COVINA - With more than half of the San Gabriel Valley High School football teams opting for "Week 0" games the first week of September, "Hell Week" started early on Monday, which begins the grueling journey of two-a-day practices, sore muscles and ice packs.
New coach Steve Hagerty began his hopeful task of restoring Bishop Amat's proud tradition, while West Covina got a jump on others by starting late last week.
Bishop Amat and West Covina start the season on Sept. 5, with the Lancers on the road against Los Osos while the Bulldogs host El Rancho.
"There's finally light at the end of the tunnel," Bulldogs coach Mike Maggiore said. "We have three more weeks to go after talking about things for the last eight months. The kids are excited."
To continue, click thread

After 41 years of coaching and more than two decades at Charter Oak, coach Lou Farrar said the grass still smells the same and his feelings about the first days of practice haven't changed either.
The Chargers opened camp on Monday in preparation for their Sept. 5 opener at Aliso Niguel.
"I don't ever get tired of it," Farrar said. "It's a special day for the coaches, because this is our sanctuary. It's our vacation from the rest of the world.
"As I was walking off the field this morning there wasn't an arthritic pain in my body. I'm sure it will hurt like (heck) when I get back to the house, but that excitement, the anticipation, it just takes all the pain away."
To prepare for the long hot days, there were three tables and more than 60 gallons of water available to players throughout Charter Oak's practice, which brought a chuckle from Farrar, who recalled his days of playing for Charter Oak in the 1960s.
"When you got thirsty in my day you found a water fountain," Farrar said. "I don't even think players brought water bottles to practice. I sure as heck know our coaches didn't bring them for us."
Practice sessions have evolved, too.
"We don't do monkey rolls, bear crawls, and all that sort of stuff anymore," Farrar said. "And when you got something taped up back then, it was a sign you were hurt and people came after you. Now, everyone gets taped up."
All joking aside, Farrar said setting a tone in the opening practice is vital, and few do it better than the Chargers, who have one of the longest-tenured coaching staffs in they Valley.
"We have a certain way we do things, and we do them on time and with maximum effort," Farrar said. "We had a couple kids who transferred in, so this was the first time they went through this. I asked one of them, `what do you think of this?' He said he had never been through anything like it. "So I said, `Welcome to Charter Oak, this is how we run things. We don't walk and we say yes sir, no sir.' I think he got it."
The Chargers' freshman players were the first to arrive at 5:30 a.m., with Farrar pulling one off to the side later in the morning.
"He was a little nervous, a little scared," Farrar said. "I told him it was normal, and that this is a time in his life he must enjoy because it will be over before he knows it."
Some things were normal, however, like smooth-throwing third-year starting quarterback Chris Allen, who not only led the Chargers to back-to-back Miramonte League titles but also the CIF-SS Divisional finals in 2006 and the semifinals in 2007.
"Since the spring he's been doing everything we've asked, he's put in the training, has done well at camps, and he knows our system inside and out," Farrar said of Allen, coming off a season in which he threw for 1,575 yards and 15 touchdowns. "Adam Muema, our junior running back, has been sensational too.
"Between the two of those guys, that's a lot of offense. We feel good about our ability to move the chains and put points on the board."

Ex-Wilson Play,

As stated in the pass no one really knows. I asked the question to a couple of players on the varisty team yesterday. They told me "We don't know he keeps changing it" I saw him running some I back yesterday.

What offense are they running, all this talk and not one person can really say anything relevant to football.

football jones,

Maybe the kids read the blogs, but they are also on the field being coached by him. The upper classmen have been coached in the passed by Coach O, who is a teacher, they see the difference. Hoyd should have been working with the kids these last few months instead of wasting his time with fundraisers so he can pay is coaches more money.

Did you know that his freshmen summer camp was only eight days, the freshmen coach didn't want to make the drive from Orange County. Did you also know that they started spring camp last Monday 18th while everyone else started two a days on the 14th.

ASAP said:

Coach Hoyd's offense is simple. Give the ball to Gilmore and hope that the other teams tackle like his previous teams. He has no cofidence in any of Wilson kids when he highlites one kids accomplishments and not the other. It takes a team to win games not a player. Look at his website "Watch Gilmore Hightlites".

Hoyd is going around to the booster club board and asking them to come on the blog and say nice things about him. That is classic !!!!

Another great one is the kids are questioning what offense they are running. Hoyd changes his mind every couple of weeks. You can't blame the guy, he has zero offensive experience.

AHA!!! Now we have the bottom line to the whole negative PR blitz. It's a turf war!!!!! OMG.
Would you like a list, like the list of PW players, to prove the absence of the argument about the 'taxpayer's' property. March on up to the White House and demand your access as a taxpayer. You're making a mockery of yourself and your program. Is this what the governing body of Pop Warner wants to place out there? The School programs take priority and the Board of Directors first responsibility is the students of their district. The community claim of ownership is as a constituency only not that Pop Warner has a claim on a school. Grow UP!!!!

sevenduece,

All of Wilson High School property belongs to the tax payers of this community including the fields. The fields are governed by the school board and no one else. They determine Priority and them alone.

The board also had this situation under control until Coach Hoys decided to make is own agenda. The coach is an employee of the tax payers. He needs to follow rules just like we pay taxes.

Would it now be fair to say that all of this acrimony has been due to the Wilson Administrators selecting a coach who was not approved of by the ruling class in the local kiddie ball program? Worse, somebody from another kiddie ball program was selected. Horrors!

Almost like being passed over or ignored, like I suggested almost a month ago, huh?

Popwarner,

It seems they have let the cat out of the bag. You guys are the ones that have started all this.

But the truth is Popwarner kids and parents want to play for a winning program.

With little or no freshman at Wilson it looks to me Wilson will have no incoming Talent. Which will make for alot of mediocre years at Wilson.

Hoyd has dug his own grave. You just don't fool around with the community like that. Parents and kids never forget when they have been dealt a bad deal.

To be honest with you I am kind of Happy this is all happening, Los Altos has always been the school of choice for my son and me.

I mean it's been 5 years since LA was on top. I look foward to watching my son play for LA and winning that Wheel YEAR after YEAR.

Thank you,

Give Hyod a chance, let him build his program.

I have nothing at stake and have no one involved in the situation but I have watched the situation unfold the last few years.

It seems that the HLP Pop Warner people are stiring it up.

If you remember HLP was formed by the people that didn't get their way at the Hacienda Heights JAA league. They were causing decension in the community back then. HLP leadership was a group of parents that wanted to kiss the coaches of LA and Wilson's butt before their children got there. Now that the coaching at Wilson has changed and they have no input they are stirring it up. Remember they wanted one of their past coaches with some freshman experience to be the head coach. I am not a Clegg favorite and this comes from way back to his Amat days but he made the right decision in going outside of that little inner circle that they call the HLP Pop Warner. As for the field issue, the high school has the first rights to their fields, HLP believes it is their right. Coach Hoyd has the right to practice any time that he wants as long as it is withing the CIF guidelines. Back off the coach and let him go to work, the more that he has to meet with these people the more time he has to take away from his job as a head coach trying to build a program.

As for all the Pop Warner records, that is thrown out the door in high school. High school football is a different monster. Pop Warner and JAA is where the fundamentals of football are first instilled into these young men. A good POP Warner of JAA player doesn't always equate to a good high school player, we see it every year.

Just give Hoyd his space to build the team and HLP get off his back. Playing on his field you should be supporting him.

There are 3 - 4 people that are bombarding this blog and there are dozens that have been trying to defend against the hatred. There are clear lies that have been posted, all the way to using other people's names. It's really easy to spot. I'm thinking the Pop Warner's are trying to take over the Wilson facility. What's being taught here. By the way, there is a way to trace sites through IP addresses. If it came up to a legal issue, there are ways to do it. It's almost there now from the sounds of it.

I following quote from WTH kind of sums it up.

So instead of working it out, they go back into the box and complain and spread vicious rumors. Well we are in high school, but I believe some got confused and thought they were still students IN school.

I also wanted to inform you that our last meeting was 100% improved and united. I am certain that All the bad apples will go away. We will continue to work together and help the Coach, our school and our players succeed in every way possible.
Fred you are more than welcomed to come and join our meeting. Then maybe you will take this blog off and let people talk it out. At the meeting everyone is welcomed to express their opinions.

However, I more than anything am a football player(once always j/l a Marine)and most of all I am an SGV football fan.

Personally, I feel that the SGV needs to get it's stuff together and it's rears out of it's respective head and follow suit with the rest of the prestigeous So.Cal football scene, which is instead of spreading it's talent out, pick the best couple programs and load them with talent to better compete with the rest of the HS football landscape.

Hence the Santa Clarita Valley... Hart, Canyon Country, Valencia(although on the decline), and West Ranch(who is on the rise. Hmmm...)are top notch and all the schools, well... have you ever heard of them?
Sure the OC and IE have more but they are also bigger areas...multiply the land multiply the number of successful schools by square mile.
make sense?

In my opinion the best public school program in the area for various reasons including tradition and coaching is Los Altos. If parents from Chino Hills to El Monte and Montebello to Covina would get it through there heads that top level football is played with DEPTH and NOT one-man shows ala San Dimas, SEM, and Wilson to name a few, and that they don't HAVE to send their kid to Amat or Damien(BTW, LA defeated the Spartans 3 out of 4 games), but rather have an alternative then the South Hills, Charter Oaks, and Los Altos' of the SGV can begin to have true success or in the case of SH and LA go back to their top flight glory days.
And believe it or not the Amats and Damiens will be more successful in part to the NEW rivalries that can transpire rather trying to recruit against the "up and coming" Cantwell type programs.

SGV wake up!!! Stop it with the A.Y.S.O. mentality unless you want your football to continue to be mediocre and desirvingly so disrestpected.

Parents HLP is a great program.

p.s. I sent my little brother who is from Azusa to LA. Gave him a choice between Amat or LA. He made the choice.

Hoyd is crazy, the best youth football program in the Valley and you piss off all those parents. All Hoyd has is Gilmore and he is going to run him to the ground. That Pop Warner Midget team would destroy Hoyd's JV team, what a joke. Hoyd had 10 freshmen show up to practice on Monday. Hoyd was the joke of Orange County now he is the joke of Orange County San Gabriel Valley. Please go back to Tustin.

Who is going to be number 8?????????

Hey, pick one NAME, and stick with it. You think you're being sneaky by using different NAMES, and nobody's going to notice? What a bunch of mental midgets they've got up on that hill at Wilson.

As far as your program goes, welcome to your own nightmare. Your problems began when the three stooges started up the HLP Pop Warner program to begin with. You made your bed...

EVV said:

Just to give you an example how much Hoyd cares about the kids in this community. He does care about the future of Wilson's football program.

He does not have freshman team. Then he turns around pisses off the only feeder program in the area Pop Warner. Wilson not have a freshman team next year either. Pop Warner will feed every program in the area but Wilson. Wilson football is over.

Pop Warner help LA back to its pass glory and remove all your wilcat teams and conver them into LA Conquerors.

Hoyd your done

Pop

I was at both those games two years ago. Those games were a perfect example of Hoyd's coaching ability. The regular season game HLP Wildcats had a running clock in the third quarter on Hoyd's defense. Then the HLP Wildcats team played them in the semis. HLP Wildcats had a running clock on Hoyd's defense in the second quarter in that game. Hoyd made some great defensive adjustments, he figured out away to loss faster. That must be why Tustin would let Hoyd coach the defensive any more. Boy Wilson is in trouble if Hoyd is a defense specialist, because Tustin had no defense. Well last year they did figure out how they could win, cheat.

Neutral perspective said:

HLP,
take Wilson's name off your awesome program.
You should be and pretty much are an exclusive LA feeder anyway.

Hoydisajoke!!!!
if you haven't noticed Fred is an avid Bishop Amat fan. He only reports the "other" stuff when he feels that he needs to "even" it out a bit.

WTH said:

The really joke is that kids did not even have there helmets, on much less there pads. I think Hoyd still thinks he is in a Passing league or Flag football.

Hoyd you crossed the wrong people. Pop Warner has you in there bullseye. There going to rip you a part just like the did your sorry teams from the past.

SGV footballs teach this outsider what football really is.

Hoyd is a JOKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! said:

Well now let’s see who is wrong. Wilson practice yesterday, finally. Well they had 50 kids on the field practicing with Hoyd. O Yea did I forget to mention that he had the freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors practicing with him. Now let’s do the math Los Altos had 65 kids practicing on the FRESHMEN team, and Wilson had 50 kids out for the whole program. O what happen to the thirteen coaches, we only saw five and two of them granulated from High School last year. That is five coaches for the whole football program and two of them are kids. Like we all said it isn’t too late you can still transfer out to a school with a football program.

GREAT JOB HOYD

What is so great about the Hoyd supporters comments, no facts. All they are talking about is parties that Hoyd puts on. They get their kids to write Fred how good of a job Hoyd is doing. Fred comes on this blog and talks about the kids being happy.

Well at least some of the 50 kids are happy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I also heard that Hoyd has gone out of his way to piss off the local Pop Warner league. He decides to change his practice to the same time as the youth football league and he also decided to have his fifty kid’s practice where HLP Pop Warner is suppose to practice. So let’s see what he has done in his first few months as head coach at Wilson. Chased away so many kids that they don’t have a freshmen team that is something that Workman and Bassett the weakest football schools in the area can’t do. He has pissed off the local youth football program so much they are looking for a new location to practice and play.

Do you know what amazes me Tustin Pop Warner won’t even let Hoyd coach the defensive. Hoyd is currently a linebacker coach on the Tustin Pop Warner Jr. Midget team. But Wilson will hire this JOKE as a Head Coach of a football program, or at least what use to be a football program.

GREAT JOB CLEGG

Fred, now we gave him a chance. Why don't you go down and see what is going on and report the TRUTH. Not that some 14 year old kid is happy or the party was fun. Lets report some facts, that is what you get paid for.
