Covina baseball update: It's Loaiza
After the sudden departure of Covina High School's co-head baseball coaches Scott Root and Ryan Merrill, Colts athletic director Darryl Thomas moved swiftly in naming Pete Loaiza the next head coach. Loaiza, who graduated at Northview in 1990 and played college baseball at the University of La Verne, leaves the Wilson High School baseball program after three years and a 22-45-2 overall record. The Wildcats were 8-15-1 last season and finished last in the very competitive Miramonte League. Loaiza was an assistant for Northview coach Darren Murphy from 2003-05 before moving to Wilson.
"This is an incredible opportunity for my career," Loaiza said. "Obviously being back in the community where I grew up was important to me. I was born and raised in Covina, I live here now, and the opportunity to come home, teach and coach baseball is an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

The Colts were 16-9 last season but graduated nine seniors. But they have three talented sophomores back in shortstop Matt Munoz along with Jeff Moran, Andy Perez and senior pitcher/outfielder David Olivas.
Loaiza said for those who don't know him, his record at Wilson isn't reflective of what he brings to Covina.
"I have a lot of confidence in myself," Loaiza said. "Coming to Covina, I know they've got a great tradition, fan base and alumni that support's their program and I want to build on it.
"What's great about coaching in this area is that the youth programs in Covina are phenomenal. Whether it's pop-warner or travel baseball, when you've got that in place you're off to a great start."
Thomas said that several candidates applied for the position, but that he had a good feeling after meeting with Loaiza.
"I had a great interview with Pete and I could see how passionate he was about coming here," Thomas said. "He's going to be a physical education teacher, and that was important, to have an on-campus coach. I think he'll do a great job in upholding Covina's baseball traditions."
For someone who graduated at Northview and remains close friends with Murphy, it's ironic that Loaiza would wind up at a school that was once his rival.
"It's going to be lots of fun," Loaiza said. "Northview's built a pretty dominant program, both in the Valle Vista league and in the Valley, but now they're my rival. They're our rival.
"I owe it to Covina, our players, its fans, alumni, and every Colts supporter to make this the best program possible."

Root backer:
Hey I agree with you. Not everyone's cup of tea but I liked the guy alot. My son listened to him and changed from a defensive liability to someone who made only one error the whole year starting at first base. He was very serious and did his best, along with Merrill they were damn good coaches. And like alot of bloggers said before Mike pill was ALWAYS available after practice for extra hitting and whatever you needed and he wasnt even a coach! My son and I loved our time at CHS and wished we could have taken out Charter oak but It was not to be. Anyways good luck root and merrill, if you guys are reading this you got my vote and I know you will land on your feet wherever you wind up.

we should all thank covina. loiza is a loud-mouth pop-off who had 1 baseball high light in his very short career - beating charter oak. enjoy it P, that will still be your only big win.

I have to go with Quinley @ Charter Oak. He has coached a lot of kids who have gone on to colleges & also over a dozen who have played in MLB. Remkus would be my #2. There are some otther good ones in the area.

Hello...it's freaking HS (NO REVENUE PRODUCING) baseball here. We're not talking LA Dodgers vs New York Yankees in the multi-billion dollar MLB industry. With HS budgets as tight as they are, everybody should just be happy that the local high schools even have sports programs for the kids to participate in.

I guess I am amongst the unpopular but my boys and I will really missCoach Root. He is a good guy and just didn't have all the tools or participation to make it all click. I wish him the best.

As far as assistant coaches go, I really like the way that kids relate to our pitching coach Chris Beck. He's been a head coach (Loyola HS), is a great teacher (on the field and in the classroom ) and has spent summers coaching in the Cape Cod league.
I hope he sticks around and takes over for Nieto should Andy choose to move on.
Of course some school could also really score by enticing Kendrena back to the diamond.

The question was who would you like to have coach your program. Personal attacks on Loaiza are uncalled for. Ok, some of you expressed your opinion, don't make it personal. Fred, you should clean this topic up.
Anyone got any positive thoughts on coaches?

Lots of comments about who they should've hired blah blah blah. Let's put it on you...the blogger. Who would you hire right now to coach your team or start a program? Try to be positive, it's not about who you wouldn't hire. Here are some valley names to get you started. Nieto- Amat, Remkus-Gladstone, Smith-South Hills, Quinley-Charter Oak, Henley-Glendora, Murphy-Northview? Any others?
Posted by: King Nut | August 29, 2008 8:53 PM
FYI regarding Covina's baseball job. The new principal called Kevin Smith at South Hills to ask him who she should interview for this job and ultimately hire for the job. Understand that Covina is in the same District as South Hills and Smith could not be upstaged by Covina's baseball program as Northview has already surpassed Smith and his program. Smith did not want a bigger name taking over and put his program third in line behind the other two schools. Sorry to say that there were two very candidates at South Hills who coached during the Bastion era who inquired about Covina's job.
Posted by: covina valley insider | August 29, 2008 8:10 PM
His crowd and friends over there? what does that mean? Norm Chow went to UCLA after being at USC. It's a profession, you go where you want to go professionally. Dick Sheehan went from Covina to Northview and look how well he did. I don't know what choice Loiza was on the list, but he's the coach now. If you're a Colt fan, hope that he brings some of the Northview stuff with him. If you are a Viking fan, hope that Wilson last few years was what this guy was about. That would mean more championships for the Vikings.

just read the blog ,this new hire for covina high, his record doesn't sound to good. could have gotten somebody better I would think? But thats Thomas.
I know they have two good sophmores coming back Jeff Moran and Matt Munoz and senior David Olvias the third kid hardly played.
Posted by: diamonddog | August 29, 2008 3:39 PM
Covina deserved a coach that had a winning backround and was very established. IMO they took a step backwards, but only time will tell. Covina had the opportunity to hire so many coach's. The list of experienced coach's that inquired about the position is unreal. Once again they dropped the ball. Maybe he does well and and wins some ballgames, But could not help to think of what it would of been like with some of the other candidates. Obviously Covina and the District didnt want to pay for that type of service. Only time will tell, good luck with your choice Covina.
OVer the years Covina Dist has been one of or if not the stingiest District out there when it comes to Years of srvice etc. Go's back to Smitty at SH to Quinly ( CO DIST )etc. Maybe if Baseball was revenue producing they would fork out some dough for an established guy, as they deserve one.
thanks

colt 92, you hit it right on the head, thats his crowd and friends over there, like i said before, covina, deserved much better.
Posted by: not a good hire | August 29, 2008 1:53 PM
yea I have been around loiza and grew up in the area - kind of shocked with the hire as well. he is not really a big baseball name, never really knew it was his gig. I think he hangs around that crowd and seems that is why he got into it later. not real sure but I don't think he is going to be a big threat out on the field. thats cool though, covina has got some good kids coming up, we will see what loiza can do. I agree with earlier comment they could have done better for the school.

The school district can alter any contract if they really want a specific coach. Covina, with permission from the district could have offered more years of service. Maybe athletics is not a top priority at Covina High. Give Loiza a chance, he will very likely surprise all of you haters.
Posted by: baseball fan | August 28, 2008 9:29 PM
Well said pastorbg...
Unfortunately Thomas nor anyone else can negotiate a different contract even for a coach. Teachers work under a union contract that is negotiated by the teacher bargaining unit and HAS to be followed. That contract dictates salary, years of experience that will be accepted, and layoffs. So honestly you can't blame the administrators, district nor Thomas on this one.
Covina High already lost two coaches in some ways because of the coach bashing...so pony up colt players and colt fans and try supporting a coach for a change...maybe he'll stick around for awhile.
Posted by: get a life | August 28, 2008 8:05 PM
I know Covina hasn't won much lately, but no interview with Loiza or quotes? I'm not happy with the hire and think Covina deserves more than a rook, but I would like to hear what the guy has to say. Someone wrote that it's all about him...what does that mean?
Posted by: NutOnU | August 28, 2008 6:54 PM
I am a Mike Solar fan,so I have followed the story of the CHS baseball job hoping it may work out for him. I do not know all the stuff, but I do know I am shocked that you can go on this blog and present ruthless comments, rumors, etc, on people you do not even know. Whether it is a mom, player, coach, teacher, city school, etc, no one deserves some of the unfounded, opinionated disrespect I have seen here. Fred, I think you and the paper should monitor this a little more. The slander is pathetic, and with the school year here, we should be excited and positive about what the players, coaches ,parents and schools are about to start. Not what has been posted here...good luck to all the teams and thanks to Mike Solar for helping players.

A position closer to home? There are teachers that live by the beach who drive 45 min to an hour each morning to the sgv and we hire someone that thinks 15-20 min (Covina to Wilson) is far. I guess he can't say it, but it's more a "I want to get out of this sh*thole, be closer to home, and compete". Come on Loiza, just bring it and be truthful.
Posted by: PopGoesTheWeazel | August 28, 2008 6:36 AM

Who else turned the job down? I hear Solar for one. I can't fathom that Barbone (Eddie Munster) was offered the job.
Posted by: blac@aol.com | August 27, 2008 3:05 PM
So that makes 2 coach's that turned Covina down or told them no thank you because of the cuts etc. Too bad Covina just cant pay a guy what he's worth. o-well, good luck with your hire.
Posted by: Passer By | August 27, 2008 2:36 PM
Solar really wishes he could have taken the job. He was offered the job the same day as his interview. Covina told him that if teaching positions are cut there no promise that he would have a job the following year. Plus a huge pay cut didn't work in Covina's favor. It would have been nice to an alum get that job.
Posted by: covinablows | August 27, 2008 9:41 AM
Covina good luck with your hire. As I have stated before, Covina was not going to get one of the established proven winners that applied and inquired about the position, as long as they are only willing to give 7 years on the pay scale. Covina missed the boat again. Sources tell me that there were at least 5 coaches that inquired about the Covina job that have been in this valley for years.
Maybe Thomas does not want anyone to come in there and steal the thunder from the football team, who knows, anyway good luck with your hire, as everyone who knew the process knew it was gonna be someone who was not really proven yet, based on the District etc.

Barbone's resume isn't too big for Covina, the girls at Covina are just too young. I like APU's program now (back to back world series) and the class the program now has that was lacking.
Posted by: Rachel | August 27, 2008 6:49 AM

Posted by: no clue | August 27, 2008 6:02 AM
Tony Barbone resume is way too large for Covina. Heck if he wanted another challenge, he might just take an under performing program and turn that one around too!

Well lets just say that whomever is hired, it cannot get any worse than what these so-called co-head coaches did. These two were always a last place finisher in a 3 team league. They had teams with so much talent, but could never teach those kids to play up to the next level. I could never understand how these two guys program could have ever been successful when they started the programs at the end of January, and everone else had been playing almost year round. That show their commitment to their program. If it was not for the outstanding instruction that many of the covina kids had as youths, the Covina program would probably have been in the same situation as the 3 other schools which finish under them. I understand that economic times are currently bad, however, when they selected Merrill as the head varsity coach, it was done based upon the buddy system and not because he was the best man for the position. It's funny what ego's really do to a program.

Loiza from Wilson is your next Covina coach. I don't know about up and coming, but word has it he's agreed to become the next coach. Announcement will come anyday. I've only heard that he played and coached at Northview before Wilson job. Does anyone have more info or opinions on Loiza?

NoSomethingdoesn'tNoSh*t, Barbone is not the coach (thank god). Can you imagine the Eddie Munster of coaching in high school again. There's a lot of crap in his baggage that he'd bring that you don't want. The coach has been selected and it's not Smith, Remkus,Solar, or Barbone. Interesting choice, but an up and comer. Come on Covina, announce it or I will. A lot of people know. You have til lunch.

Baseball NutCase II,
Don't make excuses because the fossil didn't get the job. 7 years wasn't sole reason for certain coaches not getting an interview and probabally for a few it was, but not all, some just didn't pass the application process.

Talked w a buddy at the District office and it looks as if Covina was only gonna offer 7 years on the pay scale. Therefore many of the heavy hitting coach's said no thanks. Maybe they got lucky with someone! Who knows, seems other Districts mostly out in the 909 offer way more for years of service.

co mom...put a sock in that big mouth of yours. take care of your baby and get off the blog. what are you a freakin "baiter"? LL made a point that you disagreed with, grow up, he has a right to his opinion. NV was and might be considered the 3rd rated school in the district....that's perception. he didn't make it, he acknowledged it. what's wrong with that?
I wrote STATION IN LIFE. Read it again. Slowly. LL sorry this is getting out of hand. I have family that played baseball and basketball for Northview and remember clearly remember them always talking about the district's less tahn positive use of funds regarding their sports programs.
It's that way in life. It's a pecking order that is imposed thru perception or thru deeds. It's never fair but it's LIFE. Like single mothers. There's a bad perception about them, wouldn't you say? Is that fair? NO But is it out there? ABSOLUTEY.
No more high horsing around. You look stupid and childish. Especially when you want it both ways...HEY I WANT TO BE HEARD....HEY....I'M "JUST" A KID???

Co mom i can tell by your post---yep---big mouth!! Learn to read i have state facts and the great thing is these facts are public information that anyone can find

i have to wonder - living legend, with that name, and a "supposed" big ego IT COULD ONLY MEAN ONE THING === yep - SMALL P----. learn THE FACTS and then come back but how about you just try and say something nice about YOUR school of choice.

how about that lousmouth from glendora that was always on henley's butt? he claims to know so much about baseball and maybe he can finally coach a team that doesn't have a team mom and the parents don't bring snacks for the after the game speech.

This is about Covina baseball losers. Not about what side of town is better. Its Covina, besides a few blocks around CO the rest has turned a little ghetto anyway.

One more thing I never said anything about the demographics of the area and I am not the one who started talking about test scores....The original point was that within the cvusd Northview is the "other" school...and that is the truth...once again people dont get into conversations intill you have read all the post from the start..then you wont sound so un-informed
Posted by: Living Legend | August 23, 2008 10:19 PM
Not worried about inflating my ego,my ego is big enough thank you. Not really worried if you agree with me either, it really doesn't matter since your not interested in the truth.
Posted by: Living Legend | August 23, 2008 10:13 PM
Living Legend Not- for those that have lived and have raised kids in the city of Covina - most will agree there isn;t much difference in the two schools and areas (of course some parts)if you are talking about South Hills being the 3rd. school, well there is the odd man out and absolutely the MOST different of the 3 and aren't they in West Covina anyways.
Posted by: proud of both schools in good old covina | August 23, 2008 9:39 PM
Dont care one way or the other about nv or covina, but to the guy that signs LIVING LEGEND - you make yourself sound like an idiot so I ahave to agree. if you are fortunate enough to enjoy a good life, be humble and dignified - don't destroy other's visions of their home town, just to inflate your sorry ego.

STATION IN LIFE snoozeeeeeeee
Posted by: snooze | August 23, 2008 6:52 PM
All I'm going to say in this argument is that I'm a proud Northview grad, and I think I turned out OK.
I think it doesn't matter where you get the education as long as you take advantage of it.
Posted by: Steve Ramirez | August 23, 2008 5:58 PM
I am not trying to demean anyones acomplishments. But the truth is the truth, within cvusd no matter what Northview does they are always going to be percived as the third high school. I know the truth hurts...anyways who is the one who has the simple mind? The one who just states facts or the one who calls another an idiot?

STATION IN LIFE
Very excellent post. It amazes me how this crap was talked about under this thread..
We play in the VVL and every year when we visit Ganesha's tuff, they have BIG signs up welcoming the opponents. Truly a classy way to show respect for your opponent. Everyone can take a lesson from these fine folks.
They show great sportsmanship even in defeat.

Here's the thing with people who come on here and bag on whole cities and whole school programs for their "station in life". Remember it's a "station" and is NOT permanent PRISON. Like the song "train keeps a rollin all night long" the "engine" is education and the destination matters more than the "starting point".
What strikes me as odd is the "well educated private school Alumni" who live and breathe right down the street from those they think they are superior to in every facet of their lives. Why?
I've never figured that out. Some of those very bloggers I know personally. Yet they bag on public schools and disadvantages neighborhoods with impunity. Again...why?
I know there are a couple of drive by artists and knee jerk "jerks" that just have their dirty little fingers at the ready but really...are they 'themselves' even a little bit more successful than the people and schools they put down? I doubt it very much.
It comes down to what it always comes down to....getting it done. Results. The rest is just BS.
Want to make fun of people for their "station in life"....look at a family album. We just passed what I like to call...NATIONAL SH*T TALKER DAY.
What is National Sh%t Talker Day you may ask. Well that's the day that accepted freshmen move in to their "dorms". That's what I believe is the equalizer to all the braggers that come on here and bag on kids and crap on families because "their" kids PLAY A GAME WELL. Really? THAT makes them superior for ...how long?
So enough with the HS TEST SCORES and INFLATED HOME PRICES and EXCLUSIVE NEIGHBORHOODS p8ssing contests and ECONOMIC putdowns.....the fact of the matter is this blog is about as relevant to ANYONE'S life as the quality of toilet paper in a Ensenada whore house.
Again...INDIVIDUAL SCORES...AGAIN...IT'S THE INDIVIDUAL TEST SCORE THAT MATTERS MOST.
Trajectory matters more than starting point.....ask ANY COLLEGE RECRUITER either on the field or in the class room HOW they EVALUATE. "trajectry" ...down the road....hear the train?
Good luck to the Azusa's, the Ganesha's, the Bassett's, the Sister's of the Poor. Being a coach and a player on THOSE teams is what defines HS football. Against all odds...runnning into the battle...without a chance in hell...and yet ....maybe IF the team pulls together and the FOOTBALL GODS smile....they win! Either way the parents and boosters are THERE! YEAR AFTER YEAR AFTER YEAR....fighting the good fight.
Congrats to those players and coaches. STATION IN LIFE is only where you start.....YOU ALONE DECIDE WHERE YOU FINISH.
Shame on anyone who sees it differently.
If you missed National Sh^t Talker Day don't worry...the Train pulls in EVRY YEAR about this time. CHOO CHOO !!!!

Yes living idiot,OR wasn't reality chick involved as well? Check into actual, factual scores. Do you know what Covina was higher in for the first time and by how many points?? Do you really - simple minded man. Let's discuss what they are higher in - SHALL WE??? I really do not want to even get into this because I have nothing against Covina - but don't you dare try to bring down Northview and all that we have accomplished!

Living Legend, A man of great insight and inside information. Perhaps you know that Covina revoked permits from kids that weren't "up to par" in the classroom and shipped them out before testing and does Covina use their special ed kids scores or do they separate those and pretend they're not a part of the school as well? We'll see just how "inside" you are. Get back to me on those items. Also, this is first time in few years that Covina had a higher score. Correct?
Posted by: TellTheWholeTruth | August 23, 2008 11:00 AM
I know i am such a terrible person...I guess you guys have all the info and i have none...Oh wait why dont you check this past school years scores, oh yeah you will find out northviews were the lowest of the high schools in the cvusd....Here is what I am implying that people within the district think of northview as the lesser of the 3 high schools in the cvusd...I am not some punk or some loud mouth parent..I am someone who has great inside information...so lets break out some serious stats...I mean I know the school whos score only went up one point and that school begins with a north and ends with a view. Oh and just so you dont start saying "well what about covinas scores", well they went up 45 points....so before you start mouthing off you better come correct....i would agree that i am a simple man but never simple minded

Please hire Adame at Covina. Pretty please. Did he interview? He SUCKS!

Reality czech ,
Some topics are better left alone when it does not concern AMAT.
Posted by: AMAT 73 | August 22, 2008 4:54 PM
REALITY CHICK - YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN TO SHUT THE FLIP UP. YOU TALK OUT OF YOUR A$$$$. THANKS AMAT 73 FOR SAYING THE VERY THING THAT MOST OF NV PEEPS WANTED TO SAY, BESIDES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - WE ARE PRETTY DAMN PROUD OF NV AND OUR AREA. NOW - WHERE EXACTLY ARE YOU FROM? TRUST ME DUDE, NV HAS A LOT TO BE PROUD OF - AND WE ARE. TOO BAD YOUR LIFE IS SO PATHETIC, BUT YOU CAN TURN IT AROUND AND MAYB TRY TO SAY SOMETHING DECENT -- ONCE IN A BLUE MOON. YOU ARE ONE PHONY AMAT GUY ANYWAYS--CHECK HIS CREDENTIALS PEOPLE, YOU REALLY DON'T WANT TO CLAIM HIM
Posted by: REALITY CHICK AGAIN | August 22, 2008 4:33 PM
Amat 73-nowhere did I intend to put down the school or the area. I really just responded to when he said "covina and nv are so similar in every demographic aspect." which is completely untrue. so I suggested a drive thru both places.it's easy to spot. not worse - different, but as you say, that says nothing about what goes on at each school.
Posted by: reality czech | August 22, 2008 4:31 PM
reality czech ,
Isn't what you are posting the kind of post we wind up in heated posts when people post about AMAT and where it is located. Barrio, the hood, crime, and so forth . It is not about what is outside the fence of the school but what is on the inside. In Northview's case there is no fence but you get the idea.
Posted by: AMAT 73 | August 22, 2008 4:10 PM
go for drive thru both attendance areas. or better yet - check average home prices. they're that way for a reason!
Posted by: reality czech | August 22, 2008 2:26 PM
Living Idiot - you are kidding right? Explain what you are implying. I mean - the schools are 2 minutes apart, do you really think there is much of a difference? both schools/areas have good and bad.

living legend.....couldn't and ISN'T that same thing said about Bishop Amat from the vantage point of:
Mater Dei
Notre Dame
Crespi
Loyola
Damien
Servite
St. John Bosco
St. Francis
Santa Margarita
Maranatha
Which school academically or socially is on par with La Puente's best? None on that list.
Sometimes the thing you mock is your reflection.
Northview is quitely dominating in the area that matters most....the kids. Too bad you seem to think you're better than they are and use other schools to make your point when every Catholic private school could make a similar argument about Bishop Amat. Right or wrong.
Congratulations to Northview and the way they go about their business. NO STATS JUST RINGS ...Clearly IF South Hills or Glendora had the success that Northview has had over the past few years in baseball and wrestling the Tribune would be falling over itself to put them front and center but Northview, like LL alluded to, is second rate ONLY in the minds of SMALL MINDED PEOPLE....of which I'm sure Living Legend is not....or am I wrong?
Posted by: 2nd rate only in the mind of 2nd rate minds | August 22, 2008 12:05 PM
living legend - only in your small little mind. covina and nv are so similar in every demographic aspect. although i happen to have inside info on how much better nv is on testing, and actually graduating their students, college-bound students. you really want go there - we can break out some serious stats. what an assinine comment you just made, shows your "true" intelligence.

Ive heard they only want to hire a teacher for the job.
Posted by: Deep Throat | August 22, 2008 9:20 AM
Thats funny you say that about the so called northview domiance....cause to most northview is still considered the "red headed step child" of the covina valley usd.
Posted by: Living Legend | August 22, 2008 8:55 AM
Another stat they've won in is academic test scores from the state last 3 years.
Posted by: Paul | August 22, 2008 8:31 AM
Has anyone noticed the dominance that Northview is going through over its neighbor Covina? Over the last 5 years, Northview has repeatedly beaten Covina in all major sports, with the exception of football the two McDonough years. In basketball, baseball, and wrestling, it's been many years that Covina has placed higher than Northview in any of these sports. Football for NV has won 5 of last 7 years I believe. 2007-08 year Northview went 7-0 in head to head battles (football 1x, basketball 2x, wrestling 1x, and baseball 3x). Just thought it was interesting that Northview has dominated the rivalry that much. Better hire a good coach or watch the trend continue.

Very well known in the valley is Gil Adame from South El Monte? What is he well known for? He should go to Covina with all the undue influence he's done with incoming class over there. Boy is this guy Adame starving for attention.
