The Top Ten Beasts on the D-Line

This is the all-encompassing top ten defensive line players in the San Gabriel Valley. It was difficult narrowing this to ten because I could have easily put out a top 20 list out with so many qualified candidates. But again, I think I'm close ....

Above: Bishop Amat's Brent Seals.

1. Brent Seals, Bishop Amat, Sr, LB, 6--0, 190 - Maybe undersized at the next level where he will likely be a SS, but the best linebacker in the San Gabriel Valley after earning Serra League first team honors as a junior and Tribune second team honors.

2. Tyler Perri, Charter Oak, Sr, DE, 6-3, 230 - The Chargers' best returning pass rusher was a CIF-Southwest first team selections and Miramonte league first-teamer and has done well in camps. Has great size at this level and also can play tight end.

3. Alex Barrios, South Hills, Sr, DE, 6-2, 200 - Following Kebin Umodo and Damon Kuklinski is a third-year starting defensive end who earned San Antonio first team honors last season. He's one of the valley's hardest hitters, and rushes the passer as well as anyone.

4. Isaiah Bowens, Bishop Amat, Sr., LB, 6-2, 200 - Another talented player on the Lancers' defensive front, where he earned second team All-Serra league honors as a junior. He led the team in sacks (7.5) and already has verballed UCLA.

5. Wayne Goss, South Hills, Sr., OLB, 5-11, 193 - Just think Barrios, Goss and Chris Bowden are all on this defensive front. That's scary. Goss is another returning first team all-san antoino and Tribune first team selection.

6. Jeff Gelalich, Bonita, Sr., LB, 6-0, 185 - A great athlete and returning Miramonte League first team selection. He's going to USC to play baseball but is a natural hard-hitting linebacker who should have a tremendous senior season.

7. Bryan Bonilla, Diamond Ranch, Sr, LB, 6-0, 193 - A returning Miramonte League first team selection has reportedly looked great at the combines and coach Roddy Layton continues to pump him up. No reason he shouldn't be one of the top performers this fall.

8. Chad Young, Glendora, LB, Sr, 5-9, 201 - What else do you need to know other than he was the Sierra League defensive MVP. Call him undersized or whatever, but the bottom line is he gets the job done.

9. Alonzo Nevarez, West Covina, LB, Sr, 6-2, 187 - Perfect size and speed for a high school linebacker. Earned San Antonio league first team honors and with Albert Cid going both ways, gives the Bulldogs a great one-two punch on the D-Line.

10. Chris Bowden, South Hills, LB, 6-2, 230 - This gives the Huskies three returning first team players on its defensive front. Scary, isn't it. If defense wins championships, how you gonna argue against the Huskies, who also have highly touted Cameron Deen at QB.

Brent Seals' 2007 highlights (#9)

put down the pot mendozer

I go with all the amat players n play with them. all of them that are mentioned here are fantastic players. strong, fast, quick, everything. you will be seeing them in the nfl if they keep it up

good idea taking down all those dumb amat comments

why dont you mind your own business?

Hoodrat,
Why don't you walk up to Seals and tell that to him face to face?

little sister-Seals is considering Cal, Stanford, UCLA and a couple of Ivy's. They are the"little sisters of the poor?" where'd you go?

yeah getting ready for college football at little sisters of the poor university

Hey Seals

Let them keep talking and writing about you. Next year this time, you along with Price, Bowens, and possibly Preito and Mafee will be getting ready for college football. Every year College football gets a prospect for Amat's football program. Have we missed a year????? I doubt it. "Who luv's baby"

I Think Brent Seals is SUPER sexy and his little video thingy is amazing and everyone who puts a bad comment is just jealous because they are not number one and not as sexy!!!!!!!

you whiners need to get a life. this is the new age of high school football with blogs and peoples comments. 1st amendment gives us the right to freedom of speech good or bad. If you dont like it dont come here or dont read it or better yet dont comment and move on to the next post

A Fan
Are you a coach or what?

lucky to make the list? watch the games not passing league!!
defence mvp sierra league
1st team all area
1st team all cif
and has been a varsity starter for 3 years
511 240

who will match that on this list?

I've seen 8 out of the 10 compete. chad young is lucky to have made the list. Saw him at SC and SH passing league. He's lucky if he's 5'10" 220-230 sounds about right. slow feet when dropping back in pass coverage. better suited as a noseguard. Seals,Perri,Barrios all good spots. Bowens not a bad spot maybe 4,5, or 6. Bonilla maybe a little higher good kid, good nose for the ball good size needs more weight. Goss ranked to high. Not a run stop threat gets beat on the outside to often. Watch Los altos and WC film. good kid though and hard hitter. good work ethic. Bowden should be higher. good size great nose for the ball. forces teams to adjust and go outside. Like Goss 3 year starter. Needs to work on temperment.

Chad "The Thing" Young is all 230-240, but not 6'! He is a beast and should have been higher on the chart, but he'll prove his point. Good luck knocking him down!

Glendora Fan

Wishful thinking!

Call Chad Young undersized but the specs posted were incorrect. He is 6 foot 240lbs and just turned 17... undersized?...

FBFan

I been reading your posts on other threads and like your comments about the kids.

It does get out of hand, and all you can say is that if they're not talking about you, you're not doing your job. Doesn’t make the ripping on kids right, but somehow just goes with the territory.

The kids will provide a lot of excitement this year and hopefully Fred will provide better control if it crosses the line.

Keep being a supporter for the kids.

HEY SGV!--- Not dissen Perri, he alreddy got picked, just remember a while back after some good comment about him he replied, don't talk about me witout mentioning Williams, we are a pair the CO BOOKENDS!. Thats class and watch the BOOKENDS in action. So some good praise about Williams is deserved.

sgvfan,

If that was the sorriest highlight film you've ever seen, then the others must have been awesome. You say that is footwork is terrible, but he redirects to the ball carrier several times and makes some very solid plays.

I saw him get downfield and get off more than one block at times in order to be in on a tackle. It's obvious he has a great swarm to the football. Keep up the good work Brent, and no, I'm not an Amat fan.

Fred, comments like the one sgvfan just posted are the reason why this blog should go away. How dare someone come on here and bash a kid that's working hard. There are a bunch of people on here who know absolutely nothing and say bad things about kids and coaches.

Why should a 17 year old kid have to put up with this garbage. There are several players that people say are slow, weak, etc. that are great high school ball players. We're not talking about professional athletes here, we're talking about HIGH SCHOOL KIDS!!!!

The coaches throughout the SGV should come together and find a way to get rid of this thing.

WOW that has to be the sorriest highlight tape i've ever seen. All it shows is that Amat is terrible. And Brent Seals, stick to the line because your feetwork are terrible. Well it figures Amat does need all the help they can get.

Yeah. Alex Barrios is weighed in at 228.6 at the CSA camp at Servite.

If you were to see Chad Young out of Glendora in person the last word you would use to describe him would be undersized. A more realistic height and weight would be 5'11' 230

Why given Williams so much love but not Perri?? Perri has the stats size an playing time on him! come on slacker! seals an barrios are studs also!

Fred, how about front best ofense best defense

Don ,AMEN on EVAN Williams 3rd yr Varsity and wired for sucess. Note that he was 1st team Miramont and 2nd team CIF SW Div. Must mean something if CO coaches don' talk him up, who knows?

The Goss Family.

Yes that is very special.

Father and Son playing High School Football for the same school, same stadium etc.

The Father, like his son was a fine player.

He had a fine senior season…. That is until he matched up against the Tommy’s Fueled Edgewood Lineman of the mid 80's.

Whats all this talk on goss and seal?? how about Perri an Young . Heard they have alot of talent maybe guys to watch this year!! Them only living a couple mins away!!

Husky player, Goss sr. was a stud in his playing days at S.H. I played with him and meant that as a joke. I often forget that it doesn't come across that way in text. Jr. plays like his pops, TOUGH and HARD.

i totally agree with JelloPuddingPop amat has a number of great d-1 athletes jesse prieto also may be a d-1 athlete for the class of 09 he is a great lineback and he could also play runningback very well, i like his agressiveness and his speed. and also Darien Johnson he might be the only d-1 athlete at amat for the class of 2010. i heard he won the best db award at the oregon foorball camp.

Fred,

Jeff Gelalich will be playing baseball for UCLA, (your alum?), not USC. Thanks.

Two things stand out seeing the Bishop Amat film that highlights Brent Seals.

1) Amat plays on a diffrent level. Their pursuit angle, speed and "team" tackling is superior to ANYTHING I've seen in a long time. NO ONE in the SGV comes close. NOT EVEN SOUTH HILLS. South HIlls may look good and does have a good mix of outstanding athletes and exceptional coaches and program.

2) Verti must have been doing something right. Look at the amount of Div 1 "attention" athletes and "signees" he's coached. Everyone from Mc Bride to Austin to Wells to Fletcher to Price to Bowens. And NO I don't believe THEY came "football ready" before they came to Amat.

But one thing I did notice about Seals and it's one of the things I spoke to Verti about once concerning another player---the little things. Notice how Seals, at least in the film is never really "SET" before the play. Great instincts and outstanding technique and pursuit but he's always "late". Can this be corrected at the next level absolutely but at Amat that's one of the reasons the lost close games and a reason Verti is out...assistant coaches. That Seals "thing" is glaring, why didn't someone catch that?

Last thing I noticed about the film is on one of the last plays I think #43 pushes #21 to GET TO THE BALL!!! He went "Lucdah" on him, "get out dah way! THAT"S PURSUIT !!! Thing is Amat "already" had 4 tacklers "on the ball"...something to think about when you compare your school to Amat. "APPLES AND ORANGES".

One question I do have and I'll rely on the "brain trust" at Amat is ...How in the world could things have gone so bad at Riverside Poly? No technque, no passion, no skill, no nada....I mean Damien handled them like they were playing a bad JV team. Poly WAS horrible from the Varsity to the Freshmen. HOW????

Well today is another day and sometimes it's about environment....just ask the Guerrero basketball wiz kid in a couple of years.

JFR.
yesterday morning when I read the blog, Goss's name wasn't on the list. So one of the players asked why. Leave his dad out of this he is a good guy. sgvfootballfan yes colleges are looking at him I think his gpa is 3.9 or better.

Fred, check out sophomore phenom at Walnut, he is a MAN among boys. He's playing D-end for the Mustangs, and Dwayne Walker is already looking at him since the beginning of Sophomore year. He's 6 foot 3 , 235 pounds and played TB for the mustang getting first team all league as a sophomore. Asking any of the opposing Coaches in the San Antonio league he;s the real deal. He's a phenom.

Im just a fan

1. Fred I agree you must D-line and LB 's must have their own distinguished column. Its very unfair to these players to put the best players in the front seven.

2. I agree with you that Brent Seals is one the best Football Players in the Valley. He's getting a lot of flack for the reason he's a tweener at the college level. He could be a great weak side linebacker at College level but recruits doubt his size for that position. You said at Strong safety which he could also play, but he has to increase his speed even though he runs a 4.6 forty, then want to see faster.

3. Isaiah Bowens is a pure athlete, He's playing d-end for the lancers this year and could have a stellar years despite his late start. He is a physical specimen, he will play linebacker for Walker in college, He is gonna have to develop LB skill right away cause D-end and LB are different, especially instinctively.

4. J.R. Maffie is another candidate for LB. Fred, if you havent seen him then you should talk to Hagerty or Difiori about Maffie's ability. He is going to be a three Year starter for the lancers. He started at SS is sophomore you and then was sent LB for his Junior year, he's really stellar fred, He's 6 to 6'1 and weighs aroung 195 pds runs a 4.5 forty. He Junior year wasnt as great as his sophomore year and people believe it was because the shoulder injury he had in the summer.

5. Fred, if you decide to separate the two categories. I ask quietly that you really check out these schools, like Aram use to do before he came out with the Top Ten of any position. I mean, I've been in the Valley for over 20 years now watching different games, going to different practices and so on. Please take your time and evaluate the best you can, which all we can ask for. We know youre working hard.

Man i want to see the top runningback's and top db's

Fred,

If you were separating D Line and Linebackers you would have to include Kyle Withem of San Dimas for the LB's. he hits hard, he is smart and hounds the ball.

Fred
This kid from South Hills Wayne Goss is only 5-9 at best.Is he attracting any college recruiters.Maybe the "GURU" is availible for this answer.Or maybe he's talking to people about a coaching job !!!!!!
"WHAT EVER"

FRED SHOW AS MUCH RESPECT TO DEFENSE, AS YOU DO TO OFFENSE.. SEPARATE D-LINE FROM LINEBACKERS

Goss fan,
Your reading skills are as good as Wayne Goss SR. He is on the list. SR was much bigger, stronger, and much much slower but could always stop the run!

Isaiah bowens is 215lbs to be exact. . . and jesse prieto from amat should be at the top of this list

Every tackle made 5 plus yards down field i dont get it kid way overrated.

Every tackle made 5 plus yards down field i dont get it kid way overrated.

Freddy:

I don't know why you are so high on Seals. Yes, Seals is good but he is not even the best LB on his own team. UCLA-bound Bowens is the best DL/LB in the area, hands down, no question about it.

Hey Fred I thought this was a TOP TEN D-LINE LIST?? Whats with all the LB's?? You only included 2 D-Lineman and they were DE's where's the DT'S & NT's???

Husky Fred,
Just because Edgewood and SH share the same colors doesn't mean you should be blinded by old loyalties. Your BUDDY Bogan's boys are nice players but give me a break, three in the top ten? You very well could have two 1st team All-Valley d-tackles that play on the same team this year. Please seperate the good lineman from the the good backers. P.S. Lineman= hand on ground, Backer= standing on TWO FEET.

Seals is shown making lots of tackles and stops and has a good nose for the ball, but I guess what this blog may be looking for is a a big time knock the snot out of your nose HITTER! I see none of that with Seals, altho he does get to the ball which is the most important thing. I guess maybe a top ten with the guys who lay the hardest wood is what some seem to think is a the top ten Defensive players.

That video is sorry, i've seen better from pop warner sorry but Brent Seals has done nothing and that tape has showed it.

Fred,

I thought this was supposed to be the top 10 D-lineman not top 10 front 7 or 8. Please seperate top 10 d-lineman and top 10 linebackers.

I'm surprised none of you noticed this, but my original top ten only listed EIGHT PLAYERS. I know, I'm an idiot, but I have readjusted the top ten, so enjoy.

You're absolutely right about Goss, I have to rework this to include him, he's obviously on e of the best OLB's in the aera. I was thinking he would play more SS or DB this season to focus on his position in college, but he'll be starting at linebacker for the Huskies, so I'll make an adjustment.

what about goss from South Hills?

You're right about Chad Young, that's what made this list difficult. You can argue he's a top ten guy and would have been my No. 11 if I continued.

+1 on Williams although on the football field I always tend to think of Evan and Tyler as a single entity.

I suspect they think that way about each other as well.

Other than that, good list.

what about Chad Young from glendora? he was Sierra League Defensive MVP. He was also 1st team all sgv

I have one name for you and one name only EVAN WILLIAMS!

Instead of words serving justice in this case, I'll let his play on Friday nights be your judge and jury!

I promise you he will make you remember this post FOREVER.
