Hall of Fame Countdown: Henson
What: San Gabriel Valley Hall of Fame Game
Where: Bassett High School
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Who: East vs. West

Former teammates: West Covina's Ryan Henson trying to chase down South Hills' Dorian Wells
By Fred J. Robledo
Ryan Henson arrived at West Covina High School with more questions than answers.
He had gone to Bishop Amat and Mater Dei, but his football resume consisted of nothing more than height and weight. How quickly that changed.
There's no doubting Henson's ability any more, not after the strong safety earned CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division second-team honors in his senior season.
There also were first-team All-San Antonio League and Tribune second-team all-area selections. Henson, who had 137 tackles - 68 solo - and two interceptions, is one of the headliners for the West team in Friday's San Gabriel Valley Hall of Fame All-Star Game at Bassett High.
"It's exciting to be here with all these guys," said Henson, who is hoping to continue his career at Mt. SAC. "This is a game I've been looking forward to for a long time.
"I'm one of those guys who has a lot to prove. I moved around my last year, so I kind of went unnoticed. But I think I can play with a lot of guys moving on to the next level, and this is another way to show it."

Henson, 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, shined on the freshman squad and was called up to varsity during his sophomore year, but that didn't translate into a bigger role as a junior.
Henson almost never played his junior season and complained he was out of position as a defensive end.
"It was frustrating," Henson said. "I think I played in one game. I just didn't see it getting any better there. With my senior year coming up, I wanted to play."
Henson became one of the first of more than 10 Lancers to leave Bishop Amat following the 2006 season. He left in February 2007 to take on an even bigger challenge by enrolling at Mater Dei, where he ran track that spring.
Mater Dei?
"You know what, looking back, that was a bold move," said his father, Rob. "But we believed he could do it. We wanted him to believe he could play there, and in that short time he was there, just working out with those guys gave him a lot of confidence.
"We thought he was out of position at Bishop Amat. He was getting some great looks at safety and corner at Mater Dei, but then we ran into another (obstacle)."
Henson's grades slipped, and he was forced to leave Mater Dei after the school year ended. He enrolled at West Covina and took two summer classes to make himself eligible for the fall.
He became an instant fit.
"It was great playing football again," Henson said. "I don't regret leaving Amat because I never knew if I would get an opportunity there.
"Going to Mater Dei? That was an experience. The curriculum was a lot for me at first. I kind of felt overwhelmed trying to concentrate on so many things and fell behind in classes. But I've always been a good student and straightened that out real quick.
"But I don't regret that (Mater Dei) either because it all worked out in the end. I had a great time at West Covina and found out a lot about myself by going through that experience."

START THE FRESHMAN THAT TRANSFERED IN. LENHART IS WEAK. BECAUSE THE STARS CAME FROM CANYON HILLS MIDDLE SCHOOL AKA PRICE, SEALS, PRIETO, CREAGER THEY LINK IN LENHART WITH THAT BUNCH BECAUSE THEY ALL PLAYED TOGETHER UP THERE IN CHINO. IS THAT THE BEST FIT? A QUESTION THAT NEEDS ANSWERS. CARRILLO WAS HORRIBLE BUT NEVER A CHANGE. POLITICS. LENHART LAST YEAR HORRIBLE NEVER A CHANGE POLITICS. THIS YEAR LOOKS MORE LIKE THE SAME HOPEFULLY HAGERTY HAS A QUICK HOOK UNLIKE VERTI THAT HAD NO HOOK. HAVING DAD ON THE SIDELINES FOR LENHART IS A DISTRACTION.

Well no quarterback looked really good, each had a few good balls. The sophomore needs work. I want real ballers.
Posted by: la | June 30, 2008 6:16 PM
Yep its like Carrillo class of '07 all over again. He sucked all season, no change ever. Politics do exist at Amat.
Posted by: Amat is Still Lacking | June 30, 2008 5:01 PM
With Gary Souza (physical Tranier) as Lenhart dad the QB job is as political as it gets. Ask the dads of last years back ups Iglesias and McClanahan. If Lenhart chose to quit baseball and train for the QB spot this year and has shown no improvement then Amat will be one dimensional and run the ball again/ Put 8-9 in the box and game over for Amat. Amat needs that passing game and with Rix there they better come out throwing some this year. You cannot compete in pac 5 with out a passer.
Posted by: Oh NO! not again | June 30, 2008 4:23 PM
Lenhart is not a quality QB. Amat better figure something else out by the start of the season. Nuff said.
Posted by: Amat is Still Lacking | June 30, 2008 9:55 AM
Apparently you didn't read what I just wrote. Those guys are idiots and whoever hires them is just as big of an idiot. Hagerty is going to turn the program around with the quality of coaches he has on all levels. I back him and his staff 100%.
Posted by: That Staff was horribly Assembled | June 30, 2008 9:17 AM
Somebody better get on the ball quick after that implosion yesterday at the Bonita Passing tourney. Offense was horrible with no execution or imaginative play calling. They also need to rethink the 11 players on each side of the ball theory and let the players who can ball play. It does not matter if the defense will get tired, they will end up on the field all game anyway. Oh yeah, an Isaiah Bowens playing tight end against colony-1 catch - 2 drops - 1 broken ankle. Great!
Posted by: la | June 29, 2008 9:47 PM
To That Staff was horribly Assembled,
Would you agree that whoever hires those clowns is a brain dead idiot that has no clue how to run a program and will probably lose every game?

Just admit all the coached sucked. that explains that 3-7 sh**** record
Posted by: sh**** record | June 28, 2008 12:41 PM
Where is Adamek coaching? and where is Chewie coaching this coming season? Math Done! They suck as coaches! That whole staff with the exception of McCutchen,Taylor and Spooner looked like Pop Warner Coaches, including Verti himself. They all got canned and rightfully so. There were many of times McCutchen winced at what Verti was doing. And we all know about the St. Paul Field goal story. It was that type of coaching that got them canned. Organizatonal skills for that staff were at a all time low as compared to Amat football standards, Parents knew it, players knew it, but best of all the coaches knew it. Hagerty will show how a real coach gets the job done. He has already done so by assembling a core staff, If Verti would have done this by getting good solid football coaches he is still there as the head coach. Heck the president puts good men around him, Verti chose his chums..Sa - la -vi

Coach Devera, I'll touch it. before I go any further, I would also agree a lot of the Coaches on Verti's staff did get a bad wrap. I dont think they deserve all this hoopla, that we as Amat faithful give them.
Also, Henson at Amat was never a db, so I believe that cannot be accounted for under Devera, Dominique Gaisie got hurt his senior year, and did not have the grades to make it immediatley to a Div 1 college. Bryce was never really a db, he was a running back by heart and skills.
Coach Devera, did not have the dinners like Coach Adamek or Coach Chuy, but he did have dinners with his players (but not before the games), according to a couple of seniors that graduated this year from Amat, he did everything his power to make them succeed. He was technique oriented and driven to push the players to the peak. Dont get me wrong some of his players did not understand why he pushed so hard, but they understood later. From my understanding not only did he care about them succeeding in football, but he pushed them hard to be good people. A lot of people have talked about him saying he was just a yeller, but hearing from other Coaches and from players, his was a Coach misunderstood because of his loud voice. But some of his players will vouch for him indicating not only is he a decent man, but a damn good football Coach.
That's my 2 bits
I apologize to many of you especially the past Coaches of Amat, I was one of the people who ridiculed you, because of my lack of understanding. From this point I will try to be more positive about Amat, their administrationa and so on.

I Beg to Differ
The last two years were very painful but I have nothing but respect for Coach Adamak, Chuy and Spoon. Like you indicated, Adamak and Chuy kept the lineman bonded every Thursday night for dinner. They also sat at the dinners and answered every question the parents would throw at them. Spoon didn't attend the dinners because he worked two jobs but he still made time for the kids. I know for a fact that Spoon would work all night and get very little sleep so that he wouldn't miss the practices. Spoon also went to several football camps with D. Austin and his father for support. I think the coaches are getting a little bit of a bad rap.
Coach DeVera, different story. Won't touch it!!! It hard to forget two long painful years and you have to wonder if a good staff was in place two year ago, other players such as Hensen, Brice, Dominique Gasie, would have have received D-1 rides. I wonder???
Posted by: "THE PAIN" | June 27, 2008 6:38 AM
I beg to differ
The Truth shall set you free.
Im reading all these blogs and let me set the record straight on some of Amat's Coaches, Chuy, Adamek were both Coaches that Coached the lower levels of football at Amat. Under Difiori's era. They were born raised Amat.
They were then raised to Varsity Status by Coach Verti. Im not here to down play what these Coaches did, but from what I saw they did a lot for my son who played for them. Yes, they did not have the productivity as we all wanted record wise. But I saw what Chuy and Adamek did for the Kids. They not only Coached but bonded that group together especially with those thursday night dinners before the game they set up for the kids.
Coach Chuy, was out of position when it came to Coaching, he and Adamek would have been better served Coaching the O-Line together. But somewhere along the line there seemed to be a pressing need for a D-Line Coach and Chuy stepped and worked hard.
As far as deVera goes, I have to say yes, I heard him a lot, on the field, his voice was loud, but it was never inappropriate. Upon talking to my son and his teammates, many of the players placed a great deal of respect for his spirituality. They say he is tough and demands a lot from them. But they believe that he is motivational. They believe he knows his DB technique. deVera was brought into Amat's Varsity staff under Coach Difiori's reign not Verti's. Difiori believed in him and so it seems Verti did too. Does he get the wrap for Difiori's staff or Verti's?

OG Amat, I never spoke on politics, I spoke on the negative influence of the Verti staff and kids being prepared for 4 year universities, but you must be new if you think politics do not exist at Amat. They exist everywhere, in every part of society. Ever heard the saying its not what you know, but who you know? Im not saying all coaches play favorites, just like not all parents are hypersensitive about their kids. In Amat's case, during the last 2 seasons which we are discussing, it would seem so considering the lack of adjustments of players or even in play calling or preparation. Some people are so stubborn or full of pride they would rather lose than take some constructive critiism. Ultimately Verti paid the price for that. But let's go back to his being hired as HC. There were more qualified candidates, some of which were accepting of the salary Amat was offering and the search committee didnt vote for Verti, so why did Mssgr. name him coach? Love of school is one thing and I can appreciate that, but please don't play ignorant, deaf or blind to what goes on around you. That only makes you a part of the problem.

OG Amat,
Well when lenhart sputtered as a junior last year and Iglesias (a senior) was there as a adequate backup they never ever gave him the chance to start the next game and always threw him in for mop up duty only. allseason this kid went thru that, politics yes Lenharts dad the AT on the sidelines. As far as Jeopardy and do the math, Adamek and Chuy as well as the screamer Devera were not very good coaches. I know devera is back at Walnut but chuy and adamek I dont think ever got another gig.
Posted by: There is some truth to this here on both sides. | June 26, 2008 10:30 AM
Verti Politics and Lancer 4 Life
It's not politics, it's just some parents can't accept that their kids are not as good as others and feel they need to scramble to find reasons, people, and even coaches to blame. Coaches want to win and despite assumed "friendships" with player's brothers, they wouldn't put someone on the field that hadn't rightfully earned the position.

Jepordy Answer;
First of all Jeopardy is the correct spelling.
You could pretty much tell you're an idiot because you can't even spell right. You say do the math, I hardly believe you have the answers, cause I am deeply pondering what the hell Adamek (an OL coach) Devera (the DB coach) and Chuy (DL) have to do with any of the crap that is being posted here.
Im tired of seeing people that know nothing about Football or the politics of Football talk crap about anybody. No one really knows what happen the last two years at Amat, we all know they werent the greatest two years in Amat history. But if this is about the "DEMISE" of Henson then I dont see any relation.
It's over folks Verti's era has come and gone. You keep crying about a History that cant be changed, its done, its over with, get over it. Talk about something new. Find a life or something that is worth talking about.
I saw Ryan Henson play Safety at LB at West Covina, yes he did well, good for him.
Move the Hell on, I want info on Hagerty and his new "Heralded Staff". That's what I want to know, how they are doing now, not back then, I already seen their past I want Amat's future. Any transfer, their Offense and Defensive Philosophy.
Can I have the real answers please, not a guy who says do the math and adds 2 + 2 and gets 5

Fred already posted Charter Oak..Getting spring impressions, starting with defending Miramonte League champion Charter Oak (10-2-1), who had nearly 130 kids out for spring practice. I asked about the conditioning of quarterback Chris Allen (who threw for 1,575 yards, 15 touchdowns), the improvement of soon-to-be junior running back Adam Muema (692, 9 TDs), the two "new" kids from Monrovia High School, and some of the surprise impact players. We also talked about the divisional realignment and schedule.
Farrar on Allen: "He looks outstanding. He had a good offseason workout program and is about 20-25 pounds lighter. He's doing what he needs to do to have a great senior season. There was this and that about him not being in shape, but that couldn't be further from the truth. We expect a lot from him next fall."
Farrar on Muema: "He had the best offseason I've seen in 15-20 years. I'm serious, I haven't seen a kid work that hard, he practically grew up in the weight room. With his talent and work ethic, he has a chance to do something very special. We've had a lot of good running backs, but Adam has the potential to have one of the best two-year runs that we've ever had."
Biggest Surprises -- The Chargers are about six deep at running back, and with a talented QB like Allen, they need receivers to balance everything out. Eric Rogers, a 6-foot-4 basketball and track specialist, has done well after not playing a down as a junior. Kyle Rycraw only had seven receptions in 2007, but the soon-to-be senior should be the No. 1 option, and has improved his stock as well. Farrar also noted that linebacker/tight end Tyler Perri has improved more than he anticipated.
Monrovia transfers: There have been rumors floating around about new faces on campus, and both are from Monrovia High School. The Chargers have added a pair of juniors in Brandon Golden, a running back who had 24 carries for 68 yards, and Leon Youngblood, a linebacker/running back who had 11 tackles and two sacks. "They look like they can fill some holes," Farrar said. "They've got some catching up to do, but they're certainly talented guys."
On Southeast Division: (Almont, Del Rio, Miramonte, Pacific, San Antonio) -- "I like that we don't have to drive as far, and I like the rivalries it creates with the other Valley teams, it's going to be fun. I wouldn't necessarily say we're (Miramonte and San Antonio) the front runners. Muir and Arcadia always have good teams, and we know they play tough football in the (Almont and Del Rio).

Coach Maggiore, Coach Allen, Coach Heilman, Coach
Dunn, Coach Hunter and the rest of the West Covina coaches are doing a good job at West Covina, the qb situation will be fine as they develope the new QB, as for the former QB, I heard that the game wasn't fun for him, his love is baseball so I wish him luck in his direction, can't blame him if his heart is not in it.
Bulldogs are looking strong!!

Congratulations Ryan,
It was fun and exciting to watch you play this year. You did a great job at safety and an even better job when they needed a linebacker and put you at that position. That seemed to be one of the turning points of the season, putting you at linebacker and John Hernandez comming back from injury to be able to fill the free safety spot
you had left.
Good luck at Mt. SAC and
in the hall of fame game,
and make the most of your future.

Congratulations Ryan. I will be at the game to check you out. Once a Lancer, always a Lancer. Good luck in your future as well. Take it and run. Antonio Pierce is a Sac Dawg. And i hear you and your dad keep in touch with him and his parents. That is a good connection. Mt Sac will be good for you. Take advantage of coach Martin from USC. He has a lot to offer. Extensive knowledge of the game. You will do fine Ryan. Have fun.

verti politics, i hear your point. but you do not have to accept anything. that was a choice that you made for your child. And i hope the best for him. Is he now going to a d1 university? lancerforlife says if he isnt, it doesn't make sense. The path one takes should not matter, as long as you get to where you want to go. Good luck with your son verti politics.

come on lancerforlife. you really believe that since a kid comes from amat means they shouldn't go to jc for any reason. Please, like fredj said, what if the parents cant afford it. 5600 a yr, for 4 yrs. now they have to spend for college. throw in a bad economy. Amat is a good school, but lately they have not been doing their job. If that was the case more kids would be getting academic scholarships and athletic scholarships from amat. Sounds like if you go to amat you get good grades and you get academic scholarship. easy route. more should do it. not always that simple though. some kids end up in jc for a multitude of reasons. Check Colt Brennan's route. I think he went to jc. and wasn't he at MD? So this kid went to a college prep school for 3 yrs and he should be at a d1. lancerforlife, why dont you help pay then?
Posted by: amat88 | June 25, 2008 4:26 PM
Fred,
With all due respect, its not about being ashamed, you can go to a Cal State University for roughly the same amount as Amat. If education IS important, you make it happen. Just like you come up with the tuition for Amat. The real issue is not finances, its GPAs and SAT scores. These kids are not qualifying for admission into 4 year programs like years past. Thats the reality.Thats the elephant in the room, nobody wants to talk about. Now especially with the written component to the SAT. These students are not prepared, but based on it being an Amat education, they should be. College preparation is supposed to be the difference, the advantage of an Amat education
In regards to being serious about education, going to a private college prepatory hs should signify the seriousness of education. Every child in today's world should be serious about education from elementary school forward, especially if their parents are financing that precollege education. Its the parents responsibility to make sure of that.
When all those young men left Amat, they and their families were crucified on this very blog about how they were sacrificing their educations by leaving. It doesn't seem so, based on the numbers of Amat grads going to JCs and their test scores.

I am just wondering. What are the schools that these former Amat coaches are going to be coaching at next year ?
This should be very interesting I think, because if they are still teaching at Amat and then coaching somewhere else, then how do they manage their time schedual ?

Why would any Parent pay on a avg. $5600 x 4 years $22,400 (not including books, supplies and attire)at a private Amat to see his kid end up at a JC? Deep pockets or no common sense as parents? Student first, Athlete second.
Posted by: What the Heck? | June 25, 2008 3:33 PM
lancer4life, you said, "Coming from a "college prep school" such as Amat claims, no student or parent should accept or settle for a JC being their next stop.
Maybe some parents can't afford the high cost of a university right away, especially after shelling out all those dollars at Bishop Amat. There is nothing wrong with two years of general education at Mt. SAC, then moving on to a four-year school. In fact it makes a lot of financial sense for most families, and shows which students are serious about school. I don't think any parent should feel ashamed if their kid goes to a community college first. It's now where you start, it's how you finish and what you do after you finish that counts.
Posted by: FredJ | June 25, 2008 3:27 PM
SGVfootball you just answered your own question. yes some of these coaches have moved on to coach elsewhere, where as the others? well you know that answer.
Amat88
We chose to stay and not quit and ride the pine like most poetential starters did. Hensons case, good for him his dad pulled him, took him elsewhere and the other nine transfers did as well. their choice and good for all of them that they played elsewhere. My whole point is a not feeling sorry for myself or my kid but that we had no choice we knew we were not getting a fair shake but the education at Amat was more important to us then a 10 game football schedule elsewhere. Kids come and go like revoling doors at the public school level but a private education is what we came to Amat for, the politics in the athletic dept. are not just at Amat but everywhere. We chose to sit there and do nothing and never complain because as we were told that gets you even deeper in the dog house with the incompentent coaches Verti Had. The coaches took allot of it personal if you questioned ones playing time because some senior parents did go that route and questioned playing time and guess what that kid never saw action. Like most, all they are, are HS football players and 98 percent will never play again. The unjust and the favoritisim that goes along with certain coaches as to who sucks up the best to them is huge. Certain players quit and stayed at Amat and played other sports due to the politics. The funny part is we played a little, but all in all, all the parents knew those two years of Verti and staff were going to be disaster. Ask the juniors who are entering their senior season what it was like to play under those conditions. They stayed for this upcoming season because of a New coach Hagerty but had Verti returned most were jumping ship..that is a fact.
Posted by: Verti Politics | June 25, 2008 3:22 PM
Amat88, Verti Politics wasn't taking a stab at the kids. Please stop reaching. If you read the post, he didnt speak of any players. I do understand where he is coming from in regards to Mt.Sac however.
Coming from a "college prep school" such as Amat claims, no student or parent should accept or settle for a JC being their next stop. We all understand things happen, but the majority of AMAT grads going to a JC, with or without athletics is a problem. Lets be honest with one another here, anyone with a high school diploma from anywhere or a GED can go to a JC. How many students from Amat's peers(i.e. Mater Dei, Loyola, Servite, etc graduate and go to a JC? Answer:less than or equal to 1%.
Once again, this is not a slight on the kids or players themselves, but rather a commentary on how well Amat prepares its students. 4 year colleges and universities should be the goal academically for all students, not a select few.

Congrats Ryan & keep up the good work!
Posted by: westcovina23 | June 25, 2008 2:19 PM
verti politics, you took a bad stab at the kids. 13th grade mt sac. really not necessary. because you and your child chose to stay and ride pine, you shouldnt blame those who left. In Henson's case he had a legitimate reason to leave. verti said he was not going to move him and would not give him any opportunity to play. I think Henson and his father did the right thing. Henson wanted to play so he left. Maybe Mater Dei wasn't the best choice for him. But, from what i personally know of the kid. That's what made him. His journey did it. I went to his spring practices with his father and Ryan developed into a safety in one spring session with MD. Imagine if verti would have tried to develop this kid. As far as jc. Mt Sac is not bad. I am happy for the kid, at least he didn't sit around like you feeling sorry for himself. He went out and did something about it. I think Henson's father also taught him a lesson like you taught your child. But his lesson was dont sit around and let someone tell you you are not good enough to do something. Go out and show them. Looks like that's what he's been doing ever since he left Amat.
Posted by: amat88 | June 25, 2008 2:11 PM
Verti Politics,
With respect to the new coaching staff at Amat, could you pin point specific coaches that were influential of your sons demise. Now, I know some of these coaches are in new staffs. So we have to let them know that the are accountable and hopefully this will not occur in other programs around the SGV.
Posted by: SGV football | June 25, 2008 1:52 PM
Thank you Lancer4life,
It was not a question of where he will play next year because he will not play next year, the fact of the matter is, besides Austin tell me how many other seniors are going to the next level, and do not include 13th grade Mt. Sac. The point I am making is we rode it out and did not transfer, but the ones that did had their reason. The biggest reason was the staff. McBrides dad knew he would not get the carries he wanted for Bryce so did what he had to do. As we watched the team play and get their asses handed to them with no tweaking of the lineup from game to game at all, I laughed and said they do not know as a staff what they are doing (that proved itself by them all getting canned). Not Bitter at all I stayed, showing my kid not to quit and teaching him the big picture in the way politics work, not only in a football team or sports in general but that those same politics will also be around in business and in life get used to it. I felt for Seniors that got left out, not only my kid but others who had the gift to start but were shelved due to the immaturity of these coaches. Never bitter just understood the BS and will be out there to support Amat reguardless of their oversight in the Verti years. Those two years I have to tell you, are the worst two years in Bishop Amat Football. Hagerty will even make that become clearer as he wins this year. Trust me not a bitter bone in my body remember I stayed but as Lancer4life put it , it is the truth.

I was sick personally when I saw this game on tv. 2 Amat standouts on the tube on different teams. Playing their butts off. I felt wells definitely won the battle, but henson was playing great. Several pass deflections, big hits on everybody. He shook up wells and the qb on a couple of occassions. Henson did not have a lot of help out there. He showed good foot speed and a strong upper body. I hear he has a little brother that was at west covina with him. what happened to him? And is there any truth to him coming to amat in the future?

Verti Politics isn't bitter, he just speaks the truth. 10 players leaving and Amat's record last season are a reality not bitterness or hate. Verti and crew should be held accountable for negatively affecting these young men's lives and possibly their futures. That is something that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Sorry to say, but you sound bitter. Who were these potential starters and which positions would they have filled?

This was a great article. I know Ryan and his father. Ryan is an excellent kid and multi-talented athlete. It was unfortunate what happened at Amat. I saw his father play, and he was nice. Extremely aggressive. Big hitter. Ryan is no exception. Glad to see he hung in there through all the obstacles. Congrats Ryan and continue football with much success. Amat88

Politics, my kid went thru the same thing but stayed and rode the bench his junior ans senior years altho he was better than the guy out there in front of him. One of Verti's assistant coaches was classmates at Amat with this starters brother. My kid had no chance and busted his a-- all summer and could not catch the coaches eye, it was obvious, players wondered about it. That was life with the Verti Staff for lots of potential starters. Glad Amat clean up its act and brought in some real coaches. The education of Amat is what kept us there. We stayed the course and put up with it.

Congrats Ryan. Just think, Amat and Verti wouldn't give you, as well as others the time of day. Now your in the All Star Game. Just imagine if Amat had used all the talent they had those last 2 years. What could have been.
