How safe is the fake stuff?

| | Comments (20) |

I don't know if it's safe, I'm still wondering what too much cell phone use is going to do to me ten or twenty years from now. But I do know this: Don't sneak out in mid-August for a pick-up game on the fake stuff. Not unless you've got a bucket of ice to soak your feet in afterward. Anyone whose played on the stuff knows what I'm talking about. It's like running on hot coals.

Damien High will soon introduce its new synthetic surface, and Bishop Amat is next in line, joining a handful of San Gabriel Valley schools that have switched to the artificial stuff, like West Covina, Baldwin Park, Sierra Vista, La Puente, Rowland with many more to follow. But is the synthetic surface safe? A USA today report earlier this month revealed that three schools in New Jersey closed their facilities, citing health risks related to elevated lead levels. But a story in Market Watch on Thursday gave synthetic surfaces a clean bill of health. The report said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission concluded that young children, as well as athletes that use these fields, are not at risk from exposure to lead in synthetic fields. Despite these findings, a Newsday report this morning still questions the results. What have you heard, and do you have concerns regarding your children using the synthetic fields?

RE: the fake turf (isn't that what we're supposed to be commenting on?)

My son passed out from heat stroke working out on one of these fields. Those little black bits absorb and hold the heat an unbelievably long time and at a really high heat level. In the San Fernando Valley -- several schools have had to turn on the sprinklers regularly during practices to cool down the field surface. (Which is ridiculous because this stuff is chosen to SAVE on water expenses!) On the Calabasas HS field -- where they chose a big black mascot logo on the 50 yard line -- kids have gotten burned!

I think there are significant drawbacks regarding heat, water and athletes over-heating in dangerous life-threatening ways!

nelsonmuntz,
Looks like your the one who needs a clue, the poster's name is below the post not above, WC fan is commenting on West Covina's field not Amats.

WCfan, that's the aquatic center, throw away your master plan it's outdated! You and JoeAmat are clueless. I guess you don't want to trade in that yellow grass for field turf. ha, ha.

amat wont win for 20 years said:

maybe 20 years down the road amat will get a new stadium. maybe by that time their football team will have a winning season again

only in the summer said:

why be worried about the heat element when the football season is played in mostly cool weather. The only time this should be an issue is during the summer training

Damien had to do something.

Unless God Almighty made it rain, no way else did that football field get any water.

Baseball Rules Amat said:

Amat needs to build a new state of the art Baseball field. Remember that is Amats sport now, not football. I guess Amat has it all backwards. "If you build it they will come"...To see that sorry a-- football program...that is a baseball slogan ..built a diamond screw the football field....

Theres nothing like playing on grass. However the 3 schools Ive seen with turf (Bonita, BP, and LP)look amazing. BP's field/stadium is top notch. I wish San Dimas would upgrade.

GO SAINTS!!!

A coach at WC told me they really liked it. They were extremely healthy last year compared to previous seasons (Muscle pulls, knees, and ankles.) Was it warm, yeah, but it was way better than the pothole ridden, unmaintained field they used to have. He said they would rather have a well maintained grass field than turf, but there was no way it would be well maintained.

Joe,
According to my copy of the layout, they show a building the same color code as the Activity Center in the area of the Home Stands and Dugout, this would be right behind the new stadium. Maybe these are the new locker room.

I wonder where the Visitors would go at half time, the old Keifer/Tate Duff house? hahahaha (not really, that's not on the plan)

Don't worry JoeAmat it won't be your dollar you cheap sob. BTW he'll be around for the next 7 years...or maybe you haven't heard, not quite the Amat insider are U.

Ya know, screw it. Let's just wrap all these kids up in bubble wrap and let them go at it. God forbid if someone stubbed a toe.

Have you actually walked on Amats fields? That loud mouth fireman who takes care of the fields at Amat is a joke, they need field turf!!

FredJ said:

That depends on the field? Covina District is normally in good shape, but you know there are some rock hard surfaces that aren't taken care of very well.

Grass is my pick. said:

Fred:

Personally I would rather play on grass than turf.

Know the economics in the long run, but grass is just better on the body..

BB&G,

Very true. The stadium move is a pretty ambitious project and I'll bet a dollar that it doesn't happen the way it is presently proposed. A bunch of push back and some redesign options that make little sense. Another blunder by MSGr, but we only have to deal with that for a year or two-then common sense will prevail.

The diocese *forced* him to come up with a composite master plan in order to approve Phase 1 because so many projects during his tenure have been band-aids. Had a "master plan" been in place the beautiful Student Activity Center could have been part of the reconfiguration and we could have had an athletic complex that would make sense. Unless they duplicate locker and training facilities into the new stadium, athletes, coaches and trainers will have to walk across campus to get to and from the facilities

Fred,

Our new stadium is part of the overall remodeling and rebuilding of the school. Since these improvements will take place in phases, the stadium is in the 4th phase of the project. By the time that happens we could all be in the ground by that time and not live to see it.

In the meantime, I'll take green grass ANYDAY.

FredJ said:

Well, maybe I jumped the gun, they're in line for a new stadium adjacent to Orange Ave., and I'm guessing they will use the artificial stuff like everyone else. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Fred

Would like to know - according to who at Bishop Amat - are they "next in line" for field turf?
