Arroyo: It's McFarland time

Caught up with Arroyo football coach Jim Singiser before his much deserved trip to Maui, (so jealous). He said that 6-1, 180 pound, senior-to-be Austin McFarland will take over at quarterback for 2,000 yard departing senior Brian Partida. McFarland led the Knights to the championship of their own 12-team passing league tourney over the weekend, losing to Northview 24-15 after defeating West Covina, Montebello and Alhambra. McFarland, a shortstop on the baseball team, was a solid sophomore quarterback on JV before becoming a wide receiver his junior season with Partida on board.
"He's (McFarland) a good athlete, very smart and has done a real good job all summer long. He's a guy who puts the ball where it needs to be put, he's not going to put you in danger."
The Knights don't have many seniors, but after having a talented freshman class, there will be 14 or 15 sophomores on varsity.
"We won't have that senior leadership but we'll be talented," Singiser said. "We'll be young, but we won't make excuses. We know that South El Monte and Rosemead look awfully tough. But it will be interesting to see how South does without Tommy Cogburn. He was so much of their offense. But again, they've got (QB, Jose) Garay and other guys, so they'll be fine."
While Arroyo has done well in summer passing leagues, Singiser said you can't read too much into it.
"We had a kid out last year that we were convinced would be a starting all-league corner," the coach said. "But once he got the gear on he couldn't tackle a girls third grade class. You find out who has a great arm and who the athletes are, but you never know until you get the pads on."

Coaches tend to list "family reasons" or "personal reasons" a lot because the don't want to come out and say they just had enough. Besides that if you rip an administration in the news you could be burning a bridge down the line. Most of these coaches preach not quitting and how die hard they are for their school so to come out and say to your kids "I am quitting and coaching somewhere else" is a tough decision. It is easier to put it off on family and then pop up elsewhere. Difiori, Mooney, Gano, Oviedo, Koffler, MacKinnon and Shuster have all thrown out the family excuse... let it go. You are talking about high school teachers making about 40 cents an hour. It isn't Woody Hayes wearing the Maize & blue.

Whats the big deal about why Schuster landed at SD?
Last time I checked, its his life!
He'll do a great job over there, and hope he has some fun..

Fred; I think your doing all right! You have different subjects all the time, which keeps the blogging intresting. The one thing I do notice though is you are constantly talking about Bishop AMAT!
Take it easy (living legend)

I'm back after a year and a half...AHHHH I cant take it anymore.....Fred you are a complete donkey...You dont get it thats the problem! You say Shuster left cause of personal reasons....well since I have inside information (and i'll even got out on a limb and say my inside information is a hell of alot better then yours) the truth being he(shuster) agreed to become the dc at san dimas before he left Azusa but of course you get it right?!!!.....secondly and I am very sorry to say this but the overall talent in the sgv as far as football goes is way down....third i ask this how can two guys be on your top 10 qb's in the area when then were not even all league slections? oh and the guy who was first team all league returns for his senior season, so that kills that argument! Come on man do some homework....you are garbage....Trib fork out the money and bring back aram...this guy is a joke

Maui ? Hopefully he doesn't come back, sound like we need DJ back. He knows how to develop young players, and we could definitely use a bit more discipline. Still can't understand how you can have Singiser as our HC and not coach Mckinnon. Always a Knight, Go Arroyo.

Aztec Parent, you're making a bigger deal than it is. I know Aram made a big deal when DiFiori left Amat for personal reasons then wound up an assistant at La Salle. The same happened with Schuster. Both guys didn't want the headache of being the head guy, which I totally understand. They opted to be assitants, which gives them more time to spend with their families, and still satisfies their football fix. I get it, why doesn't everyone else.

Good to see and read about a smaller school on your blog!!! Man, all I ever see is about Amat, or South Hills!
Come on use your creative writing, and get out there and write about other schools FRED!
Like why is Schuster coaching in San Dimas, when he retired from AZUSA! For personal reasons???
Now there's a story for you to look into.
Don't forget about the smaller schools, they also have dreams of winning a C.I.F. CHAMPIONSHIP!
