Bishop Breakdown
This fall we'll post a Bishop Breakdown thread on Monday's to evaluate Friday night's games, the players, coaching staff's, and the next opponent.

With the coaching staff in place, this feels like a make or break year at Bishop Amat. It's probably not fair to expect too much from Steve Hagerty and staff in their first season, but there's nothing like the excitement and emotions of a quick turnaround. Whatever happens, week-by-week, we'll follow the ride.

Comments
NO, Gilmore is not at Amat nor will he be showing up, he is sticking it out at Wilson like a dedicated player should.

Well as a Lancer backer I can see where Fred wanted to do a Amat week by week progress report. There is allot of intrested people wondering how the Lancers will do under Head Coach Hagerty and with a ex-head coach of Amat Difiori and McCutchen as D-Coordinator, amongst other solid coaches he has picked up along the way. With the Verti 2 year debacle behind us this is the year the Lancers have no excuses. So the thread would be as they win this blog gets so many pro-Amat hits and if it should continue the downslide as some predict then the Anti-Amat get to come in and rip the Amat program and everyone who backs it. It is a good concept Fred the Hatfields and McCoy's going at it over Amats progress or lack of. If Fred wants to change it up and spread it to a week to week different school, then thats not a problem, we all want our respective schools to do well and be written about. I think So. Hills has a good group coming back and will be a force in their division and thru the playoffs, barring no injuries, in the case for Amat we are just waiting and hoping Hagerty is genius and starts to win more games and brings that winning swagger back to Amat something we lacked under Verti.

Hey Lancer, I am not angered at all what so ever, but 2 just cover 1 school all season long 2 me when there are so many other teams in the SGV that deserve the kind of publicity that Amat would be getting sounds pretty ridiculous.. I have no preference in what school Fred should cover as i clearly stated that why not just randomly choose a school every week?? I don't know how much more clearer that statement can be???

k i have no problem with amat, i think their sports programs are run poorly but thats ones opinion. they have great players and the football team should not be bashed on becuz of one crappy coaching staff. and to answer ur question lancer 1775 how bout alternating the teams that are brokenkdown i mean we have Charter Oak, Bishop Amat and South Hills. all 3 schools have been major powerhouses for years it would be pretty fun to see how each team is progressing!

You sound very angry SiNToWnGiAnT54? What SCHOOL would YOU like him to cover?

Posted by: CURIOUS | June 26, 2008 2:33 PM
Oh yeah, maybe I should randomly pick games of the week on Friday to cover. That's a way to keep it fair.
Posted by: FredJ | June 26, 2008 9:23 AM
Fred are you serious?? a breakdown about Amat's games, the players, coaching staff's, and the next opponent?? Seriously get off their nutts already!!! So they come on these boards and post alot, who f***in cares!! I have absolutely nothing against the so called arogant Amat fans but come on seriously 2 give only 1 school so much attention that's not even producing W's & more than likely won't be anytime soon is just a slap in the face 2 all the other great SGV schools that are and have been winning/dominating... How about you just randomly pick a school every week??

Kylie Price from AMAT is the only freshman to make the Trib's all area track team. Is she related to Price on the football team. There is also an Ibrahim who made the second team is she sister to Ibrahim on the football team? It is great to see these girls hold their own in sports. It would be interesting to see a story on sibblings who excel.

You all need to get a job! First you throw blows vs the area schools and now youre throwing blows vs each other. Don't you all have to be at a 12 Step meeting right now anyway? Isn't it time to start walking to the bus stop?

The call came in late and it was in the 4th overtime against one of the best recievers in the state Andy Stankowitz. You can't blame him for that game.
Posted by: Kingside | June 25, 2008 2:49 PM
Alcantara was All SGV along with Prescott their senior year and probably comprised the biggest D backfield Amat may have had. I don't remember grades being the reason, but I believe he went to SAC and then on to SJSU as stated. He played quarterback until his senior year when they played Bummmy Garcia at QB as they ran an option which Bummmy was better suited to run.
Alcantara and Prescott are probably off most peoples radar, but were one of the better D backfield pairs in Amat history. They were both about 6'2 or 6'3 and could hit!!!
Posted by: Kingside | June 25, 2008 2:46 PM
Oh I remember wasn't he the one called for pass intereference in the end zone to lose that game against St. Paul.

To What,
According to the Bishop Amat 50 Year Celebration Commemorative Book in their office Alcantara was an outstanding offensive and defensive player in the 80s and, like Pierson, graduated from San Jose State.

Hay What?
You kind of gave yourself away. All the players you mentioned have one thing in common except for one player. They all played college and some pro. If this was the SAT the question would read something like this:
What name doesn't belong?
a. Randy Tanner (USC)
b. John Jackson (USC)
c. Ralph Brown (Nebraska)
d. Pernell Taylor (Notre Dame)
e. Abel Montanez (USC)
f. Kory Minor (Notre Dame)
g. Mike Lange (Santa Clara)
h. Adam Simon (UCLA/San Diego St.)
i. David Pierson (San Jose St.)
j. Alcantara (???)

I thought this was a football thread. Why all the bashing on Nieto. Didn't he just win two titles running his offense. St. Paul had good players but no plan. As far as letting players play multiple sports. There are 4 players who play varsity for both sports: McClanahan, Anderson, Carrillo, and Traxler. Coach is totally supportive of them. If you did your research you would find that he totally supported Lenhart's decision to give up baseball this season to learn the new playbook. No need to divide the two programs. If you are an Amat fan you should hope baseball and football both do well at Amat. Keep up the great work Skip.

Wow, you're getting closer to the truth about this guy.
Maybe someone should really investigate his past at USC about Bush Jerseys.
Hey Coach, backed up to the store lately? Have any more to sell?

Amat Forever,
Unfortunately your statement, “you cannot even put him and Nieto in same category. Coach K was loved and still so close to many of his players” is very true and an often repeated statement. Unfortunately, saying that Amat’s present varsity baseball coach is u n l o v e d by m a n y is a gross understatement. Not only is he unloved but he is n o t respected by his very players and some of his very own coaches. This statement sadly holds true for the baseball parents and faculty at Amat as well. It is a real, real shame. Sometimes Amat does get some bad apples and, perhaps, Nieto is one of them. I believe that the following two to three years will be substantial in proving or disproving this. Apparently though Nieto was a politician in a previous lifetime and is still very talented in the craft of … lying. This has many incoming and new Amat families very pleased and approving of him. His lies and promises will buy him little time. I know that he is an avid reader of this blog and I hope that he takes these comments to heart. Usually, coach, “where’s there’s smoke there’s fire”. Maybe he should stop taking the time to read this blog and concentrate more on his coaching skills and on his players. There’s also that “Big Guy” on the staff over there at Amat and at all religious and non religious schools, good ol’ J.C. . I bet if he stopped and talked and listened to Him more he might acquire the skills necessary to be a well respected, loved and effective coach.

amat is going to continue going down. 2 and 8 this year
Posted by: 2 and 8 | June 24, 2008 10:51 PM
Amat will have a good year....Thats all im going to say... they have good players...offesively, Ibrahim is going to be a great receiver with great feet nd hands. gaisie in the backfield. bowens nd tierney trading off at tight end, nd u still got McClanahn, and Lenhart. Teter, creager, and loera leading the o line......Defensively,on the line Kane. linebackers which are probably the best in the valley Maffie, Prieto, and Seals. DB's Price, Johnson, and Gener. they have a great coaching staffing and hopefully could do much with it. they have the talent nd the ablility. I hope they have a good summer, work hard, and it will pay off. Leave it all on the field and everyone could come back on friday nights post more blogs, it just depends on how they play determing what people will say. Good luck to all Valley teams, and have a great summer/year

Valleyfan, not sure your statement is accurate. Try asking those closer to the situation and it is a fact that some coaches (will remain namesless) are not supportive of 2-sport playing athletes. Please, I played for Coach K and in my opinion - you cannot even put him and Nieto in same category. Coach K was loved and still so close to many of his players. He was one of those special coaches and they are rare. From what I hear - and I consider my close to the subject - Nieto is not even close and seriously not liked by many. Too many issues from what I hear.

Jay Anderson chose not to play football on his own. He hurt his shoulder badly the last football game of the season and it has yet to heal completely. Hagerty and Nieto are just fine with guys playing both sports. I do believe Hagerty was a baseball coach in the past.
Coach K was a good coach but lets not lose sight he inherited a great group of players when he got there. Simon, Lange, Peirson and ect. were Juniors when Coach K took over. Those guys were winning for many years before the came to Amat. They did win two CIF title and national titles while playing the lowly Div. 4

Don,
Nasty old orange county? Usually you make sense but that comment was was off base. When comparing OC to the SGV the OC is 10 times better than almost any area with the exception of the hills of Glendora or La Verne
As for your incorrect assumption that few know about the game isn't relevant to the anti amat senitment. Most of us anti amaters ( is that even a word?) lol are sick of hearing amat this and amat that when there are plenty of other teams to talk about.
You are right about the arrogance of other schools but the amat crap here gets old. I have been to Long Beach Poly and that area is bad as well as parts of Santa Ana and neither of those areas will ever win a safe city award. But its very comical to say the least to hear these Amat people try in vain to defend La Puente. I liked the stat that said that area had 3 times the national average for crime. Thats all that needs to be said
Posted by: My Take | June 24, 2008 11:30 AM
Too Bad if Nieto pushed that card...
Must be feeling a little nervous with him having to field a team next season of "HIS" guys... No longer riding the coattails of Coach K's players.
What has made Amat, "AMAT" is that players WERE allowed to play more than one sport.
This goes back to the 80's with players like the Brown bros, Pernell Taylor, Alcantara.
What about Randy Tanner, John Jackson?? They played and made All-CIF in both Football AND Baseball!!!
That was never a problem back then... Even more recently, Abel Montanez, Kory Minor etc.... (maybe not sooo recently..)
Others included, Mike Lange, Adam Simon, Dave Pierson etc...
Where is the AD in all this mess???
This is the person who needs to step in and stop that.. I tell you, Coach Hagerty WILL NOT PUT UP with Neito's antics!!
A change is definitely necessary at the AD level until then, there will NEVER be a "Fresh" start at Amat!!
Posted by: What? | June 24, 2008 11:26 AM
I wonder if the same holds for McClanahan? He is Sophmore with so much potential on the football and field and I understand the back up QB. He also is a big target as a catcher. I do not see the reason why they cannot play both?
Posted by: Robbing peter to pay paul? | June 24, 2008 10:52 AM
Rumor is that Last years Stud freshman Runningback Jay Anderson , who also played Varsity Baseball , was told by coach Neito to choose between football or baseball and the kid choose baseball.. If so thats really unfortunate , the kid was a stud football player and probably would have really contributed on varsity this year...

Darian Johnson is not only a good DB he also is a decent running back. He carried us in our last game vs Loyola and was pretty decent in the second half against Notre Dame. He is a Junior this year and has another year remaining. The talk of Price and Johnson is all good and they will be fun to watch against a passing team, first game against Los Osos a passing team, we will see. Amat has some returners that do not get mentioned guys like Maffie, Gener, Teter, Seals, McClanahan, Creager, Lenhart, Deshawn Gaise, adding Prieto, Bowens, Cane and some additions from last years JV squad and that is allot of talent to work with. Question mark is the line. When that comes into focus Hagerty and staff have lots of talent to bring a instant winner out this his first year. Like some of my last post Amat makes this blog. Fred throws out a Amat thread and the hits come out faster then any topic. To the haters deal with it or do not read it.

YOU da man. Well said, trouble is they STILL won't understand it.
They are the kind of people who drive 4x4 Excursions and yet complain of gas prices. Why are they even HERE? Do we post on THEIR threads?
Their arguement carries no logic whatsoever and as always NEVER, EVER say which school, if ANY, they support.
Posted by: Bleeds Blue and Gold | June 24, 2008 9:32 AM
Gotta vent, (and i don't even have a Coors Light).
Sorry Amat basher's, you are wrong, on so many levels. The Lancers are our D1 team. Period. Game over. If you want to root for someone else playing in the Pac 5, you have to go to nasty old Orange County, Long Beach, or the North Valleys. Enjoy the drive.
By the way, you say the Amat fans are cocky? Arrogant? Wait till you get a load of the rest of the best. Servite, Mater Dei, Edison, Canyon, Hart, MISSION VIEJO!!!! The most arrogant 10,000 Bishop Amat fans that ever lived couldn't stand in Bob Johnson's shadow when it comes to arrogance and attitude. Sorry ladies, the swagger comes with the territory when you play D1.
To those who pick on the Amat neighborhood I suggest you visit perennial D1 powerhouse Long Beach Poly, just drive by at lunch, (I do, a couple times a week for the last 25 years or so), because the area makes La Puente look like the Hamptons. Longos, Crips and Khmer gangsters compete for the talent that Coach Lara hasn't hooked up yet. Oh yeah, Raul Lara's day job? Probation Officer. Make of that what you will.
I know, you think the recruiting is unfair. Me too. I mean those thousands of Catholic Clergy out there at Pop Warner Games offering the little local super stars illegal inducements to attend Amat is intolerable. I for one call for an end to it. As for those parents looking to place their kid in the highest visibility program they can find and still remain within 20 miles of home, do what you think is best.
The 3 and 7 thing? Tell you what Bunkie, you go take your little vikes or saints or braves or whatevers and line up a season of Los Osos, O Lou, Crespi, Loyola, Notre Dame, etc and let me know how you do. Matter of fact, play the Lancer pre-season and let me know if you have enough kids left to start league.
Really the trouble with most of the anti-Amat crowd is they know little about the game and make no attempt to learn. My advice is to get out this season and watch a Moore or Trinity League game. Hit the Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei contest and you might get lucky on one of those $5000 50/50 raffles.

as long as we are talking Bishop Amat football i wanted to find out who is the PA Announcer for the games- he is the worst i have heard. he has a terrible voice tries to do play by play and is a total homer- i enjoy watching Amat but i dread going to the home games and having to listen to him. I am the PA Announcer for a local school in Whittier and i know my job is to inform the crowd but not get carried away and be professional at all times. The announcer at Amat needs to undersatnd what his job is- i know he has done it for years but the shcool needs to find someone who will do the job properly.

I dont think fans really hate Amat.... They have a great program with a long tradition... I think the situation is like this... You know how some parents go around bragging about how good there kid is and most people get anoid with them... Well Amat is that kid... Last year 3-7 and now there going to have a brake out year... Why dont we wait and see what kind of year they have after say three games and hopefully they are 3-0.. then someone can step up and start bragging about how great the kids are and the coaching.... And Hey Fred.... you need to wipe some of that brown stuff off your nose. Lets hear about some of the other schools in the valley. I think their kids work just as hard as the kids at Bishop Amat U.

I had a chance to attend a lot of Amats freshman and JV games last year, and let me tell you that Johnson, is not the only "hidden Gem" at Amat.
There is a kid named Anderson who will be an impact player either next year or the year after.
Lots of good talent at Amat coming up in the ranks.

First Notre Dame gets their own station with all their games despite them sucking now and Amat now gets it's own blog for a newspaper that is supposed to represent all the SGV schools. This is not a fair idea or one that represents the opinions of most of your subscribers. Well, let's hope Amat improves and doesn't end up like Notre Dame.

amat should be a good team this year provided it finds some lineman and some depth. i know price is a good player, but i hear they have a couple other good skill kids. i know someone on the oregon coaching staff and he told me there was a kid from amat there who won the defensive back MVP. he told me the kid's name is johnson. according to him, he and the rest of the coaching staff were really impressed with this kid. does anyone know him?

However that isn't even my bigest beef....again what about integrity, loyalty, what his team has already built mainly around him??? Now i get an injury could end all that anyways......but do we have to teach at the high school level - hey quit on a team there is a better one around the corner. What next - How about football at Amat, then go to Glendora for Basketball and why not South Hills for baseball??? DO YOU NOT SEE A PROBLEM WITH THT?? Can YOU at least give us that?

JACAZZ,
First off all you say is true because you say so? Second Loyalty runs deep with this kid and he does not need Amat nor does Amat need him. What makes you think he even wants to play at the next level of football and he is not considering just running track and having his scollie that way?. You are in it from the Amat stand point to land a better then average football player. It is not happening and Wilson will suit him just fine. Even on a losing team stars stand out and get noticed. You forget he is a tack star as well. Amat is fine without Gilmore. Seals,Prieto,Darian Johnson, not to leave out a few others are going to just fine in that Amat backfield. Cut the recruiting cra-, this kid is more than a football player.

Fred, can't tell whose worse; you or the other knuckle-heads! I am referring to your comment regarding "arrogant" Amat fans and to your poor spelling when referring to Amat's make or "brake" year. Shame on you. We thought you were a professional.

Cheesy you say...well pass the mayo !
Actually, I know the way it sounded was really going ot set off a few folks on this thread.
But the facts are what they are and the fact is that everything I said in that post was true.
If for example, you were to look at all the issues I brought up, even the most die hard hater would have to admit that such a move would strongly benifit the young man down the road.
Would you at least give me that ?

Fair enough Fred, Thanks, a recap of Amats games week to week will send this blog off the hook. Nice Job.

jcaz -- HAVE YOU NO INTEGRITY?? How tacky to come on here and pose such a phony, cheesy attempt at some major recruiting. AND this is just another classic reason WHY so much hatred towards Amat. I have no vested interest in Gilmore but now -- I would HATE to see him go to Amat. SHAME, man that was just classless.
