Arroyo Seco moves on

Ryan Doeppel bounced a one-out, bases-loaded single through a drawn-in infield to score Matt Quintero in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Arroyo Seco a 2-1 victory over San Gabriel Valley in the Babe Ruth Baseball 16-18 Southern California state tournament championship game Friday night at Arcadia High School.
Doeppel's game-winning hit brought to an end a marvelously played, extra-inning contest that featured at times spectacular pitching and defense by both teams that created missed opportunities.

Spencer Messmore picked up the win after taking over for Ramiro Carreon to start the eighth inning. Carreon scattered seven hits, three of them in the seventh when SGV loaded the bases with one out. Carreon escaped with a strikeout and a pop foul to first baseman Keith Murakami.
Noe Ramirez took the loss, working in relief of Bryce Rutherford, who left after giving up a leadoff single to Eric Smith in the fifth.
SGV grabbed the early lead in the second inning when Tim Smoley reached base on catcher's interference, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Mike Edwards' single.
Arroyo Seco tied it in the fourth when Trevor Gee doubled to right-center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Quintero's infield out.
"There were a few missed opportunities on both sides," Arroyo Seco manager Aaron Milam said. "We talked about a squeeze (bunt in the last inning), but we knew they are very well coached and we've been hitting pretty well.
"The best thing about this game for me is that we (gave up) no walks. I love this game because it was great baseball by both teams."
Doeppel had three hits and Carreon had two of the winner's nine hits. Cody Regis, Ramirez and Edwards each had two of SGV's eight hits.
Arroyo Seco advances to the Pacific Southwest Regional in Watsonville, where it will host Monterey Bay at 8 p.m. in Thursday's first round. The regional runs through July 29.

Me too Mommy, alright now we going to brag about the nieto boys and their playing days...please. I'm sure they already tell their kids war stories. Character is bigger than anything, esp. for a coach and they have none. It's funny, but you talk to a ton of coaches and baseball people and the anger and resentment people have for these two is incredibe. I can care less, I don't have a kid playing now or do I coach now, but these two are ridiculous ego grabbing headaches.

Nieto playing days is not the issue.

I too have known the Nieto Boys for quite some time. although you might not like their antics you can't question their hard work. Andy busted his rear and ended up playing for the best college coach off all time in Augie Garrido. Tony did whatever it took to get his name in the lineup at SC. They do argue way too many calls but at least they're out there fighting for their guys. I would take either one of them to be my son's high school coach.

Joe Velasco,
Why should anyone state their name here when Nieto comes here and doesn't leave his name? Why is it when anyone mentions something about Nieto, the attacks come out on "Dirty Ernie" (don't really care who that is) or other programs. Read the posts buddy, knew the guy (Nieto) as a player (that's going way back) and some things just don't change. He was a snake than and now. I'm not with a high school program, but I have eyes and ears and people know what he's about. So Joe, my pair are hanging out, kinda big today, and proud.
Posted by: Rich | July 28, 2008 3:03 PM
To all you who hide behind your screen name, why don't you grow a pair and state who you are. It's real easy to talk crap about Nieto and not say who you are. I will not believe the things you say until you put your name behind it. If all you are saying is true why do you have to hide behind a screen name. Grow a pair and tell everyone your real name "Dirty Ernie." I think all this talk has to center around one thing JEALOUSY.

Nothing has changed with Nieto. He used USC to supplement his income and now is doing it at Amat.
What a class act LOL

Shamed
Alot of people invovled at SC know Nieto is dirty as they come. I was shocked to learn that Amat hired the guy.
They apparently didnt do enough research prior to his hire.
Too bad, hopefully someone will micro manage him to ensure all funds go to the program at AMAT.
Posted by: Good Luck | July 28, 2008 12:19 PM
Nieto would have garage sale like sales on USC gear that he took from baseball. I also heard about home repairs he would get for football tickets and favors. I was embarrassed for USC to have this guy on staff. Being a USC fan and having this guy involved in the program was hard to take. Word is now that he does all his camps to help supplement his income at Amat. Boycott these camps because your money goes to his pocket, not Amat's programs. Besides, he doesn't know anything about the game, so keep kids away from Amat. You've been warned.

CORRECT.. How about Nieto backing a friend's vehicle that's on film?
Also, he traded USC tickets for home repair servies. Check that one out too!
The guy should be in jail!

Again, I'll ask...isn't this forum about Arroyo Seco? Why so much Nieto talk? Leave the guy alone and let's concentrate on the kids from the Arroyo Seco.
Fred...why does the Glendale News Press cover the Arroyo Seco team right now but the Star News or the Tribune do not?

Nieto was selling football jerseys and nike bats that were owned by USC...he's a snake. ALways been for himself, even tried to have his friends buy free USC football tickets he'd get. This guy is greasy I'm telling you. Wouldn't let my kid near him. Ask him if he's paid his camp instructers yet? Jerk.

It pretty apparent why Nieto ending up at Amat after USC.
No other D1 team would take a chance on this fool.
Ask Andy, how many football jerseys he's sold lately? SC could have hang him out to dry, but elected to say GOOD BYE!

Nieto is a self-promotion egotistical a**. Everything he does is for himself. He'd drive by a friend (if he has any) on the freeway who had car problems and not stop. He will not do anything or take the time to if it doesn't help HIM. Those were Kendrenas boys the last two years winning those championships, don't fool yourself Flat Tire. Every move you make is calculated, what is in it for you is what you think about. Keep it up, run your mouth some more, the Anti-Nieto Team just gets bigger and bigger. Today's trivia, name 5 people in the baseball community that like Nieto? See, it's tough isn't it. Pathetic piece of crap. Knew you as a kid and nothing has changed.
Posted by: NietoSucks | July 25, 2008 8:58 AM
Amat fans,
I was addressing Nieto and it's mistakenly being taken out of context. The Amat kids are really good kids. Sorry for the mistake. What I was saying is that Nieto himself has such nice parents, but their kids are both egotistical a..holes. I stand by that. They are and no doubt about it, Nieto does come on here and post. That's fact.
Posted by: NietoDisappear | July 24, 2008 10:18 PM
Cow,
The Amat kids were called egotistical A..HOLES.
These are kids after all, and for the most part they are at Amat for baseball and the exposure that comes along with it, case in point; Amat had a team in this tournament and no other school did. Say what you will about coach Nieto, but, he does get his teams into tournaments that most other schools can not.
As far as favoritism to the SGV team, they did host the tournament as is the case just about every year, and it is almost a given that they will supply a very good team, so there you go!
Posted by: How Now Brown Cow | July 24, 2008 12:28 PM
First of all Amat does not get any preferential treatment. A team from El Centro dropped out at the last minute so Amat was asked to bring their team to complete the bracket. If Nieto wanted to he could have brought Fox, Mistone, and Reyes since they are age eligible, but he decided to bring his own players to give them some valuable experience. He also allowed Paez and Zuniga to continue to play for the SGV all-star team. The Amat players did a fine job on their parents are very proud of their efforts. The Arroyo Seco team is also an all-star team made up of graduating seniors and also a few Division 1 players who just completed their freshmen year. Coach Torres was given the "A" team and he picked who he thought the best 18 players were that actually played in the Babe Ruth league. Coach Milam from Arroyo Seco did gret job in winning the tournament. As far as Nieto getting on this blog, I'm sure he has a lot better things to do with his time, like get ready for a back to back to back title run.
Posted by: Figure It Out | July 24, 2008 11:59 AM
Wow,
Read the comments below the beloved Flat Tire makes about other coaches and how deragotory they are. Nothing is said about Amat kids at all. They are nice kids. It's Flat Tire and his self-promotion of himself and his coaches. Give it a rest. Read quotes from other coaches in the area through the year and it's praise for their kids and the opposing team, not from Flat Tire, it's always about him. And if you know anything about this tournament, you would know the favortism that was given to the SGV team and Torres and how does any one school (in this case- Amat) get an all star team in the tournament. Why not other schools?
Posted by: Cow | July 24, 2008 10:47 AM
Troy & N.D.,
Why such distain for coach Nieto? You both realize that Arroyo Seco & SG battle it out every year for this tournament title, right?
So, to assume that this tournament is set up so that Arroyo Seco can not possibly win is DUMB. All D.C.O.A. stated was that the team NSGV fielded was young and missing it's two (2)best pitchers, and because this is summer ball the pitchers have limits, whether Amat is winning or losing......so, why all the hostility towards the coaching and KIDS?
Posted by: WOW!!!! | July 24, 2008 6:49 AM
Amazing how Nieto comes on here even in the summer talking his smack. It's so obvious it's you Flat Tire. Making his excuses even in summer ball and telling everyone how NSGV was all "young" Amat players and how they were undefeated blah blah blah. Give it a rest Andy and give the kids some credit. It doesn't always have to be about you and your clipboard. It's a shame, your parents are such nice people, but their kids are complete egotistical a..holes!!! I've known you since your playing days and you've always been this way. Once again, this is Arroyo Seco's turn to bask in the glory of winning a tournament they weren't supposed to win. Let's keep Amat out of this, Arroyo Seco deserves more than this.
Posted by: NietoDisappear | July 23, 2008 6:24 PM
Baseball Fan,
You're right, let's put "Flat Tire Nieto" aside and wish Seco the best of luck. This tournament was set up for SGV or NSGV to win, not Seco and they still came thruogh in the clutch and did it.
Posted by: Troy | July 22, 2008 2:26 PM
Wasn't this blog about the Arroyo Seco team? After all, there's only 1 Amat kid on the Arroyo Seco team and he went to Servite as a junior. There are no Northview kids on the Arroyo Seco team.
Good luck to Arroyo Seco in their upcoming tournament. They're a good team and let's put this NV/Amat thing aside and wish Arroyo Seco the best.
Posted by: Baseball Fan | July 22, 2008 11:43 AM
Crap Happens,
Please do not mistake this past seasons NV team with the team NV will field this coming season, there will be a marked difference.
Pitching is where the game will be won and right now Amat is bringing all of their pitching back plus a couple additional arms that would be at the very least starters if not the ACE at most other schools.
So, please be careful what you wish for!
Posted by: Amat90 | July 22, 2008 11:14 AM
You said NOTHING regarding the "short one". It sounds like coach Beck OR coach Milan should be the head coach since they are the only ones you really SAID anything about! And don't even try to take credit for the old coaches kids! Those guys obviously went to Amat to play for the former coach since they were already there and producing when "dip stick" got there! Lets see what your coach does with HIS boys. Not this years Juniors either because I believe they were already there too. See you in Glendora in 2009.
Posted by: Crap happens | July 22, 2008 10:46 AM
Amat is way better coached than Northview. Murphy couldn't hold Nieto's jock. And don't even try to compare Fat Boy Ernie to Coach Millan. By the way do you guys even have a pitching coach now. I heard he left. Coach Beck is the best in the business. In fact look up which team is in first place and has the lowest ERA in the Cape Cod and you will find that it is the Orleans Cardinals whose pitching coach happens to be Coach Beck. And while your online look up which team is in first place in the Hawaii Collegiate League. To save you the visit it is the Waikiki Surfers whose manager is Coach Millan. Amat coaches do a better job of preparing their players to play at the next level. That's why 4 players from this past year's team will be on Division I rosters.
Posted by: Get real | July 22, 2008 10:10 AM
The only people that think Amat is a well coached team are the brown nosed parents and friends of the coaches. Amat will always fair well because of the talent the attract. I would say recruit but that coach doesn't have that kind of drawing power. As evidenced by all the "high powered" transfers that aren't transfering there. Northview is going to hand you your hats to you again next year at the glendora tournament, if your coach doesn't move you away from the local competition.
Posted by: Crap happens | July 22, 2008 10:02 AM
Best High School Tournament around was played in San Clemente this past weekend. Friends from Northview told me they beat El Toro (Div. 2 CIF Champs) 6-4 and Bishop Gorman 5-3 (Nevada back to back state champs and #4 team in the nation this year) in one day at the tournament. Lost 1 run games to Los Alamitos and Mater Dei. Looks like it should be another good year. Good luck Viking Friends.

Baseball Fan,
You are correct, the Amat team was the NSGV Allstars and yes Garret Tuck from Arcadia HS was on this team, but aside from him there were no other boys from outside of Amat.
You are also correct, in regards to the 1st baseman from Arroyo Seco (Keith "Boomer" Murakami) is a recently graduated senior from Amat, as far as the Arroyo Seco coach, not quite sure. This Amat team is very young, and you observation of Rio Ruiz is spot on he is going to be very, very good.
Congrats to Arroyo Seco, and continued success, bring home the 4th straight Babe Ruth Championship to the SGV.
Posted by: Amat Fan | July 21, 2008 7:56 AM
I saw several of this weeks game. The Amat team is well coached, no doubt about it, but we all knew that. However, I thought that they were called the North San Gabriel Valley Allstar team? Didn't they have Garrett Tuck from Arcadia HS and wasn't he the one who hit a double and score the tying run in the 5th against Arroyo Seco? Just wondering. Again, not taking anything away from Bishop Amat. They are very well coached...and how about that Incoming Freshman Rio Ruiz?....he's going to be great!
Question for any who knows...isn't the Arroyo Seco coach an assistant at Amat, and the 1st baseman a former Amat player? I think I saw that somewhere. If so, that's hilarious...Amat guys on all 3 teams!
Nevertheless...congrats to Arroyo Seco. They seem like they have a great team chemistry. Good luck in the next tournament!
Posted by: Baseball Fan | July 21, 2008 7:27 AM
Don't count out Amat baseball just yet!
Remember, if it was not for summer ball, Nieto would have allowed his starting pitcher "Fitz" to go the rest of the game (60 pitch limit), and all this without the benefit of having his two best starting pitching, BTW you know that Amat was the only other team that was undefeated in this tournament going into Thursday's game, also Arroyo Seco is an ALLSTAR team comprised of boys from many different high schools, while Amat was playing with a few seniors and a bunch of underclassmen all of whom attend Bishop Amat.
Posted by: Don't Count Out Amat! | July 21, 2008 7:06 AM
amat lost to the two top teams in babe ruth. both actually being all star teams full of class of 08 and 09. amat still has all their young guys in and they didnt have zuniga or paez. pretty good without your two top players

Nieto's Amat boys almost beat Arroyo Seco with their 3rd best pitcher
Posted by: ... | July 19, 2008 8:02 PM
Amat's team filled in for the El Centro team that dropped out at the last moment. Paez and Zuniga were on the SGV team. Zuniga actually pitched against his Amat teammates.
Posted by: ok..relax | July 19, 2008 3:22 PM
That's because Bishop Amat's two top pitchers played for San Gabriel Valley. In fact Bishop Amat was knocked out by one of their own on Thursday.

What happened to Nieto's Bishop Amat boys, they didn't even make the finals. See what happens when you go up against real teams
