FBFan,
The Smudgepot game is always one of the best games of the season, regardless of the strength of each team. Both know the meaning and play hard. As for Bonita, they lost ONE of their top players! Jio the golden boy, knows baseball is his ticket. If he could, he'd play. Two other players from last season, quit! None of which played with this team as Freshman and they lost only one game. They still have talent and of course they will be under sized as always. They look very good in the passing game and that is always one of the strong points for Bonita. Podley will have them playing hard like they always do.
1. Bishop Amat vs. St. Paul- This rivalry goes way back and they have had some major battles and played in some very meaningful games. Always a close game despite Amat's recent struggles and St. Paul's championship.
2. Charter Oak vs. Los Altos- Even though this one will be one sided for the next few years they were the top teams in their division in the late 90s and early 200s.
3. Damien vs. Glendora- Always a top game for Sierra League bragging rights.
4. Northview vs. Covina- These teams HATE each other and the Colts would love to knock of NView this year
5. San Dimas vs. Bonita- Fans have to get to the game 2 hours before just to get in. The rivalry just got bigger since SD's Def. Cordnator left for Bonita.
As far as Bonita is concerned, I don't see them being that great. They did make the semis in the tournament, but struggled on defense from what I saw against Upland. I talked to a parent adn two of their top players from last year quit to focus on baseball. San Dimas should easily win the Smudgepot again. They have a ton of talent, but I'm sure the Bearcats won't rollover.
how do u guys think bonita gonna do this year i personally feel this is one of the best teams they have had in a while and might be better than the 2004 team that won league and how do u guys think SD is going to do and who do u think wil win the smudgepot SD at Bonita
yeah but yeah i want to hear the sgv feelings on these subjects so please respond
You don't need "game breakers" every year to be successful. You just need a real program. The problem with the SGV is there real programs are few and far between. Your example of how Los Altos fell apart after three injuries is a reflection on the program. Gano is a softball coach and knows nothing about football so like softball is he has players he wins, when he doesn't he loses. Might as well have a damn scarecrow out there because he is useless.
The real reasons the SGV doesn't have an elite program LAZY COACHES i.e. L.A., B.A. (last few years), South Hills, Charter Oak. Or idiotic coaches i.e. Diamond Ranch, Wilson, Sierra Vista.
Anonymous must be all the suggestions Mike The Cone made to Coach P. On the other hand it just might be that Coach P was a very good coach all a long and the best advice he ever took from Mike the Clone was N.O.N.E.
i was at the south hills passing league yesterday and wow! does the hillz look awesome. they look so smooth almost like a college team running the spred offensive with deen absolutly dominating defenses with umodu, vaughns, and roddy this looks like a very fun team to go and watch.
when i saw this team play i said to my self they had at least 3 D-1 SIGNEES. deen.umodu.vaughns. does anyone know where deen is headed since he is the only senior of that group. when i was there yesterday i heard some grumbling of him goin to UW? any news on that? and how about mr wells? how is he doin? anyways shhs" the hillz" look out, and i dont even like south hills!!!!
You may remember the first blow in that L O vs C O contest was struck by a Los Osos LB on a play across the middle; a cheap shot that upended a C O receiver. I commented at the time, “don't worry, Lou won't let that slide”. He didn't. Two series later, a C O DB trashed a Grizzly WR on a sideline pass. That, as they say, ended that. Too bad what should be a contest of finesse turns into a micturating match.
I agree the hitting gets too intense for the unpadded “passing league” play and it is clearly encouraged by some of the coaches who don't seem to worry much about head or neck injuries. Upland was brutal in the Air Assault tourney; despite having one of the best QB's in the southland, they went back time and again to the intimidation type game the D1 schools seem to favor. Didn't work though when Bonita took them out in the quarters with a triple OT win, (the highest finish of any local school).
Passing league games! I've been to several of these games, and these players are getting hurt! If they're going to play that physical, why don't they wear some gear!
These players are playing at full speed and hitting hard after they catch the ball.
Last week at Bonita's passing league game, the top receiver from AZUSA,got a concussion on the very first play of the game.
Why would you want to risk an injury before the season even started! Don't make no sense!
The game between Charter Oak and Los Osos was so intense, that they should have just had their full gear on that day!I guess both teams wanted to prove something, and players were getting layed out!
My suggestion is why not play with flags??? It's not worth getting injured, before the season starts!
At the passing league games last week I got into a discussion with a friend over what sets the “big name” programs apart from the likes of what most High School fans follow. Sort of “what's so different between Mater Dei and Baldwin Park?” I came up with a couple of obvious answers but I would be interested in other takes as well..
Depth: Injuries to key players hurt everyone, but a school with only 35-40 kids out are decimated when a starter goes down due to injury, grades, or diminished interest. Ask Greg Gano what losing three guys did to his season last year, (and that at a solid local program).
Focus: How many two-sport (non-track guys) athletes play Football at Edison? Poly? Los Alamitos? What local school DOESN'T have two or three starters that also play BB, Soccer, or Basketball?
Depth ll: How many two way starters does El Dorado have? 2? How many at your local school? 4, 5, 6, 7? As much heart, toughness, and conditioning as these kids have, playing 35-40 minutes week in and week out wears them down. The Hart's and the St. Bonnie's get stronger as they close out the season, the Wilson's and the Covina's get thinner. The very best schools rotate 25-30 kids every game and as soon as they get a lead bring in the reserves and Sophomores.
Size: Is it the water? The breeding stock? Last season 37% of the Long Beach Poly team was listed at over 200 pounds, Bonita was about 27%. HALF of La Habra's Varsity weighed out at over 200 pounds last season. Surprised that LH went 13-0 in 2007?
The last point is the issue of the frequency a program turns up a true “game breaker”; a kid who can come in on Friday night and seemingly beat anyone by himself. The “great” programs seem to have them every season, true here, in our dominant programs like South Hills or C O, (Snowden leaves, Muema arrives). At Mater Dei and Mission Viejo it is usually a QB, (yeah, I know, a coincidence) , and Servite likes to send USC D1 ready LB's; somewhere else, it might be running backs. Here in the Valley, we need to be happy with a star every decade or so. I hope San Dimas enjoys Nico Barbone, because they won't see the likes of him again soon, (remember DeAndre Belin?).

Glendora is looking good.
The qb is looking awesome threw amazing against A.B Miller and Valencia at the Bonita tournament.
even saw him playing defense looked pretty good
sophomore qb looked a little shakey when started out but looked great. when he's done he will go to a d-1 for sure
defense stacked with chad young and villa at lb
Glendora will have 3 stud rb's with Andre, Dewani, and Demetrius
we'll have to see how the linemen are they have an amazingly athetic tackle cody tescher this kid will excell at a d-1 college
this year will be great won't be surprised if go 9-1 or 8-2 and possibly win CIF
