current scores!!

We're still waitng on Galetti to post for the Rio Hondo side.

i agree with baseball fan. OLU has 3 top pitchers who are committed to big time colleges. Also Los Alamitos has 3 top pitchers. Yes maybe best pitching staff in the sgv for a while, but not in any league in so cal

baseball fan said:

Covinabaseballfan, Come on buddy! Have you ever watch some top notch players and teams from orange county? I'm embrassed for you man! BIG differnce between OLU, and ANY SGV team! nothing wrong with being loyal to the SGV, but come on what a dumb comment!
