Hall of Fame: West ends streak, 34-14

Above: South El Monte's Tommy Cogburn had three touchdowns on Friday.

So much for the West missing all those headliners who chose Saturday's Fiesta Bowl instead. They were pumped man, firing each other up like it was some sort of playoff game. Loved that emotion. Yeah, there was a chip on on their shoulders, and none bigger than the rock South El Monte High School's Tommy Cogburn knocked off his, stealing the show at the 29th annual Hall of Fame game at Bassett High School. The Eagles receiver scored three touchdowns and set up another to lead the West to a 34-14 victory, which ended the East's six-game winning streak. Cogburn's going to Fullerton J.C., but you know what, he's better than a lot of guys on scholarship. He's a foot-baller, plain and simple. West Covina's Isaac Tucker had the big game for the East, scoring a touchdown and returning a 90-yard kickoff that set up the East's other touchdown. The East quarterback tandem of Ayala's Matt Baca and South Hills' Brandon Parham could never get anything going. The East trailed 14-0 at half at cut it to 21-14 after three, but this was the West's night. They wanted it more, that much was obvious.

Video of Friday's game

FRIDAY'S PREVIEW
It wasn't a crushing defeat, but the East's 14-13 victory over the West in last year's Hall of Fame All-Star Football Game was the sixth consecutive victory for the East.
Charter Oak High School running back Kanaan Snowden isn't expecting the streak to end when he participates for the East squad in the 29 th edition of the game tonight at 7:30 at Bassett High School.
The East leads the series, 17-9-2, and has won five of the last six by a touchdown or less.
"We don't want to be the team that blows the streak," said Snowden, who is on his way to Mt. SAC this fall. "We need to keep this going. "This doesn't feel like an all-star team. We've gotten pretty close the last couple weeks and we've come together as a team. With all this talent, the West is going to have their hands full."
In more ways than one.
The West has lost several high- profile players to the second annual Fiesta Bowl, which pits CIF-Los Angeles City Section teams against CIF-Southern Section schools Saturday at L.A. Wilson High School.
Pasadena quarterback Tyron Crockum, Arcadia's Oregon state-bound Kevan Walker, and Arroyo quarterback Brian Partida all have opted to participate in the Fiesta Bowl.
But don't feel sorry for South El Monte coach Erick Escamilla, who will guide the West team.
Escamilla says Duarte quarterback Austin Goldsmith has been terrific in practice, as has Falcons running back Chris Harris, South El Monte running back Jonathan Mendoza and wide receiver Tommy Cogburn.
"I'm from South El Monte, so we're used to being the underdogs," Escamilla said. "It's like anything else, we'll play as hard as we can and do the best we can. But yeah, it's obviously (losing players to the Fiesta Bowl) a blow because this is just affecting our team and not the East squad."
The East is loaded, especially in the backfield.
Snowden is joined by Bishop Amat's Marcus Wagner and West Covina's Isaac Tucker.
"What a great problem to have," La Puente and East coach Ray Hernandez said. "Those are three special players. They aren't just starters, they're game-changers. It will be fun watching each one do his thing."
Ayala quarterback Matt Baca, who was sacked 72 times on an 0-10 team as a junior, led the Bulldogs to a 7-4 record and a playoff appearance his senior year.
The 6-foot, 2-inch, 210-pound quarterback threw for 2,400 yards and earned a scholarship to Northern Colorado.
Hernandez said Baca will get the start tonight.
"He's done an outstanding job of grasping everything we've asked to do," said Hernandez, who will also use South Hills' Brandon Parham at QB. "Matt was in an offense that primarily threw the ball. He's hitting receivers all over the place, I really have high hopes for him."
The receiving corps consists of Charter Oak's Mikey Harrell, Bonita's Tanner Zylstra and Glendora's Michael Edwards.
Add to that South Hills linebacker Damon Kuklinski, Bishop Amat tight end Julian Silva, Covina linebacker Charles Shorts and Los Altos defensive lineman Nick Longoria, and it's no wonder Hernandez feels so fortunate.
"It's exciting to have this caliber athlete at every position," Hernandez said. "It's kind of what we dream about as coaches, to get those kind of individuals in every spot."
As far as winning and game planning, Hernandez said he will stick to what he knows best.
"We took the approach of we're going to do stuff we had some success doing at La Puente," Hernandez said. "When you mix what we have and fit it in with the caliber of athletes and football players we have, it's scary. It will be fun to watch how our system works with all-stars at every position."

Comments

actually he is a life trainer-coach.
I just screwed up

Billy I agree with the Jimmy as a helper comment and know that speed training helps BIG TIME...but the truth is it's manufactured speed. It only helps those with skills beat those without...HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL. Just like what happened at the game. At the next level.....most if not ALL are BORN QUICK AND FAST....and BIG and STRONG and work just as much as Tommy. I DRIVE A 911 4S AND TRUST ME FAST IS FAST BUT GERMAN FAST IS SICK! That's the difference a Corvette or no Corvette...quality is quality...drive it and you'll know what I mean.

Now to the point about Jimmy helping kids with grades and such....ASK YOURSELF THIS SIMPLE UNDENIABLE QUESTION:

"IF" YOUR KID OR YOU HAD THAT SLIVER OF A "CHANCE" TO GET A "FREE" SCHOLARSHIP TO PLAY A "GAME YOU LOVE" WOULDN'T THAT BE ENOUGH MOTIVATION TO HIT THE BOOKS, STAY OUT OF TROUBLE AND GET THAT BRASS RING????

See it's not Jimmy who needs the "push" or should be held accountable to "push or mentor" it's the kids/parents responsibilty to make that effort and get it done. He's a SPEED trainer not a LIFE TRAINER??? Too many athletes live on that "crack" of special attention and special circumstances....all the other NON ATHLETES in the world just have to play with the cards that have been dealt to them. And just like tin he Real World no one cares about your "special circumstances"...GET IT DONE OR I'LL FIND SOME WHO WILL!!!! That's the REAL WORLD.

Best of luck Tommy. Big fan of yours and Coach Andre. Playing with your brother is a rush Tommy. I did it and looking at my brother in the huddle always gave me chills. THE 'SOUTH' WILL RISE AGAIN!!!!

Haven't had a chance to post on this board since the game was played on Friday.
All I can say is that Tommy Cogburn is hands down the best reciever in the valley, he was the difference in the game and without him its a close game. I don't know why they put Parham in at QB, he was a great reciever and defensive back throughout the season why not play him there? Matt Baca should never have been taken out, he started the game out of synch., but he was one of the best QB's in the area throughout the season, he certainly would have come around with his passing.
Once he was taken out, the East passing threat was gone so the West was teeing off on the running game. Of all the corners that lined up on Cogburn at least WC's Ryan Henson [who did not play corner at all through the season] didn't let him score a TD, not bad for a kid who played his freshman year as a defensive end.
Duarte's Harris also some good runs, & Isaac Tucker
from West Co. had a great game with nice runs despite no blocking and 2 nice kickoff returns, [the one that was 85 or 90 yards & another that was near midfield] The west lines were dominant especially towards the 2nd half. I don't think the players that left the West
team to go play in the Fiesta would have made the game much differen't, Harris from Duarte is as good as the Muir back and I also don't think there was any drop off at the qb position for the West. The difference in the game was Cogburn & the lines.

reality czech,

You're right, that is the bigger story. But at that point, I would venture to say its the parents fault. Training is not a forced thing, and if the grades start slacking, kids shouldn't be training. But its up to the parents to teach their kids time management. Hence the reason why I say speed kills does not serve as a hamper on kids' success on and off the field.

Billy Hinzo

Billy, the bigger story isn't about what program or trainer a player uses it's that some kids and families put all their eggs in the athletic basket and go to these trainers while ignoring their studies, which are going to get them farther.

reality czech,

Let us indeed spread that message. It is very much so about the classroom, and I don't disagree with the library comment. What I do disagree with is suggesting that speed kills is a hamper to an athlete's success. Like you said in your second comment, it has helped many others make it to the next level. I was merely asserting the possibility that Nolan could be helping kids' situation rather than hurting it. Whether it be attaining scholar athleticism or helping a kid on the edge manage to graduate.

Billy Hinzo

Hey reality czech

Anybody from Amat take over the game?

Enough Said!

Billy Hinzo

Great point!

And I might add:

"Its not what we do, its how we do it"

Speed Kills baby!!!!!

Sorry Joe Amat, but your understanding of Amat is not the current standard. I personally lived through the student athlete saga there RECENTLY and none of the programs you note were on board there. Unfortunately, this is why there are so many criticisms about Amat and the money that is paid for the mediocre (at best) education that is obtained there. Amat posts stats with J.C. included-other private school do not do this. Locally, other than Damien and Saint Lucy's this is the only other private school believed to be worth the tuition. The bottom line is that Amat is living off of reputation and NOT results!

First, your name tells me where you fit on the food chain. Thanks for that. You can also keep the 'barrio" comments out... we are talking about a South El Monte kid, and I know where I'd feel more comfortable walking at night.

I'm guessing that there are probably some knuckleheads that screw up in their senior year or 2nd semester. But in order to come back in September, you have to make up the class in summer school. So kids should start the school year all caught up.

However 95% of students go on to college. And since we are talking football, lets talk about recruitable football players. I'm guessing that of all of the scholarship players that Amat's had (don't ask) there may be 3 players in the past 20 years that have been "recruitable" and did not get it done in the classroom. Two of those three were a little undersized and it might not have been grades, they just may not have received offers.

The school has an Academic Inclusion Program to support the learning of all students by addressing the unique learning needs of those with special needs. Students are identified through special testing to identify such needs. The Program puts in place all appropriate accommodations to facilitate learning in the school's college preparatory environment.

You are paying tuition to have all of the resources you need to succeed. It's the difference between going to college at Occidental, Whittier, or La Verne vs Cal Poly Pomona or Cal St LA. the smaller private school keeps tabs on you and you don't get lost in the shuffle. That's what you pay for. We have a couple of graduates at D1 schools today that, when they entered school I would have bet your paycheck that they wouldn't last. But they worked hard. listened to their coaches and counselors and are getting free educations living the D1 dream. On someone elses dime.

The coaches that have been successful are those that stay on top of the athletes grades and make sure that they use those resources keep them eligible. This new staff has a bunch of very good classroom teachers as well, and should do a better job of that.

reality czech

Hey you amat piece of Shiite. So, you're telling us that every amat student enrolled actually graduates, and with a 2.0 gpa?

FT(AMAT)W

Seriously Billy, a kid that has spent 6-7 years with a program should be the "poster boy" for that program. Too bad there's not a better testimonial there. I'm sure that the programs helped others. Too bad this one didn't listen to the message that you say is spread.

do you disagree with the library comment?

It's not speed that kills-it's bad grades! Let's spread that message

reality czech,

Still takin shots on Jimmy Nolan and speed kills?

Many athletes have gone to the next level with the help of Nolan.

Please stop now.

Jimmy Nolan is not poison to the environment. Hes not out to kill people. If you spent ten minutes talking to him you would find that he very much emphasizes having the whole package (academics, athleticism, family, and hard work).

He's just a guy trying to help kids out. Let's leave it at that.

Billy Hinzo

BCASG,

Bravo! Bravo! I was asking a question and you took it the worng way, but I could see your point. I put my foot directly in my mouth! Bigot? Never! I can MAN up on a misquote.

reality czech

I think the number stands at over 70 kids who have moved on to scholarships at the advice of Mr. Nolan.

Pretty low shot for not knowing the facts or Tommy' situation.

You can only mentor so much but the accoutablity does fall in the hands of the student. Mr. Nolan can't go to school for them.

Pretty sad comment for an Amat guy....

someone asked how LA did at the Bonita passing leauge torney. they did well dispite only winning 1 game out od seven. They will be in trouble during the regular season, because they don't have a go to guy they looked very average and small. They did show alot of heart and fight and hopefully that will get them through some tough games, cause talent is not, not much there. Wish them lots of luck in the upcoming season. I will be rooting for you boys.

Fred, did you get that Cogburn was going to Fullerton from Tommy or from another source? If it wasn't from Tommy directly you might want to check that source. He is headed to New Mexico Highlands to play a year with his brother. He had always wanted to play alongside his brother and now will get the chance. Hopefully he gets his grades in order and transfers to a D1 program once he gets a year of college behind him!

Conqueror Joe,

LA didn't do to well at the 7 on 7, they won one or two out of five the first day and lost both games on Saturday. They were missing a few key people.

The freshmen team looks good. I don't think the team is as strong as the past two teams. The 06' team had great skilled players, the 07' team had a great line. The 08' team to early to tell.

6 or 7 yrs at speed kills? what a great job they must do mentoring kids on the importance of grades. sounds like kids'd be better suited spending time elsewhere-like the library.

Huckster - This one is directed right at you. Would you consider it to be acceptable for a white person to come on a board and clamour for a white coaches all star game. Or the Brown Pride All Star Game. C'mon man. Before you open your mouth - SHHHHHHHHHH! Listen. James Heggins was the coach last year. Darryl Thomas coached the game in 2001. Be careful. I know you think you have the right to be a bigot (better yet ethnocentric) but you don't. You do have the right to be an idiot however and that, sir, is a title befitting your last comment.

Yeah,
Because we all saw how good the Pasadena schools have done in the playoffs the last two years right?

The game was not won by interceptions or big returns, it was won in the front line. Look at every lineman that the West had, easily outweighing the East lineman. They were bigger than the Eastern lineman and could give the QB and RB as much time as they needed, with the exception of all the Shorts tackles(that kid is special). The West ran the same plays that they scored in... basically a 9 route.

Give Hernandez credit though. He has like 9 linemen to work with. There really was no debt in that area. Coaches will be coaches, but its really up to the players to win the game.

Cogburn went crazy in the Hall of Fame game, but there were several wide outs from the Fiesta game that Mr. Cogburn couldn’t touch! I see the little offenses’ that’s being ran out of South El Monte to San Gabriel with all this screen stuff, so I know if that’s what the Pasadena area schools have to look for in the playoffs this will be easier than I thought. I’m asking Scott G and Fred R. who selects these coaches for the All Star game or maybe should we have a “Black Coaches All Star Game”?

curious

All recruiters know about the grades up front.

As far as Speed Kills. Tommy started going there before he entered high school, so in between football, and track, he's probably been attending for 6-7 years.

Word at SK is the Gators are very interested when the grades come up.

what schools were seriously recruiting Cogburn before finding out about his grades? will they stay with him and wait? how long did he do speed kills?

TOMMYCOGBURN

The boy went off last night. He was in a class of his own last night. Once the grades come up, Tom will be able to accept an offer to any school in the country. speed kills boys, speed kills. ENOUGH SAID.
www.speedkillsusa.com

I'm glad a lot of the West players played in the Fiesta game, because it could have been 70 - 14 deal! The East was terrible and the coaching was worst! The CIF All-Stars blew the City Section out! Pasadena kids went crazy! 45-21!

Coaching???????
Were you at the game? People started leaving early in the 4th quarter because it was so frustrating even though the outcome was still in doubt. The point was it was not fun for the kids pounding the ball up the middle may be effective to win games if you are Norco and have 5 300 pound lineman. It was like pounding your head against a wall. Run up the middle everytime. It was an all star game open it up and have fun. Anyone at the game would agree with it.

i wonder how the game would have been if the sgv tribune player of the year dorian wells played....

tommy vs. dorian

i think mr. wells would have come out on top

How did LA do and look at the AIR ASSAULT??

Does anyone have details?

How does Summer look?

I especially would LOVE some details about the FRESHMAN team.

C'mon people. It's just a football game, and an all-star one at that, where the point is just to have fun.
After last weekend's sports' tragedy, let's try to keep things in the proper perspective.
No reason to bash anyone.

believe it - who's Mr. Nolan?

Even being underdogs the Westside proved to be the best at the end of the night.

So much for the east always having the size. Its not the size of the player. Its the size of the heart. And the west definetly had a bigger heart.

Big shout outs to tommy cogburn aka West Welker..you'll be there someday.

The duarte kids was really doing it big out there. Even though it should have been another touchdown by DARIUS REESE #3 on an interception. That would have turned the whole game around.

Congrats to the west!!!

we have a few pretty good atheletes at duarte. where doing pretty good in passing league. dont be surprised if we have a good year in 08.

GO FALCONS!!!!

Whay do you bash Hernandez? Last year everyone bashed Heggins. BTW - Wasn't it a Montview coach that started the streak back in 2002? I am not sure but i thought the LP coach was the first one to win it and started the former streak but I may be mistaken. My buddy's son played for him on that team and I think that was the year.

Enjoyed watching the athletes from Duarte HS. Now to the next level. Harris got a full-ride scholarship and signed with Utah State, Congratulations #7. Reese to San Jose; Vasquez to Arizona and Goldsmith will be at Citrus JC. Good Luck!!

hey fred
are u gonna cover the air assault today at bonita

curious

First of all, every athelte has to performance in the class room as well as the football field.

I am sure Tommy has learned alot about the process of recruiting and what the single most important thing is...Grades!

Mr. Nolan preaches grades, grades, grades, because he understands the process better than most, especailly because he's lived it!

Good luck to Tommy, one great game last night. Get your grades in check at Fullerton and we'll see you at D1 someday!

Just goes to show the Montview League is not ready to play with the big boys. Hernadez has all the talent but does not know what to do with it. He runs his horrible predictable up the middle offense and get beat. Use the talent you had!

The only coach in the Montview League that knows anything or has won a playoff game is Crutchfield. I am calling it now in JUNE Duarte wins the Montview League, not because they have more talent then any other school in the league but the coaching in that league is horrible, I have seen pop warner coaches call better games than that game last night, great job Robeldo on ending our streak and picking a horrible coach. Just goes to show you know nothing either about the teams you cover. You got to know the Montview league is weak and you have had to have witnessed a game or two to see the coaching.

I attended the HALL OF FAME GAME Friday night . It was an exciting game, with lots of twist & turns. The two kids from Duarte where electrifying ,either one could of broke the game open at any minute, that’s way High school football is so special, every kid plays their hearts out. Special Props to “ Travis Shafer “From El Rancho who was a work horse on the line I think he never missed a down on offence. An interception was thrown at the beginning of the third quarter. Travis kept working, even though the kid was about to hit pay dirt, Travis made the needed stop and save the game from being tie. Both sides played hard. Plus really like BASSETT’S new football field & track, very nice.

Quite simple: grades

great single game performance by cogburn. after all that work with speedkills why did he only end up at fullerton jc? wasn't the speedkills guy on here trying to tell people how to be recruited? what happened?

Speedkillz

Thanks, Tommy C!

La Puente Coach must have borrowed Verti's old play book. That offense looked like Amat the last 2 years. Just painful, wasn't it?

Was it just me or did that La Puente coach suck. The east came out with fire but with the east horrific offense that consisted of nothing but running the ball straight up the middle with skilled running backs not bruisers. They didn't open anything up. The west at the end of the game had 9 guys in the box because they knew the play call was going to be run the ball up the middle with one of three 185 pound running backs. The west opened it up had more fun and therefore won. It was just ridiculous to me what this guy did. He was running the ball with five minutes left and they were down 2 touchdowns. I know he had tree talented running backs but they aren't between the tackles runners they needed to get into open space. It was very dissapointing for the east kids i'm sure. They had much better athletes. I didn't see the stats but I don't think they completed one pass and they only threw the ball at most 7 or 8 times. That Ayala kid threw a real good ball too. It was just a shame to see all those great kids talents handcuffed by a coach with no imagination.

I guess the MVL does have talent after all. Tommy Cogburn is one of the best reciever in the state. I think that their was a guy by the name of Eddie McMillan from Rosemead who won the MVP a few years ago.

Good job Hernandez. Even with a team filled with all-stars you can't win. Looks like La Puente last year was a once in a life time 7-4. Warriors get ready for another 2-8 season.

Bassett HS field is very nice and a great choice for an All-Star game. Where do you find these people that seem to only see bad things in certain places? Get on the ball loveshsfootball have you read the paper lately. Very good choice CIF

Ops, I guess that the west must not have made the last extra point.

I was walking to my car when they scored the last TD and I assumed they converted. Oh well...

Note on the East vs West Game

Issac Tucker was the only reason why the West was'nt compleatly humiliated tonight. The so called underdog West team compleatly dominated the game from start to finish.

It seemed to me the the whole philosophy of the east team was to run run and run some more, because of the faith they must have had in thier run game. After all, they had a stable of great backs in the game this evening, Unfortunatly, in this game, that did'nt work out to well for them, because the west team took the east, out of thier offense early.

Tucker carried his team, literaly on his back this evening, and he was without a doubt, the best running gack on that team.

I was however, very disapointed on the play of Marcus Wagner this evening. But in all fairness to him, I beleve that he must have aggravated his old ankle injury, because I saw him getting an ice pack applied to his ankel at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

The sad thing for the East team was that, as a fan, I went to see a football game, but ended up seeeing a better Rugby game instead. Well, actually, that was at halftime, but, those two teams seemed to play with much more inspiration than then the entire east team tonight.

As for the game itself, you could really tell that the kids were not in any kind of football shape.

In the first half, a guy was puking his brains out in the middle of the field.

Still, as the game went on, the teams seemed to play much better, especially by the second half.

West 35 East 14 when I left.

vacationing in mexico, did not get to go, please someone give me details? I hear that kid Parham was at QB and not WR. Hpw did that work out?

is it me or do we give la puente little credit. the whole east side of the valley could do something only la puente could this season, which is stop number 7, chris harris

props to shorts though. he gave his heart out and dam does me get a quick shot off the ball

at the end only one thing mattered
WEST SIDE WON!!

Fred,
that yearbook offense at charter oak high was hilarious.
sincerely,
david duke and mark fuhrman

the game should have been @ la puente high i mean it has a great background of hills and a new field and great parking with a great view of the valley. Its perfect for a movie being filmed there, I mean they do film movies in la puente why not have a game there.

loveshsfootball,
I believe they want to have the game as close to the 605 as possible. The game used to be at Arroyo HS. I just believe bassett with the new field and proximity was the choice for the coordinators.

loveshsfootball,

I year old turf field.

It's purty.

hope miike edwards has big game tonight he deserves it!

just curious as to why the game is played at Bassett-there are much better places to play-better stadiums in a much safer area-either Mt SAC- maybe Covina Stadium or West Covina -but bassett?????-not a good choice.
