Top Ten: The Ohhhh-Line
Man, picking the top ten offensive lineman is a challenge, but I think I'm close, or close enough to put out a talented list. I'm sure there are plenty of deserving big men I've left off, but that's why this forum is here, for you to tell me how I screwed up and who should be on here :)

Above: That big-man protecting QB Joe Carillo is Graham Vickers, who leads our top offensive lineman list.
1. Graham Vickers, Diamond Ranch, 6-2, 270, Sr. - He might be undersized at the next level, but will be a beast his senior season for the panthers. The two-year starting tackle is a returning first teamer and probably the most athletic O-Lineman in the area.
2. Albert Cid, West Covina, 6-2, 287, Sr. - The San Antonio's leagues top returning tackle is back, and has had nothing but rave reviews from combines and coaches, and scouting guru's since.
3. Cody Tescher, Glendora, 6-2, 268, Sr. - One of the best two-way lineman in the area, but he will play a more pivotal role on the offensive end, especially with so many departing first-teamers.
4. Greg Vargas, South Hills, 6-2, 240, Sr. - Will play a pivotal role in Huskies offense. He's got a 3.9 GPA with Ivy League schools drooling all over him.
5. Jake Salter, Damien, 6-1, 260, Sr. - The Sierra League first-team D-Lineman is expected to pick up the offensive slack with Carl Schmitz graduated.
6. Ryan Doll, San Dimas, 6-0, 220, Sr. - The Saints have the best O-Line in the area, beginning with this soon-to-be three year starter who will lead the best rushing team in the valley.
7. Robert Cedeno, South El Monte, 6-0, 226, Sr. - Don't sleep on the Mission Valley League first-team returnee. This kid will be pivotal for quarterback Jose Garay and Co.
8. Ty Olsen, South Hills, 5-11, 230, Sr. - The Huskies' center is a returning second-team all leaguer. Arguably the best returning middle man in the area.
9. Greg Reid, Covina, 6-6, 250, Sr. - Started at right tackle last season and has grown significantly since then. His size will do wonders in the VVL and has been a pleasant surprise at combines.
10. Kyle Salm, San Dimas, 6-5, 250, Sr. - If you think he's a giant, the Saints also have 6-4, 235-pound Garrett Smith to go with Salm and Doll. The more I look, the scarier the Saints appear.

Go Tartans,
Well then it looks like we can at least call it game of the night. If Glendora is anything close to what they were last season West Co will have to be at their best.

dan & don,
the glendora west co game is on saturday the 27th so it should be the lone game of the night
Posted by: go tartans | August 8, 2008 10:37 AM
Dan,
Week 3, (6-26), has some of the best match ups of the pre-season; Damien at Amat, Charter Oak at Rancho Cucamonga, and Chino Hills at Diamond Ranch, although I too will be at C C for the WesCo/Glendora game.
Those looking for fun on the other end of the spectrum always have the Ganesha Giants traveling to LP to play Bassett. One of them will (probably) win.

Go Tartans,
West Co. vs Glendora should be a tough game, don't know who else is playing that night but it
has my vote for game of the week.

So people, this list is an OPINION. So much effort, so much time, so much garbage. When will it end? NEVER because you all get OFF on this stuff. Lost Daddys with Lost Dreams.
Relax.

dub c,
what a great matchup in week 3 between Tescher and Cid when Glendora and West Covina battle it out. that better be game of the week

Hey Fred, how about the list of the top 10 defensive players????
Posted by: football fan | August 5, 2008 10:52 PM
albert cid will beat any linemen in the valley theres no competition out there! lets go bulldogs! south hills dont know wats comin!!

The Saints have a new lineman this year. Don't know his name but he's about 6-2 and 300 lbs. Strong as an ox and pretty quick for a big guy. I think he plays on the D-Line and he can simply push people around. Doll is a really good lineman. He's undersized but runs really well. Smith is the best speed/size combination for any linemen at SD. He's 6-4/6-5 and maybe 240 but he has zero fat on him. He looks really fit in practice. Salm looks super slow and out of shape. I think Baldwin Park will have a much better line then they are being credited. I think they will be SDHSs biggest competition. Should be really fun this year!

Fred,
Love the post. But I have to take exception with Salm at #10... He didn't play a single down last year and following catastrophic knee surgery seems very sketchy during workouts.

Fred...
Great Blog! I agree... I think the Saints will have perhaps their best year in school history. What they do year after next will be more telling then this next year.
Posted by: Saint Fan | August 5, 2008 11:05 AM
Rabe played himself out of his senior year it had nothing to do with the coaches. they were clearly frustrated with his play during the season you could see it on their faces. as for salter my guess is he wont play a lick of offense this year unless some major injuries occur so all you people can stop arguing.
....but imho he is very capable of playing o-line if/when they need him too
Posted by: mikeandmike | August 5, 2008 2:57 AM
San Dimas? Pleeeeeze. Those fat lazy Saint linemen couldn't open a hole in a paper bag. They remind me of that kid Bennett at Amat a few years back. Huge, but no speed, strength or skill. Yet he got a college offer. Go figure. Can't teach size, I guess. He'll never see the field in the Pac-10. If he does, his school is really in deep doo-doo.
Amat fans always whine...WHY?

San Dimas seems to have more than its fare share of tall and big linemen. Is Coach Z from the eastern bloc? Just kidding, but the weekend Wall Street Journal had a great story on sports schools making a comeback in East Germany.
Posted by: New York | August 4, 2008 8:12 PM
Putting a player in the top 5 of the Valley at a position he's never played? What's up with that?
Salter is a solid D-line guy, but he's a bit on the slow side to be an effective o-lineman.
As for the coaching at Damien, I wholeheartedly agree, it is sub-par.
What happened to Raabe last season? He actually got slower and was a non-factor in several games last season. It was tough to watch.
Posted by: checkingin | August 4, 2008 8:47 AM
whitey not sure what was your bloodline point or the other comments your sliding over to make God knows what point but being a 4.0 student makes you a better football player? Point was and is HOW DID HE MAKE TOP TEN before the season even started? After the season he might be but certainly not yet? Or is changing positions that easy?
Try and keep up. Hey and congrats on getting GURU kicked off the blog, CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHERE YOU WILL SPEW YOUR HATE NEXT.
Posted by: Odell | August 4, 2008 12:27 AM
look at what I said, I never commented on Salter being in bozos topten, secondly, this kid is smart and if you know anything about football, OL especially you gotta be intelligent, coachable to succeed, will he be a D!, don't know, is the coaching at Damien goo, doesn't matter that much to me, I know for a fact , he will be good! oh lest we forget, players, who can play(Salter) can and will adapt to new positions, you see it, in every step up the ladder, HS to college, college to the NFL......you're the man Jake!.
Posted by: whitey | August 4, 2008 12:01 AM
whitey acn you read or do you just like starting things between people wh misinformation.
Salter is a great individual, a decent NG, a poorly coached footbal player. He will give his all but the point being made was how can he be top 5 at a position he never played in a hiigh school game? Now is he top 5 DL? Better than Rabe? Better than Rodriguez? Better than Austin...all Div 1 signees last year so once again that remains to be seen. Hope he gets CIF honors and gets a Div1 ride but that wasn't the point was it? What does the bloodline have to do with anything?
Posted by: Odell | August 3, 2008 11:45 PM
what happened to the guru post? whats the reason it was pulled?
Posted by: why was it pulled? | August 3, 2008 11:37 PM
2 things, first off check out Salters blood lines, Dad was a D1 OL at Washington St in the mid 70's , older brother played C(bb) at Stanford, this kid is a 4.0 and will play his ass off, second thing, what happened to tattoo(guru) , where is his article, it disappeared, just like he should do!

Amat Parent,
You play yourself into the hands of these idiots who have nothing intelligent to say. The idiot below me for example who wouldn't know class if it hit him with a truck. (gotta be succksss/donkey boy)
Your job is to defend the school against trash like this and let the boys do the talking on the field. Besides it's not what recognition you get before the season that counts, it's what you get at the end of it that matters.
Posted by: Bleeds Blue and Gold | August 2, 2008 9:19 PM
hey old time. the old time amat parents show no class either. You give a good example at the end of your post by slamming that blogger. also go back and look at some of the posts from the old farts from amat on different topics. no class all the way around at that school
Posted by: no class all around at amat | August 2, 2008 7:01 PM
Won't this be Salter's FIRST year playing O LIne EVER? Based off of what film did ANYONE put him on that list. YUP HE'S STRONG BUT..... that's a joke. Good solid NG and NOTHING else. Too slow, too unskilled and too unproven. Next thing we'll see is Serafinko on the list of best TOP TEN LINEBACKERS.
Fred I know times are tough and you try to spread the wealth and give the "other" Catholic school a bone but Salter as a TOP TEN Olinemen when he's NEVER played the position???
Last time I checked PASSING LEAGUE games aren't in pads or WITH LINEMEN?
Tough one to figure out.
Posted by: TOP TEN???? | August 2, 2008 6:06 PM
Everyone needs to relax on Robledo and Ramirez. Didn't you hear him say you need to tell him were he made a mistake, show some class and represent your school. I think both Tyler Perri and Evan Williams should be on this list but who cares their Ability on the field will take care of all that

duarte oline
all the way.....

Amat Parent,
You are what we old timers call "the new breed" of Amat parents. You show absolutely no class with your verbal barrage at Fred and you seem to be overly concerned with getting individual recognition, hence, your son, instead of teaching more important lessons of life....patience is a virtue and more importantly, silence is golden.
Football is a team effort, let the results on the field speak for itself. No one really cares if your son made Fred's list or not.
Posted by: Old timer Amat Parent | August 2, 2008 1:01 PM
Fred, What a nice acknowledgment for Graham. This should be a good year for DRanch. I look at these blogs every so often and it seems that we tend to get more negative attention. Roddy has done a great job with his team and goes over and above what probably most highschool coaches do. His players and parents have much respect for him. It will be a tough pre-season for us and hopefully the boys will all stay healthy. With college offers coming in for many of our boys we look forward to watching many years of college football. We Are DR!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: dranchparent | August 2, 2008 11:45 AM
This is why this blog has no credibility. Ramirez and Robledo, sorry, you guys don't know much.
How can there not be a Charter Oak Kid in the top ten? Where have you guys been. Also, the Duarte kid is good. Stop wasting space with San Dimas. They were soft, are soft, and will always be soft.
P.S. You could probably add another D-Ranch kid to the mix.
Posted by: insider | August 2, 2008 10:51 AM
top d line men?? or front 7??
Posted by: beep | August 2, 2008 10:44 AM
Amat Parent,
You are acting like someone who has no idea what Bishop Amat Football is all about. The players should be the least concern if they make an individual preseason list or be recognized by the self-proclaimed guru. That's what is wrong with high school football these days.
They need to be concerned about what is important for their team and what there role is to achieve team goals. We have seen what individual play does for us at Amat. Kids more concerned with getting a collge scholarship and what they project at the next level.
Regain your focus parent because you do not want your son to hear anything at the dinner table that is contradicting what the coaching staff is trying to teach him.

Fred, will you be fillingin for the "guru" on the SH sidelines this year?
Posted by: JFR | August 2, 2008 8:18 AM
Fred
I have Watched Graham Vickers for a couple of years and is a very deserving choice for the top lineman .I beleive that he's been offered three D-1 offers and I'm sure more to come. Good choice Fred

First of all, nobody is sticking there chest out. What a dumb comment.
Secondly, if you really knew anything that has been going on for the last five years, Coach Z has done great things with this program. This may just be the year of the Saints..
We're in the position to do good things this year and we'll take that positive approach in this season.
If you don't like talking about our Saints, just stay off the blog. The kids are working hard and everyone involved with the program is doing their best!
GO SD SAINTS

This is Fred's list, too bad you didnt make it..
Posted by: Poor Amat | August 1, 2008 10:32 PM
Your absolutely pathetic and obviously there has not been any real assessment or evaluation because without one Bishop Amat or Charter Oak offensive lineman that means your either really ignorant or just simply stupid. Both schools have a tradition of running the football and having an exceptional featured running back and this year will once again have two of the top players in the Valley at that position but of course they obviously earn their yards by themselves and that would never having anything to do with their offensive linemen. Your right I am a parent of an offensive lineman for Bishop Amat and have a friend that has a son that plays for Charter Oak and we both agree your dumb and an idiot. Nevermind mentioning them we will instead turn a negative into a positive and use your stupidity as motivation. Let's just wait and see what you have to say at the end of the football season.

Keep The Faith,
Long road back from where? The Saint's historically (30 years)have never been this good. The School has a history of 2 league championships before last year. We (San Dimas people) should act like humbly and stop posting on this blog because we have not done anything to puff out our chests yet!
GO Saints!

To go along with the OLine are their coaches. West Covina and San Dimas have the best. Magorie and Holman are great. Both played in college at a high level and know the details of the position.

It's been a long road back for Saints Football Program.
These kids have worked their butts off and the Senior class and underclassmen are posed to do some damage, if they play to their full potential.
Coach Z and the entire staff has done an outstanding job bringing these kids together over the past four years...
Good luck boys, it going to be exciting!
