North takes it, 10-3

WALNUT - Playing like they had been together for four years, rather than one practice and a barbecue, the North beat the South, 10-3, in the San Gabriel Valley All-Star softball game at Mt. SAC on Wednesday night.
"These girls are true all-stars," North coach Jeff Butler said. "We had one practice on Monday. We did some outfield stuff, did some infield stuff, then hit off the machine. We kind of separated them so we were even at different positions. Then we had a barbecue and here we are."

Butler, head coach at Northview, went with his ace, Hannah Fraijo, to start the game in the circle.
Fraijo, who signed with Cal State Northridge last Friday, was dominant in her three innings of work. She hit one batter leading off the second for the South's only base runner against her. She struck out five in picking up the win.
The North scored five times in the second inning, getting five hits and taking advantage of two errors to jump in front.
Michelle Mounts of St. Lucy's started the scoring with a one-out single. Tarra Smith of Covina and Amanda Herrera of Charter Oak followed with singles and the North was on the board.
Caitlan Swan of St. Lucy's and Jessica Ulrich of Covina also had hits.
"We hit the ball well from top to bottom," Butler said. "We had 21 hitters on the team."
The South rallied in the fourth inning, scoring three runs leaving but two runners on base.
South El Monte's Diana Payan started the comeback with a one-out single. A walk to Mica Lopez-Del Haro of Rowland and a single by Jessica Traxler and an error put the South on the board. Two more walks and two groundouts made the score 5-3, but that turned out to be it for the South.
"Everyone got to swing the bat a couple of times," South coach Walt Martin said. "Everybody got in the field and they all had fun and that's what an all-star game is all about, I think. These girls are tremendous. You get to meet new girls and it is just a lot of fun."
West Covina's Prejel Dai're was the best pitcher for the South, shutting out the North in her three-inning stint.
The North added a run in the seventh inning then put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth.
Glendora's Talia Ferrari, who will attend Cal Lutheran in the fall, pitched the last three innings for the South.
The first hitter she faced reached base on an error. Ferrari shut down the next nine to close out the game.
Martin, whose Bishop Amat team was the runner-up in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV championship game last Saturday, made a commitment, of sorts, after the game.
"I've got a two-game losing streak now," Martin joked. "Guess I'll have to come back next year."
Smith, Herrera and Brittany Subia of Charter Oak each had two hits and Danielle Soda from Glendora had a double, the only extra-base hit in the game, for the North.
"There was a lot of cheering in the dugout," Butler said. "It's like we've been together forever. In fact they want to go play the Inland Valley champions next."
