Prep football a month away ....
This was the 2007 cover shot, any thoughts on what we should do for 2008?

Now that I'm back from vacation, it's time to start planning for the Fall Football preview tab. Normally we have a big cover story, column, league and team-by-team breakdown, but I would like to add more to it this year. We're thinking of doing top ten's at each position, and a few feature strories, but I'm listening to anything else you suggest to make it even better. For instance, any features you think we should be working on. I'll be sitting with Stevie R., in the next few days to go over all the plans, so feel free to leave comments. Finally, the prep season is just a month away.....
Breaking news: Just had a quick meeting with Managing Editor Steve Hunt, who is concerned that our preview tab could be scratched at the last minute because lets face it, these are tough economic times and we're having trouble selling ads. Now, this is a last resort and what it would mean is running daily previews in our regular section leading up to the zero week games. Nobody wants it to come to that, and just like you, I want the tab because it has everything and it's a great memorabilia section. What I've suggested is that I meet with our ad director in the coming days about the possibility of "Best Wishes Player Pages," which is similar to a program or yearbook where parents can buy a small ad with a picture of their son and a best wishes note on the season. Hopefully if enough parents participate, we can fill up pages and get this tab out. And obviously, any local business can purchase ads, so get in touch with our ad department if you're interested. If I learn that any of this is possible, I'll post all the information to make it happen. But I would love your thoughts on these suggestions. Again, it might never come to this, but I would love to have a back-up plan in place in case it does.
2008 football schedules
These schedules are from CalPreps, which are much easier to read and follow than MaxPreps. CalPreps has added a preview feature next to the team, which gives some insight and info into each team. Great stuff!

Let me ask you this if a team is 10-0-0 two years straight doest that automaticlly state they will be 10-0-0 the next year as well?? Nope sure doesnt the past doesnt dictate the future.. I will say this keep feeding them just keep feeding them..

Prove something, WIN something, then pop off.
Layton you're still a loser.
Posted by: DR WHO? | August 1, 2008 12:01 PM
Blah blah blah. A win is a win and a forfeit is a forfeit no S:;t surelock and a record is just a record and shows only what you've done In the past not what you are gonna do in the future.. And showing how much Dismond ranch wins by is stupid its not even an argument. All your doing is really showing what kind of class the coach has by not running up the score unlike other schools when Dr first came out and wiped them out in first year varsity come on..

A win is a win and a FORFEIT is a FORFEIT because of your cheating coach.
Better check the REAL record from last year and the past years. 19-25-1 you dumba--.
Win then talk you loser..

come on Diamond Ranch Game of the week Every week let's give this blog and its readers what its craveing for.. Since all they want to do is talk about them I say we give them what that want..
Posted by: Dark P | July 31, 2008 8:55 PM
We did "Dr.WHO" (are you anyways). We went 7-3 last year..lets not look at the forfeits..JV went undefeated, Freshamn went 7-2-1....Anything else, Dr.WHO R U anyway?

I believe that Diamond Ranch is looking forward to taking revenge on Los Altos beating them all these years. They are going to take advantage that Los Altos does not have a very good team this year and roll over them just as Charter Oak, Wilson, and every other team that Los Altos is scheduled to play.

You need to come up with something better..
Likes some wins, or a league title. Your pre-season schedule doesn't means s--- if you STILL can't win league..
Next?

LoL...ruffled some sgv parent feathers huh. I wonder it that is actually you Gano. Speak up, be a man. We all know that you have nothing but time now. Is that all of the fire power you have? The Charter Oak Game?? Geez...
Come with something better...

FJR,
You get a C on your preseason game picks.
Sept. 5 - Bonita at Covina - I admire the Colt kids and fans but save your money. Amat and Los Osos will be a much better game.
Sept. 12 - San Dimas at South El Monte – Likely another rout, instead go see Glendora and Upland replay last season's round one whammer jammer.
Sept. 19 - West Covina at Bishop Amat – This one will be fun although I'll be at the South Hills/La Habra contest.
Sept. 26 - South Hills at Duarte – You can call this one the City of we Hope we can score tonight; the Damien/Amat game is the one to see.
Oct. 3 - Charter Oak at Damien – Another good pick, enjoy the new field. Forget South Hills against Northview; the last time Vikings got whipped this bad was in Ireland about 1000 years ago.
Oct. 10 - Diamond Ranch at Bishop Amat will be a jim-dandy barn burner, but it's not the Smudge Pot. Get smudged, you'll like it.
Oct. 17 - Bishop Amat at St. Francis – Drive to La Canada? Not. Go see who wins the Miramonte in 2008, Diamond Ranch at Charter Oak.
Oct. 24 - Glendora at Damien – Good choice
Oct. 21 - Diamond Ranch at Los Altos – (It's really the 31st), Of interest only if you have a kid on the DR JV Team and come to see him letter. Better to stay home and watch Servite and OH! Lu on FSN.
Nov. 13 - Charter Oak at Bonita; South Hills at West Covina – Probably pride only games but either one is worth the time.

A Win is a win but you were making fun of them and calling them crappy programs but you barely beat them. And, I might add Leach has been a whole lot more successful than Layton. Believe me, I will never give Leach or Rice any credit unless they deserve it and that is hard for me to do but they both coached there before Layton. They had more success than him while they were there and have had more since they left. I don't recall Colony getting beat 48-7 by Charter Oak. In fact I know it would not happen.
If I lost to anybody 48-7 I would just keep my mouth shut and wait till next year. But I have seen you guys in action. Cheap shots and coaches M-Fing the players during post passing game talks in front of every body. That is why people think your program has no class and that my friend starts with the head man.

Please realize that Coach Layton himself has and probably is posting again on this blog himself under fictitious names. How soon everyone forgets our game versus them last year and the coaches and players unsportsmanlikeship. Regardless of your schedule and then your record nothing will ever change if the conversation was about attitude and character of the team. So win your games but like Colony in the Finals you still are always going to be tainted by your reputation. Ask Coach Gano how he feels and what he thinks of Diamond Ranch. I can still hear him saying..! Now let's wait and observe how "DRanchhhh" responds to this post.

Posted by: M.B. | July 31, 2008 9:36 AM
Let me ask you "Columbo" (i.e. researcher), Was Roddy Layton Head coach back then ass munch? Haa!! Didn't think so!! And according to your "stats" We WON....a win is a win no matter how you look at it. Like I said, none of these teams have scheduled power programs. This is why most of our schools get to the 1st, 2nd round of the CIF brackets and lose. With the exception of Colony and The big dogs at Corona Centennial, who has brought a legitimate CIF title back to the SGV or the IE? And hail even Colony had a weak schedule..Its too bad everybody wants to look good against the "ok" programs. Play the big boys and see how competitive we can make the SGV. I sit and read these post all of the time. When we start booking teams like OLU, Mater Dei, Dorsey, Dominguez, Birmingham, RSM etc. then brag about what we have here. This is why layton is going to be legendary when it is all said and done. Who else is doing this. All of you people say is Layton is dumb, stupid, but guess what LAYTON believes in his stable. He knows, and convinces his boys that they are not "average" or "OK" young men.
Posted by: DRanchhhh | July 31, 2008 9:35 AM
Overall record for the program from 2004 - present is 19-25-1. And 9 of those wins came in one season. If I am not mistaken the school has only had two season above .500 (2004, 2001).
Posted by: In addition.... | July 31, 2008 9:04 AM
DRanchh - I just did some research. If I were you I would not brag too much. 2004
Dr 21 Ontario 10, D Ranch 20 Montclair 10.
That was the best year in program history BTW. 2005 - Dr 14 Ontario 7. DR 19 Montclair 7.

NO football preview? Say it aint so Fred! I guess it's a sign of the times but it could have been avoided. The Times cut their prep staff, the Trib has done the same and why? No ads to cover the costs? Not enough subscriptions? I am sure that most of the blame will be put on the internet but I don't believe that there is not a place for hard copy newsprint. The biggest problem has been the fact that the majority of newspapers have been shoving down our throats what they want us to read. Come on, do the math. What threads blow up on your blog? Volleyball, badmiton, water polo, tennis? NOT. Take today's paper for example, who really cares about a practice facilty for water polo in Bejing or what the Yankees are doing roster wise? This is SoCAl, that space could have been used for pre season high school football news. Too much AP wire stuff from places that most of us don't really give a rats a@# about. Go back to Steve Hunt and remind him what the name of the paper is "San Gaberiel Valley Tribue" and people in the SGV want to know what's going on in the SGV! Get back to the roots of the SGV Tribune and there won't be any problem selling ads or papers!

I say...all of the Miramonte league teams need to grow some balls and play some teams that matter...Hail, if thas the case Roddy Layton should schedule in Montclair, Ontario, Pomona, Garey, Diamond Bar etc. (Which BTW are all schools that turned down the invite) and say we are the world Champions...Come CO, ALiso Niguel?? Bonita, Claremont?? Los Altos, Ayala?..Hail u guy only have 2 competitive teams including DR that u play. Pathetic...Man up then call yourselves good!!

Would be a tough list, because I dont think there a best in August.. Maybe after the playoffs are over.
How do you pick from Deen, Allen, Paradez, or Garay?
OR
Gilmore, Barbone
All these guys are big impact guys for there teams.
Could get real crazy going thru all the impact guys.
Maybe a feature on impact
teams with real hopes of bring home a SGV ring..
Calpreps is breaking down some real predictions..

Fred,
Give Maggiore a call: His kicker Thomas Flores may be better than David Caylor was (Edgewood 84')
Jeremy Brown (Los Altos) gets a lot of "attention", and it is well deserved.
Recently, Flores was asked by USC to stay "extra hours" at thier camp... to kick in front of the USC Staff.

Fred,
I changed my mind for receiver.
Sounds great but don't forget the Kicker.
QB Cameron Deen(South Hills)
RB Tim Gilmore (Wilson)
WR Taylor Herrera(South Hills)

I'd rather have a cover story on players, but a feature story on the coaching changes is a good idea.

Fred,
There has been alot of coaching changes in San Gabriel Valley. How about cover page with all the new head coaches for this year.
Posted by: popsonac | July 30, 2008 10:48 AM
The suggestion about the good wishes page is good. Make sure someone contacts each school AD maybe with a flyer they can get out to their football programs. It is a great section that we look forward to.
Posted by: football is back part 2 | July 30, 2008 10:30 AM
Put the top 5-7 players in the SGV. We will know who they are and can follow them and their teams throughout the season. More broader than one position.
Posted by: football is back | July 30, 2008 10:28 AM
Fred, Have the QB's up there this year in the photo shoot. Also suggest and pick out each teams three biggest opponents on their schedule. (this includes non league opponents as well)
Posted by: Bring it! | July 30, 2008 9:58 AM
Fred:
Personally I enjoy the team breakdown. Its a great update before season kicks off and is enjoyable to read about other programs.
The cover shot is a tough call, but last year feature some great athletes in the SGV.
