Breaking News: Colts lose Root and Merrill

Covina high co-head baseball coaches Scott Root and Ryan Merrill have both resigned. Root left in June and Merrill recently told athletic director Darryl Thomas that he will not be back, leaving one of the valley's premiere baseball programs searching for a successor. Those interested should contact Thomas at the school.

Comments

the smart person who said andy nieto is a great coach is mentally ill because if he was a d-1 coach then he should not get out choached by northview wich he did & can call our coaches wetbacks alllll he wants but in the end he is just northview will always send his ass back 2bishop amat with a big fat LOSS!

why can't we talk football?
Baseball is over.

i dont know why anyone is thinking covina would actually give the head coaching position to a freshman coach from last year. if anyone saw him coach or try too, they would know he is not the answer. i heard from many different parents of last years freshman team that he was thrown out of two of their games last year. i guess you could call him the Bobby Cox of the covina high baseball organization. although if this is true you should give the coach some props for carring enough at the freashman level. maybe this would be a good thing for covina. get a little fire in their backsides!!!

root neds to go back to answering the phones at the trib desk

kegomez

Barnes is back at Mt Sac

I think all those names are good. But the best young candidate would be George Barnes. He currently is the pitching coach at Chaffey and spends his summer coaching at the Cape Cod College league.

Charley Beal is not the answer

I heard covina is going to hire back a previous coach. i wonder what covina is going tou-pee him?

I heard Covina also thought about bringing back a previous coach. I wonder what he asked Covina TOU-PEE him?

who is this freshman coach?

Please no freshmen coaches. They don't know how to run a program. This is not youth ball, which is what freshmen coaches are.

YES---BRING LAST YEAR'S FRESHMAN COACH BACK - GIVE HIM A CHANCE. HE KNOWS THE SYSTEM, KNOWS THE ADMINISTRATION. COME ON GUYS, DO THE RIGHT THING.

Jesus might be too busy...and I hear he's waiting for the Catholic school Amat job anyway!:?)

So I guess it could be Willie!

what about Mark Rigney...i heard stories of that guy!

Nut 2,

Wow, your admiration for Remkus is unbelievable. Almost wonder if Remkus himself is throwing you a few bones to post your love. Players have a lot to do with success of a program and although Gladstone is not a place with much talent anymore (they did have some back in the day, not just Remkus who helped win) but it's a crappy league and he couldn't muster much last few years where a supercoach can or should get in the playoffs in that league don't you think? Staring Northview down and not blinking and taking over the league in no time? Relax Nut 2, no one going to play dumb staredown games and win against Northview or San Dimas. When Northview doesn't win the league, it will be because someone else has much better talent (which can happen one day) because you won't intimidate or outcoach NV's staff. Northview has won that league with less talent than Covina and San Dimas in the past and now winning with great talent. They've swallowed up much bigger fish in the sea than Gladstone. Staredowns? What is this the wild west?

you know i hear a lot of really great names being thrown around on this blog, but there is one that is missing. i know he is currently looking for a head coaching job and has major league experience. his name... Willie Randolph!!! i mean besides him and jesus you guys have pretty much stated every coach in the SGV. from what i hear covina is possibly looking at last years freshman baseball coach. supposedly covina wants to hire a coach for the very long term, and given this coahes young age this problem wont arise again for a very long time.

Well my sources tell me that Covina is only offering 7 years on transfer teachers. Therefore it looks as if any stud established coach is not going there. Source Could be wrong but I doubt it as he is usually right on the money. Something about the City is in lots of $$$ trouble

You would think Covina has to be close to a decision with school right around the corner. Any updates on this subject.

In response to the so called know it all. I am very aware of how Districts Pay and the pay scale and the actual years that are standard for Covina District. If you read my post carefully I never once said "special Perks" all I said is Covina would be wise in trying to open up there wallets and get Remkus. Now as to your comments regarding NV etc. Nobody takes away anything they did or have done, where did it say in my post that they stunk etc. But I would be placing my money on Covina and Remkus to take over that league and unseat NV very quickly IMO. Now does Covina want a proven stud? Only time will tell if the District will pay. But just a side note for all you naysayers or so called District Pay Experts. Covina District has offered up above and beyond regular years of service for more then one coach in the past. Lets hope Covina go's after Remkus or someone like that, imagine the battles in that league. He would stare NV Down and would not blink a minute. It would be fun.

Parisi you have to be kidding me guy. The cheating crack head! That was a joke right. The only reason he got that job was cause no one else wanted it.

Parisi! Classic. Who's interviewing for this, and quit "throwing" names out like you know. Hard facts or don't respond. Tired of all this blah blah blah stuff. Out.

Everyone is still missing the best available name in the valley!

Darryl, do some homework!

Parisi -- are you friggen kidding me????? Now we can really throw down about illegal activity and corruption. There is no way Covina admin. would approva of him as qualified coaching material. Are you "on" some of the very stuff he was selling?

I'm pretty sure Covina won't be buying what Parisi's selling... if you get my drift.

While some of that might be in the past, Parisi was heavily involved in the Scott Spezio incident this past spring that essentially ended Spezios career. Given Spezios history with controlled substances and Parisi's continued relationship with him... I wonder how much is really behind him.

That's the best one I've heard yet - Mike Parisi. Then our kids can not only learn baseball, but also some of the "finer" things in life. Like what it feels like to be arrested for drug possession and spend time in jail. Yep, that's definitely what I want for my kid.

If Covina wants to win, they should look into former Arcadia coach Mike Parisi, who is now at Pasadena. He's got a lot of baggage having being fired at Arcadia, but he knows the area, played at Fullerton and knows what to do with talent.

Baseball Nut II or more like Baseball Nutjob when you say how Covina would be on top of the VVL in no time and in running for CIF Championships yearly...Come on dude, for one, the league is Northview's right now, they've won it 3 times in a row and should win it again for a 4th next year. I'm not a Northview parent or alumni, but props go out to the men in black and gold right now. They are the champs and Remkus isn't tearing down that reign in no time like you say. I'll give you this, Remkus is good, could be on his last leg though, and this could be big task for a guy at his stage of his career. With that, what is districts willing to pay and fork out to get him? This isn't college or pro ball where negociations take place on pay. Scale is set by district, might get a perk or two from school, but not big time stuff. What does the other two head coaches get than from the district? One from SH is winning his league yearly and was in the finals this year and the Northview coach is coach of the year, cif champions, won league 3 times in a row and #1 or #2 in the valley last two years? See what I'm saying, there is no extra perks Remkus would get to come. From what I think, he's not even on covina's radar.

What people fail to understand is how a school districts pay scale works. When experienced teachers leave districts they tend to take a huge pay cut because most districts only give 10 years of experience.

Schools will rarely match salaries - heck districts are trying to get guys like Remkus to take the Golden Watch and go fishing so they can pay some kid right out of student teaching pennies and save some money.

Guys like Remkus would need to go so far down on the pay scale it would make no sense-even if "coaching wise" it might be a great move.

Why wouldnt you invest in Remkus? The guy is a proven winner since like forever. The last 2 coaches at Covina lasted how long? Thats my point. Go get the best and hold your head high. Remkus would be there till the end if he got that job, Covina would on top of the VVL in no time..You would easily get 10 years out of him, in those ten years I bet you get 1 or 2 CIF Championships and countless trips to the Semi's etc... Just my thoughts.

Should Covina really "invest" in Remkus?? How much coaching time does he have left?? I do not like Nicholls or the Wilson coach, so I am still searching for what I think would be a perfect fit for Covina. Northview and Covina have always had great baseball programs and have done the city proud. It would be nice to see covina back in the swing of things - souldn't resist the pun...

LOL.. Sorry OG Baseball Nut. I didnt know you had the name. Thanks for the comments, I too think Merrill and Root did a good job but I think with the kids you get today and whats at stake there is no reson Covina should not go get the best out there. I bet if Covina came calling Remkus would jump on it if the money was close. People have to rmemeber here, Covina has always been a baseball school. If Remkus was hired they would matter instantly and would be a serious contender for League and CIF Title yearly. Covina owes it to themselves to check him out, "Are you listeing COVINA" Go get him. Those kids would never run a muck off or on the field if Remkus coached them.

I sure hope they at least contact him, as I would love to see Covina just blow by these other programs. With Remkus at the helm thats a very strong possibility.

thanks

Excellent observations/comments from both Baseball Nuts. Everyone keeps saying, "Go get Remkus." But no one has said whether he even wants the job or not. And Covina sure isn't going to "open up their wallets" for baseball, that's for sure. Now, if it was football.......

The one and only baseball nut is ME! If you look at the jan 2008 blog I made the top ten list and fred posted it because it was good and credible. Anyone posting as BASEBALL NUT is a cheap imitation and should not be believed. LOL . Many good points from B nut II, however a few things that are simply not true. Covina baseball does matter and merrill and root did a GREAT job in my humble opinion. The demographics and disposition of the team is not to be blamed on the coach. I liked these core group of kids from the last two years, i.e gomez, hansen, floch, delinges, ty pill, severin, waterbury, wilson, valuenzuela, j smith but they were a pretty rambunctious group on and off the field. That is not the coaches fault! He cannot babysit them 24/7. As far as teaching and managing the game also high marks, the colts were not insignificant, they play in a very tough VVL and I dont like the picture of Merrill that keeps circulating of him shouting at J smith. I t is so out of character and he usually is soft spoken and commands respect. He just doesnt yell like most coaches. Root taught my kid more about being a good defensive player in four months than any other coach, (including myself), has in his entire baseball life. If anyone is thinking of hiring these two coaches with great pedigress I would not hesitate. I think I have a unique perspective to comment on the covina job, I worked there for almost ten years, I know merrill and ad thomas pretty well and as b-nut II said smitty would be a terrible choice. I know nicols and while he personally has been very nice to me and my son I dont think he would be a good fit. I dont think he is a teacher and they need an on campus coach. Covina has never been too keen on off campus coaches, and for good reason. That leaves remkus and the other deryl thomas, spelled differently than the ad. I think either would be a good choice but I dont think Thomas has a teaching credential. So that leaves remkus. Baseball nut the original and b nut II are in agreement, get remkus. One more thing before I finish, thanks Scott Root and Ryan Merrill I think you did a great job and we came pretty close. It is easy for people to say well they did not do this or did not do that but the teams we had to play were DAMN GOOD. Northview, Charter Oak, Cat City, San Dimas, Los osos, Monrovia. Good luck co coaches I am sure you will land on your feet wherever you end up.

Here are a few of my comments and observations regarding the Covina job. Please just read them and im sure you will have your own thoughts as well. I have been coaching and following baseball in this Valley for over 15 years and Covina needs someone who will take names and kick arse, if you know what I mean. Covina should be winning alot more with that talent.

Seems as if Covina has had some issues the last few years with Players, Disciplne, lack of support etc. It all starts with the Head Coach or coach's. Covina has always been laid back in that matter, and they need a good awaking. Few comments about some of the people mentioned for the job. Smitty should never get this job as he has under performed for years over at that other school, in fact I would say he has been the reason they fade not the kids. He should feel lucky as he got lucky to get that job in the first place, as the #1 Candidate who was offered the job was out of town and didnt know for 2 weeks that he was offered the job. Viera and Quinly are off campus, so that leaves them out, The Wilson guy just doesnt have enough experience IMO and Covina cant wait to find out if he can handle the heat. The Hollenbeck coach I personally do not know, but from talking w people that do know him say he is a good coach but to close to other parents and cannot seperate coaching and being friends so he is not ready. To me that only leaves one guy that can outcoach any one in this Valley and has done so for countless years with far less talent then he would ever see at Covina.

Here is my 2 cents Covina if you are listening. Break out your wallet and go get Remkus like today. If you want to matter in baseball again! In this Valley and beyond thats wear my money would be placed. He instantly would put a stop to parent snoozing, that team would be disciplined, in shape, respectful, and they would be learning to play baseball the right way. Has anyone seen Remkus's baseball field? Those kids will know pride and it will show by the way they play. Covina overnight would matter in the SGV and trust me, nobody I mean nobody would want to play a Remkus team that had the talent pool that Covina can and would get, as those teams know there in for a dogfight no matter what. Also a side note, every other coach in Covina's League would be worried and wondering about them instantly.

So Covina if you are out there and I know you are I say go get Remkus and matter again. Its plain and simple, if you want the best, well there he is staring you in the face, so open up your wallets and pay for a proven winner, go get a coach who will instantly change Covina High Baseball and who will make sure that your school will play 100% no matter what or who they play.

Hire bozo the clown. perfect choice

AC

Baseball knowledge = Yes

Coaching Experience = ?

Teaching Credential = ?

I heard that X dodger Derrel Thomas 15 year pro (not the AD/football coach) is interested in the position. He is currently a Houston Astros scout and would bring plenty baseball knowledge and exp to Covina.

Hell to the No is the Wilson coach qualified. They stunk up our league big time this year and he is just weak, can't get anything out of the kids they had. CO win was pure luck and we are still embarrased by it. loaiza really has no qualifications and would not bring anything to the Covina program. We would miss the easy wins, yea i know YOU BEAT US ONE TIME. Get over it, it was a fluke.

covina would be lucky to get Mike Solar,
ran a very good program at los altos then took st. francis to cif finals, runs a good - tight no - nonesense program.my son was lucky to play for him,my son was coaching the freshman team, was playing for the championshion, and coach solar can fron the valley to watch and support his former player, something i and my son will never forget. p.s. they won

There is NO way that anyone that is not a teacher is going to get this job. Nichols, Viera....OUT!!! That is why the district attached a teaching job with the coaching position. Remkus is not going to Covina. He would definitely take a hugh pay cut to change districts so late in his career and is a handful of years away from retiring anyway. I have no idea who is going to get this job, but i dont think it will be Smith and Remkus probably doesnt know that Covina is looking for a coach. The other two...well, enough said. The bottom line is we need a good "person" who knows how to coach and treat people right.

Just the fact that you have mentioned there even being a difference between little league moms and dads vs. delicate nuances of high school sports proves your ignorance. Lets see -- 1st. parents meeting at Hollenbeck, practices T&Th at 6:00, and who wants to be team mom/dad???? VS.... what? Kevin has missed science 3 days in a row and we suspect abuse in the family - so he will be put on academic probabtion......what can I do to help? YEAH DN - your right it is kind of the same thing. Coaching at the High School levels is so much more complicated nowadays - somewhere along the way - you hope it actually gets back to coaching. Nichols has NOTHING to do with the schools or the ADMINISTRATIONS. You need to be connected to a school and HOLLENBECK IS NOT NEARLY THE SAME. but I bet he still does check out the hot mamas... Nice bridge by the way.

grow up = smith himself.. mighty defensive dude. hey pardon the pun but you made your bed now lie in it. If it were only that issue I wouldn't give two rat's a$$es about Smith, but let's talk about all his shenanigans in the coaching field. All his "legit" transfers and how 'the people" love him. Really Sith -- you want to go there??? Or is it Mrs. K.??? Smith would be horrible for Covina for much more then the reasons mentioned before - but it does make for good reading. NO ONE comments???? are you kidding me - whenever there is a rant about YOU and it's a few times a season -- your "troubled" personal life always finds it's miserable way in...and shame on you is all I will say. Grow Up, ok I'll take that, but how you MAN UP....AND ACT LIKE A DECENT, RESPECTABLE MAN.

isn't "the best coach at Hollenbeck" like calling someone the "cutest girl at fat-camp"?

How come no one has mentioned Mike Viera of the SGV Arsenal? He runs the best program in the San Gabriel Valley.

just some thoughts on the coach....

you are a punk and a coward whether you're a man or a woman.

talking about someone's marriage or the complexities of adult life in a open forum is disgraceful.

maybe you will someday experience the same situation in your life and it will allow you to keep your mouth shut about private matters that don't concern you.

mc cain was pursuing a barely legal aged girl while still married with kids and yet he's running for President in spite of what he considers his "greatest moral failure"....GROW THE FYCK UP!

It's the second or third time you've mentioned this on the blog.....EVERY TIME EVERY ONE HAS IGNORED YOU AND THOSE TASTELESS COMMENTS...EVERY TIME!!!!

Karma is a B&TCH....with ANY luck you'll be on the receiving end of a bad situation someday and the only thing you'll realize is ....never mind scum like you never get it anyway.

MAKING FUN OF PEOPLE'S MISERY IS NOT COOL. WHAT YOU NEED IS A FOOT UP YOUR A$$ AND A SET OF NUTS TO GET THRU LIFE.

Those last 2 bloggers are either the same idiot or sit together at Hollenback and complain and complain and complain and every once in a while check out the hot moms there...and then go back to lousy stories about their lousy wives, I mean lives.

Nichols is a hell of a guy. Derek knows baseball. As far as the political side of sports and his ability or inability to deal with the delicate nuances of present day high school sports, get real is it any tougher than dealing with Little League moms and dads? I doubt it. The parents in Little League are legendary and the stories of their drama are historic.

The whole Tom Q. reference is like the most uneducated piece of nonsense this side of "weapons of mass ddestruction"....baseless and manipulative. I guess you didn't take Coach Q up on that free lawn mover ride he offered last year to any and ALL know-it-betters.

Two words haters: DODGER STADIUM!!!

Maybe Nichols would respond to high competition or maybe not but I judge a man by his deeds and not by the opinions of those who couldn't hold his whistle. Okay maybe whistle was a bad metaphor but seeing as you guys are "dicking" him it seemed appropriate.

Derek wish you the best.

Hey I have some opinions on the Covina situation. I know most of the guys mentioned and I agree 100% about Nicholls -- NO WAY NO HOW, he would be a horrible fit.he is an ASS. I hope Quinley would not go to Covina - I just cannot see it. Smith - I HOPE TO HELL THIS NEVER HAPPENS - it would be wrong on so many levels. How corrupt and tacky for the new Principal to bring her married lover....besides HE is just not an honorable guy. Cheat in life on and off the field.. Not very respected amongst the other baseball coaches - you gotta wonder why. And Loiza is not ready for the job yet, he needs a few more years to prove himself one way or the other, good or bad -- he tanked at Wilson EXCEPT the one big win over CO, which he is probably still talking about!!!! He is too new to the High School coaching world and I hear he is kind of a whiner.

Nichols knows the game and is without a doubt the best coach at Hollenbeck Park. He coaches the socks off of those idiots up there. With that being said, he's not a good fit as a varsity head coach at Covina and won't happen. It's just a different animal and the things you have to do politically correct when involved in a school setting and he wouldn't thrive in that situation. As for Quinley (aka Jim Leyland) at C. Oak, that situation is like an old building- it's support is not there, but it's still standing and has history to it (C. Oak- league titles and cif title) so let's not rush to tear it down, but you get the sense it could crumble to pieces at anytiime the next time someone disrespects him or his program. As for Wilson coach taking over, I don't know him but would like someone with some track record or history of winning to be our next coach. Besides, no one here seems to have any thoughts on him? Why?

NOW THAT IS AN AMUSING THOUGHT!! After following baseball in the Covina area for many years, more then I care to admit, there is NO WAY Derek Nichols is of HIGH SCHOOL coaching caliber. It is a whole different animal than Hollenbeck baseball and Derek has neither the class or pedigree (yes-education) to do so. Derek is great if you are lucky to be "one of his guys" but if not-he has so little respect, patience and wants nothing to with the other kids and let's face it -- you cannot do that at the High School level.. I wasn't even sure Quinley could do it, and still not sure he gets the whole political side of High School sports - but he does win. Unfortunately that is not nearly enough - why else is Quinley's job always in danger BUT back to Nichols.... Many people do not like him, and he has way too much pride for JUST being a Hollenbeck coach. Come on Derek -- really??? Can't ever see him head-coaching a varsity baseball team. I would love to see Kendrick or the Gladstone coach -- now they are class acts!!!!

Remukus is a pyscho! Leave him at Gladstone..

If Root and Merrill are into getting grades changed why did they lose so many players in 2007 to grades mid-season that they had to finish out the season with only 11 players? That could've been the reason they didn't go far in CIF that year. But you wouldn't here them complain about it..they ponied up and coached who they had.

Nicely said, reality check! Obviously no one was at the CHS Baseball Banquet when Root explained that he was leaving to coach his own son...and Merrill's now decided to do the same thing. The Pills were always supportive when it came to the coaches at CHS...might they have complained about certain things...don't we all...but they always gave their support. They've already been CSUF parents also...so if they were a problem why would CSUF have recruited Tyler?? Hmmm...another interesting thought

Pretty weird comments and nothing I've ever seen or heard from mom pill. you sound like a jealous NV fan to me. didn't pill graduate? so what you say does not even make sense. the coaches would have stayed and been jumping for joy that he's gone. maybe your glad he is gone. get over your hate or jealousy or whatever cuz that whole family are great people who have supported baseball at covina for alot of years.

You nailed it - that's exactly why the coaches left! Why didn't I see it before? LOL You have some serious issues, but I applaud you on using your little brain to put together that very entertaining post! The "Pill" references were so original!

maybe Root and Merrill just got tired of the Pill Popping nonsense coming from the Queen Pill herself. Always blaming the lack of hitting, the lack of coaching and the lack of "lacking" for anything less than a "W".

i miss that old broad. What an ego!

anymore phenoms in the works or can the "rest of us" go back to admiring Northview's superior fan base, superior talent base and superior fans....minus a QUEEN?

get ready CSF....she's coming!!!!!!

get a life,
Well said!!!

Im a football parent at Wilson and have attended at hand full of baseball games at Wilson. The bottom line is that we do not get a whole lot of talent baseball wise here at Wilson. Coach Loiza has maximized the level of talent with his players and got his players to play hard and be as competitive as they can be in a very tough baseball league. From what I have heard and what I know, he has very positive relationships with his players, parents, and the administration. He truly seems like he is in it for the right reasons. I really hope he stays at Wilson.

What has the Wilson guy done at that school? Has he won there and does he attract players by the type of program he runs? I think kids can go anywhere after their Freshmen year with no penalty.

If Covina wants to rise to the next level they need a proven winner. They need a guy who will stand his ground with kids, parents, etc. From being around this Valley for over 20 years and seeing the best that this Valley has to offer in coaching, I agree with Passer By. Covina should look no further then Remkus at Gladstone. That would be an amazing hire for that school if they could get him. He would instantly make Covina a yearly favorite for the Title.

Go get Remkus Covina!!!

Donkey - THLEE SEVEN - RAME ASS...

GO CHONK YOURSELF, U "VATO ROCO"

Francis the Talking Mule,
I have never told anyone not to respond to you stupid and arguing with you IS like arguing with a drunk. If I met your parents, it would be the same thing only adding two to the mix.

wow...to rip on two guys who are leaving coaching to coach their young sons. pathetic! each of them have given a number of years to other children to help them learn a sport that both coaches loved growing up and continue to grow. to say a lack of support is a joke. yes, perhaps they were not illegally recruiting at hollenbeck like other local area coaches but they spent days, nights, and weekends coaching for virtually no money. they put their personal money in to help redo part of that field. it is SAD that parents and coaches rip on any of these high school sports coaches. they make about a buck an hour for what they do and that buck usually goes back into the team. so...parents and players if you want good coaches, try supporting them for a change instead of blaming them!

It amazing to me what this blog has turned into. I hope they pick a "GOOD MAN", who is a "GOOD COACH". What I hear, Coach Solar would be that guy.

This so called pact that a bunch of dads from covina vikings made is ridiculous. My boy was involved in those talks and still is to a degree, but i ask you other dads, what are we doing and why? is covina baseball the best for our kids? we take a big chance on this decision, still two weeks to decide on this. are you sure?

I hope Covina gets a Coach to take them to the next level... The team never revolved around 1 player and if it did it was because the other 13 were softer than puddy. Merril and Root had good teams and might have won a championship except for the fact that they don't waste there summer recruiting at Hollenbeck! O ya if Nichols gets the job which he won't, Covina's best returning player will Transfer.

Godamnit what's the word on Wilson guy I'm hearing about? I'm checking out local schools for my boy after seeing what's happening at Covina. The coach is that important to me. I'm leaning towards the other school in Covina that just won.

jerry - let me enlighten you. It is possible to carry a 2.0 or above GPA and be eligible to play any sport. When it comes to graduation, as Don mentioned, there are many reasons kids don't graduate. The 2 players you are questioning had the GPA's to play, but there are things called "requirements" - you know, classes that you are required to pass in order to graduate. One of the kids you're talking about didn't pass ONE of those classes, so he was unable to graduate with his class. However, he did pass the class in summer school and has received his High School Diploma - I am very proud of him. And as far as your "changing grades" theory, Covina High teachers do not do that, and the coaches would not allow it to happen. I know because my nephew is the teacher who didn't pass the player I am talking about in that required course. I'd check out South Hills if you want to talk about grade-changing.

Unfair Assessment - If you re-read my post, I said "some of" the players, not all. There were some great kids on the team. As for the slackers, I agree that they should have been cut. No argument there. I give credit to the coaches for trying to help some of the players get their act together. Some did, some didn't. Just the way it is.

you are a hypocrite. one hand you engage me in your toilet dialog yet you tell others not to respond

"Fan,
You are 100% correct, it's like arguing with a drunk."

I do want to thank you for the laughs however. Nothing more amusing than an amat fan talking like this. Its a good reason parents reading this blog should NEVER SEND THEIR KIDS TO AMAT. do you want your kids turning like him? hell no.

Rip

The guy's resume stems from High School, collegiate and professional ranks.

The AD needs to take his time and search out all the available coaches.

Maybe this guy might be interested..

Great picture of Smith above crying in the dugout. Pathetic. CovinaBaseball Fan, got any scoop on next coach? Merrill should've told him like Tom Hanks did "There's no crying in baseball". Now it looks like we have to go get a Northview guy to clean up our mess. I heard the Wilson guy is a Northview grad and former asst. coach there.

Covinabaseballfan,

First let me quote you.

"Jerry - Your post was a perfect example of "some of" the illiterate kids that Merrill and Root had to put up with. What were your grades like? Obviously didn't get an A in grammar. There were only a handful of kids on that team that really cared and wanted to work hard. Sorry, but that's the truth, plain and simple"

These are the same kids that played with your son and were coached by your husband for many years, none of them are perfect but I am suprised you defended the Covina coaches by taking a shot at the kids.

Keep in mind it all starts at the top, if the kids were lazy on the field then cut them, if the kids are failing in class then again cut them.

Were these lazy and illiterate kids cut which would have been better for the team? Nope, they played for the program didnt they?

Who has the authority to cut these lazy and illiterate kids from the team?

The answer is the Coaches of course.

I am really amazed you went there, I had more respect for you prior to your post.

The real truth is even though the Covina coaches seemed to be decent guys they didnt have a handle on the team, in other words they never were in control and arent very good managers or coaches.

Here's a couple thoughts for you Jerry:

Kids don't graduate for any number of reasons. Mostly it's because they didn't do the schoolwork required.

The only “sport” that lines up the winner and the loser before they play is pro wrestling. I would encourage you to spend more time with that rather than HS Baseball. I think we all will be happier.

covinabaseballfan has posted more Covina Baseball truth on this blog than any five of the rest of us combined, take it as reality and many things will seem clearer to you.

I have way more, but the Marines teach you to train in 3's; concepts, personnel, lessons. Less than three wastes time and more than three are hard to retain. I like the concept as they seem to pretty good at that teaching thing.

Francis the Talking Mule,
Here is your chance to prove that we are one and the same. Write two seprate posts and have them show a minute apart. Use the same amount of words, 21, on the second post.

Give it a try. On your mark, get set, GO!

covina baseball fan. What are u talking about? Did u play for them? If you did then you would know what I am talking about. How is that two kids on last years team played the whole season but some how didnt graduate? Maybe its because the coaches talked to there teachers and told them to give them passing grades during the season but once the season was over they didnt care what happened to them! Is that caring about the team or players? It wasnt the kids faults it was the coaching the reason they only had a handfull of kids that wanted to win was because everyone else new what the outcome of the season was going to be. why play hard? The coaches dont care and either should we. YOU CANT EXPECT TO WIN CIF WHEN YOU START YOUR SEASON IN JANUARY!!!!!!!!

Old man Remkus isn't getting this job Happy Rockers. Sorry, but not happening. Maybe you can get Joe Paterno to take over football.
Insiders say it's going to be Wilson coach who takes over. What is the word on him?

As I said before. Back in the 80's and 90's Gladstone was a consistent 20 win team and always going far in the playoffs. Covina should try and get Remkus like NOW if they could.

This is for blackjack21.

Covina would be insane to pass on the likes of someone like Remkus from Gladstone. That guy can flat out coach, just imagine what that guy would do with talent. Back in the 90's when Gladstone had some talent, they would take out most of the larger and way more talented programs out or to the floor. I remember them smashing Bonita, Covina, Diamond Ranch, Ayala, and a host of the schools in the OC over the years. If he went to Covina those kids would learn the correct way to play "Real" baseball. No favortism at all and they would learn what work and "team" means. You wdont win 500 games with outdated techniques. Remkus has turned down many power programs in this Valley over the years.

I just wish Covina hires this guy. Covina would be a force for years. Hope they Pony for a proven stud!

Donkey Boy,
isn't this like the pot calling the kettle black? If annyone is an expert at posting under multiple names, YOU win the Gold Medal in that event.

Your writings are more befitting of a latrine wall, written by some demented retard with his own excrement. You have no imagination and constantly repeat yourself.

Going back to the gene pool, you are obviously a product of two mismatched sets. The problem grows to know that there are more like you and what really scares me is that fact that you will someday find another equally demented, because your type attracts each other, to mate with and create an even worse set of humans to inhabit this planet.

Your parents, if you HAVE two parents, did a lousy job of raising you and when you procreate, heaven help us.

come on i know you are the same person. you are from amat and have no brains which is a dead giveaway

Unique relationship with the principal? That's an interesting way to put it. Hiring Smith would be highly unethical, in my opinion.

Jerry - Your post was a perfect example of "some of" the illiterate kids that Merrill and Root had to put up with. What were your grades like? Obviously didn't get an A in grammar. There were only a handful of kids on that team that really cared and wanted to work hard. Sorry, but that's the truth, plain and simple.

I think there is a position with the coaching job. Who has the credentials you speak of? I hear Smith, Solar, Loiza. Post by Jerry was right on. I also congratulate Murphy and the Vikings on their championship. Someone mentioned they've been good for a couple years. I'd say they've been very good for about 7-8 years dating back to the oldest Pedroza brother when he was there. I'm a Covina fan, but like when I see teams play hard and Northview does everyday. Hopefully, we will get to that level in a few years.

Kevin Smith sighting at Covina High School. District may not allow for a teaching assignment. Thus, Smith transferring from South Hills would be easy route for both Covina and Smith. Has an unique relationship with new principal.

Does anybody know if this job is just coaching or a teaching position too?

Could open up someone who hasn't been mentioned here, who has unbeleivable credentials...

Merrill and Root had to go they didnt care about any of the players. i am happy that they both left, they have coached some of the best players from around here and have had some of the best teams, and all they can do is go to the first or second round of CIF thats pathetic. I congradualate the Vikings on there championship way to go. Every year they strive to be the best and play hard. Murphy is and outstanding coach if he had the teams merill and root have had he would have at least three or four titles under his belt keep up the good work. I hope covina gets a coach that is firm but fair and doesnt center the team around one player like merill and root did last year and the year before that and we all new who that player was. well who ever takes the team is better than the previous coaches. Also all u guys need to stop worrying about who takes the team. GROW UP u guys are adults and worry about high school sports who cares what happens.

Donkey Boy,
You are really a jack@$$, we are NOT one and the same but we do think alike. Trouble is no one thinks like you because everyone else has an education, respect, and common sense. Qualities you will never posess. You can't post loyalty to your continuation school can you?

c721t

Donkey boy, you are barking oh excuse me I mean hee hawing in your case up the wrong tree there boy. I am proud to be AMAT 73 always have been always will be , no need to post under any other name like you frequently have on this blog. That may be due to your lack of self worth and also you are just to embarrassed to admit who you are loyal to.

Hoff and Staff must Go!

We have had enough.

Joe Amat,

Out of deference to my Covina brothers I will post my reply to you and anyone else on the last Amat thread.

J

amat 73 is bleeds blue and gold postings one min apart

Remkus is old and crusty. He could teach back in the day, but his ways are outdated and doesn't relate anymore to the kids. More the kids problem than his, but it is what it is. All indications are that Wilson coach loiza is the front runner.

Donkey Boy,
The ultimate act of stupidity is to post as someone else but that's right up your alley isn't it?

Hey donkey boy ,
What a low point you have stooped to now . Posting under someone else's name. Do you think nobody is going to recognize your sick replies. Do us all a favor and just use your new given name put upon you by the AMAT faithful " donkey boy " ,besides it fitting you perfectly you will be able to quit racking your brain to come up with new names for yourself.

Best teacher in the whold valley hands down.

hopefully he wasnt teach spelling lessons

Remkus is probably the best coach in this valley. Most young guys here have no clue how good this guy is. This guy would bring CIF Championships to Covina overnight. Best teacher in the whold valley hands down.

Justrab,

I hope we all aren't judged by how we performed TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS AGO!

Suffice to say Martinez grew as a coach, as evidenced by CIF Titles in baseball as a head coach and a more prominent assistant on championship teams in football that began a string of 11 consecutive League Titles in '85 after you left.

As for football between 81-84 , you were CIF-Runners ups in '83, so something must have been working during that time.

Glen was only an assistant line coach and FAR from a decision maker on any choices in plays, strategies or overall vision on that staff. Patricio was the head coach and Bob Woods and Joe Rodgers were the coordinators(RIP).

Right now they're both upstairs sitting on a cloud knocking down some cold ones (probably with Stan and Nick) having a good laugh.

please dont mind me. I am a loser and i just now realized it.

Donkey Boy,
Every thread involves us you continuation school drop out.

maybe coach price could go to covina! y did they get rid of him?

you amat donkeys get the hell off this thread. this is a topic about covina and lets keep it that way

Of course Loiza wants the job at Covina. Wilson sucks. The pony hollenbeck legend Dick Nichols interested? Oh boy, all we'd hear is how "Willie Mays used to do this and that when he played". Put that rumor to rest right now.

It was all about unaccounted money who could say why it was missing, but the story was he left because he wanted to coach his son in Football. He was asked to leave it all happen in 24 hours. Good thing Tom has done a great job.

Please, please, please, please.....enough already. This is not a BA thread. The Covina HS coaching job is open remember. Enough with the stroll down BA memory lane.

Old School Amat,

First, my comments are restricted from 1981 to 1984 so prior and after those years perhaps Martinez had a different “record”, but during that period I will let the yearbooks (see football) speak for themselves. I did not play baseball so perhaps his coaching style, success and overall ability to win was far better than I observed. I have no axe to grind as I transferred in from Servite and did not like anyone from Amat my first week. My observation stems from watching talented teams lose due to “interesting” choices in plays, strategies and overall vision.

I offer the Amat Court the records and players who played under him and Patricio as my facts.

Old School Amat, if you went to Amat during this period and played football you cannot tell
