An open discussion, whoever and whatever you wanna talk about....

And remember, coming this fall. BISHOP BREAKDOWN
We'll post a thread on Monday's to evaluate Bishop Amat's Friday night's games, the players, coaching staff's, and the next opponent. With the coaching staff in place, this feels like a make or break year at Bishop Amat. It's probably not fair to expect too much from Steve Hagerty and staff in their first season, but there's nothing like the excitement and emotions of a quick turnaround. Whatever happens, week-by-week, we'll follow the ride.

The East San Gabriel Valley has the best football talent, but nobody has a drumline quite like Muir.

Comments

Well now let’s see who is wrong. Wilson practice yesterday, finally. Well they had 50 kids on the field practicing with Hoyd. O Yea did I forget to mention that he had the freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors practicing with him. Now let’s do the math Los Altos had 65 kids practicing on the FRESHMEN team, and Wilson had 50 kids out for the whole program. O what happen to the thirteen coaches, we only saw five and two of them granulated from High School last year. That is five coaches for the whole football program and two of them are kids. Like we all said it isn’t too late you can still transfer out to a school with a football program.

GREAT JOB HOYD

What is so great about the Hoyd supporters comments, no facts. All they are talking about is parties that Hoyd puts on. They get their kids to write Fred how good of a job Hoyd is doing. Fred comes on this blog and talks about the kids being happy.

Well at least some of the 50 kids are happy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I also heard that Hoyd has gone out of his way to piss off the local Pop Warner league. He decides to change his practice to the same time as the youth football league and he also decided to have his fifty kid’s practice where HLP Pop Warner is suppose to practice. So let’s see what he has done in his first few months as head coach at Wilson. Chased away so many kids that they don’t have a freshmen team that is something that Workman and Bassett the weakest football schools in the area can’t do. He has pissed off the local youth football program so much they are looking for a new location to practice and play.

Do you know what amazes me Tustin Pop Warner won’t even let Hoyd coach the defensive. Hoyd is currently a linebacker coach on the Tustin Pop Warner Jr. Midget team. But Wilson will hire this JOKE as a Head Coach of a football program, or at least what use to be a football program.

GREAT JOB CLEGG

Fred, now we gave him a chance. Why don't you go down and see what is going on and report the TRUTH. Not that some 14 year old kid is happy or the party was fun. Lets report some facts, that is what you get paid for.

WOW Be thankful yous guys do not play these quality teams!

we can call you DA= Dumb ass

We'll just call you DB.

It could stand for "Donkey Boy" or "Drive-By". take your pick.

Team JESUS!

What team is worth cheering for?

amat fans are all fools

like I said - between now and December come up with a single screen name, tell us where you went or who you support, and then we'll talk. until then feel free to continue to drive by each topic and make an ass out of yourself.

amat athletic supporters (jock straps) dont make predictions because most know that theid team is going to SUCKKKKKKKK this year.

funny how Amat supporters rarely make predictions but the detractors spew hate and their 3-7 predictions regularly. let's talk in December.

yes now on the losing amat 2008 football team. let another 3-7 season begin

Joe Amat,

Your points are well and perhaps we all can grow. Now, on to Amat football/2008.

J

joe? you are putting us to sleep with your mindless rants zzzzzzzzz

J,
Well said, and understood. I agree that character is developed early in life. To date, I think that I've been fortunate to be winning that battle with my own children. Knock on wood !:?)

However, I happen to be in the camp that believes mindset is not fixed, but that we are capable of growth. To believe otherwise is a little depressing, no? Neither Mindset is wrong-they just are. And there are many who are successful who have either mindest.

But , how we perceive others is an indication of our own mindset as well. It's a matter of changing the internal monologue from a judging one to a growth-oriented one.

I experienced Martinez then, and later as well. I can recognize your views on him then. To some extent, I might even agree. Heck - he might even agree.

When we're in high school, I think we fail to realize that some who teach and coach are a few meager years older than us. Martinez' "position" on the staff was as much due to him being in his early 20's. Certainly unprepared to be given an opportunity to truly "lead". And only a few years removed from coaching in a completely different environment in the East LA City Section. Probably at a time when he realized what was important and what worked in motivating kids. We mention some pretty special company from above that many coaches, or leaders, may never join.

Someone once said, "I'm not what I could be, I may not be what I should be.... but I'm better than I was!"

As long as we're moving in that direction every day, we're in good shape. I think he might be.

c721t

Joe Amat,

Having had too many years now to ponder “Character” I am sorry but character is something you develop early in life. Yes, I grant you I gather from recent success and post my years perhaps he has grown a bit, but having had the opportunity to manage as many as 1,000 employees, teach at the academic level and be around some very good coaches over the past forty years I cannot believe some character flaws will change.

I did not play for Don Markham (1985 Amat), but would you say his success overshadows his negative affect on players and staff. I am not comparing the two so please don’t take offense, but my point is that I don’t respect the many not because I did not play, not because I harbor some twenty year old grudge, but simply because as a “whole” coach you cannot even compare him to Coach Rodgers (RIP), Coach Woods (RIP) and Stan/Nick/Pedro “Pete” Hernandez (all RIP).

To you point about Glen being only an assistant I cannot speak for Patricio, but frankly I am sure his position in life with Patricio was a direct result of his inability to lead when it the opportunity was given to him.

Unfortunately we will all be judged one day and that will be for our entire life, not simply a period. I am sorry, but I have too many years behind me and fewer and fewer ahead of me to not feel qualified to say that Martinez core values probably are where they were twenty years ago.

As for doing something right, yes, but that was the coaches you cite and may their souls rest in peace along with Fr. Cremins!

J

duarte will only be good if they kick the crap out of crappy teams. its only because they beat the little sisters of the poor

You guys really dont understand that duarte has some very good players. im not going to speak up on the players that they have. around the time league starts everybody will know. i understand we lost harris but there are some nice jr that we have out there. please dont be surprise when you wake on saturday morning and see the score of some of the games. Duarte will be good.

O-cat, did u go to the monrovia/duarte passing league game?

Cat and LP Alum

I have seen Canada he is fast but i also know he got alot of his run after Duarte was well ahead. And he is tough i mentioned him number 22 i believe last season. I just am not sold on the players around him. I did not see a QB ready to follow Goldstein i know that #1 the WR/DB is back and he is nice but not much after those 2. And as far as LP the QB and barrentos are back...But the guys like the LB#6 and the rec. 87 really made big thing for that team last yr. I like Azusa and Workman cause they have the most returning players from last season. So i think it will be a closer battle for 1st than the last couple of seasons.

Observantcat,

Your game against Duarte is always a nice early season rivalry that is of interest for us.

Duarte is in our league and we know they're going to be tough. We also know that Monrovia is a potential playoff draw.

I know this guy Canada is a player. I'm just wondering how much of a player he can be when he's the featured back. His statistics are amazing, but was it because he was in the shadow of Chris Harris? I know many defenses focused on Harris so much that it can be easy to sneak in there.

I DO know their team speed is pretty legitimate.

why would anyone be interested in an LP game?? boring

Dubb & LP alum"
I'm coming from the other side of town but I will be the bearer of bad news. The Montview league belongs to Duarte, the top running back for Duarte is more than capable of having a 2500 yrd rushing season with the line he has and the talent he has (Jordan Canada jr.) Maybe you guys didn't get a chance to see him in action at anytime of the season, but he did get a chance to carry the ball a total of 18 time for 368 yards. Can you imagine if he has the ball twice that many times in one game?... get your db's ready for a foot race everytime he touches the ball. Monrovia Fan...Ps... we will try and put him out for a couple of games!!!

LP ALUM....I mean i have seen both teams play at least twice last season. And i saw the amount of talent both teams lost. An i only said passing league cause the guys that have replaced those studs are not equal to those guys from last season. But azusa and workman looked good as well as gladstone looked to have some nice peices. Thats why i dont see LP or Duarte winning league this season. To much talent lost. Especially when that talent carried there whole teams last season.

Dubb,

With all due respect, how can you factor a team's performance during the season based on how they perform in passing leagues?

I don't think the Warriors even won a passing league contest in the Arroyo passing tourney last year and you know what type of season we had.

Regardless, it looks like Duarte is on our schedule for the last game of the year, so for those who are interested, it should be a nice little showdown for both teams if things work out for the better on both ends.

Azusa and Workman? Come on.........

P-Town

It is "quite obvious" that you reside in Pomona, and hey, there is nothing wrong with that.

Moving forward, we over here at DRHS will be looking forward to the Bishop Amat game this year. Its all in friendly competition and nothing more.

Hey DRanchhhh:

1st off im not a Ganesha native so all that your saying means squat!! I reside in the city of Pomona and thats all. Please don't assume things cuz then you make an A$$ outta yourself!! & what's with you coming to the defense of sgvfootball fan?? are you 2 the same person & you 4got 2 change your s/n??

I went on your former blog and notice you’re a “frequent flyer” and enjoy participating on there as a fan often.

Here’s a list maybe tomorrow you could elaborate on how and why you chose these schools as your top ten if you were ranking the entire S.G.V. Obviously, this also sheds some light on insight to your rationale going into our own preseason ranking to begin this year’s football season. I don’t foresee any changes do you?

A few other questions I have for you are:

1. Do you seriously believe South Hills is at an entirely different level than the other teams in their own division like Charter Oak, Muir, Diamond Ranch, Bonita, and Arcadia and if so why?
2. If you rank South Hills ahead of Bishop Amat, are you implying that the Huskies would beat the Lancers in a head to head matchup?
3. How close or far away are teams like Charter Oak, Muir, Diamond Ranch, Bonita, and Arcadia from one another?
4. Does Muir ranked ahead of Diamond Ranch reflect that you think the Mustangs beat the Panthers when they play week 0?
5. Finally, are teams like San Dimas and South El Monte in your opinion just literally a level below the teams ranked above them and would teams from the San Antonio and Miramonte League consistently beat those teams anytime they competed versus one another?

By FredJ on August 7, 2008 12:22 PM
Okay, if I'm ranking the entire SGV, which is fitting considering the new regionalization of the CIF playoffs, it would look like this..

1. South Hills
2. Bishop Amat
3. Charter Oak
4. Muir
5. St. Francis
6. Diamond Ranch
7. Bonita
8. Arcadia
9. San Dimas
10. South El Monte

I welcome anyone and everyone to debate this topic because I would find very interesting and intriguing anyone else’s thoughts and feelings about this argument. For instance, where’s Glendora and West Covina? The Tartans and Bulldogs are ranked below Bonita, San Dimas AND South El Monte. Wow! Teams like Covina and Northview have fallen off that much that basically the Valle Vista League is a non factor period anymore compared to other teams in the Valley?

Gilmore leaving, Gilmore is 18 years old he can play at just about any school he wants. All he needs to do is rent/move into a room at a home in the area for the school that he would like to attend.

"i think amat should keep their school in the hood. it gives us something to talk about."

You think Amat is in the hood? Have you ever been to Loyola High? I work the area and can tell you that Amat's neighborhood is like Beverly Hills when compared to Loyola. Don't let the neighborhood fool you, people go to these schools for a reason.

Top Question
1.Is Tim Gilmore really leaving? No if he leaves he would have to sit out his senior year unless his coach signs a waiver for him to play varsity or unless he can show that he has moved to the area in which he is trying to attend.
2.How is AMAT going to do this year with a new head coach? I think they will turn it around 7-4 first round loss. I think they will start to build but the Pac-5 is tough.
3.What about Wilson? Wilson will be 6-5 and also take a first round Loss in the playoffs.
4.Does San Dimas really have a good chance in taking the Mid-Valley Division? S.D. is nice but they seemed to be a little over hyped to me. I like Nico but there a Wing-T- team if a defense can get a good grasp of how to attack the trap blocks and cut down there sweep game there offense can be stopped. I give them 65% chance of winning it all!
5.Will AMAT have another losing season? Not this year they have a good schdule to help them rebuild.
6.Is it Los Altos year to win the league? No Diamond Ranch and Bonita will battle for this title. I think it will be 1. Bonita 2. D.Ranch 3. Wilson. LA on the outside looking in.
7.Will Bassett win more games? I hate to say it but they will only win 1 game this yr.
8.Who would win this year Duarte or La Puente? Neither i have seen both in passing leagues and seen the players they lost last season. It will go to either Azusa or Workman.
9.How would cruthchfield replace Chris Harris? He cant be they have a Jr. Back number 22. He was nice last season fast and strong.
10.Do you have questions? Ya one question are there any game in the SGV that are going to shown on Fox Net this season?

MSGR Carroll, MSGR Carroll, MSGR Carroll...needs to move on down the road and impede the atheletic progress of some other Catholic school. MSGR Carroll should wake up and smell the money maker...football!!! The football stadium renovation/relocation in phase FOUR! C'mon you ol dinosaur, drop some coin into the program and watch it pay for all your other projects that you are milking the parents into paying for. Your time at the wheel has run it's course. Give up the reins and MOVE ON!!! AMAT needs a change! Doc Hem, keep up the good work but grab the reins from the old man! He's out of touch!!!

Top Question

2.How is AMAT going to do this year with a new head coach
3.What about Wilson?

i think amat should keep their school in the hood. it gives us something to talk about

There is more to the story as you need to understand the Rowland connection as various properties in West Covina would be available to Amat. I believe there is an 84ish grad that is married to or a relative of the Rowlands. The Rowlands also hold title to property that could be leveraged to gain access to other valuable property in West Covina, Industry and I even understand Chino.

West Covina USD also may be looking to get some cash infusion and like Covina sell some property.

The Rowland connection is as in Rowland/Workman homestead dating back to the 1800's and originally it was most of what is now the ESG.

Amat Alum
Maybe Pat Hayden could could put some funding together!!!!

AmatFE,
Ok, just where do you propose to move the school? Try and find the 20-30 acres minimum needed in the SGV. The area where Roski wants to build his stadium is the only thing that comes to mind. How much is the land going to cost not to mention the construction costs?

The only way that is going to happen is if Ed Roski names Amat sole benficiary in his will.

AmatFE ,

Interesting that you bring the Amat campus up, and maybe with Freds old ties he can sniff out some facts from "the other side". In the early '90s some "very influential" (read wealthy) Amat alums were exploring the possibility of purchasing/leasing the Edgewood property. Larger campus, slightly newer, bigger gym, pool, tennis courts, and still room for an on-campus stadium. According to my conversations with these alums, they were making some headway, negotiations were open and the Amat property and cash were in the mix. The story goes that MSGr Carroll nixed the negotiations and that is what began to open the rift between he and many alums. So the story goes.

This rift ultimately led to the new gym, originally proposed as the "Alumni Pavilion" being renamed the generic "Student Activity Center". The common perception is that the generic name allows it to be renamed after MSGr after he retires. To me, once a Swordsman always a Swordsman, and no matter how many buildings he erects, MSGr will NEVER be a Lancer.

MANY alums are ticked that the old gym, named after legendary Amat icon Tate Duff was leveled with nothing named after him in its' place. Even the Tate Duff Hall of Fame/Weight Room/Locker Room would have satisfied most.

Most ideas that don't originate from MSGr's office tend to get set aside - as he seems to want a majority of the credit. We often get the sense that, deep down, improvements are not made for the betterment of the school, but to build his legacy. Many of us are counting the days and it couldn't come soon enough.

Amat Fans
Had an interesting Idea!!Would it be possible for Amat to relocate to another location, there are plenty of availible empty school sights that might be able to draw a larger pool of better players and students to us.It might be time for a new beginning in a better area.Other school have done it in the past.Pepperdine University moved to malibu from south Central Los Angeles years ago and it has seemed to work out good for them.

The reason that Amat is not enjoying the success that it once did is due to the rise of the other schools in the area. When i was growing up in the mid 90's and Amat was rolling out CIF titles like it was nothing they controlled the SGV recruiting. There players came from all over the SGV. Guys like Deen from S.Hills would be the starter at Amat had this been 98' and not 2008'. Or Gilmore would be rolling down the Field like Daylon Mc. Did against Mater Dei in 95'. Its just that in the years 99' till now Amat has not one a single CIF. And S.hills,Los Altos,West Covina just to name a couple have put up 2 or 3 titles. And the truth is they are shipping out as many college players as Amat does. Now the truth is Amat is still private and has to be paid for. And the economics of the SGV is not the same families can not afford to take the chance to pay a fee and hope that it leads to a college scholorship. I mean lets be real that what it all comes down to EXPOSER and Colleges. So when families see that my kid can go to S.Hills and still go to UCLA or Colorado. I am going to send them there. So the truth is AMAT has to Win and win big soon over the NEXT 5 years to restore it to the true power of the SGV. Our they may have to step down to the division like ST.Paul. And as a fan of SGV i hope Amat stays a D1 Program we need that exposure here.

SGVFOOTBALLFAN...

not possible....if he does that will be considered a character flaw with "recruiters", also if it is not legitimate, he would have to sit his senior year out. Im sure his people are not moving to the diamond bar/ Phillips Ranch area....So I wold defitnitely say no way, no how although he would be a great addition..

Fred Rumor has it,
Tim Gilmore from Hacienda Heights Wilson is looking into transferring to Diamond Ranch.Could this be true!!!

OK Mike the Clone you SOB how did you get the Bejing Olympic Commitee to play Scotland the Brave as the athletes marched in.................
GO Glendora

Hello All, I happened across this info from the NCAA and thought I would share it with the masses.

FOOTBALL
306,227 — number of high school seniors playing football

17,501 — number of NCAA freshman positions in football

3% – percentage of athletes who transition from high school to NCAA football

250 — number of NCAA athletes drafted into pro football

.08% — percentage of high school athletes who eventually transition to pro football

It is also interesting to note the requirements to be eligible for participation in a NCAA sport. That info is found on the NCAA website as well. In a nutshell, impress on your student/ player to get the grades.

Bishop Amat all day baby. the best team in the vally and they are determined to be the best this season.

Bishop Amat bashers just don't "Get It"

Amat fans- Amat should just pull the St. Paul drop out of Pac 5 go to a lower division.

They can win a CIF championship and feel good about themselves once again.

As long as Amat only has a 3 day off season program they won't compete in Pac 5, because everyone has talent, everyone has a good coach. Best of luck...

Tough being SGV D1 Team,

You first. D1 school this, D1 school that, Look at their schedule for the past couple of years. I dont even want to bring DR into this. You people are living in the past. There are far to many schools out there to choose from now. So what, if they produced this person and that person. BA is only as good as the year that they play. Same thing goes for DR, SH, CO, SD and any other school in the SGV. Hail, we dont know if South El Monte might blow the shyt out their schedule this year. BA is old and washed up and they are depending on former players who became stars to bring in there kids. Lets talk about the men who coached your former stars, the guys who put in year after year to make sure kids went off to college!! REAL COACHES, Im talkin' about. Im sure CO, LA, Muir, Covina etc. has sent plenty kids to D1 colleges over the years. BA is like "Larry Holmes" and other schools in the SGV are like "Floyd Mayweather". Get off of BA's Swing Strap.

and P-Town:

Are you feeling sad that you couldnt be a part of what Layton is doing at DR. Everybody in the blog, "well most" know that we reside right here in Pomona, well technically Phillips Ranch/ Diamond Bar, hence the name Diamond Ranch. Your a Ganesha native, so is Roddy Layton, in fact he graduated from Ganesha. Its not about the city the school is in, its about the coaches at that program and what they contribute to the community, school, and kids within that football program..Get a grip and please, PLEASE utilize our former coaches to the best of your ability and maybe you guys will see something other than a 0-10 season with no fans.!!!

So Fred your going to stick with your idea and give Amat all the coverage in the world.. Nice.. I know this is only a blog and all but damn don't you think that the other teams in the SGV that are actually winning deserve this coverage?? Who cares that Amat has the biggest blog following.. Wouldn't it be great for the SGV if you gave coverage to those schools that are winning right now?? Why not play up South Hills, San Dimas, Glendora, D-Ranch, Bonita, Charter Oak, West Covina, Northview, South El Monte, La Puent, Duarte Baldwin Park?? Is it not great for the valley that these schools are winning??

Doggy Dogg

Don't believe it. The kid is average at best. Don't belive me? Watch him not develop over the next four years...

Looks like Snoop's son has passed on the SGV football teams and is playing for Long Beach Poly. Not a bad choice, Poly has more alum in the pros than some colleges. He's also being coached by Steve Clarkson so he must have talent because Clarkson is selective in who he coaches.

FRED your a crack up who the hell cares about amats sorry ass team talk about all the schools thats what the tribune does its here for all the schools not one.

FRED your a crack up who the hell cares about amats sorry ass team talk about all the schools thats what the tribune does its here for all the schools not one.

FredJ here to tell football fan that I was a kid in the 70s and did my high school thing in the 80s...

Fellow Lancers,
Have you noticed that the majority of the AMAT bashers either ditched or slept during their English classes .

Hey SGVFootballFan, Since when is D-Ranch from Diamond Bar?? Correct me if i'm wrong but yeah they kids from Diamond Bar buts that a POMONA school...

SGVFOOTBALLFAN,
Amat is a D1 program and that is where the hype is. Are they good enuf to win championships there, well in the past yes but there are other programs that have grown up in SGV, SHHS, DR, etc but Amat is Amat and they have never left the D1 so this is what SGV clings to as there big boy. Until other programs in this area get moved up by CIF to the D1 elite then Amat is the best show in town. It is what it is so the best thing to do is get behind the only D1 team in SGV and wish them luck, if the tabels were turn and Amat was D7 and SH or Los Altos were D1 you could bet Amat fans would be pulling for the SGV D1.

Fred
I don't know where you grew up but i'm sure you were a kid in the mid 90's.I guess what i'm trying to say and what i have said before is the SGV is a " MUCH" differant place than it was years ago and i'm almost positive that Amat will never have the type of pool players that it once had. It's hard for Amat to compete when there are so many great public schools out their for kids to go to and it's a free education. Verbum Dei had great basketball teams years ago because they had a great pool of players in that area at the time. That community has changed and so you have it.Why don't you try to focus a little more on schools in the area like Dranch or Sdimas. I know Roddy Layton is trying to build something special in Diamond Bar and I think he deserves a little attention. You seem a "LITTLE" obsessed with Amat and think maybe someday they will be able to compete with top teams again like Mater Dei,Mission Viego or Corona teams.Fred you have to have the pool of players within an ares to compete at that level. So lets try to focus your time a little more on other programs than Amat.

Lancer 2 Dn: Well said !!

Fellow Amat Alumni and Fans Base please note: we will get the backers and the bashers once this starts. In a bashers case lets not try to engage them in their stupid remarks with a win or loss. I am looking forward to the season win or lose because there is no better excitement then to be at a Bishop Amat football game on a Friday Night. I feel good about this coming season, there is a certain energy around Amat right now and I feel Hagerty and staff are going to come through big in their first season. Bashers will tear into and bash this post but again I refuse to engage them in a hostile exchange of words. As Always Amat Will Shine! In Closing, Good Luck to all SGV teams this year. Strap them up lets play ball and lets have a major injury free season. May the Grace of God be with you all.

tom. this blog is full of old amat whiners with too much time on their hands. I think its great fred is doing this so when amat gets thier ass kicked every week we can all laugh out asses off.

Tom,
You turkey, we haven't been the subject of a thread for well over a month. Try reading other threads besides ours.

Tom: Just one of many topics. But we will take the coverage, win or lose.Hopefully the upside !!

Tom relax, it's one thread, once a week. It's quite obvious that Bishop Amat has the biggest blog following, a storied tradition, so why not play it up. When and if Bishop Amat starts winning again, it will be great for the Valley.

so is this the bishop amat website now? cuz i thought it was suppose to be about all sgv?
